Firmware Rollback

Like many people here I've been experiencing a racing fan from time to time, generally when something graphically intensive runs such as a game, screensaver or video rendering in FCP, Motion, etc. It's slightly annoying to have the computer to go from a very quiet machine to one that sounds like a wind tunnel. It seemed to have happened after the firmware update late last year.
I've tried resetting SMC and the RAMS but that hasn't fixed the problem. I've run the hardware diagnostic program that came with the computer but it found no hardware failures.
A search hasn't yielded any help with my question: is it possible to rollback the firmware update? I don't remember having this fan issue before. If not does anyone have any other suggestions?

This is normal behavior, for a PC or a Mac with an ATI X1900XT. The fan on the card has a number of different settings that are automagically built-in and controlled by the card depending on how hard you're pushing the GPU... if you're not using the GPU, it's low speed and quiet, if you're pushing the GPU with 3D or Core Image work, you'll hear it. Without that fan kicking in, which is good, your card would rapidly overheat and start to fail and you'd see artifacts on the screen at first and then it'd lock up.
If you really hate the noise, you can replace the entire fan/heatsink cooler assembly. The most popular option was the Accelero X2, which is no longer made for this model but still can be found if you dig around. A report on it:
http://xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/MacX1900XT_SilentCooler.html
With this fan/heatsink, it's a constant speed and so quiet you cannot hear it over the Mac Pro fans (which are quiet to begin with). I had one in my Mac Pro for a while. At rest, like at the OS X desktop, it's about eight degrees cooler than the stock fan/heatsink. Under load, it's about two degrees hotter than the stock fan/heatsink, but *nearly totally silent*.
You can see other fan/heatsink swaps for the X1900XT in a Mac Pro from this page:
http://xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/X1900XTOverheating/ATI_X1900artifacts.html
There you will find links to reviews in a Mac Pro for passive coolers (no fan at all!) and active coolers (different quieter fans) to replace the stock fan/heatsink.

  • Warning: No more firmware rollback? Or from 1.2 it's only forward?

Apple has said this in regards to restoring our iPods:
Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
I have tried using the old iPod updater and now get an error message that it is no longer supported! Perhaps you can get it to run if you don't have an Internet connection, or perhaps it's a registry change, but it no longer works on my computer! So it's only upward from here, apparently. One of the reasons I purchased a iPod was the simple belief that I could roll the firmware back.
They say there is 4 options, I see restore with the same firmware that is on my iPod, or try a newer version. That appears to be it. If you have the next version call it 1.3 you can't put 1.2 back on your iPod. If you have 1.2 there is no way now to go back to 1.0. iPod Updater 2006-6-28 no longer runs after the latest iTunes update.
    DAH

your connection might be faulty try jiggling it or twisting it gently while in the headphone jack.
I stress gently since there are optical outputs in it that you don't want to scratch. if you want true surround get a receiver that supports sound through hdmi or Toslink optical Audio, the latter I know your imac supports.

  • AEpress Completely Stuck Due to Firmware Rollback

Right off the bat, the symptoms I am having is an Airport Express (wireless-N) that is completely stuck in one state. I can't change any settings on it. When I try to access the Airport Express from the Airport Utility, I get error -6722 ("An error occurred while trying to access the apple wireless device"). It happens on wireless, and directly connected with Ethernet. It happens on windows, and on macs, and across all Airport utilities staring with 5.3.1. When I try to perform a hard reset (Hold down reset button while plugging in, leaving it plugged in, waiting for the rapid amber light and then letting go), the Airport Express restarts, but then comes back to its previously configured state.
    In brief:
I can't log in to the manual setup to change any settings
Hard resetting appears to work, but then on restart all settings are retained.
The airport works as configured before it was put in this state.
I was troubleshooting some network issues (which turned out to be completely unrelated) when I tried reverting the APExpress back to firmware 7.3 from 7.5.2. After this completed, I lost my ability to configure the device, hard reset it, or re-update the firmware.
So as a warning to you all, do not revert back to 7.3 from 7.5.2 or else you may find your self in the situation I am in. It still works as I had it configured before the revert, but I cant update it in any way. Totally frustrating!

Aaaaaaand as I was writing that, I managed to fix it. Not sure how exactly. The variables that were used that worked:
On windows, running AU 5.5.2, right clicking upload firmware in the device list, choosing other, selecting a random firmware other than 7.3 (I think i ended up using 7.4.2) and clicking upload. Instead of trying to communicate with the APExpress, it directly uploaded the firmware and then it restarted, I got a crazy amber blink cycle I have never seen before (Three fast long blinks, and the three short fast blinks, repeat). Then it restarted and it was back to normal. Woohoo! There goes 5 hours of my life.

