Firewire - Thunderbolt - EDIROL FA101 issue

I just received my brand new custom ordered iMac, but it has only thunderbolt ports. My whole home studio system is based on my EDIROL FA101 Firewire audio interface that worked like a charm through the Firewire port on the older iMac. Now I had to buy an apple made Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter to conncet the EDIROL.
Now its bad... Everything is the same setup, as I use it for years, and it has nothing to do with drivers or Mavericks since the old computer I used until last week had Mavericks too. Now the music stops for seconds frequently in every player, iTunes, VLC, Youtube even Logic pro. Just stops for a sec, than continues and stops again and keeps doing this. (Just to make sure, I returned the Firewire - Thunderbolt adapter to the apple store and they gave me an other one, just to make sure that is not a corrupt adapter)
I have tried everything. First I have switched to BUS mod on the back of the EDIROL menas getting the power from the computer, cause I thought the power coming from the EDIROLs AC adapter and the Thunderbolt adapter is having some conflict but nothing changed, or I've got even more stops and some noise too. Than I pluged AC back on the EDIROL, so thunderbolt is getting it's power from the iMac, EDIROL from the wall, but I still have the issue. Stops, often, than not often. Sometimes I have 10 stops within a minute bot sometimes plays the song correctly... I need some help or advice.
Thank you guys!

We would have no idea, my suggestion is to contact the developers of the PreSonus StudioLive and see if they support the device in
OS X Mavericks
via FW to Thunderbolt cable.
Good luck.

  • Firewire thunderbolt adaptor does not recognize my time machine external hard drive

Hi everybody. I have a retina MacBook Pro, and wanted to connect my time machine external HD to the mac using a firewire-thunderbolt adaptor.
I did so, but the HD does not show up in the devices menu. Any suggestion?
    thank you for your help

Have you tried rebooting? If you share what type drive you have, perhaps others will share their experiences. Is your drive bus powered? I haven't had any trouble so far connecting through a TB-FW adapter to my external hard drive (Hitachi drive in an OWC case, bus powered).

  • Firewire / Thunderbolt cable (not adaptor!)

Does anyone know if there is a Firewire / Thunderbolt cable, i.e. plug to plug, not plug to socket? Seems ridiculous to have to buy an adpator and a Firewire cable to connect my audio interface...

Conversion requires circuitry, so a simple cable won't work. While it's not impossible someone would build a converter into a cable, I wouldn't think it likely that anyone would do so. So I think you'll need to buy the adapter and the appropriate cable.
    Regards.

  • Firewire- Thunderbolt adapter?

Is there a Firewire->Thunderbolt adapter available for the MacBook Pro 17"?
Is there a Firewire->Thunderbolt adapter available for the MacBook Pro 17" or do I have to buy one of those ungainly box things?

The first post says he has a MacBook Pro, and mentioned iMac later, but both do, and you're still right.

  • Using the Edirol FA101

Hi all -- hope someone can shed some light on this problem. I'm running FCP 5.1.1 on my G4 1.5Ghz 17in PB with great success. The other day I hooked up my Edirol FA101 and changed my sequence and AV settings to reflect the new audio interface. At first I thought the audio output was spot on, but on closer examination of the soundtrack through headphones plugged into the Edirol, I've discovered that there's a slight crackling present. No matter what I do I can't make it go away. It's hardly noticable, but I notice it and it's bugging me! I've played out the raw footage through the Edirol in QT and there's no problem. Neither is the crackling present when I export the audio to Soundtrack Pro and play that through the Edirol. Does anyone have a clue about what's causing this??
I've also used the Edirol with Garageband and Logic Express with no problems too. Only FCP seems to be causing problems.

