Firewire stopped working on iMac G5

I have 2 firewire external drives on my iMac G5. Today, after a reboot, they stopped showing up. I moved them over to another mac and both came up just fine, so I'm sure the drives and external cases are good. I then connected one using USB (the other one doesn't have USB). It's working ok with USB. The problem is I need Firewire for other stuff (video camera and other camera hook up), plus I prefer to use firewire for the external drives.
When I go to System Profiler and click on Firewire, it shows "Firewire bus:" and that is it. Any ideas? This it a bad logic board? Is it possible that the firewire circutry got disabled? Can I fix it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Try one of these:
Zapp the P-RAM:
After the startup tone, hold down <commandd><option><p><r> until 3 additional startup tones are heard, then release the 4 keys.
Open Firmware reset:
After the startup tone, hold down <command><option><o><f> until the text screen is visible. When text can be entered, type the following commands, followed by the <return> key (there are no space characters in each command):
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all (the Mac will boot up after this command is entered)

  • IP over Firewire stopped working

with the 10.5.2 update IP over Firewire stopped working. I tried this with 3 machines on my G4 server (still running Tiger) and 2 different Firewire cables. target disk mode still works, so it can't be the cable. I'd appreciate any input & ideas.

I figured this out. Shut down for 20 minutes or so. Turned the Macbook on and firewire IP workd.

  • Firewire stops working

I have updated 3 - G4 733mhz , 1 Mac Mini and 1 17" flat panel Imac with the newest 10.4.8 and security updates. The Firewire has stopped working in all of the above. Any help or suggestions?
(Yes, I've wiped and did a clean install and zapped the PRAM on the 733 and the 17" Imac)

    How do you know?
What I mean is, you say "the Firewire has stopped working", but you don't say how you came to that conclusion. Have you tried a variety of devices which are known to work on other machines?
If you have just one Firewire device, that device may have failed (coincidentally). If it is something other than a DV camera or a hard disk, it may require an updated driver for use with 10.4.8.
With your firewire device(s) connected, can you see them in System Profiler? If they show up there, but not in the application, you don't necessarily have a Firewire problem.
Sometimes, Firewire ports apparently "die". Try turning off the machine, unplugging EVERYTHING from it, waiting 10 minutes, then plugging in everything again. This is unlikely to help you if your problem is apparent on 3 machines.

    Messages stopped working on iMac

No luck with these troubleshooting tips either... I don't have a lot of time to dig in, but I did capture some console logs during an auth event this morning to see if it would show anything useful.
Console logs during authentication - 10:30am EST, 13 Jan 2014
13/01/14 10:30:35.120 AM imagent[7679]: [Warning] Empty account query with service: iMessage

13/01/14 10:30:49.646 AM imagent[7679]: [Warning] *** Listener ID: com.apple.CalendarAgent  does not have capability: (Status), not allowing request
It looks like there could be a certificate issue but I'm seeing a current valid cert for com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.xxx so I'm not sure which cert this could be referring to.  There's no indication in the console message and there is no useful information in the error message from the app.
I can log in to Messages on my iMac so I think it's a local issue only.

  • Yahoo mail stopped working on imac when i changed passord with Yahoo

This may or may not be a coincedence but it seems about the same time.  Ever since I changed my password for my yahoo account, I've had problems with getting yahoo mail to send or receive from mac mail.  I simply changed my passsword on both my iphone and ipad and they've worked seamlessly, however with my imac no such luck.  I've searched high and low on forums, tried changing the settings and ports.  Deleted ALL yahoo related items within keychain, nothing seems to work.  A couple of times I deleted the yahoo account, reinstalled and it brought in thousands of messages, but then 5 minutes later would stop working again.  Now it continually gives me the message that my password is being rejected.  If I go to yahoo the password works fine.
I've spent hours trying to resolve this, if anyone has any suggestions, please help me!!

This worked for me. If you have an email that will not load in your yahoo from your PC, it is probably the culprit. Delete that mail or mails and your iphone will load all of your missing emails.

