Fireworks CS5 Resizes Window on Startup

Hello,
Everytime I start Fireworks CS5 on Windows 7, it resizes the application window making it smaller. It reduces the horizontal and vertical size. Is there any way to prevent it from doing this. This is very annoying. It does not appear that the other applications in the CS5 Suite have this problem. The other applications that I have used (Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator) maintain their position and size between sessions.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Dan

I reproduced the behavior and got it to stop - with a penalty
This has been devilling me for a couple of years in Fw CS4 and now Fw CS5.  I don't have a definitive answer yet, but I did get Fw to open without resizing on startup again.
Problem Started for Me When
I have several custom panels I developed in Flash.  After installing my SWF files and activating them in Fw, I get the resizing behavior.  Grrrrrr.
I Tried These to No Avail
I have found precious few references to this issue anywhere on the web.  Here's what I could find and tried.
Sized the window, created a new layout as Linda recommended.  No joy.  This only seems to control the size and location of active panels and toolbars
Deactivating my panels doesn't stop the behavior.
Deleting only my panels from the Fw folders (both Program Files & %Appdata) doesn't stop the behavior.
So Far This Has Stopped the Behavior
I deleted all Fw Panels (but kept the Command Panels folder) from both:
Program Files (x86) > Adobe > Adobe Fireworks CS#.# > Configuration > Command Panels
Users > Username > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Fireworks CS#.# > Command Panels
I restarted Fw, sized it like I wanted and restarted.  So far, so good.
I Put Back The Panels Shipped
The Command Panels shipped with CS5 don't seem to create the behavior.
Fixing My Panels
I'm going to run some research and experiments with how I export the custom panel movies out of Flash to try to remove the behavior.  If anyone has any tips I'd love to hear about it.
I'll repost what I find.  It may be a few days.
Cheers!

  • Fireworks CS5 crashes often due to buggy memory handling. Will there be a patch?

Fireworks CS5 has a major bug that causes a memory leak or memory "cap" where the application stops functioning once it has used approximately 1.5 GB of memory or so. (I read that 2GB was the cap, but I have never seen Fireworks make it to 2GB).  I only have 10 undos set in Fireworks, so I know that's not the problem. I have searched high and low to resolve this, but it seems like Adobe just hasn't recognized this as a high priority.
I read other discussions about the same problem and I now believe that Adobe either doesn't read the forums or they don't care. I hope this is not the case because I truly love the product. But, for the record, I shouldn't have to:
    - "Limit the number of undos to less than 100" (I have limited mine to 10, but after 6 months of trial and error I have found that to be irrelevant. The errors occur anyway). Don't encumber your users with such an archaic request. This is like a software bug from 1985.
    - "Save, shut down, and restart Fireworks every hour or so". Are you kidding? I can't believe someone on the forums even suggested this. This isn't a solution to the Fireworks bug. This is a work around that does nothing to prevent the error from occuring. Sometimes the error occurs on the very first click after opening a file in Fireworks, after a full system restart. A 5MB file takes 3 minutes to open in Fireworks on my quad-core 3Ghz machine with 8GB of memory. I don't mind that, but I shouldn't have to do it every 30 to 60 minutes. Users shouldn't have to look for "workarounds" to keep a software application running without crashing, especially such an expensive application. I think Fireworks is worth every penny, but only if it runs without crashing.
Perhaps most importantly, I cannot - ever - open two 5MB files in Fireworks at one time. Which makes it extremely cumbersome to impossible to copy/paste content between two files. In fact, I am designing a web application in Fireworks, and I've had to split the app into approximately 15 different files because Fireworks can't handle files bigger than 6 or 7MB.
I had the same problem with CS4 on a different machine, so I know it's not a new issue.  I have Fireworks installed on two PCs, both have quad core 3Ghz processors, one PC has 6GB of RAM, the other has 8GB. Once an hour I have to shut down what I'm working on and wait several minutes for Fireworks to reopen the file.  Sometimes Fireworks just stops responding and won't let me save my work at all. And since there is no autosave in Fireworks, I probably lose work at least once a day.
Please, please, please address this... I love Fireworks, and I'd really like to keep using it.

