Firmware update and iTunes

Hi,
I installed the firmware update yesterday and today I couldn't open iTunes. The iTunes logo just jumps in the dock once and then it stops, it looks active, but the iTunes screen doesn't come up. Does anyone know if this might be related to the update? I can hardly imagine it is, but you never know, right?
Thank you.

Try moving your Dock preferences to the Desktop, log out and log back in. You'll have to put everything back in your Dock, but it may fix the issue. You can find the file in this path:
<Macintosh HD>/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
If that fixes it, you can put your old preferences file in the Trash.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Latest firmware update and more problems with 30" external displays?

    Hello,
New macbook pro user since a few weeks, so first post here.
I'm aware of various issues with the displayport to dual-dvi adapter, especially with 30" 2560x1600 monitors. All threads I've found on are 1-3 years old though.
I got my 17" macbook pro a few weeks ago and I've had very few problems running my 30" dell 3008wfp as external screen. I had issues at times getting it to work after boot up, with blackout and various errors (problems I've read about in older threads), but once stable it would work without issues for days.
Yesterday the macbook found and installed a new firmware update, and wow, all **** broke lose. The external screen won't run at 2650x1600 for more than a minute before blacking out or suffering major graphical errors. Ironically one of the key points in the firmware update is better support for external monitors...
It will run nice and stable mirrored at 1920x1200, but not at 2650x1600.
Is anyone else in a similar situation after the latest update?

  • 10.4.6/firmware update and sync not working? No, .mac is down

I went to sync .mac this morning, and I guess it was the first time since installing the firmware update and 10.4.6. It first said another computer with the same name was registered, then hung. Next time it said it was not registered and proceeded to sync very slowly then exit with errors. After a reboot there was still trouble. Then I thought to check and found on .mac that the sync service was down since yesterday, and remains down.
Funny how I thought my system was acting crazy when it was the .mac system itself that's experiencing problems.

I got my bookmarks to sync this morning, but nothing else would.

Has anyone else had this problem? if so have they found out how to fix it, or is this an on going issue?

    Hi,
Your problem has some similarities to this problem that I reported earlier this month that that still arises every few days. I was thinking that my problem was related to some sort of bug in Entourage, but maybe it's something else...

  • Firmware Update and Windows XP

The Firmware update killed my Windows XP partition. It just hangs when the Windows XP pict is there with the progress bar. It will boot in safe mode tho. Who knows what to do next since I don't know jack about windows, I only use it for games, it's not even hooked up to the net. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi chuckblack,
Sorry to hear this and probably won't help (since you seemed to have already tried safe mode) but I could not get into my bootcamp/fusion/xp after update, until I shutdown down and did a new start. Now i'm sending this e-mail from windows. For some reason the fusion menu now shows two disk options, one labelled 0 and labelled 1. last time this happened with firmware update and the 0 eventually disappeared. As you, I only use windows for a few programs and get out of there as quickly as possible. Good luck.

That is very bad.. how old is it??
The Gen4 TC can die this way.. it is not usual but it happens.
Leave it for several hours to cool off. Do a factory reset immediately when you try to restart it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
Tell me exactly what the LEDs do throughout this process.
Both the main one at the front and the LED on the ethernet ports which should all flash during bootup.
If it is less than a year.. of course Apple will replace under warranty.. 2 years in some places.. Europe .. places with stronger consumer laws. If you have applecare on a computer it should still cover the TC.
I kind of doubt you are going to get this going again... but we can try.

