Firewire to firewire on working macs ?

Hi to all,
what can possibly happen if i connect 2 macs trough fire wire while they are both operatig ?
nothing ?
see each other ?
blow up for good ?
make coffe ?
Thanks
Paolo

HI mate,
will try and keep it as layman as possible, not sure of your mac expertise level.
whilst our fellow mac peeps are correct on the target mode scenario, you CAN also link both machines whilst they are BOTH on, by enabling firewire in your network preferences on both computers and then creating a user account to log on to, on each machine, then use the connect to server method to log into the other computer.
You will need to make note of the IP addy, USERNAME for the newly created account on each computer ( this will be the name of the other computer and vice versa) and PASSWORD ( this will be the password you want for the the other computer and vice versa).
When you are armed with all those bits of info, you can the connect to server method as your "target" so to speak...
whilst you will be able to move files about just like an ethernet or wireless connection, the speeds are not proper Firewire boosted.
Sorry I am in a rush to go out, but I hope that helps you out.

  • Firewire port not working Mac Mini (G4 1.25ghz)

    Hi,
The firewire port isn't working on my mac mini, I've tried several devices, but none are connecting. I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue and possibly a solution. The only software installed on the computer since the firewire worked last was Apple updates, so maybe other mini's lost firewire somewhere along the way.
    Thanks, and Thanks
    W

This worked from Smokerz in the Power Mac G4 forum:
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
    Works fine now thanks Smokerz!!!!!
also repaired permission and reset PRAM, nothing worked until I did this.

  • I need to connect my old Mac book pro to the new one to transfer files.  The old one doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Will the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter or Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work?

I want to transfer data from my old Mac book pro to my new one using migrate.  The old computer doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Does the Thunderbolt to Firewire or the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work to connect them and transfer data?
    Thank you!

Yes, use a Firewire cable and the FW to Tbolt adaptor.

  • Iomega eGo 2TB USB/Firewire 800 drive not working with Time Machine.

The drive I had for Time Machine died and I replaced it with an iomega eGo 2 TB USB/Firewire 800 drive. Time Machine finds it and backs up the disk when I first boot up but then it seems like the drive goes off line. At that point, when Time Machine tires to back up it can't get the drive to respond and my system hangs. To fix that, I turn off the iomega that fixes the hang up and I get the disconnect without ejecting warning.
I ran disk utility and disk warrior. Both apps reported the disk is fine.
Can any tell me what's up? I'm running OS X 10.7.2
    Thanks.

I am having this exact same error with my new iMac 21.5" connected to a brand new Iomega eGo 2 TB Desktop Firewire 800 External Hard Drive (Mac Edition - 34796).
The TimeMachine backup works fine, but as soon as the iMac goes to sleep and wakes back up, TimeMachine doesn't respond well to any commands and all sorts of errors appear on the screen.
I will try the tip here from Kappy and report back later if this works for me.
Kappy, one thing to note is that I'm using the Firewire connection from the iMac to the eGo and experiencing this problem.  The eGo has its own power supply too.

  • IMac firewire port is not working

iMac firewire port is not working
    Hi everybody, Happy New Year.
I am a 72 years old semi-newbie in video editing, because Iedit only 1 or may be 2 movies a year since 2007 and I have only very little computer knowledge.
I received a new 27” iMac as a birthday gift 14 months ago.  About 10 months ago, with help, I successfully use the Migration Assistant to transfer some datas from my old power G4 to the iMac including two Final Cut Express projects.  I had one project successfully done; burned to DVD and I save it with Print To Video. Last week, I have my second project done, I burned the sequences into DVD but unable to do a Print To Videodue to the iMac is not communicating with my Sony camcorders DCR VX1000, this is the same camcorder I used on the last job which was working a couple of months ago.As a result, I try to switch the Easy Setup with different Format and different Use; I refresh the Canvas window; I did a Mix down; move the Screen Saver to NEVER as well as the Energy Saver set to NEVER SLEEP.  I also trashed the preferences (plist) folders; run the Utility repair, I replaced the firewire cable (4 pines – 9 pines 800), but nothing work.  Up to this point, I think that there is no signal from the firewire port to the camcorder because I understand when the sequences is ready, the firewire is connected between the computer and the recording camcorder, the Print to Video is activated, then the word DV- IN should be seen on the recording deck screen. This time, I don’tread such words on the recording screen. Therefore, I think there’s no out going signal from the iMac to the recording camcorder and the iMac is not receiving signal from the recording camcorder. At this point, I try to connect my iMac to the power G4 to see if I can do some data transfer. Follow the procedures, I hook up the data transfer cable between the G4 and the iMac, I can the fireswire icon moving on the G4 screen but no indication on the iMac screen (there should be some indications in the source bar), this shows me the iMac did not recognize the G4 which worked on previous data transfer.  It looks to me the firewire port on my iMac is dead.  What has gone wrong? Could I accidentally disabled the firewire port by some magic keystroke? (i.e. accidentally fat finger some thing to make it stop working?  Oh, by the way, during the playing around, went to the Final Cut tool bar, I click the View >Video Out > Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main, the result was a  black screen and the esc key was my rescuer - LUCKY LUCKY! Are there any other trouble-shooting techniques to apply before bringing to shop?  Please help!
Sorry for such a long statement, forgive me for unable to make it shorter.  Thank you for your patience. Thanks to all the folks in this board for being so helpful.
    p.s.

