Fireworks PNG file to iPhone
I am trying to use Fireworks to create PNG files to use in my iPhone app and they are not rendering properly. I have read that Firworks has it's own PNG format, do I need to do something special to make it work with the iPhone?
Thanks for any assistance.
Hi Steve:
I pulled this from the iPhone Resource Library:
Note: The standard bit depth for icons and images is 24 bits (8 bits each for red, green, and blue), plus an 8-bit alpha channel. The PNG format is recommended, because it preserves color depth and supports an embedded alpha channel. You can use the Preview application to produce the final PNG file.
You do not need to constrain your palette to web-safe colors. Although you can use alpha transparency in the icons you create for navigation bars, toolbars, and tab bars, do not use it in application icons.

Hello...I'm trying to use Fireworks to create a PNG file for a tab bar icon. I create the image, save it and add it to my solution but the file does not appear.
I notice in Finder that the file type is a Firworks PNG file and not a regular PNG file. Research has told me there is a difference?
How do I save a Fireworks PNG file to a regular PNG file so I can use it in my application?
Thanks for your help. This is not the developer forum, you need to go there for your answers:

How to export a PSD file with layers to Fireworks PNG file.
Hi
I've been asked by someone I'm working for to supply the work I've done as a PNG file that can be edited. I was told that a layered PSD file can be converted to a layered fireworks PNG file. I've tried all sorts of things but either ended up with a flattened image or each layer as a seperate file. I've searched all over for answers but nothing as yet!
thanksYes, individual PNG-24 files from Photoshop is what you want. In Photoshop, File>Scripts>Export Layers to Files; browse to save location; choose PNG-24 as the file type; check transparency. Prior to this, if you have floating imagery in any layers in the Photoshop file, you will want to place 1-pixel dots in 2 opposing image corners on those layers, so the all layer sizes will be exported at the same size, for layer-registration when composed in Fireworks. Then delete those dots in the exported PNG files and resave.
Then you will need to compose the layers in Fireworks. Once you get your individual layers in PNG format, you might want to pose this question in the Fireworks forum. -
Opening Fireworks .png file from Dreamweaver
Anybody have problems with the connectivity between Fireworks
and Dreamweaver? I have a Retail version of Macromedia Studio 8.
I've been designing a new site and noticed that my fireworks .png
file is not updating from my changes in Dreamweaver (probably
because I cannot open from the edit button in Dreamweaver.) When I
try to open the .png file from the Edit button at the bottom of the
Properties Panel in Dreamweaver it gives me an Error Message :
Unable to Launch. Please be sure that the application exists and
that there is enough memory.
Obviously the only benefit of Macromedia suite is the
connectivity. Well, since I don't have it it is sucking. Was it a
misinstallation on my part? Anybody know what's happening here or
how to fix?
Thanks,
JPCopy the file off the server, then open it?
And what version of Photoshop are you using? On what OS version?
Most likely this is a bug in the OS or server software that just shows up because of the asynchronous file IO used by Photoshop (to improve performance). -
Older fireworks .png files now crashing?
I just performed apple's software update last night. This morning, when going to open a png file I created last year, I was surprised the application crash. Next time I opened the file, it allowed me to select a layer, then it crashed. Luckily, many newer png files I've checked seem to be working fine. Also, png files without layers or text seem to open fine too.
I'm using Fireworks MX but have recently upgraded DreamWeaver to CS4.
Any ideas???????????
Thanks.Make sure the PNG files are in the same location they were when you last opened them, and that you haven't removed any fonts you used in creating them. A corrupted font could also be the problem.

