Firewire to usb2 adapter

Is there a Firewire device that converts to usb2 to allow faster syncing with a G4 iBook?
Lewis

I'm afraid there's not. This question gets asked frequently on the iPod forum from people with only a USB 1.1 port wanting to try and connect a recent USB enabled iPod via Firewire.

I want to transfer data from my old Mac book pro to my new one using migrate.  The old computer doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Does the Thunderbolt to Firewire or the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work to connect them and transfer data?
    Thank you!

Yes, use a Firewire cable and the FW to Tbolt adaptor.

  • Firewire to USB adapter?

I recently purchased a iMac 27 i5. Love it. But it has only USB and thunderbolt ports. My beloved Nikon 4000 film scanner only has firewire connectivity. I found a firewire to USB adapter online and purchased one. It came from China. When I plugged it into my self-powered USB hub, I got a message saying a USB device was drawing too much power and it shut down one or more other USB devices to protect the computer. I couldn't print. I realized the adapter might be the problem and when I disconnected it, my printer came back online.
Q1 -- has anybody found a firewire to USB adapter that works?
Q2 -- is there another workaround to connect firewire devices to the new iMacs?
Q3 -- is it possible to have a USB port put into the scanner hardware?

Thanks, Niel. That makes sense ... should have thought of that ... assuming that will reduce the excessive power draw?  I see Apple sells the 400-800 cable.

  • Connectiong an external thunderbolt hard drive to an older iMac via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt entry?

Is there a possibility to connect an external thunderbolt hard drive to my iMac (originally Leopard 10.5.8. upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3) via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt, but has two firewire entries?
Would like to use the hard drive's big data stocking capacity of 8TB, but actual WD-HDDs of such a capacity have no more other entries than thunderbolt.

Basically, no.  The Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter does not work "in reverse,"  meaning, you have to have a Thunderbolt port on your Mac in order to use it.
Most Thunderbolt drives that I have seen also have a USB 3 port.  You could use that, but on on an older Mac that does not have a USB 3 port you will be limited to USB 2 speeds.

  • Audio problem with firewire to thunderbolt adapter

I am running four channels of audio from a Yamaha Motif synthesizer into a new iMac using the firewire to thunderbolt adapter and recording to Logic.   I get very loud distortion.  I unplug the same cord and remove the adapter and run the same audio into my 2011 MacBook Pro and record the audio with no distortion.  I can run MIDI into the iMac using the adapter with no problem.  What gives?

The iMac has three USB and three Thunderbolt.  The Yamaha has Firewire out which carries 16 channels of audio.  It works great with my MacBook Pro, but the Thunderbolt Converter seems to mess it up.  It's fru
strating having bought a brand new iMac and not being able to use it to record.  Now when I try to record a single channel of piano, Logic starts blinking on and off, alternating with whatever window is behind it.  This is doubly frustrating.

  • Is out there a firewire to usb adapter?

    Hello,
I am looking for a firewire to usb adapter, so I have a third usb port on my macbook pro late 2011. Does it excist?

Keep your eyes open for the Thunderbolt hubs and adapters that are starting to come out  Some of them have multiple jacks with USB 2, USB 3, Firewire, etc all sharing the Thunderbolt port.  Some even have internal disk drives and one has a Blu-ray DVD drive.  Some are kind of pricey, but gives you lots of options for connectivity.

  • Firewire card or adapter for g7 1237dx

I have a G7-1237dx. Can I get a firewire card or adapter to allow me to run pro tools? Need a 6pin firewire solution.
    thanks
    Steve

If the "dual mirror" Power Mac G4 is the model immediately before the last one with FireWire 800, then it has FireWire 400. You need an cable like this one with FireWire 400 (6-pin) on one end and FireWire 800 (9-pin) on the other end
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
Will also be moving data from a Lacie d2 external hard drive to the imac
Again, it depends on the type of connector it has. If it has FireWire 400, then that same cable will work. If it has FireWire 800, the you need a regular FireWire 800 cable with a 9-pin connector at both ends.

  • Is there a firewire to HDMI adapter for IPAD 4?

Is there a firewire to HDMI adapter for IPAD 4?

It's called the "Lightning" connector. Here is the adapter you need:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter
The Lightning Digital AV Adapter mirrors exactly what you see on your device so that everyone in the room can enjoy it on your widescreen TV, video projection screen, or other HDMI-compatible display. The Lightning Digital AV Adapter also supports video out for watching movies, TV shows, and more.
You can also stream wirelessly using AirPlay but that requires Apple TV. Streaming music or other audio requires an AirPort Express or compatible device.