  • Firewire thunderbolt issues

So I'm trying to connect a PreSonus StudioLive AI to a 27 inch late 2013 iMac running 10.9.5.  There have been people on the forums at PreSonus that say it that there is an issue with Mavericks.  I've also seen a press release from PreSonus saying that they worked with the Firewire to Thunderbolt converters.  The problem is that the system sees the converter but does not see the board.  I have installed the recommended drivers and such.
The weird part is that it actually connects for a moment and I can use the software, but in less than 5 minutes, it will freeze and crash.
I can upload the saved system profile if necessary (just couldn't find an upload link/button).
Thanks for any and all assistance, this is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

  • External drive not connecting via firewire thunderbolt

I have a iMac at home and at work. This external drive connected via a thunderbolt/firewire adapter yesterday on my work iMac. When I try to connect on my home iMac it does not work. This drive is powered by the cable and I read that that is a problem but my trouble is that it did work on my work iMac yesterday but will not work on my home iMac today. I am using different adapters, is that the trouble? These macs are the same machine, one has more storage but otherwise the same.

I was thinking it might be an issue with the drive needing too much bus power. On the newer iMacs, USB provides higher bus power than FireWire. That might still be the issue, even if the drives supply their own power.
Just one Firewire port on my iMac.
I think it has two, but one is FireWire 400 and one is FireWire 800. So you only have one device plugged into those two ports?

  • New iMovie '08 problems -- FireWire or new device issues?

Not sure if this is an iMovie '08 problem or an OS X problem. Here's the story --
Prior camcorder was a Panasonic, MiniDV format. Hooks up nicely with iMovie, via FireWire (400). I also have a WD My Book (500 GB) device to store the raw data (Event Library), which connects via FireWire (800). In the past, all three devices (Panasonic, My Book and MacBook Pro) all played nicely together.
Fast forward to now. Bought a new camcorder (problems with the Panasonic). It's a Canon ZR950 (MiniDV). With iMovie running, I first connect the WD device which is successfully mounted. I then hookup the new Canon and within a few seconds I get an error about a "device not cleanly shut down" (or words to that effect). Odd .... and when I try to connect to my new camcorder, I get a "no camera connected" error.
Rebooted, retried .... same issues. Another time I first connected the Canon and this time, iMovie successfully sees it. I go to connect the My Book and then the camcorder drops out.
So, it seems I can have only one FireWire device connected at a time, which is odd since I didn't have this issue with the old Panasonic.
    Help!

Interesting that you based your purchase on CR magazine because I too use it like a bible. However, when it comes to video cameras, I think they are way off base when not considering the editing side of video making that goes along with any camcorder. Who shoots video simply to plug it into a TV for playback?? If they were doing responsible reporting on this particular subject, they would also include computer capture and editing details in the reviews. Lots of the new format cams don't even work with Macs and the ones that do generally give lesser quality after conversion than what you can still get with tape. At least you made the right decision there!

  • Thunderbolt Display has issue with weird washed-out colors after waking from sleep (after upgrade to Mavericks)

I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.
I made a video demonstrating the issue here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19179-MVpWA&feature=youtu.be
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Same thing for me too.  Late 2012 13" MBP Retina.  I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days.  The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update:  I just got back from a trip.  I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display.  I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor.  I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep.  After resuming from sleep, the display is ok.  Maybe try rebooting?  I'll update if it continues.

  • Digital distortion on external firewire audio Edirol FA-101 and 10.4.11

    Hi
Not sure if this is the right forum but I have an Edirol FA-101 external firewire audio unit and it seems like prior to installing 10.4.11 update for Tiger the audio was perfect. Now however I get a constant level of what sounds like digital distortion even without any audio sources playing out of my FA-101.. I saw the forum/support notes regarding audio problem with 10.4.10.. just wondered if anyone has similar experiences..the audio device does not have it's own drivers but uses the mac built in firewire audio support.
    Thanks

that's what outputs 3 and 4 are there for. You can't control one stereo output to do two different things at the same time... it says in the edirol manual that the headphone jack outputs the same as output 1 and 2 from the back.
Therefore if you want a separate stereo output pair to connect your speakers to, you must use outputs 3 and 4.
Edirol didn't make the unit for the pc - actually the hardware was designed for the mac (hence it's core audio compatibility out of the box).
Edirol's fa-101 and fa-66 (which I own) are mac product which just happen to work on the pc thanks to the driver they had to write after the fact to support windows xp. Plug the unit into a pc without the driver and nothing happens. plug it into a mac running osx and it's automagically configured for low latency, highest performance, midi and audio in and out.
Have fun owning the best interface you can get for the mac for the money!