I am using Fireworks CS5 in Windows 7 to sketch a large site, and it was taking an extremely long time to do anything and seemed to crash on me once or twice every hour. I saved every couple of minutes and could at least rely on my last save being able to be reloaded. However, a few days ago, I lost a lot of work when Fireworks crashed halfway through the save and destroyed the file. At the time, my most recent backup copy that I had on another drive was a day old, so that crash was not only frustrating but hazardous to my project deadlines (needless to say, I've since implemented a more aggressive backup policy). Anyway, I searched for answers and forums about the problem, and I'm disappointed that it seems that it's a common problem for a lot of folks that has been around for a very long time throughout multiple releases of the software. Memory and resources also seem to be a common factor in contributing to the crashes and are also a theme in the few solution responses that I was able to find. I hope that Adobe will respond with a once-and-for-all fix / a much more efficient and stable way for Fireworks to do its magic. I typically have had very positive things to say about Adobe software and was even the one who recommended the suite for my work, but especially as "well seasoned" and *expensive* as the software is, there is no excuse for any major, well-tested component of it by now to be crashing so consistenly and causing so many problems for so many people.
The solution to the crashing that seems to work for me so far - and I hope that it works for you as well: I doubled the size of my swap/paging file to ~4GB and set the maximum to double that (~8GB). Since I did that, Fireworks has only crashed once (only once.. as if that is even acceptable considering the short time since then). It still runs fairly slowly (granted, I'm working on a large project, so I can tolerate that more), but at least I can use it again.
    Hope that helps! Best,

  • Why does Fireworks CS5 keep resizing images when I paste them?

I am having a problem in Fireworks CS5 where images that are copied and then pasted into a new document automatically re-size and become either very tiny or very large.
I have taken some screenshots to show this more clearly: (this website only allows me to upload images of 450 pixels across so they are not too clear)
Image 1: I have taken a large image and reduced its size to 100x100 pixels (highlighted in red).
Image 2: I have created a new document which is 100x100 pixels in size.
Image 3: I have copied the image from Image 1 (control + C) and then pasted it into Image 2 (control + V). The image was 100x100 and the new image was 100x100 yet when I paste the image it suddenly becomes 313x313 in size and is too large for the new image. Sometimes it becomes tiny when pasted and is too small for the document.
Can anyone help with this matter? Perhaps I am missing something obvious, but I have tried searching for solutions and tried a range of methods (different kinds of copy and paste etc), but nothing seems to help. Please let me know what I am missing!
Thank you for your help! As I said I am using Fireworks CS5. I am using Windows 7. If there is anything else you want to know just let me know.

I don't know what could be causing the copy/paste resizing issue, but here are a couple of ideas that may help with your workflow:
You can create a new document for animation by choosing File > Open..., selecting multiple images, and clicking the "Open as Animation" option. This will place each image file into its own State.
Consider using commands from the States panel fly-out menu—e.g., Duplicate State, Copy to States, etc.—to move objects from one state to another.
Other commands to copy objects within Fireworks include Edit > Duplicate and Edit > Clone. These do not involve the clipboard and may sidestep the resizing problem.
Sometimes with bitmaps, I like to convert them to symbols, as it allows me to resize the bitmap freely without losing the original resolution. (This might introduce extra steps, but it could allow you to correct the image size after it's been pasted incorrectly.)
It's a longshot, but I wonder if it would help to empty the clipboard contents once in a while, to clear out old data.

  • Having the same text resize bugs in Fireworks CS5

Yes, that's right, the same terrible resizing bugs, that I have complained about directly to Adobe MULTIPLE times have not been fixed.
Now we are told there is no patch coming to windows for CS4. Problem still happening. And its not just me.
So now I downloaded CS5 and HAD THE SAME ISSUES!
    Seriously Adobe, sort yourselves out.
At my blog here, you can see it well documented. Literally the same issue I have occasionally with CS4. UNBELIEVABLY.
    http://allaboutchris.co.uk/blog/2010/bugs-in-fireworks-cs5/
Adobe, when is it getting fixed?

I don't have any problem resizing the text with the Scale tool as long as I hold down the Control or shift key while pulling at a corner with the double arrow cursor. If you pull vertically or horizontally you get just the kind of distortion I'd expect. That's not a bug.