    Not sounding good.
If the system Profiler does not see it then there is a basic communication problem between camera and the Mac.
I'm thinking the Firewire port is the culprit as some 800 ports were faulty.
I'd suggest taking the Mac, cable and camera to your nearest Authorized Apple Service Centre and get them to diagnose the issue. eg. let them try to connect the two devices.
Right (control)click the Sequence icon in the Browser and select Item Properties, do the same for a clip.
You can also post screen shots for the Properties.

  • Networking a firewire hard drive from a Mac and access the drive from a PC

I'm trying to network a firewire hard drive from my Mac and access that hard drive from a Windows XP PC. I can see the main internal hard drive but I cannot see the firewire hard drive. Does anybody have a solution or work around?
    Many thanks,
    Roy

Thanks SO MUCH! Not only does it work, BUT IT IS FREE!!!!
See, I have two firewire (external) HDs, connected to a Mac, connected to a PC, connected to a USB external HD... now I can share files from the USB HD to the firewire HDs!
    Gotta love technology!

  • Do all FireWire 400 audio interfaces work on a FireWire 800 bus?

I have assumed that one can continue to use FW400 on the new MacBookPros with an adapter cable. But responding to a post where I noted that I was unable to daisychain an RME FW 400 to a FW800 harddisk, a forum member tells me that many FW400 audio-interfaces don't work on FW800 buses, and thus even an adapter cable would'nt work.
    Is this true?
If so, the whole music/audio community on Mac will have to switch to PC, no other solution.

Although there might be a few specific devices that might have trouble, most firewire 400 devices will work with an adapter to 800. And unlike what a bunch of people on this forum complain about, having a 400 device chained with an 800 WILL NOT slow the 800 down. A few minutes doing some simple research on how firewire works would stop people from spreading incorrect information.

  • Migration Assistant 10.6 only recognizing Firewire option, still not working

I'm attempting to use Migration Asssitant to transfer a user from a MacBook to an iMac. Both systems are using 10.6.8 and are on the same wireless network.
PROBLEM 1 – Migration assistant is only giving the option of transferring via FireWire; it won't give Ethernet or Wireless options. Yes, with an Ethenet cable connected between the computers, and yes, with the computers on the same wireless network.
PROBLEM 2 – Even over Firewire it's not working. With the MacBook in target drive mode, the "Select the System to Migrate From" window shows two drives, both named "Button". Button is not the name of the (one) drive. Selecting one or the other brings you to the "Pick Users To Transfer To This Machine" page, which just hangs forever.
Super frustrating. Help? I couldn't find anything else about this in the forums.
    --J.

Try this. Erase the iMac, reinstall the OS, and on first boot, use the Setup Assistant. See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide, which should be comparable to what you're trying to do. BTW, no need for TDM.

  • FireWirer 400 Ports not working, Fix and/or Add PCI FireWire card

Here are some details about my G5:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model:PowerMac7,3
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Number Of CPUs:2
    CPU Speed: 2.3 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:5.2.4f1
    Serial Number:XXXXXXXXXXXX
    FireWire Bus:
    Maximum Speed:Up to 800 Mb/sec
I have two FireWire 400 ports that aren't working. I normally use the FireWire 800 port, which works fine.
    I've tried:
    - Resetting the NVRAM
    - Resetting the PRAM
    - Resetting the SMU
I haven't been able to run Apple Hardware Test, it is not on my install disc and I must have lost the separate Apple Hardware Test CD... annoying!
    1) First Question - Can I do any more to fix the FireWire ports?
I also have a FireWire PCI card, which looks like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815150103 though I can't be for certain that is that one (PCI card purchased by my business partner 4 years ago and was originally in a PC). It's got 3-ports (2x 800 and 1x 400).
    2) Second Question - am I ok to install this FireWire PCI card into the G5?
(how do I identify for sure what make of PCI card it is?)
If so, which slot and how should I go about doing it?
    Thank you

Hi sohopigeon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device...
If the issue persists, try these steps:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
    3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
    4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
    5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
The 7,3 2.3 was PCI-X, I notice this PCI card is NOT for use in PCI-X G5s...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/PCIFW4P/
While this one works in PCI or PCI-X...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ADS%20Technologies%20Inc./API315/
Not sure about yours, but it does say...
PCI 2.2 compliant and works in 32-/64-bit PCI slot
Works in 3.3v or 5V PCI slot
The one that doesn't work in yours above is also PCI 2.2 compliant.