  • Firewire stopped working

My Firewire external hard drive and DVD burner have recently stopped working. Actually, I'm sure they work fine, but I can't connect them to my computer. I recently moved, and before the move everything was working fine, and after the move my computer wouldn't recognize anything I connected to it via Firewire cable. The external drive is 150GB from Acomdata, which I've had for roughly a year; and the DVD burner is from LaCie, which I've had for two weeks.
The external drive has a USB port in addition to a Firewire one, and it works if I connect it with a USB cable. But the DVD burner only has Firewire ports on it. I know the burner isn't broken, because a light comes on when the power source is plugged in.

One thing to try is to turn off the iBook and remove the power adaptor and the battery and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. Sometimes the ports "reset" if you do this.
    Good luck!

Well you still have not stated what you did.
I would recommend re-inputting all of your account preferences as I advised in your other post in this thread:

  • IMessage and FaceTime stops working in iMac after carrier change

    Hi all,
I have done a fair bit of googling and had a look at the discussion history here but couldn't find a solution to my problem. Apology if it has been raised and discussed before and I woud appreciate being re-directed to the thread.
I have got iMessage and Face Time running smoothly on my iPad 2 wi-fi, iphone 4S and iMac OX 10.8.4. However, on the day of my changing carrier (17/09/2013), iMessage and FaceTime stopped working on my iMac as well as iPad 2. It can longer recieve or send messages or receive or make Face Time calls. All the settings looked the same - tick mark next to both my Apple ID email and mobile number, and conversation has always been set to start from mobile number on all devices. iMessage and FaceTime continue to work on iphone 4S without any issues. New sim card but same mobile number. I don't worry too much about the iPad. I just want to make it work again on my iMac and appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Steps I have attempted to make iMessage work again (I left Face Time turned off on iphone and iMac during this time)
    0) I disabled/removed Bonjour (GTalk) in iMessage setting in iMac
    1) I have turned off iMessage and FaceTime on all devices and swtiched iMessage only back on in iphone 4S first and then iMac. I got the message on my iphone that the iMac will start using the mobile number and Apple ID to send iMessages. However, iMac still fails to send or receive messages.
    2) I have updated Apple ID on the web (removed the phone number, saved, and then re-entered phone number assoicated with Apple ID). Then repeat #1
    3) I have tried changing "start new conversation from Apple ID email" across all devices - did not resolve anything
    4) I have added a friend's Apple ID in iMessage on my iMac -mobile number automatically appeared and tick marks for both her mobile and Apple ID email but unable to send or recieve messages still while it continues to work from her iphone
    5) I have also done a PRAM reset - I got the 2 chimes - did not resolve the issue
There's a clear trigger for this problem - change of carrier but I don't understand why it is affecting the iMac (and ipad) but not the iphone itself. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do about it?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Hi,
At the OS X 10.8.2 update things regarding the iMessages Account's login were changed.
It now requires that the Mac's Serial Number is held in the Memory for it on the Logic Board.
It can get missed in Refurbishments and Repairs.
This is used to generate the Auth-Token for your Apple ID in the Keychain.
Go to Application/Utilities and open Keychain Access.
In the Login Keychain look for "IDS: (Your Apple ID)-AuthToken"
Double clicking this will open the Info Panel.
Check the Access tab and make sure it is either allowing Any App or lists Messages, IMCore and those in this pic.
Although it is know that the Mac has to list the Serial Number it is not clear if other info is needed.
It is possible that it also refers to your Public IP address in some way, this would seem unlikely as most people's ISP issued IP address is from a DHCP server - you basically keep the same IP as you are "Always On" between the router and the ISP but it can change.
If it is not allowing access then change the settings.
There are also two .plists that contain the word imessages
One of these refers to the server you connect to.
com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist contains the Info you have in the Preferences of Messages (Apple ID, Linked iPhone Numbers and any additional emails)
com.apple.imessage.bag.plist contains which server at iMessages you connect to.
I would try deleting (drag to Trash) the second of these and then restarting Messages.
If that does not work Quit Messages and delete the AuthToken for your Apple ID (if the AuthToken appeared to be allowing access above.)
    Restart Messages.

