Fireworks Help

I recently purchased Studio 8 and I am working with the
Dreamweaver interface. I have the lynda.com HOT book and "The
Missing Manual." Both are pretty good. I have taken Web Design in
college and worked with Photoshop and Go Live. What would you
recommend for learning Fireworks?
Thanks

There are many resources out there for learning about
Fireworks. But as
Joe said, you need to work with it to get proficient. Linda
Rathgeber-Stewart's e-books are excellent resources, as are
this list of
web sites:

(free,
subscription and one-off purchased content)

This is not an exhaustive list, but it will get you started.

  • Fireworks Help | What's new in CS6

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/fireworks/using/whats-new-cs6.html

Seems like a fair question. It has been over half a year since CS6 was released; it sure would be nice if Adobe would issue a new Extending Fireworks PDF for this version (or at least update the online resource).
My scripting skills are a little rusty at the moment; I can't seem to get this method to work either. I assume that both fw.appTexturesDir() and fw.reloadTextures() were designed to make it easier to add or create new textures via script, and that fw.reloadTextures simply refreshes the list that appears in the Properties panel, allowing a user to select a new texture if one has been added into the Textures directory via a command.
I think you can compare it to a method like fw.reloadCommonLibrary() and assume that no argument is needed.

  • Batch Process for creating button sets in Fireworks - help

    Hi,
I'm new to Fireworks still, I've created some really simple
buttons and I was wondering if it's possible to do a batch process
on them to repeat a few steps e.g. changing background colour,
border colour, text colour etc... It would save me lots of time and
I could make some extra sets then.
    Thanks,

  • New to fireworks - Help!

    Hi,
My first post so i apologise in advance if this question has been  covered in advance. I have made a basic website in fireworks which i  then exported to dreamweaver, you can see it here... Test-Page.  The problem is when I start entering text in the main text box it moves  all the navigation on the left and messes the whole layout up. How can I  get the page to sort of stretch to the amount of content I have in the  main text box if that makes sense? Any help is appreciated, its driving  me crazy at the moment. I can upload the fireworks file if needed.
    Thans for your help,

  • Inputing a Flash swf in Fireworks Help

I am new at the process of  importing flash into FW. I am running into a problem of inputing a FL  (swf) movie into FW. Can anyone assist me in this?
I am not to  trying to do anything great, just place a created FL movie into a box  within my FW workspace. Everytime i drag and drop or inport the swf  file, it does not work.

    Hi,
You can make animated gifs in fireworks, but not import SWF files to then render as animations.
GIFs can be imported, just not SWFs.
Best part to design your site in fireworks, leave a space for the SWF, then render SWF from flash, and place it on your webpage when ready.
Go into flash publish settings and select the checkbox for .gif file rendering. After rendered try inporting that .gif file into fireworks. Might work like you want.

I am new to Fireworks. I am using Fireworks CS5. I need help with creating navigation bars and menu. Any tutorial or tips is greatly appreciated.

    I haven't used fireworks in a long while, and I can't figure

Ah. Sure...the term in Fireworks is texture. Search your
Fireworks help file for "texture." There should be an entry on
adding a custom texture. For CS3, the instructions are
    quote:
    Adding a custom texture
You can use bitmap files from Fireworks and other
applications as textures. You can apply textures from files with
these formats: PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, and PICT (Macintosh
    only).
When you add a new texture, its name appears in the Texture
    Name pop-up menu.
To create a new texture from an external file:
    1. With vector object properties displayed in the Property
inspector, select Other from either of the Texture Name pop-up
    menus.
    2. Navigate to the bitmap file you want to use as the new
    texture, and click Open.
The new texture is added to the Texture Name list in
    alphabetical order.
    Help Resource Center
    This
    page on the Web
To get the menu, you need to have a vector object selected.
If you don't have one, just make a rectangle and go from there. You
won't be able to fill your canvas, you'll have to make a vector
rectangle the size of your canvas to fill, anyway.
Hope that helps! (Oh...the link goes to the same info, for
CS3. If you have a different version, you should be able to link
from there to the same info for your version.)

Have you reviewed the Fireworks help files on the subject?
    In a nutshell:
    • Export the slideshow to a specific folder (your site's
    local root
folder or a sub folder within it.
From there, you can access the generated html page(s) from
    within
    Dreamweaver.
If this is not the issue, you will need to be more specific
    on the
    problems you are experiencing.

  • Fireworks Limitations for Photoshop Users

This little bit of reading might be of interest to those more accustomed to the interactivity that used to exist between Photoshop and Image Ready.  This comes directly from the Fireworks manual.
Individual layer masks convert to Fireworks object masks. Group masks are unsupported.
Clipping masks convert to object masks, but their appearance changes slightly. To maintain appearance but lose editability, select the Clipping Masks preference.
Blending modes for layers convert to blending modes for Fireworks objects, if corresponding modes exist.
Layer effects are retained by default. If you prefer to convert these effects to corresponding Live Filters, select the Layer Effects preference. Note, however, that similar effects and filters might differ slightly in appearance.
The first alpha channel in the Channels palette converts to transparent areas in the Fireworks image. Fireworks does not support additional Photoshop alpha channels.
All Photoshop color depths and modes convert to 8-bit RGB.
    Adjustment layers are unsupported.
The help manual should have made clarifications.  Especially if your were forced to use Fireworks.  I speak to those having used a Photoshop to Image Ready workflow for all those glorious years when a task was easier.
    1.  Say good bye to your Group Masks.  Object masks are not as powerful, or useful, as layer masks are in Photoshop.
    2.  The appearances of clipping masks change drastically.  Do not even attempt to use an image if you have a clipping image
and expect it to be exported for use as a web graphic.  Fireworks muddles the final image with blurry edges.
    3.  In any case where your Photoshop image uses blending modes expect that Fireworks will not have the corresponding mode.
Do expect the results to be not as clear as in the original image.
    4.  Layer effects ARE NOT retained, they are MERGED into the layer.  Open a Photoshop created image using layer effects (drop
shadow, stroke, etc.).  Your effects have become merged into the latter.  Never, never save your PSD or TIF file from within Fireworks.
You will lose all editability, FOREVER!
    5.  Fireworks Live Filters are a sorry, sorry instance of the powerful layer effects of Photoshop.  Each and every instance tried to date has
shown Fireworks' iteration of filters to be different from those in use in Photoshop.
    6.  If you use your own patterns in Photoshop say good-bye to them.  Fireworks gives you no way to use your own.  Only a limited
subset of those pre-packaged with Photoshop.
    6.  Since Fireworks does not support adjustment layers, masks, paths, etc., then what happened to cross program support and
         interactivity which Adobe praises?
Why in tarnation does Fireworks support metadata in a web graphic?  Yes, the PNG file format allows for this.  Export a TIF or PSD containing metadata information from Photoshop to a PNG file.  Look at the file in Bridge.  It has no information.  If you do export a set of images using a batch operation you will find that some of the new PNG files cannot contain metadata.
View the generated PNGs in Bridge.  Apply a metadata template.  You will find that some of the files will not accept the template.  You will have to individually re-export the image.  The reason I mention this normal Photoshop to Bridge workflow is because Fireworks' Help is touting it without explaining that not in all cases does it work.
If you are coming over from Macromedia then you are used to a what was once an extremely good program.  Say good-bye to it.  If you were used to Image Ready — Good Luck!  At least it never crashed for no reason.  If you are new to Adobe then expect limited 60 day support and a company looking only at your bank account.
Adobe needs to go ahead and kill this app and include its best features into Photoshop as they have done in the past.  Then get back to allowing prototyping in Photoshop and web graphic generation as an export feature as it once was!  I don't need two prototyping programs.  What I do need is a simple, easy method of getting my Photoshop designs to the web.

