Firewire: What's causing bus resets?
I bought a 500GB LaCie d2 Big Disk Extreme to act as a back-up device, and in the week and a half I've had it, I've managed to back-up absolutely nothing. It copies files for a while, but eventually, all activity will slow, and cease. The system freezes, and the only recourse is to either: hard reset the Powerbook by holding down the power button, or pull the Firewire cable. Either activity will usually result in data loss and a massive waste of time.
And the problem is not just when copying. I've tried repartioning and zeroing all the data on the disc and it even hangs doing that. It's gone into a freeze when trying to rebuild the directory with Disk Warrior! That's not good.
I've looked at system logs and one thing stands out like a sore thumb. Everytime the drive activity has ceased, it's because something's caused a cascade of bus resets. Look at this:
Aug 28 11:33:30 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 992 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:36:42 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 312 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:39:54 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1341 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:43:06 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 4518 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:46:18 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 3988 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:49:30 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 3069 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:51:14 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - nodeID not valid (reset bus and retry 2)
Aug 28 11:52:42 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1218 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:55:54 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1494 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 11:59:06 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 2005 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 12:02:18 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 1842 bus resets in last minute.
Aug 28 12:02:37 Powerbook kernel[0]: Bad SelfID packet 2: 0x0 != 0xffffffff!
Aug 28 12:05:30 Powerbook kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 31 built-in: 6518 bus resets in last minute.
Thousands of resets a minute, every three minutes! Why? Why? What is doing this to me? It's driving me crazy.
It could only be the HD, the Firewire cable, the OS, or my Powerbook. I could spend all day trying to narrow it down to one of the four, but if anyone can offer any help from their own experience, I'd appreciate it.
EDIT: Well, it's most likely the drive itself that's at fault, copying 100+GB to a different drive caused no problems and no resets whatsoever, so clearly it's not the computer or 10.4.2 causing trouble.
Hi,
What would cause my PoweBook G4 (OS9.2.2) to freeeze everytime I connect a FireWire (400) device.
Everything was working fine untill I recently daisychained my SmartDisk VST CD-R/W to the d2 external drive and connected that to my poerbook.
All devices mount and work fine when connected to my G5 powermac.
I have updated the Authoring Support.
Any advice out there would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

What will cause "bus error" ?
Hi all,
What will cause "Bus error (core dumped)" ?
Please give example.
Thanks.Hi,
As per "/usr/include/sys/machsig.h", some of the
reasons for SIGBUS are:
- invalid address alignment BUS_ADRALN
- non-existent physical address BUS_ADRERR
- object specific hardware error BUS_OBJERR
The BUS_ADRALN is explained in detail at:
http://access1.sun.com/cgi-bin/rinfo2html?359605.faq
Hope this helps.

I have coloured vertical lines about a quarter of the way from the left of the picture when using my apple tv 2. Anyone got any idea what is causing it. Have done a reset but still same. ATV2 is only a month old.
Just to make sure, try a different set of cables. If the problem persists, have the unit replaced by Apple.

Beside meeting with a genius bar fellow, any suggestions for troubleshooting?
Other problems:
Target mode does not working.
Can't connect via ethernet.
Can't start from the CD, it does not let me.
Safe mode did not fixed it.
Resseting PRAM did not helped.

What would cause a few things to reset?
I noticed tonight that my ring tone was changed and vibrate was turned back on in the ring setting. I didn't do it. What would cause that??
Reinstalled OS, seems to be fine now.

