Firewire webcam recommendations?

Using a USB webcam on a G3 iBook with a slow USB 1.1 provides no good quality.
But firewire webcams on a Clamshell seem do be a little bit tricky.
I own a unibrain fire-i, a pyro webcam and a AME CF-2000 which show up on my G4 in iMovie, but refuse to work on the Clamshell iBook (both running OSX 10.4.11)
The alternative is to buy the ioexperts webcam driver for 19,95$
http://www.ioxperts.com/products/webcamx.html
But i have to buy a separate license for each camera because it is linked to the firewire ID.
First question: which Firewire webcam works on a Clamshell without expensive third-party drivers ? I havn't tried the iSight camera yet.
Second question: Do you know a freeware application that can be used with a firewire webcam for recording ?
Third question: A 466Mhz Clamshell seems to be underpowered if you want to use iChat. Perhaps an additional webcam driver for 9,95$ is required

Complex questions, bund!
First question:
If you have a Firewire DV camcorder, it should work without any additional drivers (as long as your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for the software application that you want to use with your video camera.)
System requirements can be different between apps, so you must examine each app individually.
For instance, regardless of your driver, your iMovie must be at _least version 4_ (or later): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3095 in order to use the Firewire camera as a video source for recording directly to your Mac.
Minimum system requirements of the app apply, too.
For instance, iMovie 4 has its own that your minimum system requirements http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27598 which your system must meet in order to allow this to work properly. Therefore, even if you have a fast enough processor, you cannot use a Firewire DV camcorder as your video recording source for iMovie unless you have a late enough version of the iMovie app. Conversely, even if you have a useable iMovie version, you cannot record video if your Mac does not meet all minimum requirements of http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27598
iChat has different requirements: According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772 , an iNdigo clamshell iBook has only a 366 MHz G3 processor. If that is true, although a Firewire camera may work with the iBook and some apps, this 366 MHz G3 processor does NOT meet the minimum system requirements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1771) minimum (600 MHZ G3) for OS X 10.4.11's iChat video chat *regardless of which driver you might use*.
Failure to meet these minimum system requirements may be what is causing your problem. You need to check the system requirements for every app you want to use. They are not all the same.
Second question:
I use QuickTime Pro and iMovie, neither of which is free.
This search shows many video capture apps, some free. I have tested a couple of the freeware/shareware apps with varying results, but I prefer the Apple apps that I use.
Of course, which you use will depend on your needs and the system requirements of the individual apps.
Third question:
ecamm's "iUSBCam" http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iusbcam/ can let cameras work with processors below Apple's minimum system requirement thresholds for iChat. However, as stated in the iUSBCam faq page:
... it will be slow. Try the demo to see if performance is acceptable before purchasing.
iUSBCam has no effect on apps other than iChat, so it will not help you with video recording or other functions.

Has Apple switched or did this driver some how mysteriously get added to my computer? I want to remove it if it is unnecessary. I am using one of the original iSight cameras with the latest OS X 10.4.1 on a dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC G5. Thanks for your advice on whether I should remove this driver.

You should remove the driver by following the instructions or using the utility on the linked page.

  • DVR-110 External FireWire Case Recommendation??

    Hi everyone,
I'm running a MDD G4 with an original DVR-104 DVD burner. I've bought a DVR-110 DVD Burner and want to connect via FireWire to be able to choose between the two burners when creating DVDs.
Can anyone recommend a Fire Wire DVD drive enclosure?
    Thanks for you help.

    Hi again,
I wonder if anyone can steer me in the right direction with this external dvd burner question?
I looked around online and at some electronic stores, but I'm afraid I'm stuck on the basic question; what kind of external enclosure should I be looking for? Everything I see is for hard drives with no apparent tray for loading discs.
Can someone offer any advice on the correct terminology I should be using in my search?
I have a dvr-110 superdrive that I would like to connect via firwire for external burning through iDVD.
Thanks for any and all help:)

  • Firewire hubs recommendations please...

