Firmware update 1.2.3 still leaves iPod unable to play some songs

I tried the 1.2.2 update and found that a number of songs would trigger a reset of the iPod. This happened most reliably with songs downloaded from the iTunes Plus version of George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album. The song would display briefly onscreen, and then the iPod would go dark, followed by the silver Apple logo.
The songs played fine under 1.2.1, so I restored the iPod to that version.
I just downloaded 1.2.3 and updated to that. The iPod no longer resets, but the songs from the same album will play only a few seconds before skipping to the next one. I plan to restore back to 1.2.1 if I still can. I can't be the only person having this problem -- can I?

Worse and worse. Now I can't downgrade to 1.2.1; and the problem with skipping songs appears to be much wider. In fact, I haven't found any songs yet that will play for more than a couple of seconds before skipping to the next one. Audiobooks downloaded from Audible.com appear to be OK, but AAC files -- those downloaded from iTunes as well as those I ripped from CDs myself -- seem to be stuck in a perpetual "rapid preview" mode. (After skipping from one song to the next several times, the iPod will finally come to rest on one -- which doesn't play. The counter remains at zero.)
I honestly don't think there's a problem with the iPod itself. It worked perfectly until I upgraded to 1.2.2. It worked perfectly again once I downgraded to 1.2.1 again. Now that doesn't seem to be an option.

  • Unable to play "some" songs on my iPod touch

    Hi there!
I've got an iPod touch 8GB with 1.1.4 firmware (with SW upgrade purchased from Apple).
    I've got a MacBook running Leopard 10.52 & using iTunes 7.6.1 (9).
My problem has just started today (Monday). The iPod touch was fine on Friday.
The problem is some songs won't play! Others will play - but eg - 1 in 6 songs will play. The other 5 won't! Not good
This happens if you select by "Song" or "Artist" or even playlist.
If I press play then single tap the album art to reveal the play bar (where you can see the play time) - the playtime permentantly says "0:00".
If move to the next song - and that doesn't play, I'll move to the next. Then to the next - and so on - until a song does play. I've tried moving back to a non-playing song .. but no joy!
All the songs I've got were purchased & downloaded from iTunes. And ALL songs play OK on my MacBook through iTunes.
    I have tried :
    a) Resetting the iPod touch. Power key & Home pressed for 15 seconds. No joy!
    b) Restoring my iPod touch twice using my backup. No joy!
    c) Restoring my iPod touch and setting it up as a new iPod .. then syncing all my music over. No joy!
Apple's technical support after 1hr - couldn't solve it and suggest that I take my MacBook & my iPod touch to the Apple store in London for them to help diagnose it.
Does anyone have any other things I could try ? It would save me a journey to London. !

Okay, I think I've solved this.
Problem: Intermittent, but consistent of songs NOT playing. Attempted to play via Songs, Albums, Artists & Playlists. When the problem occurred - the playtime of effected song would permanently stay "0:00" - move to the next song. The fault had reproducebility of 5 in 6 songs not playing.
Solution. I think the problem was a corrupted playlist. This is what I did - BEFORE - solving the problem.
Restored my iPod back to factory settings.
Setup iPod as a NEW iPod.
Re-Sync copying across PlayLists from iTunes.
This did NOT resolve the fault (Tried this 3 times)
    i) So, restored iPod back to factory settings and setup asa NEW iPod.
ii) NO syncronisation was performed between iTunes and iPod. (The iPod had NO music, no playlists - NOTHING)
iii) Deleted ALL playlists from iTunes. Except the Party Shuffle - which you can't delete anyway.
iv) Created a NEW playlist in iTunes.
    v) Copied a range from music to the PlayList (Started off small number. 1, 5, 10, etc)
vi) In iTunes - specified that the only thing to be syncronsied was the PlayList that was newly created
vii) In iTunes - Sync to iPod.
The first time I did this - it only sync-ed 1 song. I made sure, that the first song that sync-ed was a song that couldn't play.
    Guess what ? It worked!
I continued selecting ranges - and syncing. I made sure that all songs were ok - as I played the first couple of seconds of each song - every time I synced. I have 77 in total. Not much, I know
Not suggesting that you sync 10 of your songs out of 50k then re-check, then sync again etc etc.
What I mean - is try it for a small number. If it works for the first 10 of your syncs then it should work for the others.
Wonder if the playlists are stored as XML on the iPod touch. If so, wonder if it was a case of the XML not being sync-ing to it's DTD .
I dunno. At least my iPod touch is working now. Hope this helps somebody.

Hi just wanted to let you know I solved most of my XP problems with my new IPOD. It won't recognise the IPOD or driver and froze and locked up and then the battery died. After hours of trying different things here is what I did. I completly closed computer down. Waited 15 minutes turned on and reloaded everything. I put the usb cable in but not hooked up to IPOD. I turned off Mcaffee (all of it). After my computer came on. I then went and closed everything I didn't need in the bottom toolbar. (taskbar). I then reloaded the software and waited. Took forever to reload and I don't know why but whatever it worked but I DID NOT HOOK UP THE IPOD LIKE IT SAID! I instead shut down the computer after loading the software and waited 5 minutes and turned it back on. I again waited and shut of mcaffee. It loaded everything fine this time and said new hard ware and drivers detected. I plugged my IPOD in and YES I WAS UP AND RUNNING (THIS IS AFTER 6 HOURS OF PLAYING WITH OTHER THINGS!) I am able to load and play, burn, watch movies, see pictures and everything your suppose too! The only thing I see different than the instructions is I left my usb cable plugged in and when it said to eject the disk I didn't. I also didn't plug in the IPOD (5th Gen) and then I shut down waited and then restarted the computer. I hope this helps others because I know the feeling of wanting to return something you paid dearly for and worked hard at saving money to buy one and it doesn't work. My only thing I dislike about apple is they didn't supply a ac adapter for the IPOD and the instructions say to plug it up when trying to charge battery. DUHHHHHH, ya can't do that if ya don't have one and stores are closed and won' open until Monday! But at least I am up and running. I just hate having to plug up IPOD to computer daily to charge the battery which only last a half a day1

My iPod is not playing the songs that I purchased from iTunes.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • TS1362 I downloaded two cd's last night and I am un able to play some songs cause it tells me I am this computer is unauthorized to play some songs,I did what it said about going to store to get authorized and still will not work, not happy at all!

I downloaded two cd's last night and I am un able to play some songs cause it tells me I am this computer is unauthorized to play some songs,I did what it said about going to store to get authorized and still will not work, not happy at all!  I NEED HELP OR MY MONEY BACK NOW!

There seems to be an occasional issue with downloads from the store. They prompt for authorization when they are in fact corrupt/incomplete in some fashion. Try deleting the problem tracks (do not hide from iTunes in the cloud), close iTunes and reopen, go to iTunes Store > Qucklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer. Select a few tracks to download then click the icon that appears at the top-right of the iTunes window.. Untick the box that reads Allow simultaneous downloads. Proceed with the rest of your eligible purchases.
If you still have a problem use the Report a problem links in your account history to contact the iTunes Store support team.

Try a reset. Nothing will be lost.

  • When my iphone4 is under the locked mode, ipod can only play two songs at most, and then the system collapses

When my iphone4 is under the locked mode, ipod can only play two songs at most, and then the system collapses, the screen is black and responds to no commends,  not until I restart the machine. but the ipod function can work well under the normal mode, is it any hardware problem? thank Q!!

    Do you mean crashes?
Try doing a full reset. otherwise it sounds like you might want to walk it into the nearest Apple Store and get an opinion there.
    Good luck in any case.

  • EFI Firmware Update 2.2 but still old firmware version?

Just installed the new firmware update for early 2011 MBP. According to apple I should get a new boot rom version (MBP81.88Z.0047.B1E.1109091244). System Information still shows MBP81.0047.B1E. I wonder if anybody else has experienced the same and of course if the install went through or not. I did not experience any problem during the update. Power was plugged in, everything happend as it should - except for the boot rom version that still says I have 2.1...
Tried the whole process again and now I get the message that I can't run the update on my system...

Has everyone reported this directly to Apple through Feedback?
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
I have the same result of Boot ROM version reported in System Info still being the same pre-update. However, I have not experienced any operational problem, so it's "no harm, no foul," except I do not know about Lion Recovery.
I suspect if we all give feedback to Apple they'll figure it out and fix it.
    MORE:
Oops. I just went back to the firmware update download page, and the text has been changed to reflect that "Boot ROM Version will be: MBP81.0047.B1E."
So I guess it got noticed.

  • 5th Gen iPod Unable To Play Purchased Videos & Music

    Hi!
Sometimes it's a mistake to update the iPod just before a trip! So I found out as my 5th Gen iPod would not play any of the purchased videos or music I had on it. All of the other music on the iPod played fine and so, too, did my own iMovie videos, so I knew that nothing was really that wrong with the iPod. It just wouldn't play the purchased stuff. Yeah... that's right, the music and videos that came with DRM protection wouldn't play! If it's on my iPod, wouldn't it have been legally downloaded in the first place? Here is the set up: I changed the setting on my computer to allow it to sleep. I then had some problems so I changed it back to never sleeping. One problem was with iTunes. My iTunes would not play my purchased stuff because somehow, my computer "forgot" that it was "authorized" and gave me a message stating that I had to re-authorize the computer. I did so even though I knew that it was already authorized. But.. according to the message I got after that, I now had 1 computer authorized of my allowed five. Weird... but "okay"... I thought... "everything is working, again." But around then, I had updated my iPod and then went out of town for six days, only to find that the purchased videos and music would not play. Oh... like my iPod was not "authorized!" Okay.. This is infuriating as really this DRM restriction software ends up impacting negatively the honest people far more than any fans of the old Napster. This is a fact Apple well understands and the music industry seems oblivious of. So... despite the fact that I have legally downloaded and paid for every piece of music and video I have on the computer and iPod, I am treated like the scum of the earth by having my purchases not work on my iPod because my computer forgets it is authorized! But you know, I am a bright thing and solved my own problem. I thought resetting the iPod would solve the problem but it did not. I re-synced the iPod when I got home, after making sure the computer was still authorized, but this too failed to solve the problem. What did solve the problem was deleteing one of the TV shows and then re-dragging it on to the iPod (I have it manually managed) and syncing the iPod, again. Suddenly all of the purchased videos and music work again. We are back to happy times with the iPod again. But I must ask, who are you really hurting with this silly DRM thing, anyway?

There has got to be a better solution to this problem, which I have as well, than the ones suggested above (no offense). So I'm bumping the post and praying someone can help me out. I'm using iMovie 4.0.1 and iTunes 6.0.1.
Unforunately for all of us, there is not.
    Sue
    BTW-no offense taken.

  • After Defrag, unable to locate some songs, iTunes only - iPod intact

I removed 40G of junk from my drive to get needed headroom; then I defragmented the drive. YES, Files MOVED! Upon connection of my iPod Photo, I received a notice stating missing location of files with a list of 100 items which I browsed and continued.
The update was uneventful (new music). The iPod STILL contained the "missing" songs and the was on the iTunes library affected files. The second time I accessed iTunes, there were NO files.
When I added more music and connected the iPod, The 100 were again referenced. I copied all 100 down and located the physical CD's and reloaded them with the "option" of not reloading the not missing items (some full, some partially missing).
Upon connection of the iPod, another 100 tem list (must be maximum) - new items AND repeats.
I have over 4000 songs in this 60G. If I wipe the iPod clean and the iTunes Library, I'm sure that starting from scratch will work; BUT..... I'm hoping for a better option.

Okay, I think I've solved this.