Fireworks PNG file format specification
Are there any documents on Adobe's PNG format? Is there an SDK? Someone I can contact to get my hands on some documentation for this format? I am particularly interested in Adobe's mkTS and mkBT PNG chunks. Any help or direction is appreciated. Thanks.
Seriously don't you have any idea of the end-goal ?
Fireworks uses PNG as native file format, which is really good, decorated with meta-data to store plots and layers information, still a good idea...
...but does not provide a clear specification of such metadata, which is really bad as it captures users to a proprietary format.
Remember that people use your software because they found it efficient, not because they're obliged to, for interoperabity issues. -
IPhone not able to view PNG file
Hi,
I transfer png file to iPhone but it is not viewable from iPhone
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9537/testfp6.png
Did any one experience the same problem? That is a HUGE picture. The Photo app has issues with large (file size) pictures. I would think though iTunes does "optimize" photos when you sync (scale them down) but perhaps even that scaled down in size (height x width) the file size is still large. Convert to JPG and see how it goes.

I have a Fireworks png file that i am trying to save out as a
psd. I can do so, but when I open in Photoshop, the layer groups I
created in my Fireworks png file are not preserved. The layers stay
put, but photoshop ignores the layer folder (or groups) and puts
them all in one big bucket. Is there a way to preserve the layer
groups during my saving to psd process?
Also, I have text in my png file that uses -4 letterspacing.
When I save as PSD, and open in Photoshop, the letterspacing
changes to -40. Anyway to get around this? I need to text to remain
editable is photoshop also.Reaganjudd wrote:

I've written three different tutorials for CMX that deal with
converting
complex PNG files to PSD files. Fireworks has both LAYERS and
OBJECTS,
while Photoshop is really just layer-based. With the current
version of
FW there is no way that I know of to preserve this hierarchy
when you go
from PNG to PSD, but you can recreate the same set up
manually once the
file has been saved as a PSD and opened in Photoshop.
Here's how I tackled it:
1 Start by making sure that all objects are ungrouped (to
avoid any
object flattening in the Save as PSD process) and
individually named,
because FW will use these names for the layers it creates
when the PSD
file is made.
2 Save the file as a psd file.
3 Launch Photoshop and open the newly created PSD file. Keep
the
original PNG file open in Fireworks
Create and Fill Your Layer Groups
4 Refer to the original Fireworks PNG file and create a
series of empty
Layer groups that will mimic the Layer/object hierarchy of
the PNG file.
5 Name each group as seen in the PNG file. The easiest way to
create
empty Layer Groups without nesting them within each other is
to press
the Create New Group icon at the bottom of the Layers
Palette. This icon
looks like a file folder. To save time, you can double-click
on the
layer names in Fireworks, copy the name and then double-click
on the
Layer group name in Photoshop and paste the text.
6 Once the groups are named expand the layers in the PNG so
you can see
the objects within each layer. Find the matching layers in
the Photoshop
file, select them and begin dragging them into the
appropriate groups.
If you leave any objects/layers invisible in Fireworks when
you save as
a PSD, they are still exported and will still remain hidden
when you
open the file in Photoshop.
For more detail (and pictures) you can check out this article
on CMX.
It's based on converting one of our JumpStarts to a PSD file,
but the
workflow is applicable to any FW PNG file.

Finding original Fireworks .pngs from Dreamweaver?
I'm taking over another person's work and they built the
designs in Fireworks. I have an HR page that has photos that get
updated all the time (lots of turnover I guess) and I'm not really
a Fireworks guys (use Photoshop) and I've kinda figured out that
there is a ".mno" (I think that's what it is) file that stores the
metadata to show where the .gif or .jpg was made from the Fireworks
.png file.
I guess my question is, in matters of workflow, how do I
efficiently set up a .PNG file (from scratch) that saves its slices
in either .jpg or .gif, with the "here is the path to the original
.png" flag so when I come back to editing the .html in DW, I can
see a flag that says "find the original .png on Hard Drive 2"?
I just did a search on OSX Spotlight for the image file and
it came up with the same named file as .mno or something like that.
When I opened that as a text doc, it gave a path, which fortunately
helped me find the original .png this time, so I didn't need to
rebuild the image from scratch. I did this through the "back door"
of using OSX's search function.
There are times I'm so busy, I need to find stuff fast. How
do I find original .pngs from .jpg/.gif images made in Fireworks,
easily?
How do I set up a good workflow from FW to DW?
Thanks in advance,
nick> How do I set up a good workflow from FW to DW?
Export the graphics from FW and place them on the page in DW.
Don't worry
about any more than that. Trying to use FW to write your HTML
gets everyone
into deep trouble.

