Firewire to Thunderbolt, Firewire to Thunderbolt

Are there any Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt adaptors out there?

Ahhhh, this is so frustrating! Just bought the new iMac Refresh.... no Firewire 400, only one Firewire 800!?!! ****. This Thunderbolt thing is cool, but it needs some adapters. From my research they say it's going to be possible, but there are none in production that I can find.
I have 3 Firewire 800 external harddrives and one Firewire 400 external soundcard, I've daisy chained the harddrives together and am either going to buy this firewire 800/400 hub or a 400 to 800 converter and a Firewire 800 hub.

Or
I can also get a 400 to 800 converters cable (elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter for Mac)
http://tinyurl.com/3gcq5gl
And a Firewire repeater (Kramer VS-8FW 8-Port FireWire Repeater / Hub)

The first option is cheaper ($46.67) and the second more expensive ($6.99+$120=$126.99). Probably just going to go with the cheaper option and hopefully it'll do the trick for the time being.
Hopefully some Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt converters come out soon! We need those ports!!!

I want to transfer data from my old Mac book pro to my new one using migrate.  The old computer doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Does the Thunderbolt to Firewire or the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work to connect them and transfer data?
    Thank you!

Yes, use a Firewire cable and the FW to Tbolt adaptor.

If FW is the only connection the camera has then yes Thunderbolt Firewire adapter is correct. It's available from a number of sources including Apples own online store, in the USA the link would be:

  • Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter not good for networking?!

    Hi folks,
I have been successfully running a mini Firewire network between my old iMac and my MacPro for several years just using a FW 800 to FW 400 cable.
NOW I bought the new iMac with Thunderbolt and the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. Unfortunalely it was impossible for me to set up the network again. Is it right that the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter will not work the same as the "pure" Firewire connection before, because of the different hardware or internal protocols? Do I really have to switch over to a standard ethernet connection with additional hardware like router hub or switch and forget my cool and so easy Firewire network?
I read about that problem here:
    macworld.com/article/2016066/migration-assistant-thunderbolt-firewire-adapter-hu h.html
    That would be a shame....

Be certain you have inserted the cable plug into the computer jack so that essentially ALL of the metal end has disappeared inside the computer jack.

Then it sounds like the FW800 to 400 adapter just gets in the way. You don't have FW800 case? on my MDD G4 I added and used FW800 controller and cases from OWC and Sonnet.

  • MacBook Air + Thunderbolt-Firewire Adapter + LaCie FW800 Drive = Freeze

I recently bought a new MacBook Air 13" including the TB-to-FW800 adapter from Apple. I own an older external LaCie FireWire 800 drive I want to use with.
From time to time (i.e. not always) when I connect the LaCie drive to the MacBook Air, OS X 10.8.2 freezes completely so that I have to hard reset it. Seems that someone here has a similar problem:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1419956
    Is there any solution available?
    Thanks!

The only time my system freezes is if I try to boot with the thunderbolt/firewire drive connected.
I have had no problem connecting the drive after boot has been completed.
Which reminds me I need to retest now that I am at 10.8.2.

  • Thunderbolt-firewire connection

I can not connect my new iMAC 17" computer through Thunderbolt-Firewire cable with my canon camcorder. On my previous iMAC with firewire connection works fine. I am using Pemiere Pro CS6, and now the capture does not work.
    Any thought?

It's important to understand that Thunderbolt and FireWire are two different things, with different cables and ports.  Make sure you're using FierWire.

  • Firewire 400 to 2013 imac thunderbolt not working HELP!

    Hi.
I just bought a new imac to work with a lot of family videos that I recorded on a Sony firewire camcorder. I bought Apple thunderbolt to firewire adapter and a belkin firewire 800 to firewire mini 400 cable, and the Imac won't find or recongnize the camera!
I have to do a movie for a very important family project and I dont know what to do.

I am trying to connect a Sony HDR-HC7 camcorder. Some years ago I bought a new tapeless camecorder and I have downloaded movies from that camcorder to imovie before. But now it doesn't appear on the imovie supported cameras.
On the other hand it works on finalcut demo.
    What can I do?
I need to get a $300 dllr program to do a very basic thing?
Imovie its a mess. It canno't take advantage of the new hardware because its 32 bit, it crashes a lot (for example when deleting clips an sending them to the trash) and now its incompatible with my old camecorder!
I used imovie since version 1. What happened to the reliable apple software we used to have?

  • Thunderbolt firewire hub

Has there been a thunderbolt firewire hub put out on the market yet? I want to try it with Wirecast 4. Wish to connect two firewire cameras

sonnet technology announced early intentions of putting out ThunderBolt adapters.
Now that they have had some time to decide what that really means, the product family has taken the form of a ThunderBolt to Expresscard/34 adapter and their existing cards:

  • Change the recording level for recording with Thunderbolt-Firewire-Mixer

    Hey,
I just bought a PHONIC Helix Board 24 Universal for recording some music via Firewire.
Because my IMac has no Firewire-slot, I am using a Thunderbolt-Firewire-Adapter and a Firewire 400-800 cable.
If I try to record some music it sounds really horrible.
It seems that the reason is the recording level which can be changed while using the internal micro but not with firewire-Thunderbolt.
The recording level is set on max, resulting in overmodulation and noise.
Is there any way to adujust the recording level?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello Jshen6,
Have you tried looking at the examples in LabVIEW under Hardware Input and Output>>Synchronization? The Analog Input-Synchronization.vi example shows you how to synchronize AI across multiple devices in various configurations and for various types of hardware. Would you mind listing what hardware you are using? Are all three devices taking the same data (voltage, strain, acceleration, etc)?