    So far, so good.
One of the symptoms of this issue is an incrementing of the drive's CRC error count.* Back on the 28th (right after doing the cable replacement), S.M.A.R.T. Utility told me my CRC error count was at 6322. From early July when I upgraded to EFI 1.7, until the rollback tool was released (in August?), this was how high the counter had climbed… plus a bit from testing back-and-forth when PU1.0 showed up.
Anyway, 6322 was the count on 11/28/09. A bit ago, it read 6324 (12/05/09). I don't know where those 2 extra came from over the last week, and I'm going to continue checking in on it, but 2 is a far cry from the 6000 or so over a month, maybe a month and a half. And as for user experience, I haven't seen any of the freezing typical from this issue, either.
    * Again, there seems to be more than 1 issue that people have come in here with, but CRC errors was identified fairly early on as a characteristic of this issue, and is one I definitely saw on my machine, so I use it here to illustrate the difference I see.
it seems like only solution is changing the SATA-cable, the problem; it's out of stock at third party vendors. (hot Christmas gift, everyone is buying it), Fishbert how is it holding? give us an update.

  • Firmware update and fans

so i recently installed the firmware update and ever since the fan has been running constantly. its definitely keeping the machine cooler, but its kind of annoying. is there an app to regulate it? thanks.

I hate to sound negative, but if you get a fast processor, it gives off heat. If you want a nice thin form factor with very little extra space inside, the heat can't escape without fans. If the processor gets too hot, it will die.
I really think that fans are a small price to pay for having such a powerful machine. Plus, they are a lot quieter than the fans in my old laptop!
Just how loud are we talking here? If you can hear them from rooms away, you may have a problem.

  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 firmware update and others

    Hi all,
About a month ago my 1 month old 2.4 imac was replaced with the 2.66 on account of noise after the firmware update. I do have quite a few software updates now and I am a bit concerned about updating them. I am also very new to using a MAC.
    1. ATI Radeon HD2600 which updates the firmware ( I have absolutely no problems with graphics)
should I leave well enough alone and NOT update.
    2. Mac OSX update to 10.5.3 (I am not having any issues now running 10.5.2}
    3. Airport Utility 5.3.2 and airport base station Agent (is this what is built into my computer?]
    4 iTunes 7.6.2
    5. Quicktime 7.5
    6 Pro Application Update 2006-02 { I do not have any of the programs that this update mentions}
Has anyone updated any of these same updates and experienced problems. Have not seen posts concerning the Radeon Update
I have been reading some posts about the 10.5.3
Just wondering if I should leave well enough alone and not do any of these. Computer has been great so far.
    Thanks in advance.

These are varied and different updates that you have listed all together; one is an update for the graphic hardware on your Mac, a few are updates to Mac OS X itself and lastly there are a couple which update individual applications/technologies on your Mac.
Do you have a clone backup of your Mac's current situation? If so, with the exception of the hardware update, implementing each update individually would allow you to evaluate the update and "roll back" to your clone if it was unsatisfactory.
Bare in mind that future updates to Mac OS X or the primary applications/technologies on your Mac may well require that these previous updates have been installed. There is the possibility that Software Update will not notify/alert you of an update available because the previous update has not been installed.
I have every update/upgrade applicable to my particular iMac model installed. I have no issues and have never had any issues.

  • Downloading Firmware update without iTunes...

    Hi,
I live in a country with very bad internet... I have an iPad 3 and whenever I try to update to iOS6 with iTunes it always ends in network problems... I've tried it 3 times already and two of those times I got to 90% of the download and then I got a internet oscilation and for a couple of minutes the internet was gone. Thing is the iTunes doesn't have a resume feature... if the download wasn't finished you have to download everything again.
I have searched the internet and saw that there is a way to download the firmware files with a normal download manager and then use iTunes to update the iPad. Where can I find these files and which one do I need?
I have an iPad 3 Wifi + Cellular and not locked to a network.
    Thanks!!
PS: please think about putting the pause/resume feature in the next updates of iTunes....

Links for the iPad 3 :
    iPad 3 gsm/sim card
iPad 3 cdma (i.e. US Verizon model)
When it's finished downloading, in your computer's iTunes press and hold the shift key on Windows (command key on Mac) when clicking the Check For Updates button which should let you navigate to the downloaded file.
In terms of a pause/resume feature, these are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