Difference Between Fireworks PNG vs Flattened PNG?
Hello,
I want to save my image as a PNG, however, Fireworks gives me the option to save as a "Fireworks PNG" or as a "Flattened PNG". What is the difference?
Thanks in advance!PNG file is basically a raster format but Fireworks png document still holds the vector information about objects. Another basic difference is the presence of information related to Layers, Pages and states present in Fireworks PNG files.

DW won't open PNG file to edit in Fireworks
I have a complex Fireworks file inserted as part of my html page. I'm trying to edit and update it from Dreamweaver, but it will not open the file in Fireworks.
It's a png file that has been updated from an older version of Fireworks, but I've done a save-as and re-exported the slices and html, then re-inserted it into the page. It still will not open the file in Fireworks.
As a test, I created a new png file, exported it, inserted it into the html page, then tried to edit it in Fireworks. And that does allow me to edit, click done, and then the changes show up on the html page. So it's something with my original file, but I can't figure out what it might be.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this working?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Can you open images normally in Photoshop Elements? I would recommend including this information as well as which verson of iPhoto and Mac OS you are using to the Photoshop Elements forum. It might also possibly be a problem with iPhoto but the users in the Photoshop Elements forum should better be able to determine where the problem lies.

I have over 1000 PNG files that do not have exif 'date taken'. They only have exif 'date created or modified'
The 'date created/modified' is not the actual date that I took the screen shots.
I added the 'date taken' manually in windows explorer. However, it seems that this does not write this data into the exif 'date taken' which remains blank.
When I transfer the PNG file from the PC to IPhone Photo App, it does not appear on the 'date taken' (that I added manually) but appears on the exif 'date created or modified'.
Interestingly, when I do same as above but with JPG file, it does show up correctly based on the 'date taken' (that I added manually in windows explorer).
So I converted the PNG file to JPG using one of the online tools. However, when I do this, the converted file does not retain the 'date taken'.
I can fix the above by:
1. Use Paint to save the PNG file as JPG; this retains the 'date taken' but this is not the solution I am looking for as I would need to do this for each file (there is no bulk 'save as' in Paint)
2. Use a file conversion tool to bulk convert from PNG to JPG; but again this is not solution, as I would have to manually add the 'date taken' in windows explorer to each JPG file
Alternatively, I tried to rename the file name to include the 'date taken' and then use an exif date changer app to set the xhif dates based on file name.
However, I was not able to find any software that would allow me to do this. The software that I have seen only picks up the 'date taken' from file EXIF data. But in my case there is no such data in the file - only the 'date taken' that I manually added in Windows Explorer.
Any advice is appreciated. All I want to do is transfer PNG files from PC to Iphone Photo app and have these files appear in Photo app based on the 'date taken' (the one I manually added in windows - not the date taken in exif data).Have you touched the "More" button (on the iPhone).
then gone to Audio Books.
Are they there?
I had an audio book still on my iphone, it survivedf the iOS5 update.
To get rid of it, I plugged iPhone into Mac,
Go to itunes.
Click on Iphone in iTunes.
Go to Books tab,
Scroll down, there is audio books.
Choose sync selected audio books,
And untick the ones I don;t want.

