Fireworks vectors to print

I used to use Photoshop but became a FW fan about 3 years ago
and I have not touched PS since.
I do mostly web related work - however on occasion we'll
created a 'company emblem' (dare we call it a logo) that a client
likes and wants to use in their print medium. I have a hard time
importing a vector 'logo' that got created in FW into Illustrator
(it barely resembles).
Our shop has recently ugraded to CS3 however we still have FW
MX 2004.
My questions are kind of muttled and combined:
1. Will there be a future for FW - I see on their web site by
doing a Google search that there is a CS3 version of FW but I don't
see it on their products page of the Adobe site.
this leads into question....
2. Now that I have PS CS3 it seems there are vector-raster
abilities - so I am wondering should I switch back to PS (knowing I
am like 3 versions behind and it seems so foreign to me) or should
I keep on with FIREWORKS (will FW still be around)?
This based on...
3. I do not know Illustrator but am going to invest time into
learning it enough to produce acceptable 'print ready' files for
our clients to take elsewhere...
IN SUMMARY:
Again we mostly do web only graphics and lay outs - we are
not a firm that creates corporate identities so I would say we are
not a logo design firm however, some times when a client does not
have a logo and we make something on their web design they want to
use it for print medium - and so I need to work in a graphics
program that will allow me the ability to produce a vector that is
'print shop' friendly (as I said, if I save a vector as a FW .png
and try to import it into Illustrator it gets pretty messed up).
Any ideas which way I should go in my graphics program
choices?
THANK YOU!

Fireworks CS3 is alive and well, and there are some
significant
improvements in this latest version. Photoshop does have some
vector
capability, but it's not nearly as flexible or intuitive as
FW's
handling of vectors. If you're doing web graphics, FW is
still the place
to be.
As for integration between the apps, FW handles importing
PSD's and AI
files much better than PS or AI handle importing FW PNG
files. If you
want to bring something into AI, you need to save it as an AI
file
within FW, but be warned; FW only saves as AI 8 format. It
will import
AI CS3 files fairly well, though.

    i created the above in ill CS4 [i created the above PDF for you to see].  i printed it direct from the ill file and the curves are not what i thought they would be.  but then again, maybe it's because of the printer we use?
    we use an HP 2550 color laser printer.  maybe this printer can't handle the pen tool vector shapes?  am i not making the shapes the proper way to insure they are smooth when printed?  or is it the printer?

    is there

    Is your printer a postscript printer? What resolutions does it support? What is its max resolution?
    If it is a Postscript printer check the settings in Advanced of the print dialog.

  • Save as EPS - Include Vector Data - Printing problems

    Hey everyone
    I'm having an issue with PDFs that I send to a specific newspaper and only them. The problem only occurs in the vector data that is saved in the EPS to be distilled.
    Here's an overview of my workflow
    *Build ad in Photoshop CS3
    *Save EPS with Preview:Macintosh(8Bits);Encoding: ASCII85; Include Vector Data; all other options not checked
    *Distill EPS to Press Quality PDF
    *Send to newspaper
    The problem looks like their RIP is choking on the vector data (primarily text) in the ad. It appears to start to print the text and then just stops or prints a bunch of garbage where the text should be.
    I have their in-house Distiller settings and use those now instead of Press Quality. This should rule out any problems with the Distiller settings.
    I send dozens of PDFs a week to multiple publications and only have trouble with this one. Is it possible that the "Preview" and/or "Encoding" in the EPS is the problem? Any suggestions what the bare bones settings should be for "Preview" and "Encoding" for the EPS? I want to keep the Vector Data b/c the outputted text remains crisp.
    Thanks!

    I agree with Mike.
    A lot of newspapers are not making a lot of profit and, as a result, may not have up-to-date RIPs. This is demonstrated by your statement that this is the only publication you have problems with.
    If your only concern is file size, know that either way, you're dealing with small files. Try the direct-from-Photoshop route with the paper and see what happens. Get the production guru at the paper to work with you on solving the problem.
    Also, what happens if you Distill the file as an industry-standard PDF/X-1a file. If you see that the file is compliant, you shouldn't have a problem.

  • Fireworks -- PDF for print, keeping editable text?

    I'm trying to print flyers (to PDF) that i've designed in
    Fireworks. I'm happy with the images, colors, etc., however, the
    text also exports as an image. I'd like to be able to export the
    text as text so that when a viewer zooms in on the pdf, the text
    does not become grainy. Also, the physical printing of the text
    would look much more clear. I'm sure there are proper terms that
    i'm not using, but i hope that someone more experienced than me is
    reading! Just trying to keep the text "editable" when printing to
    PDF from Fireworks. Any input would be appreciated. THanks! (BTW,
    going through Photoshop won't work because it changes the text
    layout too much.)