  • Hard Drive FireWire or USB2

    Hi !
I´m about to buy an external HD ( LaCie 80/160 GB). I would like to install a bootable partition and a backup one.
Can someone point me out the Pros and Cons of Firewire vs USB2 other than speed ?
I'm using windows with bootcamp is a Fire compatible with windows on th Mini ?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
The main difference is speed. And it is a significant difference. USB 2.0 is significantly slower than FireWire (I know I have both, and the drives are comparable otherwise).
Otherwise, there really is no point of comparison. The USB and FireWire protocols are different. But, you can sum that up as speed and efficiency.
USB has been said to require more system resources from the host computer (thus theoretically slowing down the computer as you add more USB devices). But, it's unknown to me exactly how much that penalty really is. I haven't observed USB to slow my computer noticeably. But, I can tell you that I have personally observed a 30 to 50% performance speed hit when I transfer data to my USB 2.0 drive compared to the faster performance of my FireWire 400 drive.
Besides speed and protocol, the main difference is the connector.
USB drives are not bootable from a PowerPC Mac. But, that isn't an issue since you have an Intel Mac.
Both USB and FireWire drives are compatible with Windows and Mac OS. So, that is not a problem.
Understand that Windows cannot read or write to / from Mac OS formatted partitions.
And, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS (Windows) partitions. And, in many cases it has trouble reading them as well.
Currently, the only partition format that is universally compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows is FAT32.
But, you would only want to use FAT32 for a data partition.
FAT32 partitions cannot hold a backup copy of your Mac OS X installation, and it would not be bootable on a Mac.
FAT32 partitions also cannot hold many of the PKG files that are common in on Macs (under OS X).
So, you will want to only use a FAT32 partition to hold data that is necessary to exchange between Windows and the Mac.
Now, there is a way to create both a Mac OS X and a FAT32 partition on the same drive (you can find my method for doing it in my previous messages by searching). But, I won't delve into that because it would not be bootable on your system (and that is one of the criteria that you set).
So, your best option is to format the drive as a Mac OS X drive. Create both partitions as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and then use a program on the Windows XP installation that will enable it to mount and read / write Mac OS X drives.
    One such utility is MacDrive:
    http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/
If you install MacDrive in Windows XP, then you'll be able to read and write to / from the Mac OS X partitions on your hard drive.
And, using this method, you would be able to boot from the external drive since it would still be formatted as a Mac OS volume.
So, for the criteria you provided, this would seem to be the best option.
Understand that no option you choose will permit booting from Windows on an external hard drive. So, that is why I limited discussion of booting to the Mac OS X environment. Using the Mac, you will only be able to boot from an external drive if you are booting up into Mac OS X. Windows can only be booted from the internal hard drive.
Also, be sure to change the partition / volume scheme of your external hard drive prior to partitioning it. You need to be sure to set it to the GUID scheme.
By default, the Intel Macs use Apple Partition Map for the external drives and GUID for the Internal drives. But, you will need to configure your external drive as a GUID drive if you want to be able to boot from it.
You can read more about this here:
    Disk Partitions
And, you can read about how to change these schemes here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303220
    I hope this helps.

  • USB or Firewire to MIDI adapter

Hi, Sashasdad. Lots of great adapters out there; which one is best for you depends on your circumstances.
First suggestion: I would suggest going with one that has enough ins/outs plus one or two spares. If you get more gear, you can always add on another MIDI interface and your Mac shouldn't have any trouble handling it.
Second suggestion: don't even look for a Firewire MIDI interface. You'll find audio interfaces with some MIDI ports that run on Firewire, but for straight MIDI data a USB port is going to handle a ton of I/O before it even thinks about breaking a sweat. (MIDI runs at 32 KILObits per second, while even pokey old USB 1.0 theoretically runs at 10 MEGAbits per second.)
I've used the M-Audio MIDISport interfaces (2 in; 2 out) as well as "micro lite" from Mark of The Unicorn (MoTU). Both are absolutely easy to install and use. One small benefit of the MIDISport series is that there's a switch that allows you to use the device as a 'thru' box even if the computer isn't running or processing MIDI -- this is useful when you have a controller addressing one or two modules and you don't want to turn on your computer just to play around. The MoTU Ultra Lite is a 5*5 device, and it's served perfectly well for a few years now. Because my configuration has changed, I don't miss the 'thru' feature of the MIDISport interfaces.
I would suggest checking online prices at M-Audio, Sweetwater Sound, and Musician's Friend -- then go to your local shop and expect a decent markup.
    Cheers,
    Michael
WARNING: OLD FOGEY ALERT!!: Just to show my age here, I sorely miss the Opcode Studio-4 that I used to have: 8*8, with tons of patching and processing available in the box. Couple that with a Roland A-880 MIDI patchbay (also 8*8) and you've got oodles of power. Then there was the funny little Akai ME-25S and the wildly potent Yamaha MEP-4. Yummy, yummy, yummy.
Back in the early 90s, I spent a huge amount of time with UltraMIDI and TweakIt on the wonderful Atari ST, at one point designing a pretty nifty two-player, four-controller, eight-module setup for a recital at Berklee.
For what it's worth, you can do a whole lot more with much less money using today's gear (put Cycling 74's Max onto a cheap laptop and !!!!!), but there was a certain beautiful adventurousness to those weird old devices. The MEP-4 was particularly nifty. Mine is probably still working in my brother's home studio years away and far ago. And UltraMIDI was a variant on Max -- anything could be mapped to anything else!