VXI-MXI-2 loses register values during normal operation. Causing Bus Errors.
The Setup:
I have a system with two VXI chassis and a MXI2 bus running
between them. Each VXI chassis has a
VXI-MXI-2 card in slot zero. The first
chassis has VXI cards and the second chassis has VME cards. I set registers 0xA, 0xC, 0xE, and 0x10 to
0x6100 on the first chassis’s VXI-MXI-2 card and 0x6180 on the second chassis’s
VXI-MXI-2 card.
The Problem:
This configuration runs smoothly 99% of the time. Every so often we get a hiccup and lose the
values in the 0xA, 0xC, 0xE, and 0x10 registers on the VXI-MXI-2 card in the
second chassis. The registers on that
card are set to their default values of 0x1800.
This causes a problem, because we are unable to access the VME cards in
the second chassis until the register’s values are reset properly. We have verified with a bus analyzer that our
software is not writing zeros across the VXI/MXI bus to those register. It appears as though the second VXI-MXI-2
card is seeing a hard reset. The first
chassis is definitely not experiencing a hard reset.
Attempted fixes that have not worked:
1) We put back the register values back into place whenever
we detect that the MXI2 registers have been reset. We poll the registers at 1Hz. While this fix is semi-adequate, there are
times that we access the registers in the second chassis more frequent than
1Hz.
2) We have tried swapping out our second VXI-MXI-2 card with
a new card, but the problem persists.
3) We have also swapped out the second VXI chassis with a
new chassis, and that did not work.
My questions:
What could be causing this problem? Has anyone else seen this problem? What would cause the values in the VXI-MXI-2
card to reset to zeros besides a hard reset?
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your input,
Mike ArthurHi Mike,
We currently have a support request open on this issue, and we are working on it.
Thank you!

I'm backing up to a Lacie 1TB drive. It hangs up every few minutes, then continues. I think this started when I canceled a few backups because I didn't set up the right folders. I think I will need to reinstall the SilverKeeper software I use. Anyway, here's the console errors which show up when it hangs up:
6/22/09 9:40:17 PM kernel FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 823f built-in: 55 bus resets in last 3 minute.
6/22/09 9:40:17 PM kernel FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 823f built-in: 55 bus resets in last 3 minute.
6/22/09 9:43:29 PM kernel FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 823f built-in: 63 bus resets in last 3 minute.
6/22/09 9:43:29 PM kernel FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 823f built-in: 63 bus resets in last 3 minute.
Any clue what this could mean?Does SilverKeeper support 10.5.7?
They indicate that their support is up to the "current" version 10.5.5, so it's not very new.

I would consider better backup software than SilverKeeper.
I use CCC but SuperDuper! is also very good.
You might also consider using the built-in TM. -
I am using My iPad with Apple TV, Airplay and projector in my classroom. The projector screens blanks out and back on several times during a presentation. It seems like a problem with connection but I'm not sure as it comes back on after a few seconds. Any idea of what is causing this and how it can fixed?
Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.
Cheers, Tom -
I have tried reinstalling ITunes and resetting my IPod Touch. The computer recognizes the IPod Touch as a connected device, but ITunes doesn't. However, ITunes will recognize other devices that I plug in with the same usb cord. ITunes diagonistics only says that no device is plugged in whenever the IPod Touch is plugged in. What can cause this combination of problems, and how could I get around it?
If you have iTunes 11 on the computer and are using the same cable that works with the iPhone then:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
- Try on another computer
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware preoblem