    In addition to Linda's comments, you can save your Fireworks
    .png as an
    Illustrator 7 .ai file. Then import that to Freehand or
    Illustrator (if
    you have them). Most of your design will remain intact and
    you might not
    have to start from scratch.
    I just did that on my pc but, unfortunately, the text is what
    imported
    the worst.

  • Simple vector transparency - printing problems

    Morning everybody,
    I'm having problems printing a PDF which has been generated from Indesign CS3.  The problem also arises when printing directly from Indesign.  Everything appears OK when on screen.
    I have a background colour, in front of which i have placed an Illustrator CS3 file which is a row of white squares with gaps (transparent) between then.  The squares are white, but I really want them to fade from a hue of the background colour to fully transparent.  To achieve this I have used a gradient feather, going from opacity 50% to opacity 0%.  [See sceenshot]
    My problem is that all the squares show up when I print the file, even the ones which should have an opacity level of 0%.  On the printout the gradient feather is visible (i.e. the squares 'fade out'), but they do not compeltely fade out to fully transparent.
    Does anyone have any tips?
    Thanks very much for any help with this.
    Robin

    Thanks a lot for your reply.
    I don't have a brilliant understanding of colour, but I believe that all the colours in the document are process [see screenshot].
    Turning on overprint preview doesn't change the appearance of the document.  Nor does turning on simulate overprint in acrobat.  In both cases, the appearance of the document on screen is how i want it to print.

  • Printing to PDF in Fireworks

    I've seen some posts about printing in Fireworks over the years and none of them have been resolved. Here's trying again.
    What is the correct solution for exporting to PDF format from Fireworks and retaining print resolution? I have a document at 300 dpi, 8.5 x 11, with the hope of it printing on a normal sized piece of paper. When I export to PDF, it is about 4 times larger than the 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. When I give people that PDF, they try to print it and get just a small portion of the image that covers the whole piece of paper. The same thing happens when you try to print directly from Fireworks, it's way too large for the print size. Apparently, Fireworks ignores print size dimensions.
    Other than the obvious solution of not using Fireworks when you want to create something for print, what is a good workaround? Surely others have been as dumb as me and tried to use Fireworks for print materials. What workarounds are there? Keep in mind, the solutions I've seen from others - such print at 72 dpi and have it look bad, are not an option. Do I really have to try to bring it into Illustrator or InDesign to print or is there a way to do this in Fireworks, or possibly Acrobat Pro (which I have)? I can force Acrobat Pro to print it at the correct size, but that doesn't help others who I send this to when they go to print it.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    I'm using kdemod and had the same error message when opening print preview. Installing kdemod-kdegraphics-kghostview did help there. But i doubt it will help with your fonts problem.

  • Pasting vectors from Fireworks to Photoshop as smart objects

    I'm trying to copy a vector object from Fireworks CS5 to Photoshop CS5, I want to past it as a Smart Object.
    I tried:
    - Normal copy and paste to PS: gives me a bitmap in PS
    - Copy as Vectors in FW > paste in PS gives me the paste option palette. When selecting Smart Object, I get an error:
    "Could not place because the parser module cannot parse the file."
    - Pasting the Fireworks vector object in Illustrator, then copying and pasting it in PS works fine, I can paste it as Smart Object.
    This should be straighforward, and used to work in CS3...
    Can anybody confirm this bug/problem?

    Doesn't work for me either. You can report bugs here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Printing vector

    Hi,
    Does anyone know why this generate a weird error?
    StringTokenizer strok;
    Vector temp;
    String stemp = "This is a test";
    strok = new StringTokenizer(stemp);
    temp = new Vector();
    while(strok.hasMoreTokens())
    temp.add(strok.nextToken());
    System.out.println("Vector is: " + temp.size());
    System.out.println("Vector is: " + temp);
    Here is the output:
    Vector is: 4
    Vector is: [This, is, a, test]
    Why does it have the brackets and the commas in the
    vector?
    how can I eliminate those[brackets and commas]?

    That's probably the way the println function is written for Vectors. To eliminate them, you'll probably have to use a for loop and just print out each vector element individually like this...
    for( while there's elements in the Vector )
    get the next Vector element
    Print element
    }

