Firewire to internal hd crashes OS.

The title says it pretty much. This is my second error I've had trying to move a folder from an external firewire drive to my second internal drive. Apple phone help proved less than helpful, anyone here have any ideas or sharing similar problems? I had to come to these forum to learn how to rewire my bluetooth that was installed wrong. Day 3 spent fixing my brand new computer.GRRRRRR.

Perhaps the firmware used by the FW bridge needs updating?
No idea really, all my FW drives are quite new, use Oxford bridge, good cables.
My guess is there might be directory corruption. How large is the file and is it on a Mac HFS style partition?

  • Sleeping firewire drive causes system crash

I have a 320 GB external firewire seagate drive connected to my Dual Ghz Quicksilver G4. At least twice a day, when I try to access that drive, I experience a system crash, what I believe to be a kernal panic. I get a message telling me I need to shut my computer down and restart it. I am thinking this is not so good for my computer.
So, either the hard drive is the problem or it's the third party firewire card i have installed in one of my PCI slots. But here's the thing, other drives are connected to that card.
Would keeping the Seagate drive awake stop this from happening? It goes to sleep all the time. Have others experienced problems with the seagate drives? Should I stop using it?

Hi, Aaron. Welcome to the Discussions.
If you are seeing this message, that indicates a kernel panic.
There could be a problem with the FireWire drive or the card. If disconnecting the drive for a few days results in no additional panics, then it is the drive. For that, I'd contact Seagate. If not, the card becomes suspect. An examination of the panic log might prove helpful.
You can also try running Step 1 of the process specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ against the Seagate FireWire drive.
Checking the FireWire cables, trying different cables or ports, checking that the card is installed correctly, checking that you assembled the Seagate drive and enclosure correctly (sounds like you built the FW drive) are some other troubleshooting steps to consider. The FireWire enclosure itself may be defective.
See also my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics, including tips like those above.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
You maybe unable to prevent the FireWire drive from sleeping. Secondary hard drives (second internal, as well as external drives) may not respect the "Put the hard drive(s) to sleep when possible" option if de-selected. I discuss this particular issue in my "Spinning Beach Ball Of Death (SBBOD)" FAQ, specifically in the section entitled "SBBOD spins for 30-35 seconds. You may hear your hard drives spinning up."
    Good luck!

  • Snow Leopard on external firewire hard drive keeps crashing/freezing

I own a 2006 iMac that came with OS X 10.4 Tiger installed and it has always been stable and reliable. Lately I had the need to use some software that only ran on OS X Snow Leopard so I installed an external Firewire (Western Digital) 260GB hard drive and put OS X Snow Leopard on it. For the first few months, everything ran fine, but as the drive slowly filled up (or perhaps with time), my Leopard external drive started giving problems, most commonly, it would lose its Ethernet connection for no reason, or I would get a line of black/multicoloured pixels appearing across my Firefox browser (or something else weird would happen to the display), followed by the rainbow wheel spinning indefinitely... this happened more and more often, when I opened too many applications at the same time, or more than 3-4 tabs in Firefox. Occasionally the screen would "white out" or go completely black. I'd have to physically switch the computer off and on again.
However, I still have not even used 20% of the hard disk space so its not a matter of the hard drive becoming full...
The Tiger internal drive is still running 100% fine so it's not a problem with my RAM...
I've tried verifying/repairing the disk, but it doesn't show any problems. Any ideas about what I should try doing next?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Just so I understand this correctly:
    1. Your internal hard drive is on Tiger?
    2. Your external (a WD) is on Snow Leopard?
    3. Where is the "partition"? Do you have either drive partitioned?
    4. You only have the problems when you are booted from/working on something using the external drive?
I've seen quite a few posts here regarding problems with external Western Digital drives; it appears that their internal drives are fine, but the externals do not play nice with Macs after a while (maybe the enclosure they use??).
In any case, if your problems are only when using the Western Digital, I'd say return it if possible, get it replaced, or buy a different brand and use the WD as a not-often-needed extra backup.

  • Is my firewire cable causing a crash?

My iPod will no longer mount using a firewire cable. It does not mount to the desktop, nor in iTunes. iTunes tries to open but just hangs with the spinning wheel of death. When I force quit, my iMac crashes into a kernel panic.
No problems when using a USB cable. I am running 10.2.8, and have the newest versions of iTunes and iPod Updater. Previously, my firewire cable worked just fine.
Any ideas what may be going on?

    OK...easy fix:
Disconnect all cables, shut down, unplug power for a few minutes.
Re-connect, restart and everything seems fine now. Also ran Disk Repair from the Installer Disk to fix anything suspicious.

  • HT1341 Printing over firewire causes mac osx crash

I have had my Epson R2400 connected over Firewire to my MBP (10.8.3) for many months with no problem. Now whenever I print a document the MBP crashes and reboots without a message. I have tried a repair disk permissions, clearing teh caches, resetting the printer, reinstalling the driver and plugging the FW cable direct to the MBP (was via the Thunderbolt display) and neither had any effect. The printer does work over USB but that uses a USB port I can't spare.
Any suggestions on what might be the problem?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Are you using a FW 800> 400 adapter? Your printer is older and most likely only has FW 400 capability.

  • Missing apps after Time Machine restore after internal HD crash.

2 TB internal HD on 2011 iMac crashed.  Apple store replaced hard drive.  It took 25 hours to restore from the Time Machine backup.  Immediately I noticed that many of the desktop icons were missing and were replaced by large question marks.  These include App Store, Mail, Firefox, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, Safari, Quicktime Player, Photo Booth, Garageband, and Facetime.  When I select  Software Update...  I get no response.  I have no install media as it all came installed on the iMac I bought last year.  I am on Mountain Lion.  I turned off Time Machine to not confuse matters more.  thx

Was able to get Firefox from a locally networked old Powerbook.  Connected to internet and downloaded iTunes 10.6.3.  Bookmarks and all music seems to be ok.  Now I just need a was to find which app is missing for "Software update..." and "App store...".

  • Unreliable mounting of Firewire disks and Finder crashing

On both my MacPro3,1 and MacBookPro5,1 running 10.6.2, mounting of Firewire disks is unreliable. Sometimes a partition being mounted does not show up in the Finder (but does appear as mounted to the df command). When that is the case, launching Disk Utility will cause the mounted partition to appear in the Finder. On mounting the disk, the system log always shows these entries:
    21/01/2010 14:32:39 diskarbitrationd[14] unable to probe /dev/disk2s1 (status code 0x0000002D).

    Hi Dr. T,
    > There is an OnDemand key in there which looks
like it may be doing something useful.
I'm afraid that I don't know anything about the contents of those files but yes, an OnDemand key sounds like it might do what you want. Although I'm still fuzzy on this point, I gather that what you want is for the device file to be created in /dev but for the volume to not be mounted. As long as the device file is created, you can use the path to the device file as an argument to the "mount" command to mount the drive at any time. I assume that one of "the relevant parameters" in the fstab is the path to the device file.
I don't know how well I understand what goes on "under the hood" here because I don't do this a lot. I was of the impression that if you eject or detach a drive, the device file is deleted from the device tree. However, if you merely unmount the drive, the device file persists and you can easily mount the drive again.
By the way, it is supposed to be possible to use fstab with only data that persists between boots. You can use drive UUIDs or labels to refer to partitions. You can use the df command to discover the appropriate device files at the moment and then "diskutil info <device>" to get the UUID.

  • Firewire and USB Transfer Crashing

    Can anyone help,
I have a PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11, Almost everytime I decide to do a large amount of transfering via Firewire or USB it seems to crash and I have to restart the machine, sometimes all I do is plug my iPod Touch in, to sync and it crashes. Has anyone else had this problem before?

if it happens with different devices, could be a hardware problem with the ports
    or the hard drive.
if PowerBook is under warranty, you may want to get it serviced.

  • Firewire or internal boot?

I have a question about which would be better to boot from, firewire, or the internal hard drive in my G4 Cube. I know that the max transfer rate for firewire is 400 something mbps, but the firewire enclosure i have is for a 2.5" ide drive, which at most ide drives run at is 133. I'm not sure, but I think the Cubes HDD runs at 66, it may be 100.. but yeah, you get the idea, which is better to boot from?

    Hi -
...which is better to boot from?
    The internal drive.
Although the internal bus is ATA/66, the net data transfer rate to and from the internal drive will be faster than that with a firewire drive.
FWIW, a firewire drive will have a faster data transfer rate than the optical drive, but the internal hard drive will be faster yet.

  • Firewire or internal sata drive

which is the better drive for recording audio using logic pro 8 on a mac pro intel 2.0 internal sata or firewire, thank you

My experience says that internal SATA definitely is more stable than External firewire.
Besides many other external devices (audio interface for example) also uses the firewire bus.
Also you shouldn't find the cheapest option when buying a hard drive. Your drive is an essential device, and losing data is no fun.

  • External Firewire HDD causing finder crash

I just bought an external Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB HDD. The thing is very finicky about how you plug it in and start it up, do the wrong sequence and it won't ever show up on the desktop.
When I have it plugged in via FW800 The thing causes my finder to become non responsive. When I try to relaunch it, it never comes back online. The only way out of it is a hard shutdown. The drive will work, but only for a brief time and then it will hang causing a never ending spinning beachball fail. I've been reading up on a lot of similar issues ever since upgrading to 10.5.7. I've downloaded Seagate's diagnostic utility, but its only feature is a "test" which never gets going while I'm hooked up via firewire.
As we speak I've swapped the firewire800 for the USB2 connection and all seems to be going well. What's the deal? Is this firmware hang affecting only firewire? Should I stick with the USB until this gets resolved? Is Firewire THAT much faster than USB that I'll be stuck in the file transfer dark ages until this gets fixed?

no no no, usb is plenty fast enough for most poeple, i would not even worry about it, if you can get it working good on usb, go with it. I hate seagates, but thats me, the only reason you will need really fast firewire is for if you do a lot of movie/music editing or changing, and even then the only REALLY long backup will be the first one only, the rest will probably be rlatively quite short.

  • Flaky Firewire bus after bad crash

I had a really bad crash last week while working in FCP (slow beachball then a total freeze). I had an AJA IOHD attached to the rear FW800 port; for those not in the know, that's a self-powered video I/O box for capture and playback that uses FW instead of a PCI slot. It takes over the WHOLE FW bus when you use it, can't even have a hard drive plugged in or it freaks out. Anyway, after the crash the IOHD was acting weird, would freeze the computer whenever FCP was launched. I reinstalled the drivers and ran fsck in SU mode and got the machine back to the point it wouldn't freeze. But the IO was still being glitchy, kept going briefly 'offline' and dropping frames on playback.
The IOHD runs fine on my MacBook Pro. And, I just tried the front FW800 port on the Mac Pro and that works fine too. So the issue seems limited to the back FW800 port. What could I have done to it? It's not totally burned out, cuz a FW800 drive plugged in back there runs normally. But it just doesn't want to communicate with the IOHD properly now. Not sure if there's anything software-wise I can do to fix it; if it is a hardware repair, anyone know what a FW bus replacement runs? Or would they have to swap the motherboard? (and of course, my Applecare just ran out)
    JK

Uggh, no good. It was doing fine after I reset the SMU, but while I was running video through the IOHD from FCP it started to drop frames again. Also, bits of digital static and noise all over the external monitor (connected via HDMI to IOHD) even though the footage itself is clean. The unit was not going online/offline at first but then FCP froze, and when I force quit it that behavior returned as well. FCP report just said "hang" as the cause of the problem. Similar flaky behavior (though not as bad) in Motion.
Anything else I should try before I declare that FW port borked? Reset the PRAM perhaps?

  • System Prefs International Formats crashing

I've done something, not sure what, to a setting in there, and now System Preferences unexpectedly quits when trying to access it again. Also does the same thing when trying to access Date & Time (my menubar clock has completely disappeared and keeps blinking like it's trying to show something).
I've trashed the following plists: com.apple.MenuBarClock.plist, com.apple.systempreferences.plist, and a couple others, logged in and out AND restarted after each one all to no avail.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

hmm, I don't know what else it could be. have you installed any programs recently?
also, try trashing your global preferences plist. it's hidden so it's easiest to do it from terminal.
enter the following command in terminal
    rm ~/preferences/.global*
    and log out/in.