  • Thunderbolt HDMI HDTV issues

Ok, so I have the latest model 13" macbook air with Lion, and when I connect it to my 720p hd tv to watch movies, the display/sound fades in and out. i.e. it works notmally for 10-30 seconds, then blacks out/mutes the audio (coming through HDMI).  I am using the griffin adapter.  Same issue occurs at different resolutions.
The same adapter/computer works fine on my 720p projector (no flickering).
The same adapter/ HDMI cable(tried 2)/TV works fine with my pre-thunderbolt mac book pro.
Same issue with or without audio running through HDMI.
    HELP!!!!

When I run my macbook air, via a different thunderbolt to DVI adapter, it works find (but no audio).

  • Thunderbolt to TV issues

I have a macbook pro mid 2011 and Im having trouble with the thunderbolt to hdmi connection. I have a Lg tv and when connecting the hdmi the tv screen flickers and I lose audio for about 3 seconds. This happens about every 10 seconds. I assumed it was a refresh rate problem but i've tried different resolutions ( even the hd ones) to no avail as the signal seems to still cut out every 10 sec.
The problem doesn't happen when I run windows 7 through bootcamp making me think there is something wrong with lion. I'm running all the latetest updates for the thunderbolt port and i even have tried resetting my Pram and NVram with no result
Any help is greatly apreciated as I have been searching for a solution for a few days with no success

Thunderbolt/HDMI Connection Issue Solved for Me
I have a MacAir, Sept 2011 edition, Part # MC 969LL/A,  running on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. On the Mac's partitioned hard drive I use Parallels version 6.0 to run:
    a. Windows XP, service pack 3;
    b. Windows Media Player, version 11; and
    c. Microsoft's Silverlight, Version 5.1.20913.0.
I recently bought a Kanex 10' Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable which I connected to my older  Insignia TV, model E228CZNKW1BYNN.
I connected this cable to my Mac's Thunderbolt outport into the TV's HDMI, opened my Firefox browser, version 24, on the Apple side of my MAC & tried to watch a streaming CBS show of last week's NCIS through the WiFi signal of my home router. My TV screen flashed "Video 5" & turned a medium blue color at the same time that my MAC monitor lost its signal & turned the same color. Nothing happened on either screen , & like others on this forum, I never got the TV nor my Mac screen to display any video or audio.
We quit trying to work the Mac Apple & connected the same cable to my wife's new Acer Aspire V5 operating Windows 8, Windows Media Player,  & using Google Chrome's browser. We then seamlessly watched our router's WiFi streaming NCIS show directly on the Insignia monitor without any setup or connectivity issues about video or audio -- while controlling the TV with its remote.
Later I re-connected this cable to my Mac's Thunderbolt outport into the TV's HDMI, opened Parallels, Windowx XP, & took its Firefox browser to the CBS website to watch another NCIS episode. Like on my wife's Acer, we then seamlessly watched the streaming NCIS show directly on the Insignia monitor without any setup or connectivity issues about video or audio -- while controlling the TV with its remote. I then checked my MacBookAir System Preferences & noted:
The "Display" tab was defaulted to resolutions @ 720p with no "underscan".
The"Arrangement" tab was defaulted to "mirror display", and
The "Color" "Display Profiler" was defaulted to "HD 709-A".
My comparative, non-geek, conclusion of the above opeerations:
    a. My Kanex cable works very well -- and is not the problem.
    b. The Acer (with its AMD Quad Core processor) & Windows 8 and a Chrome browser connected directly & seamlessly to a streaming WiFi signal with no adjustments or tweekings.
    c. The MACBOOKAIR Parallels 6 operating "OLD" Windows XP (SP3) with a Firefox browser also connected directly & seamlessly with no adjustments or tweekings. [The defaulted color brightness, balance, & contrast were all better on the TV through my Mac than though my wife's Acer.] and
    d. The MacBookAir OS X Lion 10.7.5 must be the source of these connectivity problems -- and APPLE fix these problems -- whatever they are!!
Given my 3 year teck support contract, I'll be calling APPLE soon to discuss the above. If they provide me an APPLE solution, I'll try to post it here later.
    Hopes the above info helps!

