Firmware password: what protection other than disabling cd boot?

Is there a way to force it ask password everytime it boots? Currently only asks if I try to boot from the cd.

Have tested many products and many brands, and have yet to find a 3rd party device...including so called "universal" repeaters....that will actually extend an Apple network wirelessly.
You may have better luck than me if you have unlimited time and the store will allow you to return multiple products that do not work.
If you do find one that actually will extend the network, please let us know.

Active Protection now shows "disabled" upon boot up

Recent change. Do not know what changed, but this always worked for me. Perhaps recent Wndows Updates?
Active Protection comes up disabled after any boot or reboot. I recheck the option to Enable, but it is unchecked after each boot. Using XP Pro, T-61.
Any ideas for the fix?

try to check following:
- go to System Configuration Utility <Start->run-> type msconfig> and in the services and Startup tabs, make sure, that the option for Active protection enabled <checked>: "TpShocks"
- this same should be also in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\TpShocks value: TpShocks.exe
In case after you enable Active Protection and it's working fine, then this might be only a configuration issue, where perhaps and Antivir dissabled this applicaiton.

What software other than outlook can I use with iphone 5c for contacts, email and calendar?

What software will work with iPhone 5c where I can manage all contacts, emails and calendar and sync with my business desktop computer? From what I have seen from co-workers Microsoft outlook and iPhone doesn't work well together.

But the problem is, that it Did used to do this. It synced for a year and a half and now only in the past four months has it not synced...
Any thoughts?

What tools other than cardman can upload applet through UBS port?

The javacard2.2.1 guid says that it supports serial port. But my card reader connect the pc through UBS.
Currently I use cardman from JCOPTool to communicate with card.

You can write your own loader as long as you have an interface to the reader. PCSC is the defacto standard to do that and all reader manufacturers support it.
You can also use a kit provided by any card vendor. I recommend you write your own so you can develop a good understanding of how it all works.

Cannot connect to ftp server other than in safe boot

hello. After updating to 10.6, no ftp client in my use will connect or upload to an ftp server. Apple's finder (connect to server) shows the remote contents, but will not upload. Dreamweaver, FileZilla, Cyberduck and ClassicFTP don't connect at all. None of these occur in safe mode, which should indicate a conflict with third party software—however, which one could that be? I turn off all firewalls (including the system's); what else? I run Butler, no other third pary software. Anyone had that, or any idea?

Powertmac g5 reset or disable firmware password

How do you reset or disable the firmware password.
Most commands are disabled on boot
Removing battery and memory and resetting SMU have no result.

Apple doesn't use firmware to keep folks from stealing computers.
I was just hoping someone would know. The folks at the Apple store don't know much. They used to call me all the time for help. It is a fun thought, though, dragging this PowerMac a half mile across the parking lot and through the mall, then hoisting it up on the counter.
Officially, it's no longer supported, though.
I guess I'll find another Powermac to use, install this drive in it and install an OS on this drive, then reinstall it in this box and try one of the programs available to remove the password.

Update to Mavericks, Firmware password lost

Hello,
about a year ago I set up a firmware password for my MacBook 5.1 (Aluminium Unibody MacBook, no Pro). I forgot to store the password in 1Password, so now I'm stuck with a MacBook which has a firmware password set I can't reset.
Will the Mavericks installer ask for the firmware password? Or will it just install Mavericks like it installed every other 10.8.x update in the past months?

I know that there might be a chance that Apple might disable the firmware password when I go to an Apple Store, but I'm interested in getting to know if installing the update to Mavericks requires the firmware password or not. "Dot updates" did not require the firmware password, but I don't want to create a bricked machine in case Mavericks does.

Fix for RAM removable Open Firmware Password?

Hello people from Apple Discussions,
I have a burning question that has been tormenting me for years.
Mac OSX is branded as supposedly the safest operating system around today.
What completely astounds me though is that any user password can be quickly hacked, by booting into the Single User Mode where you immediately gain root access.
In my search for a fix I have come across semi-solutions like:
"install an open firmware password!"
I felt relieved, reassured and assumed my problem was solved.
Unfortunately this is bloody useless because one could remove a RAM module and voila! Gone is the Open Firmware Password.
What alternative (other than to permanently glue to ram module in place) is there to this security hole that exists today?

I don't believe Open Firmware passwords are stored in RAM. I believe it's an electrically programmable EAROM. Pulling a RAM module shouldn't affect the security of the computer.
You can take it to ridiculous levels. What's to stop someone from just removing the disk drives? If someone has physical access to your computer then they can get into it and see anything that's not encrypted.

Enabling Open Firmware Password
The Open Firmware password is a security feature available on modern Macintosh systems. If you enable the Open Firmware password, the computer will execute a secure boot sequence. Specifically, enabling the Open Firmware password prevents users from starting up the computer from a volume other than the chosen as the startup disk (chosen in the Startup Disk preference panel within the System Preferences.) Also, enabling the Open Firmware Password prevents users from booting into single user mode using Command-S key combination at boot time.
There is currently no public programmatic solution to setting the Open Firmware password (r. 3075615). This means this setting can not be set by an installer. However, an administrator can enable the Open Firmware password using the "Open Firmware Password" application located at: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/openfirmwarepassword.html

10.10.3: firmware password not working anymore!

dear all,
since the great 10.10.3 my MBP 2015 doesn't recognize my firmware password anymore. What the ****?? I changed it lately, but, and I can't stress this enough: I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN IT! I know exactly what I typed, I also know I put it in correctly then and now.

Sorry for the monolog here, but Apple Support actually found a solution. This might be interesting for all INTERNATIONAL USERS:
Either always or just after an update, the keyboard in the fw-password-mode is set to USA!!! That means, characters like y and z switch place on the keyboard. If you have one of those in your password....well, it ain't gonna work.
But seriously, who would think of that?! Since in regular use, my keyboard works as usual, so I could never notice that. The only reason I didn't encounter that problem earlier is the absense of any of those characters in the earlier password.
But again: this affects only firmware-password!

Setting up a Firmware Password

Okay, so I am trying to set up a firmware password incase my macbook ever gets stolen. According to

with my OS I need to install my startup disk to set up the password however I lost this disk a while back. Are there any other ways to set up a firmware password to protect my macbook? thanks in advance...

Call AppleCare and get a replacement disk set. You need it to:
1. reinstall the OS if necessary
2. run Repair Disk from Disk Utility
3. and a bunch of other things
When/If you sell or dispose of the MBP those disks should travel with the unit.

Safe Mode & Open Firmware Password

I have the Open Firmware Password enabled, which prevents my machine from booting into Safe Mode when I hold the shift key at startup (as expected). As a result, if I want to use Safe Mode, I have to boot up from my install DVD, disable the password and then reboot. Very tiime consuming!
I just read about an Apple Support document about a way to boot into Safe Mode by entering the following terminal command:
sudo nvram boot-args="-x"
Has anyone tried this before? I'm a little hesitant to test it out in case I run into some sort of Open Firmware/Safe Mode conflict.

Try booting while holding the Option key. It should ask for the firmware password, then let you use boot modifier keys.

Can't get past login screen and accidentally added a Firmware password?

Hi, please can you help me.
Up until about a week ago my Mac Mini Server (running snow leopard server) was working fine, but when I re-started my user name and password stopped working (the panel shakes).
I booted the computer from the Install DVD and changed the password. When I restarted this still didn't work. I booted again from the DVD and changed the password again, it came up with a warning about the password also needed to be changed elsewhere.
I had a look round the utilities on the DVD and saw the Change Firmware Password (I know now this was a massive mistake!), so I changed that and clicked add!
Now I cant boot from the DVD as all the Keyboard start-up commands don't work.
I have tried starting up, holding down Command-Option-O-F. This didn't work.
Checked to make sure the Keyboard is working.
I also tried removing all RAM and holding down Command-Option-P-R and waited for this to chime 3 times.
I cant find any thing else to try on the internet.
I think to solve my initial problem, I need to Boot from the DVD and change the ROOT password, somehow login as the ROOT account then change the passwords. Is this right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

If you can remember the firmware password you set:
Boot the computer with the install DVD in the drive (I'm assuming you have the external optical drive, based on your previous post) and hold down the OPTION key. You will see a screen with an input field. Enter your firmware password here, then press enter. The boot manager will load, showing you the internal HD as well as the DVD. Boot from the DVD, and go back into the firmware password utility. Enter the password in the old password field, and leave the new password fields blank. This will remove the firmware password.
If you *can not* remember the firmware password you set:
Open up the computer and remove only 1 of the 2 installed RAM sticks. Boot the computer holding COMMAND + OPTION + P +R and wait for 3 startup chimes. This will remove the firmware password.
Once you have removed the password and are booted to the DVD:
