all my itunes is on ezquest storage w/ firewire ports only.
how do i transfer that to mac air????
mac air only has USB port.

Plug it into a Mac with a FireWire connection, put both that Mac and the MacBook Air on a network, start Personal File Sharing or File Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences on the other machine, choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu on the MacBook Air, and provide the other machine's IP address followed by an administrator username and password on it.

Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

X1carbon to mac air with thunderbolt display

am selling my two x1 carbons (and (2) 3.0docks and (4 )24inch montiros) and replacing with mac airs and using their thunderbolt dock and just curious if anyone has used this setup, i hear the thunderbolt monitors work really well?? i just can't take the usb docks never working

Target Display Mode is not the same as Target Disk Mode. The latter is done using Firewire. The former is only currently usable with a 27" iMac with a Thunderbolt port. Target Display Mode is for using the iMac's display with another computer that has a Thunderbolt port.

HT6114 MAC Air slow to boot after 10.9.2 update.

I have a 2011 MAC Air. After the 10.9.2 upgrade my laptop takes about 20 minutes to boot from power off. Once started it works fine, it is just extremely slow to boot. Prior to the update I could boot in about 10 seconds. Any thoughts how to resolve this issue?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Need help on USB hub for mac air 13 inch (2 external hardisk and Iphone)

Hello everyone, I am a new macbook air user, and currently using 2 external hardisk of 1TB and 2TB. I am looking for usb hub that support both of my external hardisk, ethernet and iphone too. The problem is, limited usb hub for mac air and bad review on balkin product, any advice for me?
One more thing, I just moved from window to mac for the first time, and bought Western Digital 2TB external hardisk, the problem is, I can't save any video/audio file that I downloaded from internet in macbook to be transfer/move to this WD 2TB external hardisk, except for back up and time machine. It refuse to except any file that I try to move in to the external hardisk Can anyone help me? compactibility problem?

First, I have not found any of my hubs to have an issue with my MBA. Just make sure that if any peripherals you attached to the hub are adequately powered. Either by having the hub independently powered, or the devices having their own power supply.
The drive problem you have may be due to the file formatting. If this drive is formatted NTFS, then in many cases you can write to it using a network protocol, but OS X can't write to it if attached directly to the computer, e.g. USB, SATA, FireWire. You will neeed to either format the drive as a HFS+ drive, or use software that enables OS X to write directly to t a NTFS formatted drive, such as NTFS-3G. DISCLAIMER: As the information you provide for your circumstances is limited, this is but one suggestion amongst many, that explain your situation.

Mac Air Migration

I just picked up my 80 gig Mac Air from the Apple Store and am having some issues with migration. I bought the usb to ethernet adaptor because I thought that would be quicker than wireless migration. I have about 40 gig to transfer onto the mac air. I am doing an ethernet migration and is says it has 17 hrs and 12 min left. Should it take this long for an ethernet migration for 40 gig? The only thing I can think of is that on my intel macbook that I am migrating from I did not turn off the wireless, so do you think i can still be trying to communicate with the router? What happens if I just power of both macs and stop the migration? Thanks

this is a solution. Very many migrations fail, be it wireless or over ethernet. It seems that migrations from a 10.5.2 Mac work better while from Panther or Tiger is is rather "iffy". This is my list of steps which has worked every time but needs a hard drive with USB 2 and optionally Firewire. Here we go:
Prepare the source Mac, cleaning caches etc. with Cocktail. (Pilot Mode all options, resatart)
Install a fresh copy of SuperDuper 2.5 on the source Mac
Connect an external drive with Firewire/USB capability
Run SuperDuper, erasing the external drive and making a full clone.
Re-start the source Mac from the fresh clone and slim down the system so it fits nicely on the small drive of the Air.
Shut down the source Mac and prepare the USB cable for connecting to the Air
Start up the Air in the account you made when starting up the first time and with all system updates in place and connect the USB cable. The drive will show up after a while.
Open the Migration Assistant and choose the method “From a Time Machine backup or other disk”
Choose the System of your source Mac, copied to the external drive
Choose your Account to import and the Applications etc. If there is not enough space back to step 5...
Sit back and wait. This can be very long and the “thermometer” and time estimate make not always great sense.
Restart Air and set the log in to log into your migrated account and start using it!

Mac Air locked disk

My Mac Air hung the other day and would only boot with the flashing question mark whichis a very terrible sign. I was able to hold the option key and get back into the disk diag screen. It says the disk is ok but you cannot select anything other than verify. I tired to do a re-install of Mac OS but it says the disk is locked. Is there anything that can be done? I have never seen an error like this before. I can install Mac OS on an external drive and the basic hardware all seem ok except it does not see the SSD so my concern is that my SSD is toast. If anyone has any ideas it would be great

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Virus on my mac air please help every time i click something on a safe website or any even apple website I get redirected to stupid websites that are always random and different each time also when I'm on youtube/apple websites etc. my computer replaces letters and numbers with blue words or numbers that redirect me please help. 1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Accessing texts between mac air and iphone

K...probably pretty basic stuff..just not for me...we have been linked between our mac and iphone for texting so we could use either device simultaneously. Somehow, that option has shut off. the mac message bar has us listed as "away" and "offline" but it won't let us click on either to change it. The "enable" box is checked as "on" and we can send texts to our contacts from the computer but the "sent from" id is our email address and not our phone number (maybe a default thing since we are listed as offline). I can't figure out how to turn this option back on...any help? thanks

A few notable differences:
MacBook Air
- Thiner and lighter than the MacBook Pro
- Does not have a CD/DVD drive, Ethernet port, FireWire or IR capabilities
- Has an SSD hard drive which means data access is much faster than traditional platter-based hard drives
- Has RAM soldered to the logic board which does not allow it to be upgraded in the future
- SSD drives offer much less storage than traditional hard drives by default, aftermarket/third upgrade upgrade options are available but very expensive
- Supports up to 8GB of RAM
MacBook Pro
- Bulkier/heavier than MacBook Air, Retina models close the weight gap but are more expensive
- The non-Retina models have far more peripheral port options, the Retina models (like the MacBook Air) lack things like Ethernet, FireWire, CD/DVD
- The Retina MacBook Pros have double Thunderbolt ports for increased expansion capabilities.
- The 15" MacBook Pro as well as both Retina models offer much higher screen resolution options
- The 15" MacBook Pro & 15" Retina MacBook Pro offer discrete GPUs instead of shared GPUs
- Supports up to 16GB of RAM
- Allows for user upgradeable RAM & HD, hard drives with much larger capacities. Can also accept 3rd party SSDs
Regarding your needs, is 256 GB of storage (which is a $300 "add on" by the way) adequate enough for your needs? Keep in mind that the 13" MacBook Pro for $1199 has 500 GB of storage, putting a 512 GB SSD in a MacBook Air is an extra $500 and is only available as an upgrade on the $1499 model.
If you do end up with a MacBook Air, I'd recommend getting the unit equipped with 8GB of RAM.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
     a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. The battery is distinct from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

I have a Mac Air, I opened a web page and it died within a nano second, then I got the beachball for about 40 mins so I turned it off. Now I cant start it up again, I get the chime, the apple a grey screen then I get the pinwheel, it's still going, help

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. HAVE NEW 13.3 MAC AIR AND when using it to open sites in safari I have no issue until I go to a link page that is a pdf file or I am trying to save the screen info as a pdf. I only get a black screen with no data, cannot find solution in help menu

when i open sites in safari the page opens fine if it is not a pdf based page.
Once i open a site that has a link to another page that is a pdf based page the page comes up as a black screen with no info showing
If I open a site that gices me an open to save a file to a word, excel type document or a pdf , everything works fine until I try to save the information to a PDF and again the screen goes black
I have tried the safari help site but to no avail, does anyone have a solution to thid problem. (I do have the abode ofr mac program loaded)

If you delete all the Adobe Reader stuff it will probably fix this. For almost everything, the Apple pdf handling works better.

Is there a simple way of linking the same excel folder on my imac and mac air, so as the one on my imac would automacily update when i return home, from the mac air? Fairly new to all this, so any help would be appreciated.

Open a Finder window and you should have a folder called iClouDrive in your home folder. Drag your documents or folders you want to share into this folder and it will be available on your other computer (look in the same folder).
As already mentioned Dropbox is a good solution; however, I like to use my free 5 GB from Apple's iCloud because I am not using very much space there. I reserve my Dropbox for other uses such as family photo and recipe sharing.

I have moved my music to my new mac air but now it won't sync with my ipod or my iphone 4s

I have transferred mymusic to my new mac air from an acer laptop via an external hard drive and it's all there on the mac but now itunes won't sync with my ipod touch or my iphone 4s.
With the ipod it says 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. Could not connect to the device " It also doesn't show up at all in the devices section.
With the iphone it says there isn't enough space to sync even though I have experimented and unticked various things including photos which takes up a lot of space. It seems like it wants to sync with the empty space on the iphone (very small!) and not with the whole thing. I have tried various things suggested on this forum but have had no luck.