  • FireWire 400 & 800 Not working

I am hoping someone can help. I have an iMac running leopard 10.5.7. I had a MyBook 1TB hooked up via Firewire and piggy backed off of that was a WD 500gb firewire passport. Everything worked fine until I tried to hot swap the passport. I unplugged it and the MyBook immediately powered down. I tried hooking both of them back up and not go. I had the WD passport replaced and turns out its the iMac firewire. The new WD passport works fine on my Mybook and all the cables I have have been tested. Neither the 400 or 800 firewire are working however the USB are working just fine.
These are some of the remidies I have tried.
    - Reset the PRAM (no go)
    - Reset the SCM (still no go)
    - Took to the apple store the only thing the genius did was boot in to Startup Manager and plug in a firewire HD. (they claim i need a new logic board $890)
Now I am avoid replacing the logic board because I still think it isn't that big of a problem. I mean it may be shorted but from what I have read if the Firewire wasn't working it wouldn't show up in the system profiler and mine is. This is what I said
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
Also I ran a hardware test that came with my mac (restarting hoding down D) and it said no hardware problems.
So now I post in hopes someone may have a suggestions before I replace the logic board.

I've had this problem, it is related to built-in firewire self-resetting fuses (which go off if there was a power surge or there was a short circuit, etc.). In order to fix it, you need to power down our Mac, then DISCONNECT THE POWER MAINS (this is important or otherwise it will not work!). Let the machine be disconnected for 2-5 minutes. Connect the mains back. Voila, it should work (the fuses get reset with no power supplied)! I spent several days until I've found this solution! Good luck!

  • After 10.5.6 Firewire Soundcard doesn't work anymore !!!

    Hi Guys,
I work with Motu "896" and Presonus "Firebox" Soundcards and after the new update 10.5.6 nothing is working ....
I tried Many tricks like :
Reinstalling 10,5,6 combo version, nothing happen
    - Cycling power on Sound card... drive doesn't appear,
    - Different FireWire ports... drive doesn't appear,
    - Disk Utility... drive doesn't appear,
    - System Profiler... reports FIREWIRE BUS--> UNKNOWN DEVICE
Usualy, my Presonus sound card didn't need any drivers to work with osx,
i have contacted Motu online support, to check with them if it s a driver problem, they told me that they didn't know why Apple released this update, because they have so many problems with it, they notice that many firewire devices don't work or make problems with this update...
Is this a test from them to check how many people are using firewire ??? a test about their new policy about firewire ?
If anybody knows something to do, let me know please...

    Hello
After the 10.5.6 update I am only able to get my Motu Ultralite MK3 to work after a reboot
At first I thought I was loosing it when the system went into sleep mode
But, I have turned sleep mode off on the system
if I come back to the computer say after 8+ hrs, the system will not see the motu when it's turned on
if I reboot the system it works fine
I've ran extended diags on the system 2 times and it comes back clean
Motu has yet to respond to my trouble ticket

  • Lacie 2TB Big Disk Extreme   Firewire 800 firewire 400 hi-speed usb2 7200 rpm sku 301201u knocked