  • Need to transfer files using Firewire to USB3, adapter???

I have a backup from my old MBP on a portable hard drive, it uses Firewire. My new Rentina MBP has Thunderbolt and USB3. Is there an adapter that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, maybe just a half an arm I can use? I want to move the documents from the portable hard drive over to the new laptop. I am also open to going directly from the old MBP, it still runs.
My WIFI connection is very slow and the new Retina MBP does not have an ethernet port. Please keep suggestions at an easy to understand level.
    Thanks,

And if the drive is using Firewire 400, then you need a FW800 to FW 400 adapter.

You can get a new USB 3 drive which you later use as a backup drive for the new machine.
Connect it to the old machine and install the free SuperDuper version.
Use Disk Utiltiy to format the drive 1 partition, click box, option: GUID and OS X Ext J as the format, then use SuperDuper to clone your entire drive over.
Connect the USB drive to the new Mac and use Apple's Migration Assistant or simply click on the drive and Get Info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume" and begin transfering folder over.
Then later you perform #6 here to set all the user file permissions to your new user.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once you done transfering what you want, erase the drive and use it for backup. This will cost you no money as you need a backup drive anyway with the new Mac. The old drive is not compatible and likely old and can be unstable.

  • Firewire to usb2

I am looking to buy a camcorder that has a usb2 interface. In the interest of speed, is there an adapter that I can buy that I can plug this usb2 device into my firewire port on my iMac G4 flat panel?
    Mark

Well, I found a bunch of hard drive camcorders from several different brands, not just JVC, but you're right: they are all USB 2.0, not Firewire.
That just goes to show that the people making the decisions are idiots.
Just get a miniDV one. Each tape holds 11-13GB, which can be up to 90 minutes. 3 tapes will hold more data than a 30GB hard drive camcorder, and when the tapes fill up, you can swap in another one, which you can't do with a hard drive camcorder. Plus, you can get Firewire, so you won't be waiting forever and a day to download the video to your computer.

  • Firewire to usb adapter for macbook air

    Hello,
Just purchased the latest version Macbook Air.  I'd like to transfer video from a Sony video camera w/mini DV tape, into iMovie '11 on the laptop.  Trouble is, I can't use my existing firewire cable as before on the iMac desktop.  There are prior discussions on the forum about this but none current.  Have there been any new developments in the firewire adapter arena for Macbook Air?  Thx.

Sonnet Technologies is supposed to introduce a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter called the Sonnet Allegro later this month. http://www.sonnettech.com
"The Allegro™ FW800 Thunderbolt™ Adapter enables users to plug in a FireWire® 800 device, including a bus-powered drive, to any computer with a Thunderbolt port."

  • Using Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter for Apogee Duet

    My question is two-fold.
I currently run Logic Pro 9 on my mid-2011 I-Mac.  I am looking into purchasing a new apple laptop to run Logic Pro 9 on mainly for the advantage of portability.  From what I have read so far I would benefit from the processing power of a Macbook Pro over the Air.  Does anyone have input on this or experience running Logic 9 on these newer machines?
The second part of my question involves my recording audio interface -- the first generation firewire apogee Duet.  If I were to get a new generation laptop it would not come with a Firewire 800 port.  To circumvent this I would need the adapter linked below:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
The reviews indicate that it is not great for bus-powered external drives.  Would the Apogee interface be in the same boat as these?
Would I want to trust sending audio signal through and from the computer with an adapter in between?
Any input or experience with this would be awesome.  At worst, I could use a newer laptop for mixing and not tracking.  And then upgrade my audio interface to the newer generation Duet at a later time.
    Thanks!

I've been searching for such a device too. I need to perform a data transfer to MBA from a MBP and FW800 drive. For now, I can hook it up to a MBP and use AirDrop or simple wireless transfer...

The Belkin Dock looks promising, but still expensive. Simple adapters are still aways and the first ones out are going to cost a pretty penny still (~$30-$40 is my guess). The dock from Belkin may be worth the cost in that sense. Except it seems to need an external power source.
Sigh, Thunderbolt hasn't really come out with a bang, but just more of a sizzle...sorry for the pun.
Someone had come up with a concept Apple Thunderbolt Pro Display. It was pretty cool. Built-in discrete graphics card, bluray superdrive, and all the ports you would ever need (among other things). Oh how I wish Apple would be willing to build such a thing.
Anways, let me know if you find a simple TB to FW800 adapter.