  • Fireworks CS5 "automatically" resizes images to minuscule dimensions

I am having an odd issue in working with Fireworks PNGs from one of my subject matter experts. We have been using Fireworks since around 2000 so it's nothing new to us and it's been used in tens of thousands of images (we deliver eLearning to 70,000 people per year in 130 countries). We have 10 users and have been using it over a series of Windows machines over the years.
We use CS5 with Flash, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks and typically it all runs very smoothly. But a few months ago I would open one of her PNGs (layered, etc) and whether I made any changes or not when I re-open it it has been resampled to very small dimensions. For example, a 600 by 400 pixel image will display as 16 by 15 pixels.
This would happen with any of her images on several machines at work (*** CS5) and my home machine (CS5.5).
We had IT remove and then reinstall Fireworks CS5 on her machine and all was fine for two months. Now this weird thing is happening again. It must be some local configuration file that is getting altered. I am at my wit's end trying to solve this and the only workaround I have is to open her files in Photoshop which works fine (but is not ideal since only two MMDs have PS and we need to edit callouts done in Fireworks).
To recap - I open one of her images, close it, and reopen it and it resamples to very small and unsuable dimensions.
Has anyone ever seen this odd behavior?
Is there a config file I can delete and let the system rebuild? (I remember some flash issue, years ago, that was fixed like that).
    Thanks!

Excellent questions! Thanks for your left-field ideas - this is a left-field issue!
They seem to resize when closed but even if they are simply opened and closed without any changes and thus without actually saving. They do seem to always go down to the same size (not in proportion) and would be too small even as thumbnails (that was a good thought though).
It may be indirectly due to Fireworks and be some combination of the operating system and/or other applications she may have installed such as Snag-It because a full uninstallation and installation of Fireworks takes care of the issue. It has happened twice and here's hoping it does not happen again.
Saving the files as new files does not seem to help - she'll take her screenshots, paste them into Fireworks and then save the file to a remote server. I can open them from the server or take a copy locally, both result in the miniscule image after closing them. But only with her files. We have images from four other SMEs that don't do this "thing".
If it happens again, I will more carefully observe the particulars you asked about.
Thank you for your time and food for thought - I like left-field ideas - that's how we create new things in this world! =)

  • Problems with Fireworks CS3 in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro from Windows XP Pro. My Fireworks CS3 is having a problem. I cannot select items in the left side menu bar if I minimize or move the Fireworks CS3 window. If I have just opened the window it works, but minimize the window or move it and the toolbar stops working.
This problem is not unique to my machine. 2 other people are having the exact same problem. Here is the link to the Windows 7 forum:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/software/26957-adobe-fireworks-cs3-issue.html
We sure could use some help. This is one of my bread and butter programs.

I'm happy to hear you have other work-around alternatives!
Businesses with mission-critical software usually are very careful to research that their software will run on any proposed new system or that alternative software is available. This is the main reason that Microsoft had to continue supporting XP longer than they intended. Too much business-critical software ran on XP but did not run under Vista and would take some time before it would be upgraded to do so...if at all.
If you have "bread and butter" apps, then it was your responsibility to make sure that you could run them once you upgraded. Adobe's software worked more or less as advertised for the operating systems that were available at the time the versions were released. That's reasonable. Expecting indefinite support into the future is not.
Fireworks isn't a $2000 product. Adobe continues product development, yes. They've moved on to CS4 and its patches. You can upgrade to FW CS4 for about $150. The system requirements for FW CS4 do not include Windows 7; note that Fireworks is only certified for 32-bit operating systems:
    http://store.adobe.com/store/en_us/popup/software/fireworks4/systemreqs.html
However, there's a statement about CS4 applications (in general) working with Windows 7:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/fireworks/faq/?anonymous_element_1=4
And you'd want to get the recent updater:

... It is probably not a huge problem to fix for an Adobe engineer.
If the feature worked under Vista but does not work under Windows 7, then that means that the problem probably lies somewhere in how the program communicates with the OS. The problem is not isolated to the tens - possibly hundreds - of thousands of lines of Fireworks code, but in how that code interacts with the Windows 7 APIs. To solve this problem is not the work of "an Adobe engineer." It's the work of a project team. It's the work of a project team which would have to be pulled off development of Fireworks CS5 for a few months to resurrect the old CS3 code, get familiar with it, and try to track down and solve the problem, then package up, test, and release a patch . By pulling resources off CS5 development, CS5 would be delayed or quality inversely impacted. Since CS3 is not a current product for sale, I can't see Adobe making this investment. There's no return on it, where there would be a return on getting a quality FW CS5 out the door on time.

  • Why has my Fireworks CS5 started freezing up on start-up?