  • Bad photo prints on HP CP5225dn Printer

    Hey all,
    Having an issue outputting photos on my new HP Color LaserJet P5225dn printer from Adobe products. Am curious if anyone else might have run across the same issue and possibly found a solution. Here's the background information...
    Running Windows 8.1 Pro.
    HP Envy Phoenix w/Intel core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
    32 GB RAM
    2TB Raid 0 HD
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 640
    Spyder-profiled HP Pavilion 25xi monitors (dual setup)
    Running Adobe Creative Cloud (latest builds--issue present in prior versions, too).
    Using HP Universal Print Driver PS (latest version--only option on Windows 8), but have tried PCL 4 and 5 drivers as well.
    When printing from Adobe products, any photo seems to print without the yellow color. Color swatches and vector files print correctly. This issue seems to only apply to raster images--greens print blue, browns print purple, oranges print magenta. I have had HP support out to examine hardware of printer and everything checks out.
    I have tried every combination of ICC profile, paper setting imaginable. Have tried printing as CMYK and RGB. Have reset preferences in Adobe software. Color issues are present in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and the images print consistently off in all products (is purple in INDD is also purple in PSD, etc.). I have reset printer to defaults. I have tried removing color management and printing. I have tried printer diagnostics. I have tried having the printer manage color. I have tried having the application manage color. Everything prints consistently wrong.
    I've updated video drivers, searched for ICC profiles specific to the printer, recalibrated monitors, no dice. Funny thing is that when you take that same file and send it to another printer, it prints accurately.
    Any ideas for troubleshooting are much appreciated. Any solutions would be fantastic.

  • Image gets cut off when printing tiles

    My InDesign file includes an 8" x 28" page containing a full-bleed image that prints as 4 tiles of 8.5" x 11".  Whenever I print, the image does not print on the first tile. The foreground text and vector graphics print fine. The image is a PSD, but I've also tried flattened TIFs and JPGs with the same results. Even if I make the page twice as big so nothignbleeds, the image doesn't print on the first tile that should contain the image.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

    Thanks for the ideas.
    I thought about printing from a PDF, but I couldn't find a way to print tiles in Acrobat. I'll see if I can print to tiles as a PDF. I also will see what happens if I place a PDF into the InDesign file, then print that.
    I didn't log in as a different user, but I did open on another computer, with same results.
    Never heard of .inx, but I'll try that too.
    Some new twists:
    1) When I flip the page orientation upside-down in the print dialogue box, the opposite happens - the last image tile doesn't print.
    2) Today I printed the page at 50% and it worked fine with all image tiles printing correctly.

  • Print Problems in Firefox only

    When I print my pages in Firefox, a white border shows up
    around the words in the menu boxes, which I created in Fireworks.
    It prints just fine in Internet Explorer. Any suggestions?
    http://www.hiringsolutionsinc.com/test/index.html

    There's something with the way you've generated the fireworks
    code. I've
    spent about an hour on this and if I isolate the tables
    containing the
    navigation items, everything looks alright in print-preview.
    The same thing
    breaks up if I keep the whole page together.
    I can only suggest that instead of making so many slices of
    the menu items
    in fireworks and exporting them, make big slices. Your
    intention maybe that
    for instance the word "Home" is for the href link while the
    areas around it
    should not be part of the link and thats why you've sliced
    the images in
    such small slices. I would suggest using larger slices and
    let the whole
    slice be the link.
    For the horizontal menu each item is nested in a table with
    width=145px.
    Instead of using numerous small elements and spacers, just
    make one slice
    for each menu item and keep it 145px wide. Would give you
    leaner code and
    would solve your problems.
    Similarly for the vertical menu, cut one slice for each menu
    item and keep
    that slice 128px wide. That would get rid of all the extra
    slices and
    spacers being generated by Fireworks.
    The real solution to your problem is to "NOT" use fireworks
    for generating
    such menus. You can use any of the many free CSS based menu's
    available off
    the net.
    Also, please do not name a class "body" . Its a reserved word
    for the <body>
    tag and may lead to problems sometime sooner or later.
    You cannot lose until you give up !!!

  • Print materials from Photoshop instead of Illustrator

    Hi all,
    I occasionally have to print signage, and usually  "design in Photoshop> import graphics into Illustrator> replace text in Illustrator> save as PDF".
    I just designed a 300dpi effects heavy image, and am wondering about the ability to save from Photoshop without having to mess with Illustrator. I've seen mention of "exporting in vector format" and it is 300dpi.
    = Is my work-flow the most efficient way to do it?
    = Can I essentially save/export a PDF from Photoshop that will keep the text vector and print as it would if exported from Illustrator?
    Your advice and input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lands

    For the first question I think it is not efficient. For efficiency I would either 1) Use only Illustrator or 2) Use only Photoshop or 3) Do your design in Illustrator and import into Photoshop. The last option probably depends on the subject matter of the document, but still the output options from Photoshop are preferred by some over Illustrator.
    Question 2: You can get high quality PDF output from Photoshop. Below is a small portion of a pdf file created by Photoshop and shown in Acrobat. It is being shown at 2400% magnification and shows 30 pt vector text and portions of two circles. The circle on the right is a simple pixel rendering and the circle on the left is a vector shape - the difference is evident.
    If you work in Photoshop alone I would suggest starting with two pieces of information to create your initial working document - the number of pixels per inch (not printer dots/inch) you think you need and the size of the desired printed document - multiply them. If you wanted 500 pixels/inch and a 6" x 4" print then set your photoshop document to 3000 x 2000 pixels (minimum). Also, use vector elements in your document wherever possible.
