Firewire trouble, unexpected FCP quit

Hi, im having some trouble in a Macpro, PPC processor, an external video capture card is attached to the rear FW 400 port, an external HDD is using front or rear FW 400 port, the HDD works well, no problem. I try to capture using the card but when in FCP, and open the capture window, the whole program quits at once.
The video card works well in any other mac.
The external HDD is disconnected while performing this operation.
Does anyone know how to test the FW port?

connect the device to your mac. under the apple in the upper left corner of your display select "about this mac" hit the button for more info, under hardware select FireWire. if your device shows up there it is communicating with the mac.
don't think you have a macpro PPC since the macpros are intel based. likely just some confusion in terminology

HELP! FCP Quits every time certain project is opened

I capture and render all of my files to an external hard drive. I have been spending the last few months working on a few projects that I am planning to put together in the end. Anyway one of the projects opens up and loads and then unexpected error occurs and FCP quits. Now with my other projects it is not doing this. I am just a little curious as to why this might be happening. And can anyone who reads this tell me where and how they save all of their files?? I know I am in for some trouble if there is anything wrong with my external hard drive.. thanks for your response

It could be a corrupted QuickTime clip. Have you tried moving or renaming the folder containing the media? It will prompt you to reconnect the media and if it crashes then, that's the problem.

FCP quits when DV deck turned on

Dear all,
Out of the blue, my FCP has begun to quit on me repeatedly. I think I have narrowed the circumstances down to it happening once I swtich on my DV deck (Sony M15 attached by Firewire).
The FCP/deck combination has worked fine for the 4 months I have had the deck but not now! I cannot think of anything I did just before the problem started except perhaps installing a Digital Heaven Plug-ins for a Grid overlay but I have since deleted that.
If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.

But the real issue is Rosetta and why you starting a project on Intel hardware without the proper software.
If you are not much into this project, you might want to start over with the correct application version

FCP quits when exporting ref movie or self contained

This one has be pulling my hair out. When I try to export an hour long project, FCP quits about half way in. Doesn't seem to matter if it is a ref movie or self contained. I get the unexpectedly quit window. I have no idea how to fix this. It is extremely frustrating. Any ideas?

Don't use an XDCAM sequence setting. Mixing that format with ANY OTHER FORMAT causes issues. I have had 3 jobs in the last 2 weeks that were HDV and XDCAM, and when they were in their native timeline settings, with other footage and graphics mixed in, I had HORRID times exporting and outputting. The solution? Changing the sequence compressor to ProRes, and rendering again. Then the projects exported fine.
So my rule #1 when dealing with HDV or XDCAM, is to edit in a ProRes sequence...all the time. No matter what. Dealing with GOP native, when you add other things like stills or other footage, is cause for nightmare issues. That GOP format is just too whacky to deal with.

FCP - Quits when using pen tool to enter nodes in the motion tab

Hi all.
I'm encountering a persistent problem with FCP unexpectedly quitting on both version 4.5HD and version 5. The problem occurs when I open a clip from the timeline in the viewer and access the motion tab to adjust the scale of a clip or the position of a clip with the pen tool. I can enter four nodes successfully with no problems, but if I then go back to the clip or open a new one, I can enter maybe three nodes maximum before they cease to register, then the beachball appears for half a second and FCP quits with the "unexpected" message.
This problem occurs across all machines whether I'm running FCP by itself or with other applications running in the background. I am using 10.4.6 on my laptop (iBook G4 with 1GB of RAM and FCP 4.5HD), 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5HD on an eMac, 10.4.6 and FCP Studio 5.0.4 on a G4 Tower ...
Has anyone experienced a similar problem, and does anyone have any thoughts on causes/fixes for it?

FCP quits when opening project

Hi all, I have been running FCP 5.1.1 for a while now, never had a problem. Been working on an on-going project that always took a few extra seconds to read and load. Well last night I digitized about 2 more hours of video to the project, did a few edits on the timeline and saved and closed. No problems that I could see. Now today when I go to open the project, I get the "Reading Project" box, and at 43%, FCP just closes, "FCP Quit Unexpectedly". I click "try again", same thing happens. Anybody have any ideas? Is there a limit to how much a project can handle? Thanks!

this is not uncommon behaviour if and when a sorce clip becoms corrupted.
if that is the case, what you can do is disconnect the media drive and then launch FCP. it should open up fine but all the media will be offline.
now you can reconnect the media drive and relink the media, but take care in this last step, relink the media in blocks, making a mental note of which clips you are reconnecting each time ... eventually you will get the error, which tells you that it is one of those last blaock of clips that has become corrupted.
when you discover the corrupt clip you can relink all the others and recapture the corrupted one from source.

FCP quits without reason when i try to log clips

I have a brand new Mac Pro with a 2.66 Quad Core processor, 6 gb of ram, the latest OS (10.6.2) and i'm having trouble getting Final Cut Pro to work propperly. It runs very slowly every time i try to edit h.264, and when i try to log any clip, FCP quits without reason. My software is original, it is the Studio pro 2 (Final Cut Pro 6.0.6) Does anyones knows what is wrong or what could it be?

OK - it is possible that you do not have a fast enough Hard Drive Capture Scratch location to handle uncompressed capture. You may need to setup a RAID if you do not have that already. I saw that you have a Mac Pro, so you could set two or three drives up as a RAID if you want, or employ an external FW800 RAID.
If this isn't your problem, or if you already know this, than maybe you should either trash your "preferences", or look at un-checking "Abort capture on dropped frame" in the "General" tab of User Preferences.

FCP quits when making round trip to motion

When I try to make to make the round trip with one or more clips to motion(using "sendto" and with "embed" ticked on), everything seems to work fine, but when I save the motion project and quit motion FCP just quits "unexpectedly".
When I then restart FCP, I can import the saved motion project, but as soon as I try to play it in the viewer, or I drop it in the timeline, FCP quits again...
Any advice ?

The workflow for colorgrade has evolved over the last twenty or so years (in video) and over the last better part of a century in film as the final step, after everything was LOCKED. Its kind of why this application was first named "Final Touch".... well, it was sort of a clever reference to "Final Cut"... but... we know how that worked out.
It would be a bit misleading to conceptualize COLOR as a kind of really fancy 3-way, but the fact remains that as an external application, it creates all new media, independent in most ways from the original sources. We can understand that as an extension of the workflow from the days of linear tape-to-tape, when an entirely new, "Color-Correct" Master was created. Some flexibility can be built in to the return trip with the use of handles... but it can also turn into a whole other can'o'worms. Keyframed stuff can get out of sync.... etc.

FCP quits when importing pics

Doing a project with lots of yearbook pics, and about half the time FCP "unexpectedly quits" when importing these pics. They're regular jpegs, no noticeable pattern, so I now transfer pics to desktop and do it from there. Best way is to set all material in media as a few of you told me, but I'm too far into this project and it's almost done. Any ideas as to why FCP quits would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure all your jpegs are RGB and not CMYK.

Unexpected error:quitting

Hi all,
I have the error coming unexpected error:quitting when my application is logged in from standard user.But when i login from admin user it works perfectly fine.Is there something i need to change in IE9 please do let me know.This error comes when my application
is downloaded from IE9 to download program files.
1.The application is downloaded when a web url is accessed.
2.The complete error message displayed is "unexpected error:quitting".
3. Application is working fine with WindowsXP.
4.We are getting the error message when we are using our application from IE9 and Windows7.
This error is coming across all machines and is not an issue with system error/shutdown error/malware attack/corrupted files.

Regarding the first question your understanding is correct.Yes we are using compatibility view
in IE9.
See we tried downloading a basic activex dll and we were unable to download it.Yes we are in a
domain environment.Does IE9 have a problem in domain env?If yes if there is any patch for it?
As far as the user permissions are concerned we have set the UAC setting to minimum security.

Fcp quits on opening, works fine with other user account

fcp quits right after asking where my camera/deck is. it just drops back to finder, with no apology. my backup user account works like a charm.
how do i rectify this? FCP Rescue didn't do it, I'm afraid.

FCP Rescue won't work if you don't have the mail.app in your applications directory...
Do you get any errors on the Console? (/Applications/Utilities/Console)

FCP quits during MPEG2 high quality encode in compressor

I am trying to create MPEG 2 of FCP project using the 90min Hig Quality 2 pass setting. When I do, about half way through the encoding FCP quits causing the encoding to fail. The strange thing is if I drop back to fats encode 1 pass it seems to work. Am I going to lose much quality by only using the fast encode? Does anyone know how to fix the problem? Is it a compressor issue or FCP?
Any help would be great cause I don't want to compromise quality of my DVDs if I can help it.

For example, are you doing this in compressor or in DVDSP?
What is the original material?
How long is the original material?

I think you've got the right driver selected, otherwise it wouln't work at all. The single most obvious thing to ask you though (I'm sorry if this is too basic) is where you have the pan controls set to? To get each mic to record on a single channel, you'd have to have one panned hard left and the other panned hard right. If you leave them both panned dead centre, that's exactly what you get - both mics on both channels.

Unexpected Application Quits 10.4.10 Resolved!

Morning to you all,
I just wanted to thank everyone who posts on these forums with help and advice. After 2 weekends of trying to resolve a whole host of unexpected application quits since using 'software update' to upgrade to 10.4.10 I've finally got everything working and it's working great!
I resolved my problems by doing going back to my install disks, performing an 'Archive and Install' as recommended by Kappy in a number of threads(thank you) and then downloading the 10.4.10 combo and used that to upgrade instead of the 'software update' function, again there are a huge amount of posts that recommend this over using the 'software update' function and I for one will be doing it this way in future.
So, all I'll say to anyone experiencing problems with 10.4.10 is with patience and a whole lot of help from the people on here I reckon almost everything can be over come.

I also highly recommend SuperDuper! for making clones of your startup drive as a regression strategy should something go wrong with an update (or anything else you can't easily recover from). The manual is good & the procedure very simple.
However, note that a clone is not a substitute for archival backups of important data files. This is because a standard clone procedure creates an almost exact copy of your startup volume ... including any errors you have made. For example, if you accidentally delete one of your most important documents, or overwrite it with another item of the same name, when you next clone the volume, that action will be reflected in the clone -- the file will not be backed up but removed from or altered on the clone so the two volumes are identical. You now have a perfect replica of your mistake.
To guard against this, create archival copies of selected content from your Home folder -- anything you can't afford to lose. The best method will vary from user to user & depends on the size of the folders you want to back up.