  • NJ3 - Firewire stopped work

    Hi,
the firewire port of my trusted Jukebox suddenly stopped working. I was in the middle of uploading some files when suddenly the player froze. Since then I have not been able to transfer any songs via firewire to the player - neither by using the Notmad Explorer nor by using Media Source. The tranfer starts but suddenly stops or the player freezes and there is nothing transfered to the player.
Resetting, rebooting, cleaning up, reinstalling the latest firmware all have not helped.
USB still works (but of course very slowly).
Has anyone have had any similiar problems?

Only those with faulty firewire ports I would think. If you want to get it repaired you'll have to contact support. I assume you've checked with another cable?

  • Firewire stops working suddenly

I'm using an iPod Photo, most recent versions of iTunes and iPod software. Took the iPod on a plane to Canada. When I arrived, the library was gone. It still showed that there was 20 gigs on the iPod, but it was as if factory default settings had taken over. Have since restored ipod, recopied library. problem is: now iPod will charge by firewire (plug icon appears), but iPod will not sync via firewire. It acts normally using the usb cable, but as I don't have usb 2.0, it is really slow and annoying and I want to go back to firewire. What is happening? Any ideas?

    How do you know?

  • Wireless stopped working for iMac only, any suggestions?

    Hi Folks,
I have 10.4.11 installed on my daughter's iMac, and it had been running wirelessly over WPA Personal to a Buffalo router for three months or so. Yesterday it just stopped working. I can connect to other unsecured networks in the area (albeit slowly), and if i pick other secured networks in the area, it prompts me for a password for them.
My home network acts funny though. No matter what i select for the security of the network (WPA, WPA2, etc) it never indicates that i'm using the wrong protocol or have a bad password. For the other secured networks, if i punch in the wrong password, it pops up a dialog saying couldn't join. This one, no such luck..it shows full strength signal, gives an 'autoassigned' DHCP address and sits in isolation on it's own idea of a network.
If it wasn't for the fact that i can get onto other public networks, i would say it's bad hardware...but that works. I will probably try changing my SSID later this evening (kind of a pain b/c of other computers on the network) to see if there is something 'broken' about this SSID in it's configuration.
I've tried the dollar sign thing before the password. I've tried creating new "Locations", no joy. I've tried deleting this network from the 'preferred networks' list, editing it, creating new ones, etc...no joy.
    Any suggesions?

  • External Speakers stopped working on Imac

External speakers stopped working.   Verified speakers operating with Iphone.   Checked that speakers plugged in correctly.   Tried usual power cycling step.   External speakers do not show up in sound preferences.    Anyone with any advice?
    Thanks,

If you unplug the speakers to the internal speakers work OK? If not try  resetting the system PRAM see Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If they still don't work or if the internal works OK then look into the speaker plug. Do you see a red light? There is a switch inside the plug that detects the presents of a  jack and sometimes it gets stuck or breaks entirely.
You could try gently using a non-conductive device (a toothpick is good) probing inside the plug to see if you can free the switch. Of course this could be harmful if done incorrectly. If the system is still under warranty you might want to take it to have it looked at.

  • Built-in iSight stops working on iMac--try re-setting SMU

I spent about two hours trying to figure out why my built-in iSight stopped working--all of a sudden it would show only a green screen in Photo Booth, black in iChat and not at all in iVideoHD, and not really register as available. It did show up in the Apple profiler of USB devices, and also, it would work in a non-apple program, iVisit. I did not install an HP printer, as another thread user commented on. I read about resetting the SMU in an Apple discussion and also in this forum, so I shut down the computer, pulled the power and everything else plugged into the computer and waited a minute, then plugged the computer back in and turned it on, then finally plugged back in my devices including keyboard and mouse (that was Apple's instructions). Vioala! iSight works again.

    Hi,
    For Others
As a Note on this some G5s are prone to not having the System Preferences > Displays set to Millions.
There is no direct evidence that it effects other computers but do check if your is still set to Millions and is not being commanded by a games app or something else to display less Colours.

  • IMessage stopped working on iMac

i message stopped working on imac

Oh I think I follow now.  So the problem you are having is on the phone.  iMessages will switch to text messages if there is not a data service avialablle, or the reciever is not currently on the network to receive them.  So you might be in a bad coverage area, or the people you are sending them may not have service or have their phones off.  Either way this is not a Mac question and should not be in this fourm.