Can not set source file for Fireworks png in Dreamweaver
I recently purchased Adobe Design Premium CS5 to replace my CS3, but I have a big
problem. When I export a png in Fireworks to Dreamweaver it does not set the source
file correctly. It places the Fireworks object on the page, but when I select the table
that holds the Fireworks object, the path for the source on the Properties panel is
wrong - it says menu2.png. The correct document relative path is dress_images/menu2/menu2.png.
When I drag the Point to File icon over the menu2.png on the Files panel, it correctly displays
the full path, but when I let go of it, it sets the path back to menu2.png. I can not even type it
in the source box and get it to stay.
Here is the problem. When I click on the Edit button, it says it can't find the png. It is using
the full path from the C: drive instead of the document relative path. If I browse to the png file
and open it in Dreamweaver then click the Done button, it saves the png file but does not change
any of the content on the HTML page.
Fireworks and Dreamweaver CS3 worked perfectly here. Help!
I just tried to do this on another computer. This time when I pasted the Fireworks HTML onto the
page in Dreamweaver it set the path correctly (it was a root relative path instead of a document
relative path). I tried to edit in Fireworks using the Edit button, and it opened Fireworks without
any problem. I made some changes then clicked the Done button. Now the Done button is suppose
to be like magic. It is suppose to save the changes to the png file, make the changes on the HTML
page in Dreamweaver, and change any of the supporting files (images) that have been edited. It
always worked this way in CS3, and anything less than this would be a huge step backwards. In this
case, it saved the changes to the png, but did not make any other changes. The web page in
Dreamweaver is still the same. How do I get the Done button to work its magic using CS5.
Another problem - when I paste the code onto the page, the page looks totally messed up. If I save it
and reopen it then it looks fine. However, this never occurred with CS3. Aren't updates to software
suppose to be improvements?
Thanks.
NathanYes, the web site is correctly defined in Dreamweaver. I teach web design for both high school and
adult school, and I have done this procedure 100's of times with CS3. There is something different with
CS5. I took your suggestion and imported the Fireworks HTML using Insert -> Image -> Fireworks HTML,
but it still does not work. I can edit it in Fireworks, hit the Done button, and the png file is saved but
the HTML page remains the same.
Also, the export does not get the path right, and it will not let me set the path right. The only way the path
is right is if the page that I am pasting the Fireworks HTML is in the same folder as the png. It always
sets the png's path as menu.png. Therefore, if the page is in a different folder, the document relative path
won't find it. This was never a problem with CS3. In fact, you could paste the code using Control-V and it
would work 100% of the time. That is how we always did it. When exporting from Fireworks, I would set
Export to "copy to clipboard" then move to Dreamweaver, click where I wanted the code pasted and do Control-V and presto it would
always work. You could come back a month later, select the table, click the Edit button, make changes
in Fireworks, click the Done button and the changes would be reflected on the HTML page in Dreamweaver without
doing anything more. I have tried it with "copy to clipboard" and I have tried it with "export HTML file". Neither
works. There is definitely something different between CS3 and CS5, and right now I am missing CS3.
Thanks for your help. I will keep fighting this until I get it, but any additional input would be appreciated.

Why don't .png files display in Safari for iPhone, iPad?
Why don't .png files display in Safari for iPhone, iPad?
James,
Thanks for your response. The image was on a site I maintain. I have already replaced the image with a jpg, which works fine. I believe I can duplicate the problem, if you think it is worth it. Gimme a few...
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about2.html is the page with the png I restored to use.
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about.html is the page with the replacement jpg
Just checked. The png still does not display on iPhone(5) or iPad(3). The image was also made by me in pixelmator and both (png and jpg) were exprted from pixelmator.
thanks again,

I am sure this is a well known problem, but I can't find a
solution that works. I am using Fireworks 8 on a PC with Windows
XP. For some unknown reason it has stopped saving png files,
although it will save as gif, jpeg etc.
When I try to save a file I get a message "Could not complete
the requested action. An internal error occurred". It is not a font
problem as it won't save a file which contains no fonts.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program,
deleting the preference file, but to no effect.
Can someone please point me to a solution that works.
Thanks for the help

Try deleting the Fireworks 8 preferences text. On my machine
it's located at
C:\Documents and Settings\Linda Rathgeber\Application
Data\Macromedia\Fireworks 8\English
The file will rebuild itself when you reload the program,
resetting all
the defaults.
