Firmware Failure... Ipod Shuffle *****

This is my first Apple product. How can people even like is pile of crap?
The Itunes software is totally non-user friendly and my Ipod Shuffle is totally "locked-up" after 95 days of use. I have a "firmware failure" message and my computer will not recogonize the Ipod any more. After 4 calls to support (2 dropped calls by the answering system... which was nice) the tech said that I could mail the Shuffle in for repair... but it would cost $30 for S&H. What a scam!

hey buddy. i got mine yesterday. and i'm taking it back sometime today when i get a chance.
mine won't be recognized by the software either. this reminds me of my RCA lyra that i smashed to pieces with a hammer.
i was recently lent a sony PSP by a friend today to put music on it for him, and bingo, worked no problemo. (i'm listening to music on / from it as we speak now)
i've had many mp3 players and devices.. but it seems like some of the big companies have their fingers in their bum.
i'm undecided to get a new shuffle or get my money back. i really like the design and it's functions (mainly the lanyard cap), but if it doesn't work. it's really a shuffle used as a playing card. paperweight.

i would be very pleasured if someone would send me the US edition of ipod shuffle 4g, the .ipsw file and the .ipsw.signature file, because i live in EU and i want to give a try on breaking the volume limit
my email is [email protected], if someone can send an email with the attachments, i will be very pleasured

The first thing you should do is make sure the headphones are plugged all the way in, meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Shuffle and no silver from the plug can still be seen.
It wouldn't hurt to also reset the Shuffle.

IF you have NO problems/issues with your Shuffle, you don't need to update... apparently 1.1.5 has solved a problem with playing recently released music purchased from the iTunes Music Store.

  • Computer can't read or wright to my ipod shuffle

The computer seems to recognise the ipod and the tunes seem to transfer but the ipod will not play, when I try to autofill I get the message that the disk 'cannot be read or written to'. I've tried restoring to the factory settings but I get a message'can't mount ipod'. can anybody help with this?

    hi Ossie!
hmmmm. i'm no expert with the Shuffle. but for other models, this is a good place to start with the read/write message:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod

  • IPod Shuffle Error 1418: discovering more, let's try new ways

I tried to fix my iPod without success, reading every single message of this board or in googgle... and I found a interesting thing: the iPod Shuffle has the same behaviour of a DAMAGED pen drive or memory stick. Let's not focus on iTunes7, iTunes6, restore it, update it, etc.. it won't work. Let's focus instead on HOW to force Windows to recognize that there is a 1GB disk inside the pen drive we are attaching. The goal then is to format it via an utility like "HP Format tool" or via "Command": afterwards I think it would be a game to restore it in iTunes. We can try also with utilities for pen drives data recovery, I don't know
And about the cause of the problem, I found it could be that the iPod Shuffle can fail when removed without clicking on "Secure Hardware Remove" in windows
Ok, I tried to pull out some ideas, only alltogether we can have success. Apple abandoned us, let's face this situation and let's try to recover this iPod Shuffle, cause I can't accept I have to trow it and buy a new player.
    Thanks and good luck

OK guys, after one week without sleeping, searching every corner of the web and every corner of dedicate forum (this site,iPodLounge,etc...), I have to give up. These are my final conclusions (I am an electronic engineering student here in Italy, I love music, I talked to a lot of collegues and friends, I asked for others opinions: I can't say I'm an expert, but I know where I'm putting my hands)
    1) I tried the iPod Shuffle in Windows XP, MAC OS X & Linux. The computer can recognize that an iPod Shuffle is attached, but it's impossible to read what's inside (I/O error). That means it's impossible to see the CAPACITY of the disk, it's impossible to FORMAT it (failure of commands like fdisk, chkdisk, format, mount, etc...) or to use disk utilities programs like HP Format Tool, Disk Utility in the Mac, Windows USB, etc... With Linux we have the information that the operating system can't read the iPod Shuffle first memory block. And in Windows in fact we have the message "insert a disk"
    2) For this reason it's impossible to fully restore the iPod with Apple utilities, just because we can't write on the flash memory of the iPod. This explains the 1418 error in iTunes 7 and the errors on the previous versions of iPod Updater. As I said before, iTunes recognize that the iPod is attached because it recognizes the hardware (as we can see in the Control Panel), but it doesn't recognize its flash memory and says it's corrupted (as we "cannot see" in the Disk Manager)
    3) The iPod Shuffle has the same behaviour of a traditional USB pen drive with a damaged flash memory
    4) I can assume that iTunes 7 has stressed the iPod Shuffle "burning some sectors" of the memory, it's just not a coincidence. Other reasons may be plugging out the device without clicking on "Remove securely hardware" on Windows taskbar, after the installation of iTunes 7. Anyway we must remember that iTunes7 incorporated the old iPod Updater, a new "iPod data usage" system, and a new volume limiter... Find your own conclusion..
    5) For newbies, remember that the iPod Firmware is ON the flash memory (that's why in 1GB models you saw only 990 MB free). If we can't restore the firmware, it means we can't restore the flash memory.
So, if your warranty has expired, I suggest 2 conclusions:
    1) Open your iPod and try to replace the flash memory with a new one.
    2) Take your iPod with you, go to the nearest Apple Center, and stick it in the right place you can find there....
Good luck to all of you and thanks for your attention!
PS: 2 years ago I bought an iPod shuffle in Singapore, only to found in Italy that the button was spoiled. The replacement served me till last week, when I had the idea to install iTunes 7.
But 4 years ago I bought a 20 GB Creative Nomad Jukebox 3. He's still here doing his job, and smiling to me when I need him. I used him even to djing in smoky and wet parties... and Creative is a Singapore brand...