Yes, Linda Nicholls is right. You will find FW better than PS.
I also use FW only for anytype of graphics.

  • Animation runs jerky, want smooth playback. Help!

I am still new to Fireworks and I'm building a website using

Could anyone tell me how to tweek it so that the text float

many times but couldn't find a topic dealing with this issue.

  • CS4 Help -- just online now?

I bought Adobe Web CS4 recently.  Previously, I used Studio 8.  I miss the Help database that was IN the program itself.  Now, when I click Help, it takes me to the web and I mostly find tutorials.  I liked the help within the program so much better.  It was simpler to follow, I could search by Index or Search or whatever.  It seems like laziness on Adobe's part.  Anyone know if they will be coming back out with this or maybe I'm missing something and it is still there?
    Thanks much!

You still have the option of downloading the .pdf version of the Help File from the Community site.
From here (http://www.adobe.com/support/fireworks/?trackingid=DYNQA) click the Fireworks Help graphic.
This will take you to the online Help. Then to the top/upper left there is a link to a downloadable .pdf version which you can store locally and reference offline.

  • Viewing Help files ???

    Can anyone help?
When I view the Helpfiles within Fireworks 8, the font is so

I tried looking on the menu, but there is nothing there.
I then tried the CTRL+middle mouse key to increase the font

So, now I'm stuck, as I cannot read anything.
Please anyone, can you shed some light on this peculiar

  • Open and edit animated .gif while preserving frame timing

CS4 Premium Design Edition, Win XP
I was disappointed with the removal of Image Ready from CS3 because although some of the functionality was placed into Photoshop 10, there was no way to open and edit an existing animated .gif while preserving the timing of each individual frame. I was told on the PS forum at the time that I really needed to use Fireworks. I resented that, because I was very happy with Image Ready and I didn't want to have to learn a new application just to gain functionality that had been included in previous versions of PS/IM.
I've now got CS4 Premium Design Edition which of course includs Fireworks... and here's what Help has to say on the subject of imported .gifs.
"Note: When you import an animated GIF, the state delay setting defaults to 0.07 seconds. If necessary, use the States panel to restore the original timing."
This is no use to me. What if I don't know the individual frame timings? What if there are 200 frames with varying timings?
Simple question: which current Adobe product is capable of importing a .gif while retaining the frame timings? If anyone knows, or if I've misunderstood the nature of the Fireworks Help quote above, I'd really appreciate some input here. Thanks :)
Not so simple question: why was an excellent gif-editing application thrown out to have its functionality partially replaced by a bunch of scripts and half-effective workarounds cooked up by desperate users ("import a gif by using the video import and typing *.* into the filename box..")? It's a fair question I think.
    Mark

Hi Bob, that's not glib at all, it's a reasonable question.
I uninstalled it along with everything else when I installed CS3, in the reasonable expectation that whatever replaced IR would be at least equal in functionality.
Perhaps I should just dig out CS2 and install IM from there, but I have some serious reservations about doing so, because I don't know if/how a partial install of CS2 will impact upon my installation of CS4, and I'm not confident of getting support.
I am also curious to know if/why Adobe actually removed basic functionality without replicating or replacing it in their other software. I really want to know: which recent, currently supported Adobe product
should I be using in order to regain this functionality? Or do Adobe no longer produce a geniuinely comprehensive .gif-editing application?

  • Button Text options

Okay I have been working on C3 for 2 months. Subscribed to
Lynda.com...ran tutorials checked every help link. The Fireworks
Help function stinks. Editing button symbols, here's what you get

"Fireworks button symbols are a special kind of symbol. They

Fireworks button symbols let you take advantage of the

a button instance, such as text, without affecting other
    instances."
Just fabulous, really.....How? Adobe tells me that it can be
    done.....just not how.
I import a 3 position button from the library. I use the 9