I have 2 x LaCie Mini 250G firewire drives which I have been using with my Mini G4 by daily chaining them. I occasionally get I/O errors when the drives are under high load. I then need to do a hard reset to get the machine responding again.
I have tested without the 2nd drive connected and the problem seems to have been resolved. It appears the LaCie drives do not work well if daily chained - problem with the firewire bus <?>.
I am thinking about getting a firewire hub which I am hoping will solve the I/O error problem.
Does anyone have an experience or recommendations on which type of firewire hub to purchase?
    Thanks.

    Hello Hattori Hanzo,
Based on personal experience, and a lot of correspondance with others in the forums over the last couple of years, I would recommend a Belkin Mfg. hub. Others may work as well, but it seems that Belkin has a completely clean track record to date, of being compatable with Apple products.
Cory Cooper's suggestion seems like an elegant solution for a mini. If it were any other mfg. but Belkin, I would suggest that you stay away from combo USB/FW hubs as there have been reports of problems. But again, based on the above recommendation, and the product coming from Belkin, I'd say you've got your answer.

  • Webcam recommendations please?

I am trying to buy a webcam for my G5 tower (and also a microphone or headset.) I went into the new Apple Shop in PC World today and the guy with the Apple on his back foisted me off onto a regular PC World employee, who looked at all the webcams in the shop, before informing me that none of them said Mac compatible on the box! Like I couldn't read!
So, can someone please recommend a reasonably priced webcam and microphone that will work pretty much out of the box with a G5 tower? I already have MACAM installed.
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi-
With Leopard, you can run most any USB webcam, without additional drivers, whether the camera is "Mac" compatible, or not. My Logitech Quickcam Ultra works great in Leopard!
To work with iChat, in Tiger, the ichatUSBcam driver helped out (Skype didn't need drivers):
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/
Check out the QuickCam line from Logitech. They have some very reasonably priced, good performing products.
MacAlly also makes a Mac compatible webcam.
The following is a list of cameras that are usable on a Mac, and compatible with Skype. note, that this list is pre-leopard:

  • Webcam recommendations

Can anyone recommend a decent webcam in the $25-$50 dollar range to use with my Mac Pro?
    Thanks.

I got a Logitech Pro late last November. My experience: It works. I have been unable to control "gain" on either video or mic: results are that video is often washed out - but the mic seems okay if Sound prefs panel is used to control input.
During Skype or stand alone video recording: both require a darkened room - and! - a darkened screen to avoid over saturation and wash-out effect. My solution: turn off lights, open a dark jpeg file which fills the screen (since the camera is mounted over the screen - light from screen IS a factor).
Note: the video window and controls both "float above" the jpeg, so seeing "output" isn't a problem.
Oh, I'm only supposing that "Pro" indicates there is an iris control or some way to turn down "gain" - Logitech has done a poor job of specifying on this topic.
Footnote: actually, thinking up the idea of using a jpeg to darken the screen was fun: I also experimented with putting a few light gray dots "on" the image as well as "Red-Green-Blue" dots to balance color a little bit.
And yes, I took advantage of their rebate as well as a distributor's "on sale" pricing: Net cost was about $50. I would not have paid the original list: $99.

  • HD with FireWire 800 Recommendation/Suggestion

I'm looking for an external hard drive with FireWire 800 connectivity (ideally a Quad) to use for my Time Machine backup with MacBook Pro. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Btw, here are a few that I've have seen recently:
    1. $199.00 -- WESTERN DIGITAL MY BOOK STUDIO EDITION 500GB EXTERNAL QUAD. link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/522057-REG/WesternDigital_WDH1Q5000N_500_GB_MyBook.html

    3. $229.95 -- From FireWire Direct: 500GB/7200rpm 3.5" Ultra IVs 'QUAD' FireWire800, USBv2.0 & eSATA Professional External Hard Drive Subsystem. link: http://www.firewiredirect.com/product/581/

    I recommend the Rocstor 500GB or 750GB model 800AV...
    http://www.rocstor.com/Products/rocpro-800av.html
I love it because it has an internal power suppy (so it accepts a standard universal power cable). That's great if you ever forget your power cable at home! Easy to scrounge up a spare!
Also it comes with a great travel case. Plus it has FW 800, 400, and USB 2 ports.
This is good because if you have it hooked up on FW 800, on your MacBook Pro, you will need to connect other FW perhiperals into the drive's FW 400 port insteat of the MBP's 400 port since you can't use the 400 and 800 ports at the same time due to the bus maximum being 800 MBS.