  • What's wrong with my iPod shuffle? any ideas?

I received my iPod shuffle the other day, and have installed the software and started moving songs from my computer to the iPod. When the iPod is in my computer, the songs all show, but when I take it out, the iPod will not play... is this a fault with my iPod? or am I doing something wrong?! the battery light goes green when I press the button, so I don't think it's that.
    Please help with this problem!!
    Thanks!!

Hey guys- I seem to be having much the same problem, only I seem to be unable to fix it.
I have a brand new iPod Shuffle which will happily accept files via iTunes, but when I try to make it play them it is totally unresponsive- almost as though the 'Play/Pause' button isn't working.
I've updated to the latest iPod software (2005.11.17), but still no joy. I've tried updating the software on the iPod itself but I get the following error:
    "Firmware update failure.
    Disk write error."
I'm going crazy trying to work out what the **** is wrong here- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Oh- and one more thing while I'm here:
"... go to www.apple.com/support for instructions on how to obtain warranty service."
Am I being very dumb here- where are these mythical instructions?!

  • Ipod shuffle/itune error

Ok so, I haven't used my ipod in a while, so I figured that I'd have to install some updates. When I plugged my shuffle in, instead of itunes popping up, an error message came up saying "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes."
I tried to uninstall the itunes and reinstall it with the software disk, but itunes will not let me remove it for some reason. I tried reinstalling it anyways by putting the itunes software in, but that didn't do anything.
I went to the troubleshooting for ipod shuffle section of this website and i installed the recent updates for my ipod like it suggested. When I tried to update it, and a message came up saying "firmware update failure. disk write error." I tried restoring it, and the same message came up. In troubleshooting, it gave 100 different possible reasons why that error message can show up. I don't know what to do. My computer has automatic updates everyday, so i'm pretty sure it's not my computer being outdated or anything. I'm not sure what the problem is. Is it my ipod or is it itunes? or both? someone please help.

You need to try and get iTUnes AND quicktime uninstalled first then reinstall iTUnes from apple.com
Goto control panel>add and remove and uninstall iTUnes AND quicktime. Then go here and roll down to "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
Now disable any antivirus and security programs and then goto apple.com to download and install iTUnes again

  • Ipod shuffle dose not show up in itunes and slow down my computer

hi i can see my ipod shuffle in my computer as removeable hard drive not my ipod name anymore and also i can't see my ipod in itunes at all and every time i connect my ipod shuffle it slow down my computer (very slow) and use my CPU 100% all the time my other usb hard drive(not ipod) works fine its only my ipod i also try to use all my usb port but its still the same thing.
and it can't be my windows because i have just reinstall windows 3 days ago
can someone help me fix this

I think I can add a bit to this problem.
My iPod stopped working during the first use after running the iPod Updater 2005-11-17. When a button is pressed both green & amber lights up.
When plugged into my computer, iTunes (vs 6.0.1.3) does not recognize it is there. Naturally, I tried to run the updater again (2005-11-17 version) and the program hangs. It does not use up the cpu though (~3%). Eventually, after ~5-10 min the updater recognizes there is an iPod and then the restore button can be pressed. However, soon after the updater gives the error "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"
I reinstalled iTunes and the iPod updater as well as tried to use the new updater (2006-01-10) and same error. I am in the process of checking the drivers now. But I still don't know what is causing this error...

  • Ipod shuffle system requirements for itunes 5 are they real?

The System requirements posted on Apple's website ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPodshuffle) for the Shuffle say it will work with iTunes 4.7.1 or later.
    Mac System Requirements
    - A Mac with USB port*
    - Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 and later (Mac OS X 10.3.6 or later recommended for use with low-power USB ports)
    - iTunes 4.7.1 or later (included)
The box on a new Shuffle says
Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later [snip]
    - iTunes 5.0 or later (included)
I've been using my Shuffle with X.3.8, iTunes 4.7.1 and iTunes 4.9, and Quicktime 6.5.2 until its minijack went defective. I need a replacement shuffle and don't want to upgrade my OS, my itunes, or my QT.
Are these system requirements for real? If I use the iPod Shuffle 1.1 updater will the new Shuffle work with my OS/itunes?
I ask about the updater because once when my current shuffle's playcount stoped updating an Apple Genius suggesting updating the firmware from ipod updater 1 to 1.1 and ever since I can't restore it to version 1 (it gives failure to update errors). I worry that a new Shuffle won't be downgradeable.
If not what version of itunes 5 is best? I recall it was so buggy that it was bum rushed out the door.
Under no circumstances do I want itunes 6. I had 6.0.1. and 6.0.2 on a new hard disk a few months ago (and it required X.3.9 and QT 7) and it was awful! The sound volume dropped precipitously and the sound check didn't work.

Never mind. I returned the Shuffle for a refund. Apple lost a repeat sale by failing to practice the slightest bit of backwards compatibility!
I'm now in the market for an MP3 player that will work on Macs and that can also record audio. If anyone knows of any makes/models please let me know.

  • Firmware failure. Disk write error.

I have gotten this new iPod shuffle, and I have installed the latest itunes, however when I try to install the latest software for the iPod I get "firmware failure. disk write failure." I get the same thing when I try to restore it. I cannot get windows or iTunes to recognize the iPod. Windows views it as a mass storage device, and it is completly oblivious to iTunes. Any suggestions as to what I can do? I have tried everything 3 times or more from the support pages.
I cant seem to contact any other type of support. Every time I try to use the chat section it tells me to enter a valid serial number...
    wow.
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Okay, this probably isn't what people want to hear, but if you have the dreaded 'Disk Write Error' failure, it doesn't necessarily mean your iPod is hooped.
Bought my Shuffle 1G yesterday. Brought it home, installed what I needed to (very little, as mine is the second Shuffle in the house). Anticipated problems, as my father's 512M Shuffle took three days to get working properly. I found myself pleasantly surprised to find that mine worked first shot, no muss or fuss. Funk-tacular!
Or not. Thingy worked fine all last night and this morning, but fell flat on its face when I plugged it in this afternoon. It didn't freeze solid (at first), but it refused to take in any more songs, and the ones that were loaded into it seemed to be draining out of the memory like water from an uncorked bathtub -- every time I managed to get Itunes to notice my little white headache, more memory reported as empty, though Thingy still refused to take in any songs (unable to read, or some such windows nonsense). Every time I tried to restore -- regardless of the update version, of which I tried three -- I saw the error mentioned in the title.
I'll delete about five hours of experimenting, hair-pulling, swearing, failing, wall-punching, and generally despairing over my iPlop purchase. Tried all five Rs to no avail, as well as formatting through windows. Nada.
I wish I could tell you exactly why it's working now. I can't; I got lucky. I downloaded iPod update (1-10-2006) and Itunes (6), wiped the system as clean as I could of old iPod and iTunes software (uninstall, erase folders, empty Recycle Bin, basically everything short of taking Windex to the hard drive). Reinstalled the Ipod software from the CD, reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod update, then for a lark decided to try for the fifteenth time to reinstall Thingy. Holy crap, it worked!! After a momentary freezeup and the requisite restore to fix it (a result of my yanking the stupid thing out of the port at the wrong time), Thingy is working fine.
The moral? Don't despair, it can be fixed! Try everything more than once, get the latest software, start from scratch -- right from the CD in the iPoop box -- and keeping banging your head on it as long as you can stand it. You might be surprised!

  • ITunes can't read/write my iPod shuffle

    from the beginning:
i bought my iPod shuffle 1 month ago. i installed all necessary software, connected my ipod and i got filled with music. GREAT ! i thought. that's really some kind of "plug 'n play". But then some days later, i wanted to load other music on my ipod shuffle. so i plugged it into my computer's usb-slot, iTunes opened, i clicked on "my iPod" selected a playlist out which the ipod should be (re-)filled and finally clicked on "fill automaticaly".
first it seemed, as if it works. the songs appeared on my ipod, but then some seconds later windows/iTunes gave me an error-message: "iPod can't be read or written".
so the old songs stayed on it.
so, i thought to be clever: i plugged my ipod into my 2nd computer, on which neither iTunes nor my iPod is installed. there i formatted my iPod. after that i plugged it into my "main computer" again and my ipod was empty. cool! that worked! therefor, i tried to fill the "totally clean" ipod again with music. but again: "ipod can't be read or written"
    what i already did:
    reset ipod
    restart ipod
    re-install iTunes + iPod
    update ipod-software
    changed device-letter for usb-storage-media (ipod)
insulted my ipod ( U damned son of a **, i hate U, go ahead and work... i think my ipod is laughing about me...)
but slowly i think the problem is not the ipod. i think it's my computer ?! 'cause on my 2nd PC (rather old and slow with 900mhz, 192mb ram, win2k, USB 1.0)
my ipod seems to work. but my 60GB of music are on my main-pc...
if it helps, here the config of my "main pc":
    AMD Athlon XP @ 2400mhz = 3500+
    1,5GB RAM
    Abit AN7 socket A mainboard, nforce2 ultra400
    nvidia GF6800
    2 HDD's ( 7 partitions) = totally 220GB
    2 optical drives
    1 floppy
    winXP pro SP2
changed (usb-)device letter of ipod to "O:\"
plz help me, if U ever experienced the same problem.
    thanks a lot !
