Firmware Password Not Changing

I have a iBook G4, from a school who had a surplus. But it had firmware on it, and although I was able to get rid of the firmware protection by physical access, I can't change the password. Every time I launch the program, and try to set the password it reverts back to the old password (I know this because my set password doesn't work) and I have to open the computer up again to get rid of the password.
I also tried to just disable the open firmware password before opening the computer up from the admin account and it won't even turn off!
How can I get the firmware password to what I want?

I fixed by resetting the firmware then going into firmware then typing...
password
(I entered the password here)
(I verified the password here)
setenv security-mode full
shut-down
And it saved my password! I won't be using the GUI interface from Apple anymore.

Tried your solution, but the problem still persists. I might have accidentally dropped one of the classes from the APPS schema since this problem occurred when i tampered with the APPS schema classes. I tried to manually dropp the java classes that are loaded with errors.
Also when i tried to loadjava again to load my own class, i receive an error:

  • 10.10.3: firmware password not working anymore!

    dear all,
since the great 10.10.3 my MBP 2015 doesn't recognize my firmware password anymore. What the ****?? I changed it lately, but, and I can't stress this enough: I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN IT! I know exactly what I typed, I also know I put it in correctly then and now.
    I am honestly ******!
    Any suggestions Apple?

Sorry for the monolog here, but Apple Support actually found a solution. This might be interesting for all INTERNATIONAL USERS:
Either always or just after an update, the keyboard in the fw-password-mode is set to USA!!! That means, characters like y and z switch place on the keyboard. If you have one of those in your password....well, it ain't gonna work.
But seriously, who would think of that?! Since in regular use, my keyboard works as usual, so I could never notice that. The only reason I didn't encounter that problem earlier is the absense of any of those characters in the earlier password.
But again: this affects only firmware-password!

  • Known freshly set firmware password, not being accepted on new MBP with retina. Locked out of bootmenu.

    Hello,
I have a MBP 15" with retina display and 16GB of RAM.
I bought it end August/early september and it has worked great so far, really happy with it.
After encountering some people that have had theirs stolen, i figured it was a good idea to enter a firmware password so that people can't use external drives to boot up from.
I just rebooted holding the alt key, clicked utilities -> firmware password and I set myself a password. It is one word, starts with a capital letter and has 2 numbers incorporated in it.
I then immediately rebooted and held alt again to test it. I enter the exact same password (100% sure) and for some reason it just deletes the entered password when i click enter/the ok arrow and it does nothing.......
Please tell me this is a known MAC problem, I am 100% sure i'm not going mad, but this kind of problem is annoying me! I have a dualboot windows 7 partition that I would like to continue to use without working virtually from within MAC OS X.
    Thanks, any ideas appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Nick

    Sigh i found it ....
Apple you could have mentioned that you enter it as QWERTY instead of AZERTY -_- My letters were coincidently all the same, however the numbers need shift pressed in the latter which they don't in the former.
Oh well, Back to enjoying my wonderful machine now
Bye and sorry for the unnecessary read! Hope it helps some with the same problem.

Novell Client 2SP3 on Windows 7 Professional - We are having a "weird" problem. The Novell Password is changing, but the Microsoft Password isn't even though the Client is set to change the Microsoft password to meet the Novell password. Has anyone seen this before? It has just started happening about 4 weeks ago. We've had about 10 people so far that this has happened while they were changing their password.

  • Open Firmware Password; not on Snowy Upgrade DVD; how do I get hold of it?

    hey;
my MBP15 came with 10.5 & i got the snowy upgrade dvd from apple; there's no Open Firmware Password utility on the upgrade DVD (i even searched using pacifist) and it cannot be downloaded from apple's downloads. this seems a serious omission since i protect my mac (somewhat) with it.
does anyone know how i can get it, since i think it's pretty product specific; if it's actually different from the version on the original 10.5 disk that shipped with the machine or would some kind soul with the same machine (MacBookPro5,1 MBP51.007E.B05) have to share it with me?

actually, don't trust me; i'm wrong.
thank you so much, roam! you do indeed have to boot from the dvd!
what had me fooled is that pacifist didn't find it, and it used to be a discrete file which you could simply drag from the utilities folder of the install disk on to your mac.
i have now enabled the firmware password!
    thanks again!

  • Filevault password not changed after recovery

    Hi,
I am currently testing the FileVault capabilities at work.
When I unlock a Mac with the recovery key, it gives me the possibility to set a new password and the desktop is presented. After a system restart I noticed that FileVault does not accept the new password. When I use the old password, the drive gets unlocked and then i need to log in again with the new password.
In the following article, Apple recommends to turn off FileVault and after decryption has ended to turn on FileVault again. OS X: About FileVault 2 - Apple Support. This is not an acceptable option as this takes approximately 10 hours to complete.
How do I get the FileVault and user account password in sync again without re-encryption?

The easiest way is to deauthorize the user to unlock FileVault in its settings, then re-authorize. To do that, you'll need to authorize at least one other user first.

  • Firmware Password Question

I just enabled firmware password protection for my MacBook. Everything is working as advertised but I just have to ask this question.
Anyone with a Leopard install disk can change you account password or firmware password. Is this correct?
    YGTBKM

    Király wrote:
What Niel means is that if auto login to the admin account is turned on, then the Startup Disk preference pane may be unlocked. This will allow the user to set a Leopard DVD as the startup disk, without further authentication.
no, that pref pane is always locked unless you manually unlock it with the admin password. automatic login doesn't change that. the same is true with the accounts pref pane. you don't need to unlock that one to change the password of the current user but you do need to enter the current user password in the password change popup. such obvious security holes are plugged in. but you are right about the firmware password not giving data protection in case of theft.
The firmware password simply prevents booting up from any other disk that isn't the set startup disk. A Mac with a firmware password set will still boot up from DVD if the DVD is set as the startup disk.
Once booted up from the Leopard DVD, the admin password may be changed without knowing the old one.
As a side note, many people misunderstand the use of the firmware password, and believe it will protect them from data theft if their Mac is stolen. It won't, because it can be easily defeated without knowing the password. Encryption is the only way to go to protect yourself from data theft.

  • I have a macbook pro (13inch). I had a firmware password set on it and updated the firmware when apple update told me to. I cannot change the firmware password or remove it now.

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro which had a firmware password set on it (security-mode = command).
Update asked me to install updates and one of them was an EFI update. I proceeded and the macintosh booted just fine.
I've tried changing the firmware password, and removing the password without success so far. It's almost like the nvram terminal command does nothing as far as security is concerned.
    Help would be appreciated!
    J

Apparently the newer macbooks use a different utility than the older macbooks.
setregproptool will ask for the current password, and nvram is not used for these anymore.

  • Firmware password removal not working ?

I have a Mac mini Core Duo with SL installed.
Since the Mac do not respond to key commands at boot time I suspected that firmware password protection was set.
    I read :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12801722&#12801722
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12069530
and thus I booted on the SL DVD and opened Firmware Password utility
I found that the check box was checked (before I installed Snow Leopard) but the two text fields were empty. Note that no password was ever asked at that stage or boot time with or without key options.
I unchecked the check box + reboot --> this made no difference :
    Boot-C, boot-alt, boot + cmd-opt-P-R, etc., nothing is active.
Worse than that, I cannot change the hard drive !
What am I doing wrong ?
    A

Yes, I physically changed the hard drive after opening the min.
Yes, all the disks I used are bootable. I connected them to the mini as external drives, installed SL from the DVD and checked that the mini can boot from each of these disks.
As soon that I installed one of these disk INSIDE the mini, everything is locked.
As soon as I reinstalled the original disk, everything is okay.
Because if so, that has nothing to do with a firmware password.
I read somewhere that setting up a firmware protection also forbid changing the hard drive.
Anyway, thank you very much for your interest in that strange problem. I discussed with two Mac-maintenance pros and they had no solution.

  • Reset or change Open Firmware Password

I recently set up a few computers with an Open Firmware Password.
I've read the following information on the Apple Support Site:
+Important: If you reset the PRAM or Open Firmware, you need to reselect your startup device prior to resetting the Open Firmware Password.+
+Warning: The Open Firmware Password can be reset and changed by any one of the following:+
+1. By any administrator user, as designated in the Accounts preferences (or in Server Admin).+
+2. Via physical access to the inside of the computer.+
+3. When the computer is started up in Mac OS 9.+
Here it says that an administrator can reset or change the Open Firmware Password, but it does not say how to do it. Can someone explain how I can reset or change a password.

Insert your "Mac OS X Install Disc" for Leopard, it contains a program to set and reset the firmware password. Because the corresponding folder on the disc is hidden you have to change directory by choosing "Go to folder" from the "Go to" Finder menu and typing in the dialog box:
    /Volumes/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/Applications/Utilities
Now Finder will display the contents of that folder. Copy "Firmware-Password" to your Applications folder. You have to be an administrator in order to change the password with that program. Let me know if that worked for you.

  • I tried to sign up for a new free account, got message from you. Sent you em address ask what is wrong. Find my em was right. condused. Tried change my profile, but never had a profile, and at that it says to change my password, not want to change it.

Wow, at age 76 I'm suppose to remember all I saw before and give you more details?
I wanted to be able to join the support blog, to be able to ask a question. It all went from there. Somewhere along the line I saw sign up for a new free (support?) account. I did. created a cute name (Marycontrary), put in a password, not likely one to be used by someone else, my em address. Sent. Got a confirmation em from you. I clidked to confirm. I got back from you: It said something wrong (or something like that) I thought maybe I didn't type in the last part of my em address and sent a reply to you to that effect. See above for rest. Hope you can help. I can't stand it when companies want us to change our passwords. I like us to be able to keep our original password, I use different ones for different sites. The best sites give us a chance to retrieve our orignial password by setting up a chance to choosing a question of our choice and registering the answer, then when a problem they as the question and we give the answer and everything goes well. These change you password bits are very very hard on us older people, and there are more and more of us out here on the net now days. Thank you for any help you can give me.'''bold text'''

  • HT202274 Password change old password not recognized after 10.9.5 upgrade

    God bless you, peace.
macbook pro 2012 user password not recognized after 10.9.4 too 10.9.5 upgrade plus tech work at apple.
I want to change user password, it is allowing me to get into user account and admin account on computer but I recently changed it for the tech work to be done. I would like to put the password back now to old password or a new one but... The few days old new password pre update and pre tech work is not being accepted to allow me to change to another password.
recent update, after 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 update and apple tech work done.
    1. Tech work replaced optical drive,
    2. 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 upgrade left computer endlessly booting up, then got into finder window tried to read backup drive and screen went to black curser and could not backup information as techs decided may need to be done before I left it with them.
    3. Also track pad was not (is not again) selecting text to drag unless real hard press and then only intermittently would select text or just drop the selection (not hold the selected text after a long scroll select, did work at first after tech work but back to not working). It is still not responding easily when pressed, but it is much better, as they did something with software they said. Today While typing this I am trying to select words misspelled and it does not select them unless I press not as hard it is becoming the same as before I see now, sometimes less pressure is needed but more than should be used.
I noticed today after tech work The Spell check is not responding with a two finger tap on the red underlined misspelled words without multiple try's with two finger tap. The curser moves around after selecting words also, or when selecting words so hard the curser moves to another place not on the desired words or check box. The curser arrow tip should select the word but it does not recognize unless I put the tail of the arrow onto the word then it recognizes the misspelled word for spell check on two finger gesture.
It looks like I need to take it back, I tried to call and check to confirm if the track pad intermittently and curser adjustment was serviced. In order to verify I had called three times to get that information to no avail. endless looped in the phone que, one would answer take info and then forward me to a endless loop dial ing phone that never was picked up, supposedly at the Bay street store tech section. Phone voice mail from apple support status on the repair, ...Juliano from Bay Street Apple repair store Emeryville, ca left a voice message... just generically said optical drive replacement is successfulI, I noticed right away three items were to be addressed but only the optical drive was mentioned, so I called three times to try and verify the other problems. One whole minute just to select this text and copy it to notes for a backup. It would not select at first, then after selected it would not copy it, then it would not paste to notes, it paste the last cut and paste I did 10 minutes ago.
I do not have a easy excellent wifi connection for my wifi only phone and would prefer email or chat for repair help. apple Repair No: R142180337

Try running the combo update. It fixes more files/data than the App Store upgrade.