  • Serious Lag with OS4 update on 8gb iPod Touch, help with firmware rollback

    Hey all,
I updated my 8gb 3rd Gen iPod Touch to the 4.0 OS today and now i'm experiencing serious lag with everything. I want to roll back to an earlier OS, say 3.1.2 or 3.2 but I cant find anywhere to download a copy, its like apple force you to update then leave you fending for yourself with no options to download previous versions.
    Can anyone help?
Any other 8gb Touch owners having similar issues? Really not worth it just for folders and spell check...
Oh and Apple should be disgusted at how hard it is to find the link to make your own topics on this site, I'm a fairly skilled user and I was chasing my tail for a good 30min...
Firstly **** this place makes it hard to find how to post a topic

I find it comical that EVERYONE was complaning about the lost of features for 2nd gen ipod touchs, yet even now people complain of lag issues, imagine if apple DID put multi tasking and wallpaper on the 2nd gen.

Haha, I think its because of the logic we are using, cause I am a skilled user as well, and I had never attempted to make a topic here before either, I spent 10 mins looking and gave up lol.

  • There Should Be Software Rollback Option!!!

Is it just me or is there anyone else thinks that there should be a software or firmware rollback option, after all it is our mobile phone. All i am trying to say is Nokia is kind enough for them to give us firmware upgrades why not also a rollback, for the sake that sometimes you just wanna stick with your old firmware just simply because some of your old applications isn't working with the new firmware. Just giving my two cents of thoughts let me know what you think about it?

Not gonna happen as sometimes Nokia comes out with a firmware which will close a security loophole (which I'm told is the case with the latest E90 firmware). So there is no way that Nokia will allow you to roll back the firmware.

  • Thunderbolt firmware 22.1 snow leopard big trouble

hi!, sorry for my poor, poor english.
The last thunderbolt firmware 22.1 for snow leopard crashes in my brand new imac 21.5 corei7 2,8. I got a Samsung 19" display conected to a thunderbolt port using a apple minidisplay port-vga device. Yesterday, back to rebbot the system afther the instalation of the thunderbolt firmware 22.1, the screem tourns blue and enter in sleep mode before the finders appears. I push de imac button for recobery the imac fron the sleep mode ands the finder appairs finlaly but i cant use the keyboard or the mouse for move de element or interactuate whit the interface, is as if the interface was in a lower layer with which I can not interact.
When you restart by pressing the button on the iMac, it happens again. If I try to boot into safe mode I still can interact with the user interface to enter the password at logon. If I try to reinstall mac osx installation from the DVD, I still can interact with the interface.
Finally I managed to restart and boot correctly the finder disconnecting the second monitor to the thunderbolt port. But when you connect it and restart again repeated the same story.
I use mac for 12 years and I never thought of anything like, has someone the same has happened?

I would try the firmware rollback as metioned in this thread. Be sure to disconect any other displays etc before. Mike   https://discussions.apple.com/message/15955429#15955429

  • Reset Did not Erase 1st Backup

Like everyone else there are many initial hiccups. My first backup was done wirelessly. After firmware upgrade everything went to ****.
So I did a rollback on firmware and did a reset. Bought a ethernet cable as advised by many that it is faster and hook it up.
After some hassle, I could find and mount the TC but to my surprise the first and initial backup remains in the TC after
firmware rollback and a reset. Any one has experienced this?
    Questions:
    1) How do I find out if the subsequent backup are done wirelessly or through the ethernet cable? I have both hooked up. Does Time Machine automatically switches between the two if one is unhooked?
    2) Do I have to set "Port Forwarding" in the Linksys router in order for the rest of the computer in the network to read the Mac and the TC? If so, what are the Port numbers?

Try launching AU to get the system to see the TC ,go thru the manual or other setup and look into TC from there. You should be able to highlite backups to delete, then choose the disc tab and try erasing from there? quick or secure, secure takes quite a bit longer, keep us posted.

  • Can we expect a fix soon for iPods killed by the 1-10 updater?

My hardware is a 40 gig 4th Gen iPod.
I have spent 40+ hours working with mine with every hardware analysis tool I can get my hands on.
This is NOT a hardware issue.
The disk drive has been tested multiple time with multiple software tools, both within Windows and via DOS. Chkdsk, Scandisk, Seatools, and Spinrite all show the drive to be good.
I have partially loaded my music files (I have over 15 gigs) multiple times, only to have it fail at about 2.25 gigs each time.
I have used the iPod in disk mode to load large files to the iPod, and again, am usually able to get to over 2 gigs before it fails. I was able to get the iPod to load close to 3 gigs before failure once. Once I was able to get that amount of the drive filled, the iPod was no longer able to mount in Windows, and required a format from a MS-DOS Windows 98 Startup disk to be able to be recognized again and able to run the Updater (I have been using the original Updater that came with my iPod from 7/15/04).
Apple Engineers - suggestions for what the issue is:
    1. Are certain models of iPods now being incorrectly recognized as perhaps a 2 gig iPod Mini, and now having issues reading/writing any information above that 2 gig mark? Maybe the firmware flashed to the Mini's firmware (if it is different from a regular iPod) and is always recognized as a Mini now, even after a firmware rollback?
    2. Did you update the hard disk drives firmware with this last update? Is this the issue?
    3. Every once in a while I get error -69, which has been show to be an issue with Fairplay. Is this issue caused by your Fairplay DRM?
    4. Windows Delayed Write Failures also sporadically occur - but only when over that magic 2 gig mark.
An answer from an Apple Engineer on this issue would be MUCH appreciated by the iPod community. Troll this forum and forums on other iPod oriented sites. This IS a real issue. I've been without my iPod for over a month now waiting on a fix. An answer or an acknowledgement of the issues would be a good start.

    Nope nope, I don't work for Apple - I'm just a Level 3 Discussions pleb...! ;-))
I'd been in touch with the senior tiers of Apple Support on the phone to diagnose the chkdsk incidents of 2004-2005.
Following that, I also negotiated (part-)resolution to the Smart Playlist issue.
Since Updater 2006-01-10 (part-)fixed the Smart Playlist problem, but seemed to introduce some other issues for folks, I've been continuing to pass feedback from my Level 2 contact who is handling investigation of the latest problems. In turn, he is working with US Engineering to handle this issue.
So no, I'm not Apple, but I (and some others) pass commentary to and fro between Discussions and Level 2 Support, and by by-passing Front Line phone support, it helps us to get serious issues investigated and resolved more quickly. I find that such an approach for serious problems works well to help the Community.
I'm not sure if my message gives hope - but I do hope that having reported this on up to Level 2, and having been told that US Engineering have teams watching Discussions, that maybe we can expect some attention from Apple R&D on this matter. However, the official line is for individuals to contact Apple directly themselves via the phone and website feedback, so US Engineering have an idea of the number of people affected. The more people who report to Apple directly, the more likely the problem is to be noticed, and hence the priority for investigation and resolution increases. I can start an unofficial ball rolling, as I have done, but we cannot keep the momentum up unless users use these official routes to let Apple know they are affected.
Sorry it's all a bit foggy, but it's the best I've got! Hope this little explanation helps to clarify things a bit more. Feel free to post back if you'd like to discuss this further. Best for now.
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

  • AE Wireless Not Working w/ MacBook

    Hello All,
I have a very frustrating problem; my AE connects and delivers internet content just fine over ethernet to all the Macs in the house. However, I cannot get the wireless to work with my MacBook. I have reviewed many posts here and have changed to n 5GZ networking only, turned off security, and a host of other things all to avail. I have also done a hard reset of the AE and did a firmware rollback (I was have problems with 7.4). Here is more information on my problem: I can ping the AE (10.0.1.1) but get a 40% to 80% packet loss. I have used iStumber and get a 60% signal strength with 12% noise. I cannot ping anything outside the LAN unless I get lucky but get a 90% packet loss.
Any ideas? This is really frustrating.
    Thanks, Ford

It means the device is unreadable. Probably one or the RAID slices is bad or a drive has failed. Most likely you will need to delete the RAID in Disk Utility, then reformat each of the drives. I would suggest using the Zero Data (one pass) option to allow DU to check for any bad blocks. Then recreate the RAID.

  • N86 Cleanup

    Hi folks,
I've noticed that all my photos recently have tiny little smudges on them in the same place, and sure enough there's dust on the inside of the camera lens. There's also dust on the inside of the screen in one of the corners, which must be coming from the pocket lint.
There's nothing I can do to prevent this, but I guess it was inevitable. Now I need to find a way to clean it thoroughly. Does anyone know of a good instructional video how to disassemble the N86 and clean it out completely?
Also, with the latest firmware the GPS works extremely lousy, it takes ages to get a lock on a satellite (sometimes 2 hours) even with aGPS enabled! And it never stops looking, so say I take a photo and it starts looking for GPS data, the little satellite icon appears on the top right corner, normally it would switch off GPS once it got the data and stored it, but not anymore.
Is there a way to go back to an earlier firmware, or some other way of fixing this?
    Thanks!

Disassembling of the phone..(even for cleaning purpose..) can not be discussed on this Manufacturer sponsered forum..as as per Nokia policy any self service related to Hardware voids the warranty.. Though you may Google for any non-reccomended method..
Firmware rollback is also not possible at user end. May be possible at Nokia Care but it is highly unlikely that your request will be accepted.

  • Rollback firmware (zen vision m 60

    hi guys
im after an opinion as to whether i should risk rolling back my firmware from .2 to . (thanks for posting the link to the download by the way, you forum guys are awesome) in order to get Fm recording. i was all nice and organised when i first got my zen and upgraded to .2 straight away and now have just learnt i've lost fm recording ability. as far as i know theres 2 ways of doing it:
    a) open the firmware file and when the box says it might corrupt music files because its an older version, click 'continue'
    b) reset the player and select 'delete firmware' then put on the old one
just wondering if anyones done this and if it works? im assuming the 60gb model came with fm recording origionally..
    g

ok ill reply to myself (mr popular eh..)
the rollback worked fine so if anyone out theres considering it then go for it, despite saying it may corrupt files. in my case it was fine. problem was it hasnt enabled me to record fm radio (thus all those hours tracking down the old firmware were futile! - except for creating this post of course). this therefore means that despite what some forums say it seems like the 60gb vision m was never able to record fm (could someone from CL confirm this for me?). that is unless of course, i need an older firmware version...
hope this helps anyone out there

  • Why we can't rollback a firmware

I have posted this question about why I have lost my player track on my HTC ONE X but is still not answered.
now my follow up question is why we can't rollback a firmware because you ( Sony ) thinks you have solved a problem for a galaxy note or xperia you may brake on a other device like mine HTC ONE X so now I am stuck whit a firmware that is totally unacceptable and when you ask a question about it you get totally ignored.
So please give us a opertunity to rollback a firmware so we at least have something instead of nothing at all.

Unfortunately it's not possible to downgrade this device at the moment. I have sent your feedback about this further on along with the problems you have reported to have this looked at.

  • Need to rollback firmware on N97 PLEASE HELP

PLEASE! PLEASE someone help me to go back to v11
My phone restarts every 60 seconds after updating to v12.
I don't have time to do hard reset.
I need to rollback the firmware.. but how?

First of all, if you did the update via NSU then try and re-install the firmware. That might well solve the problem.
If not, you need to try a reset.
If the reset still doesn't cure the problem then you need to take the phone to a Nokia Care Point. Only they can roll back the firmware. There might, however, be something wrong with the phone anyway, and they might be able to put that right.

  • Need to know how to rollback firmware - wrt54gs

Hey as you've read i have the wrt54gs v6 firmware v. 1.52.2 and have been expieriencing these internet connect drops randomly so i'd like to rollback the firmware to the original 1.02.2. I've got the .bin file for the original firmware from the sticky posted in this forum but i've tried using the firmware upgrade routine and it told me "upgrade are failed!" so can some one plz tell me how to properly rollback the firmware?

This router had new 1.52.5 firmware released on 3/3/08.  I would suggest you try the new firmware, rather than rolling back your firmware.
If it will not load, use the tftp.exe program to load the new firmware.  Instructions for this are located at:

  • EA4500 Cloud Connect Problem - Can't rollback firmware

Please excuse me if this has been posed. I've searched the forums for solutions ad nauseum without succes.
I have an EA4500 with the most current firmware: Ver.2.1.38.138880 - upgraded on July 27th. I could login to Cloud Connect online for a while, but the other day, when I tried to go to advanced settings, the web page never came up.
I found the rollback instructions (http://goo.gl/tHQYF) but they're not working. Specifically, step 3, entering the IP or myrouter.local fails to bring up the router -- aka I can't get to the firmware to roll it back.  I have done a reset to factory (still has the firmware version listed above) and I've reinstalled the cisco connect that helps set up the router initially.
I would be ok if cisco cloud connect worked... I would be ok with rolling it back as well, but it won't let me. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Robert-

Is the router powered and disconnected from your modem? Yes
Did you do a full reset of the router (push and hold the reset button for 10+ seconds? Yes
Is the Cisco logo status light constant on? Yes
Is the PC hardwired connected by its network port to a network port of your router? Yes
Are other network ports, including wireless, of the PC disabled? No
Is the PC set to either DHCP or has it an IP address and subnetmask in range with the router (e.g 192.168.1.100 / 255.255.255.0)? Yes
As I mentioned, it just stopped logging into www.ciscoconnectcloud.com. When I try to launch it from the 'advanced' settings of the Cisco Connect program it fails to find the website: 192.168.1.1.  I've not made any recent changes to the device.  I do have a USB HD attached, but detached for the reset etc. and have not reconnected, except to try login with it on once.