  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

Sonnet has an TB-capable expresscard adapter.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 10.8.2 Frozen after returning to sleep and attaching thunderbolt firewire adapter

Hi to all, i'm writing because probably there's a bug on the latest osx 10.8.2 so, could you check that what happens to me is equal to you too?
I've a Macbook Pro Retina from about 2 weeks and in the last 3 days i've seen 2 freeze of the system, i couldn't make anything, only force power off with the power button. After some tests i've noted and isolated the issue, so this is what happens:
    - remove the thunderbolt to firewire adapter (if attached)
    - wait until mac goes to sleep
    - go out of sleep
    - attach the adapter and...
    - system frozen
how i've told the only way to restore is force the mac to power off.
I'll wait your answer and solutions (if there are)
    Thank you
This is the consolle where you can see the issue:
and this is when all works fine:

I'm having this exact behaviour on my 13" Retina MacBook Pro running 10.8.2 when inserting a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter. System freezes hard, have to hold down power button to reset.

  • HT201338 Can I connect a firewire 400 to firewire 800 adapter and then a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter(standard Thunderbolt to firewire adapter) together to digitize video from a miniDV video camcorder?

I have a 10 year Canon MiniDV camcorder that I used to connect via firewire to digitize the data.  Now my IMac only has a Thunderbolt connector and my camcorder uses the older firewire 400 standard.  I would like to digitize the video into my IMac.  How can I do this?

I did a little looking around and found a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, and then a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter, but no Thunderbolt to Firewire 400. Amazon and Apple stores had the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable and Amazon had the Firewire 400 to 800 adapater.
Wherever you get the cables, ask them if it will work OK with what you want to try and do - if they don't know make sure you can return if there is a problem. I think it will because the Thunderbolt side is so much faster than what the camera can pump out to it. If it were the other way (Thunderbolt device to a Firewire computer I would expect that to fail since the Firewire could never keep up with the data rate of the incoming Thunderbolt device).
Maybe if you have a local Mac user group or a friend with an older mac with a firewire 400 port you could do it this way too?
    Good luck

  • Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter backwards compatible?

So I just bought a new 4TB G-Raid w/ Thunderbolt. Additionally, I bought a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, so I can connect my Firewire 800 equipped mac to the hard drive. IT DOESN'T WORK . I've read that they only work with a Thunderbolt equipped mac, to a female fw 800 cable. However, the deeper I've dug, I've heard that they are indeed backwards compatible (specifically with the G-tech drives), or that there can be software drivers that can make them backwards compatible. Anyone have any ideas??
    Speccs: 2010 mbp 17 inch. 2.53 ghz i5. 8gb RAM.

Yes, I know that my mbp doesn't have a TB port, but I was hoping that the adapter would solve this problem, as it would change the connectivity to FW 800. I realize that is bottlenecking it, but I didn't have much choice because of the harddrive I had to buy. As for the eSata connections, I've never used that method. So I guess I wouldn't really know where to begin in considering that. However, the current drive I have now is:

Thank you for your help! If all else fails, I'm just going to have to travel a bit further to buy a 4tb drive with FW, and return the one I just bought. Hopefully that's not the case....:/

  • Daisy-chaining firewire 400 and firewire 800?

I would like to daisy-chain two Western Digital MyBook Pros to a Macbook:
    - FW 400 from Macbook to first drive
    - FW 800 between the drives
Would this work or not? I have one of those, they have 2 x FW 800, 1 x FW 400, 1 x USB at back.
    (If not, I'll buy a 'Premium' which has 2 x FW 400, and 1 x USB..)

    JoeyR wrote:
I'm not sure if the hardware in the first drive, that's connected by firewire 400 is "smart" enough to jump the data over to the FW800 connectors for daisy chaining.
Just pulled this from the WD site. I would say this indicates it would work. You won't get more speed but they should work daisy chained. This indicates the drive is smart enough to do this.
+Question: Will Western Digital FireWire 400 (1394a) external hard drives work connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port?+
+Answer: The FireWire 800 Specification (1394b) states that FireWire 400 devices will work while connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port. The FireWire 400 cable (4-6 pin or 6-6 pin) will not connect to a FireWire 800 port (9 pin) therefore you will need to connect the hard drive using a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable (1394a to 1394b cable). These cables are available at most computer stores.+

  • HT5299 Where can I get a Thunderbolt SPLITTER? (Thunderbolt-Thunderbolt-Thunderbolt) I am unable to daisy chain due to no chassis outputs.

Where can I get a Thunderbolt SPLITTER? (Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt & Thunderbolt.) I cannot daisy chain because of no Thunderbolt OUTPUT on the chassis.

I have been keeping up with the Thunderbolt stuff for a year now. It is pretty disappointing that no one, Apple or otherwise seems to have any interest in Thunderbolt. I have a Thunderbolt external drive, and I am quite pleased with its speed.
I think there is an inherent flaw in how Thunderbolt works. It relies on devices to be daisy chained together. This is great concept, but there's a problem. Say I have a Thunderbolt Buffalo external drive, a Blackmagic Intensity device, and a monitor that connects via the Thunderbolt port. Oh wait, all 3 devices must be at the end of the chain! Even if I was to spend over $1000 on the apple monitor, I am still limited to the number of devices I can connect.
In other words if most Thunderbolt devices have to be at the end of the chain, then how on earth can the technology ever be truly useful?