  • Thunderbolt ICS Update Issues

Me, my wife and every other Thunderbolt user  I know (people from AZ to NY) through Verizon are having serious issues with this update. I have been through tier 2 Verizon support and multiple hard resets through the Verizon store with the final verdict from Verizon "The hardware on your phone cannot handle the update. You will need to upgrade your phone." NO! Verizon should not put an update out for a phone they sell that cannot handle the update. To me and many others this is just a way to force you to upgrade a phone that was working flawlessly. Up until now I have been very happy with Verizon but finding out that I cannot revert to the old operating system that worked perfectly we are done with Verizon. Keep in mind this is not an HTC problem. The Thunderbolt is an awesome phone. So today we are going to upgrade. Not with Verizon but with ATT to change carriers and see how they do. We have already found that the monthly service will be a bit less through ATT for the same service. I would not be surprised that there will be a class action law suit against Verizon over this if there is not already one. If I do find one I will be joining them.

"We have already found that the monthly service will be a bit less through ATT for the same service."
I have a natural resistance to shopping cell phone plans but VW's ever increasing cost for decreasing service got me over my potential energy barrier.  Like giles16 I found that I can actually get better features from that same provider and for $10/month less.   Verizon Wireless wants to knock me down from Unlimited to 2GB .  I know, I rarely use more than 1.5GB in a month so they tell me I should not care. But I do care!  Turn about is fair play Verizon.  Since I rarely use more than 1.5GB per month you should have no problem keeping me on my current plan instead of ticking me off.  I'm not going to be a sheep and just take what you offer.  I'll just have to vote with my feet and leave.
For $10/month less I'll get 5GB on my phone, and tethering included, and hotspot included and I'll get 3GB eachof my other two smartphones and I'll get more talk minutes than I ever use for my other two feature phones, and unlimited text too.
So less $, more data.  Oh yeah!  No $30 upgrade fee.  And the new phone I want is $100 less there than from VW.
Counting the days until all my phones are out of contract.  Then I'll be again.

  • Thunderbolt SIM card issues??

I was having internet connection issues with my thunderbolt and they sent me out another SIM card and did a master reset. I put the SIM card in restarted it and I turned it back on and it has a pickture of a SIM card with an explanation mark and it wont activate. Whats the problem and how can it be fixed??

Hello ladygaga1! Welcome to the community!
Since it has been several days, I am hoping your issue has been resolved by now. It sounds like your SIM card has not been activated at this time. If you are still having issues, you can activate by going to your My Verizon account, choose Activate or Switch Device under "I Want to..." You will need the IMEI from the device first, and then the SIM card number (both can be found in Settings>About phone>Phone identity) to activate.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

  • Cheap Firewire / Thunderbolt audio interface

    Hello Mac people,
I have a 13" MacBook Pro, and the Music department need it to be able to have a way to input music while listing to headphones at the same time. I am aware that there is a input/output jack available, but from my understandings it isn't possible to use it as both at the same time (using a splitter cable). I need a cheap 'no latency' solution (preferably not USB) to this.
The input devices would be mostly Keyboards.
    Thanks,
    Adam

Almost all midi keyboards are USB, and there's no problem with latency since midi signals are very low bandwidth. Plus you don't have a problem with Apple's current transition from Firewire to Thunderbolt.