Headphone jack not working on new Macbook Pro what is causing this?
My 17 inch Macbook Pro is less than two weeks old. The headphone jack does not recognize the headphones about half the time. This occurs with several pairs of headphones and yes, they are ther right size. This is really frustrating on a brand new 3500 dollar machine. What is causing this? It almost seems as if the headphones cannot make contact due to the fact that the connection is too far recessed. I don't live near an Apple store so dealing with this is going to be a P.I.T.A. Anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this issue? Thanks!
Hi, and thanks for your reply. I didn't have a red light emitting from the jack. I had already checked in the sound preferences to make sure the settings were correct. The headphones were not being recognized. This was not working with several differing sets of headphones. I made a phone appt. with Applecare. The laptop PRAM was reset and it works. There is still a bit of a delay when I plug in the headphones before they are recognized and I do feel the port is just a bit "off" as the no headphones plug all the way in. They seem to just sit almost flush but, not quite. However, resetting it resolved the issue to a satifactory level. Applecare said the issue was that not enough power was getting to that function on my laptop. They gave me the case number and I can use it if I have any further problem when I take the laptop in with me to any Apple service center. I was quite satisfied with how this was handled by Apple and if I have anymore issues will follow up.
I love this laptop but, even though this is working now I do feel that port is somewhat recessed a bit much.
I also want to add that this is my first Mac and despite having had this issue I was extremely impressed with the Applecare call that I got to help resolve this. One of the reasons I went with a Mac was the reputation for service Apple has. I was fed up with Sony to the hilt. I was glad I went with this Mac despite the headphone issue because had I still been with Sony, I'd have been give a major run around to deal with this issue. So far, Apple has tried everything possible to help me with this and assured me should I have any further issue they will immediately resolve it or give me a new machine. WAY better than dealing with Sony! I do not regret going with this MAC headphone issue or not! -
I have recently got a new replacement iPhone 4. Since I got this I have found that my data allowance is getting used up during the night while my phone is charging on the bedside table. How an I find out what is causing this and stop it happening? Some nights the usage is 150 meg!
You can not access the backup directly.
Did you restore your replacement from this backup?
If so then you already have everything in the backup on your device.
If not, you can wipe the device and restore from this backup:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
What is it you are worried about losing that isn't already on your current device? -
What's causing this plugin process crashing?
I'm getting the following at least once a day. Something is crashing, but it's not taking down Safari or the system. Can anyone determine what's causing it? This particular report seems related to Safari, at least that was the open application in the foreground. However it's happened at other times as well so it may not be Safari specific.

FireWire Device: unknown_device, UnknownThe sample looks way too dark ( gray snow, gray/blue sky ). You're probably in good shape while in ProPhoto 16bit RGB, but I believe you're clipping the image...especially for web. Try saving a copy of the original and, instead of converting to Adobe RGB / Relative Colorimetric, keep both images in ProPhoto / Perceptual. So, you now have two files: 1.) 300ppi, and 1.) 72ppi...one for print, one for web. But, the difference is they are both still 16bit from the original RAW file. Now, for the print version, convert to Adobe RGB / 8bit / 300ppi. For the web version, size it to whatever you need for display at 100% no scaling, no additional compression, no more resizing. Convert the web version to sRGB / 8bit / .jpg @ 4 ( no need to save at a higher compression ). By keeping the rendering in "Perceptual", you may retain more gamut than an Adobe RGB / Relative Colorimetric. Try a generic test on one of your "problem" images and see if there is an improvement. Some of the other posts regarding your monitor may be another issue ( banding, splotches, etc. ).

I have a strange problem. When I put my iphone 4S into my pocket (pants or coat) and move it around, the phone makes a beep noise/tone. I can't figure out what is causing the noise. It doesn't sound like any of my regular applications. Maybe it is the lock noise but I can't tell for sure. More movement makes more beeps. Even walking with my phone in my pocket creates beeps. The IOS is 7.0.4 (11B554a). Anyone else have this crazy problem?

What would cause this battery problem?
There is a macbook air I am considering buying if the price is right and it is said to have this problem "The internal battery says that it is charging but when the AC power adapter is unplugged the unit shuts down and will not power back on until the AC power adapter is plugged back in." Any idea what would cause this to happen? Thanks!
Hi Ty,
It could be a couple of different things, the first assumption is that it's the battery. If you go to System Profiler and go under the power menu selection does it recognize the battery? What are the statistics on that battery?
It's also possible that the cable which connects the battery to the logic board is the point of failure. Due to the way that the MBA is manufacturer you'll be unable to proceed with "troubleshooting" this and the machine will require service.
You can however, try resetting the SMC and see if that changes anything.

From your post I understand that your iPod is displaying lines on its screen. To troubleshoot this issue I'd like you to first reset the iPod:
