Firewire to USB or Thunderbolt cable

Need to get an adapter to bring video from firewire to USB or thunderbolt.  Suggestions?

Apple has announced (on 6/11/12) a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter for use on the Air, but it is not in the Apple Online Store as of yet. This would seem to be the most practical solution.

Any word on a firewire to thunderbolt cable?  Got a new MacBook Pro and no way to access my data because my data is stored on an external hard drive accessible only by firewire!

This is really starting to be annoying.  Apple said this adapter would be available in July.
Of course we could always buy the Thunderbolt Display.  For $999.  Complete with USB 2 ports.  That's not why we bought your MBP-Retina, Guys.  We expected connectivity -- high speed connectivity -- as you promised.
I also had an Apple store rep tell me that the adapter would be availble in September.  Hate to say it but it feels like Apple is resorting to selling vaporware.  It's a page out of the Bill Gates play book.

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

I don't have a H4 but do have a H2. Did you set the H4 as a audio interface, after you plug it in choose interface in the H4 screen?
Did you choose the H4 input channel in the track info?

  • Firewire / Thunderbolt cable (not adaptor!)

Does anyone know if there is a Firewire / Thunderbolt cable, i.e. plug to plug, not plug to socket? Seems ridiculous to have to buy an adpator and a Firewire cable to connect my audio interface...

Conversion requires circuitry, so a simple cable won't work. While it's not impossible someone would build a converter into a cable, I wouldn't think it likely that anyone would do so. So I think you'll need to buy the adapter and the appropriate cable.

  • PPCS3 and "Firewire to USB" cable

We're fitting out one of our new labs, and the IT people have suggested a nice micro-form factor unit which attaches to the back of the monitor via VESA.
Alas, no Firewire port, and no scope for an expansion card of any kind.
They have suggested a "FireWire to USB" cable as a possible solution. I didn't think such a thing was available, but they sent me the link and lo and behold. The graphic indeed shows a video camera (FW) connected to a PC's USB port.
Does anyone have any experience with such a cable and Premier? My understanding is that the Capture window can only "see" firewire devices? Is my assumption correct?
    kind regards
    Matthew P

correct, premiere only recognizes firewire, not usb. also you would be limited to the speed of usb port, so you could have isssues with that as well.

  • Firewire to USB adapter?

I recently purchased a iMac 27 i5. Love it. But it has only USB and thunderbolt ports. My beloved Nikon 4000 film scanner only has firewire connectivity. I found a firewire to USB adapter online and purchased one. It came from China. When I plugged it into my self-powered USB hub, I got a message saying a USB device was drawing too much power and it shut down one or more other USB devices to protect the computer. I couldn't print. I realized the adapter might be the problem and when I disconnected it, my printer came back online.
Q1 -- has anybody found a firewire to USB adapter that works?
Q2 -- is there another workaround to connect firewire devices to the new iMacs?
Q3 -- is it possible to have a USB port put into the scanner hardware?
    George

Thanks, Niel. That makes sense ... should have thought of that ... assuming that will reduce the excessive power draw?  I see Apple sells the 400-800 cable.

  • Hello, I have a Sony GV D300E mini DV editing deck.MY imac latest I7 model does not see it when I plug it in via firewire to usb, any help please.

My iMAC i7 will not see the device, it is from firewire to usb.
    Any help please.

The connection on the player is firewire
    You need the following:
    Apple Thunderbolt - Firewire adapter
4-pin to 9-pin Firewire cable like this one
    No software drivers are needed.
No icon will appear on your Mac desktop when the deck is connected.  You need to use video capture software such as iMovie, Final Cut, etc. in order to "see" and use your Firewire deck. (I believe QuickTime Player will also "see" your deck and allow playback.)   You will probably have to use the manual controls on the deck to control actual playback start & stop.
I have recently bought a cable, firewire one end and USB on the other
Hard to believe there is such a cable.  If there is such a cable, it's a scam.  Firewire and USB are totally different, electrically and protocol-wise.  Even if there is such a cable, it will not work for connecting your miniDV player to a Mac.   miniDV (video) has always been a Firewire-based connection. Sony calls Firewire "i.Link"

  • Is it OK to plug/unplug Thunderbolt cables with power on?

I know USB does not require power down first, but Thunderbolt?

If you're unplugging a drive - be it Thunderbolt, USB, FireWire 800 - be sure and unmount the drive(s) before disconnecting the Thunderbolt cable.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter?  More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0.  So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter.  Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.
    Thank you!

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.
You need a real firewire connection.

    tyler57,
it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

  • Usb 2.0 cable

Is there some technical reason why I cannot find a two-headed USB cable (flat insert at both ends)? I just want to connect the flat USB on extreme (where a printer would have plugged in) to my USB hub and can only find the A/B cables. I will check the Apple store and online, but just thought I would ask if my need is unusual.
    Thanks.

It's possible that the fact that you've got a firewire connection going from the hub to a computer could be a problem - but I'm still of the opinion that the AEBS won't be able to see the firewire drive through the USB hub. I would bet that the base station would need a firewire controller to talk to the drive - it also might be possible that since the hub you're using (where did you get it anyway? I think I want one) has both firewire and USB and that the two interfaces might not have any intersecting data pathways.
The firewire and USB portions of the hub might be completely separate OR the fact that the firewire drive is already mounted on another machine may keep it from being mounted by the access point - I'm just guessing on that point, never tried mounting a firewire drive on two different devices, and I have no idea if that would work or what would happen if you did. It also depends on whether or not the hub is capable of routing the firewire drive through the USB interface. If it is then your scenario might work if the the drive is no longer mounted on the computer, it's worth trying just to see what happens.

  • Is out there a firewire to usb adapter?

    Hello,
I am looking for a firewire to usb adapter, so I have a third usb port on my macbook pro late 2011. Does it excist?

Keep your eyes open for the Thunderbolt hubs and adapters that are starting to come out  Some of them have multiple jacks with USB 2, USB 3, Firewire, etc all sharing the Thunderbolt port.  Some even have internal disk drives and one has a Blu-ray DVD drive.  Some are kind of pricey, but gives you lots of options for connectivity.

  • Thunderbolt Cable Issue

    Hi all.
This is an informational post. I have a MacBook Air but this is probably applicable to anyone who uses Thunderbolt cables. I had purchased a Seagate Goflex Drive and a Goflex Thunderbolt adapter along with an Apple Thunderbolt Cable. Initially worked well but I suddenly had a series of problems. First the drive crapped out for some reason and would not mount with USB or FW800 so it was replaced. The Thunderbolt adapter also seemed to crap out and it was also replaced by Seagate. When I got everything back the drive worked fine with USB and FW800 adapters but the Thunderbolt adapter would still not mount the drive. That left the cable or the computer. I went to Apple store and they checked the cable and they test it with Thunderbolt monitors and told me it was probably a problem with the computer. I was skeptical and asked them if they would exchange the cable anyways. They were nice enought to do. The Thunderbolt cable is expensive and primarily because the cable contains quite a bit of electronics inside the connectors. I got the new cable home pluged it in and the drive mounted normally and everything is fine.
So this is a cautionary tail about the Thunderbolt cables you can have a problem mounting a drive and not have a problem using the same cable with a monitor.
I only worry about the cable I left behind at the store probably to be sold to someone else.
    Cheers
    P

Thank you, I was struggling with this thunderbolt, cause my macbook can't read the hard drive now, maybe the warm the end issue is the cause of this problem, apple need to fix it. I'm going to the apple store to ask for exchange another cable today. it's kinda scary, i haven't back up any of my files yet