I'm using Mac OSX 10.7.5, and the most recent update to CS5 (just downloaded that update again today and installed).  Back in August, I was editing some photo files in Fireworks. I had a lot of files open (like, maybe 40 or 50) and didn't think to close the files before shutting down my computer.  Ever since, when I try to open Fireworks, this is what happens:
The application starts to open like normal.  It begins opening the picture files I was last working on in August.  After a couple minutes, it seems to be finished but when I move the cursor over the window, I get the spinning wheel... and after ten, twenty, thirty minutes, the wheel is still spinning.  I can't do anything at all except use the "Force quit" menu to get out of it.
I found a suggestion about deleting Macromedia Library files, but I don't have any files in the Library that are Macromedia.  Another suggestion had to do with changing a couple file names by putting "Old" in front of "Fireworks" in the file name in the Library and Application support.  I did that, but it didn't help.
Any suggestions?  I can't afford to just buy the latest Creative Suite.

Did you follow these steps, and removed BOTH the preferences and library folders?
    Quit Fireworks.
In the Finder, navigate to /Users/Your User Name/Library/Application Support/Adobe.
Rename the Fireworks application support folder:
Fireworks CS5.1: Rename the Fireworks CS5.1 folder to Old Fireworks CS5.1, for example.
Fireworks CS5: Rename the Fireworks CS5 folder to Old Fireworks CS5, for example.
    Navigate to /Users/Your User Name/Library/Preferences.
    Rename the Fireworks preferences folder:
Fireworks CS5.1: Rename the Adobe Fireworks CS5.1 folder to Old Adobe Fireworks CS5.1, for example.
Fireworks CS5: Rename the Adobe Fireworks CS5 folder to Old Adobe Fireworks CS5, for example.
PS Since CS is very expensive, why not switch to Pixelmator, Acorn, or Photoline for your editing? Fireworks is no longer developed anyway (since May 2013). Especially Photoline is incredibly powerful for image editing (comparable to Photoshop).

  • Fireworks CS5 will not recognize suitcase fusion font

    Window 7 Ultimate / 64 bit / Fireworks CS5 with lattestr update / Suitcase Fusion 14.2.0.319
I am working on a graphic which requires Helvitica Neue which I have on my machine as a postscript font. I activate the font in Suitcase Fusion, but when I attempt to set text in Fireworks in Helvitica Neue it always goes back to Myriad which is the default font. Is there a fix for this? I can fall back and create the graphic in illustrator if necessary which recognizes all of fonts activated in Suitcase.
    Thanks,
    Joe

Looking at a Quick Reference PDF for Suitcase Fusion 3, they call this feature Global Auto-Activation, and it's available in Preferences (this is where you can enable global auto-activation by application). However, it appears to be a feature for the Mac OS but not for Windows. Also, thinking about it, this is referring to "auto-activation", which is a bit different from what you're describing.
I like my suggestion to clean the application font caches; I really think that might help. If that has no effect, then I'd try cleaning the system font caches first, and then the application font caches. Just be aware that cleaning the system font caches may affect the activation statuses of fonts that reside in your system's font folders. (For instance, on a Mac, all the fonts in the Library, user Library, and System get activated following a cache cleaning. Fonts outside these system folders are unaffected.) So you might want to make some notes on this before cleaning the system cache.
If this continues to be a problem, Extensis has pretty good email-based customer service/tech support.

I have been using Imageready for years, and now trying to

be here a lot to ask questions...
My first one is: Is there an option to automatically resize

In Photoshop you can set it in the preferences: General
--> Zoom Resizes Windows, but haven't found the equivalent in
Fireworks. I'd like to organize a number of pictures on the screen
so that I can make decisions where they go on a webpage...

On PC's, document windows don't resize in any program unless
    you resize
them manually. If they behave that way on Macs, that's a new

I'm not sure what you mean by images behind it. If you mean

  • Issue with Fireworks CS5 on Mac OSX 10.9 Mavircks - worked before?

Tried to launch my copy of Fireworks CS5 today and it kept crashing? It had worked before, but now.. no.  I deleted the app and tried to reinstal.  Recently migrated from MacBook Pro running Mavricks and had this installed prior.  Migrated to iMac with Mavricks.. now wont launch.  Thought it was a serial number issue.  Clearly not.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Please try to change "everyone" user permissions on a share folder to modify to see if the issue still exists.