    I have a Lacie 2TB Big Disk Extreme + Firewire 800 firewire 400 hi-speed usb2 7200 rpm sku 301201u , which I have been using with an emac ( 1ghz power pc 4 , macos 10.5.8 ) for past few years.
A couple of days ago The drive was hit rather hard on side while on and up , the computer hung as the computer was up on a mac os 10.5.8 partition on this drive . Computer was rebooted and comes up on internal drive, lacie drive just made beep and click sounds ( i am actually deaf and this was what I was told ) every couple of seconds. Attempt was made to boot on CD to use latest available disk utility ( Macos 10.5). Lacie still does not show up. 15-20 minutes into this, I powered lacie down. This is when I started noticing a burned circuitry smell.I powered lacie down and disconnected it at this point.
Most Folks just suggest data recovery which can cost as much as $3000 or more which I really don't have .
I figured I open and examine the internalsof drive . I did so. The circuitry smells
like burned near the point where power comes in and the death diode is located, otherwise circuitry looks fine. One of the two drives , when taken out did not have a burnt smell and the other had a burnt smell towards the center but it dissipated in about an hour after it was taken out. There also was one loose screw inside drives chasing which ended up being one of the 4 screws that holds the disk drive's circuitry. I dont know but I don't think this could have shorted anything out but even though slim it is possible that such happened.
While I have Three DC voltmeters, I could not find the one that would accurately measure the voltage on the external power suppy to see if the output voltage on the 4 pins is accurate . I am still looking for the one meter that can do this.
I figured if I can find the exact drive in like new condition and swap the disks, if the disks are not damaged and if the culprit is actually burnt circuitry, then the drives should come up as they were as though nothing had happened.
I talked to a friend that suggested getting other cases and swapping disks but I guess that is not possible because the two disks are raided? ( raid 0 ) . I am also not even sure if the drives are raided the way they were put into use ( only through firewire 400) as the documentation suggests that only firewire 800 denotes use of built in raid0 but I am not sure. So again assumption is made that the drives are raided .
I contacted dealership of the drive which again suggest that Unfortunately it is not possible to obtain another drive like this one because it has been obsolete and out of manufacture for a long time.  It is also a risky idea because if the problem is not with the drive enclosure hardware, there is a genuine risk of making the recovery process more difficult, or impossible.
This though does not follow logically. I have been able to see the exact drive with the same sku number offered as new or excellent condition more than 1/2 dozen times in the past few weeks so I guess drive can be acquired and tested before any such swap. If drives are not the culprit , I figure after a swap with a new enclosure and everything other than drives, the thing should not even be noticed and all should work as they did before the accident. If the drives are the cause , then the thing has been on 1/2 hour after the accident so the swap should not do any more damage or cause future recovery attempts any more issues than already might be there.
Any sound advice is greatly appreciated.

I tried the two good disks in the main chasis with new cables and power supply , and I could not get them to come on or show.
I put the good disks back  in the second chasis with new cable and power suppy and it again shows ( prompts telling you that it sees a readable MAc OS disk and asks if you want to Initialize it ).
I put the first set together again with new cable and power supply and the light does not come on anymore . being hearing impaired , i put my head on the drive and hear this clicking sound every one or two seconds. The fan operates . The drive does not show when rebooting and it does not show on the disk utility. The drive does not smoke but smell of burned mica ( circuitry ) is still in my throat after a couple of hours.
From what I have learned the possibility exists that each drive is calibrated and the calibration is added to the control board , So like chances are that even if the two original drives are good and connected properly and everything else is good, they might and probably just wont work with a control board of another even exact drive. There are three tables / charts  marked on each drive and specific locations marked on each chart which differ between drives . These I think are from calibrating the drives.
So I guess its data recovery...
Lacie Data Recovery wants $600 ( $300 x  2 drives ) if they recover data without need for a clean room , $3000 ( $1500 x 2 drives )  if there is need for clean room. If they don't recover , you dont pay , if they recover and you do not want to pay, then they just send you the damaged disk ( or perhaps keep it , or smash it then return it to you) .
There are many other data recovery services so I guess a few days to sift through them but I guess the maker reference should be the best way ( I think its actually a sub-company that lacie forwards data recovery to.
Too many factors are involved. One that will such be a secure thing to do or 6 months later  you find out that someone opened 10 accounts under your name , or emptied your bank account ( thats actually not a problem because there is almost never any money in  my bank account) . So security is a concern. I have encountered individuals that make it their business stealing peoples stuff from their disks. Once I even had one Tech guy which was refered to solve a problem I had , copying disks contents right in front of me for absolutely no reason. So I ask him what are you doing, and he says , I am copying everything just to make sure they are safe ( : )  )
Then there is the dalai lama , everything happens for a reason scenario. In which case I guess I have to consider the whole thing as Good Omen. and just forget about it and go on with my life ( maybe I go work in Mc Donalds : )  )
The bottom line is I can't believe that I am such an idiot not to have a proper backup system in place .
Thank you for the links, I will check them out.

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

  • Cannot copy files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1

I'm having an issue copying files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1. Both machines are running OS 10.4.10 and have all of the available updates have been applied. When I connect to the Mac at work using ARD, I can see everything without any problems. However, when I attempt to copy a file onto my PowerBook desktop, I lose my connection to it and ARD tries to re-establish a connection and just keep looping. I'm stumped as to why this keeps happening. When I try the above from work using my PowerBook, there are no problems. Could this problem be related to my DSL Carrier (Verizon). Anyone have any ideas? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff thanks for that, the only problem is I cant update any of the system software at work
And I cant just copy the folders over and use my iPod as a hard drive to take them home and put them on my iTunes as the file names on some tracks are to long

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.