  • Firewire Hub Recommendation?

I am in the process of moving from a PPC to a Quad core 3.0 machine. Can anyone recommend a PCIE firewire card for running the Duende or the Apogee card?
I'm looking for something with 800 and 400 ports.
I've loaded this machine up with 16gb ram and 4 drives, is there anything I need to know as far as tweaks, any specific pcie slot to install the fw card as well as a UAD2 card?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I don't know about Ensemble or Duende but my Motu works on a LeCie D2 connected to the FW800 port of my G5 without problems...
seems to be more faster... but in any case just an adapter to be sure about stay close to FW800 commectors.

  • Firewire expresscard recommendation

From earlier posts it seems users are having difficulty in finding a firewire expresscard that will work on a late 2008 - early 2009 MBP. Can someone please recommend a specific firewire 400 or 800 expresscard/34 that from personal experience they know will work on a new MBP without problems and without the need for modification of drivers, etc. I'm looking for something as close to plug and play as possible. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

    hey Henry
I too would like to know this.. seems as if nobody knows! not even apple..

  • FireWire Card Recommendation

I was wondering if anyone out there can recommend a great FireWire 800 card. I would like it to have as many FireWire 800 and USB ports as possible (without going to a hub). The last one I tried to purchase was not actually compatible with my particular system. Check out below for my system details.
    Power Mac G5
    OS X 10.5.8
    Model Year - 2003
    Much thanks!

    Hi-
Either this OWC FW800 card or this FW800 card will be an excellent choice for FW expansion.
You want to avoid combination FW/USB cards, as those are often the source of a myriad of problems.
It is best to use a second card for USB.
Any USB 2.0 PCI card with the NEC chipset will work.
One like this would be fine:
    http://www.meritline.com/5port-usb-pci-card---p-37960.aspx
(Ignore the Windows reviews, as those are all due to driver incompatibilities, or lack there of. This is of NO concern with OS X and the NEC chipset).
To be complete, please read this summary of use for USB 2.0 PCI cards:

  • Firewire Webcam driver

I have an older laptop (G4) that doesn't have the builtin camera. I need to engage in an online video conference that is using MegaMeeting. I have several Sony camcorders that I'd like to use, connecting with Firewire. The one I currently use to capture video to IMovie is the TRV950. I can connect successfully to capture, but don't have any drivers to allow video conferencing. What are my options?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, joeBOH
The fact that you can use your Sony to "capture" means that your camcorder works with OS X. You do not need other drivers.
If your only problem is with MegaMeeting®.com, you should find all the answers you need in their Help/Support page for the version you use. I do not use MegaMeeting®.com, but all their Help pages I examined say that you only need a current browser (like Safari) and the latest version of Macromedia Flash Player, which is likely already one of your Safari's plug-ins.
You probably only need to configure your Flash Settings as explained in this post:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707&#4761707
Substitute MegaMeeting®.com for Stickam and follow the instructions. For your DV Camcorder, try the "DV Video" camera setting. For the microphone setting, try "DV Audio" first. If those two do not work, you can experiment with the other possibilities.
If you like, you can test with Stickam or other Flash-based video websites before you try connecting with MegaMeeting®.com. Settings should work the same for all of them.
If you need more help that you can find in MegaMeeting®.com's Help/Support pages, contact the IT people for whoever is hosting the conference for help. Alternatively, you can use MegaMeeting®.com's Contact Info to get help directly from the people who sell and support MegaMeeting.
Before you try to conference, check your camcorders User Guide for info on how to disable your camcorder's "tape saver" and "battery saver" features to prevent unexpected shut-down when you are using the camera for conferencing rather than for recording. These features are defeated on my Sony's by removing the tape and keeping the camcorder connected to AC Power, but your may be different.
