Firmware update didn't appear to do anything

I installed the recent firmware update and the first thing that it did was go straight to thinking that there was another monitor attached... the update didn't do anything for me... i thought maybe it would be a one time thing for some reason... but it is still happening... i haven't had any other noticeable problems that other people have had with the firmware update... im pretty sure that i installed the update correctly. this happen to anyone else?

Yes it did, it fixed that sleep problem. Now my MBP CD goes to sleep, but shuts down after an hour, but only when screen is open.

  • Firmware update progress bar appears and computer won't start up

    Hi,
I am on OS X 10.6 (the latest developer build, whose build number I can't remember and can't look up because my computer won't start up) and this morning when I tried to start up my computer, it chimed, the apple appeared but then a grey progress bar (like the one that appears during a firmware update) appeared at the bottom of the screen along with the customary spinner. This progress bar didn't update and after 10-ish seconds, it disappeared and left just the spinner. I left the computer in this state for 4 hours and nothing happened. It still starts up in single user mode (but I can't seem to get Open Firmware mode to load) and it starts Windows XP on another partition of my main HD.
When I start it in verbose mode, it says that my catalog B-tree has keys out of order and it is unable to repair them. Also, I get an error message from launchctl: "Bug: launchctl.c:2033 (23930):17: auditquickstart() == 0". Then later on it tells me to convert a few system plist files to launchd (all in the /etc/mach_init.d/ folder). The very last line says "launch_msg(): Socket is not connected".
I would rather not re-install the system, but if I have to, I guess I will. I appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this problem.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Yes, they (the third-party utilities) both come on bootable DVD's. As I mentioned, since Snow Leopard was just released in its final version, the developers may be in the process of releasing updates.
Your situation is likely to be a case where the data corruption issue already existed before installing Snow Leopard, and the installation process made the problem more apparent (because something critical was installed where it was affected by the data issue).
It is a good idea to run +Repair Disk+ in Disk Utility on the startup volume before installing a major system update. Actually, I do it before any system-level update.
You should also have a backup (at least of your personal data if not the entire volume), in case something bad happens during a major system upgrade. If you were using Time Machine, the easiest recovery would be to reformat the internal drive and use the Time Machine complete volume restore utility to restore the volume back to the date/time state just before you installed Snow Leopard. Then, after restarting from that restored volume to make sure everything is working, start up from the Snow Leopard installation disc, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk+ (just to be sure), and run the upgrade to Snow Leopard again.
If you have a backup of at least your personal data, you may want to reformat the internal drive, install Snow Leopard and bundled apps, install your third-party apps from their original sources, update everything that needs updating, and restore your personal data.
If you don't have a backup, the best bet is to try either DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro. DiskWarrior is very specialized into repairing this type of data problem. TechTool Pro has similar capability, but it is a more general tool with other features.

  • Attempted firmware update didn't work on Nomad Zen X

    Hello everyone,
I'm writing because I attempted to update the firmware of my mp3 player so that it will work with windows xp. I saw two firmware updates available for my particular model so I downloaded the oldest first and started the process of upgrading. After runing the update it said it was going to restart the player. It restarted in Rescure Mode version .3 and whatever operating system WAS on the player is now gone. I'm not worried about the music that was on there because i have it backed up elsewhere. I am just looking to get the unit operational again. It does has full connectivity and when I plug it in to my system it gets recognized as just "storage media." When I try to run the firmware updates now again it says the player isn't connected. Any ideas on where to begin reconstructing my player and furthermore getting to a situation where media player doesn't go crazy every time the player is installed ?

Not that anybody took the time to respond but I figured out that media player was the problem and when I attempted to install the drivers on a pc that had media player 0.

  • 27 inch thunderbolt display blacks out after Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2

Bought 2 new 27 inch TB displays for two different machines and after a couple of days the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 appears on my Mac Pro with one of the displays installed. So I install the firmware update.  Now my display blacks out periodically and I keep getting Graphic Display Errors with a request to sent the errors to Apple. Running a 32 GB Mac Pro (late 2013 circular style) I have three monitors connected (two 20 inch cinema displays and the new 27 inch display). This machine is supposed to be able to handle three 4k monitors or 6 standard TB displays.  I've seen the posts about the blacking out with this monitor but I didn't have any problems before the firmware update and now I've got them pretty regularly.  I had the blacking out problem on an earlier monitor and took one of the monitors back and Apple gave me another one and this is the replacement.  Same problem, but this one only started after the update. I'm hoping someone from Apple reads these messages and can let me know what's up.
BTW, I also have an older 27 inch Apple monitor that ran perfectly on this machine so I'm disappointed that I spent all this money and now get the blacking out issue.
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    Processor 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory 32 BG
Graphics AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB

I have my Thunderbolt display connected to my MacBook Pro and have been experiencing the same issue, getting worse over time.  The folks at my local Apple store did not know what to do about it.  So, I looked around and tried different thing.
The one thing that seems to be working is to System Preferences > Build-in Display > uncheck “Automatically adjust brightness.”
    I hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Boot after Firmware Update

So I just upgraded to a MacBook Pro which came in the mail yesterday. I removed the Apple-installed HD and swapped it out for a bigger, faster HD. I installed OS X from scratch, imported everything from my Time Machine backup during the Setup Assistant, and then started installing updates. Everything was running swimmingly until the last updates.
What happened is when I rebooted my MacBook Pro and logged in after a series of updates, I got presented with both a Bluetooth update and a Firmware update at the same time. Both required a restart so I thought I would kill two birds with one stone. I installed the Bluetooth update, and then when it asked to reset I installed the Firmware update instead. However, the firmware update didn't behave as advertised because instead of shutting the MacBook Pro completely down, it restarted and then started installing the firmware update.
Ever since the firmware update (which I think installed correctly but don't know how to verify), I cannot boot my MacBook Pro. Using the OS X install DVD I can view my firmware version using System Profiler, and the number it is reporting is MBP53.00A.B03.
I have tried booting in verbose mode to try and get a feel for the problem, and it eventually hangs on an infinite loop saying something about not being able to find something on disk0s2.
I also thought I would fix the problem by doing an Archive and Install, but it quit at the very beginning of installing with the error "unknown error".
Also I thought I would format the disk with Disk Utility and then try installing again, but Disk Utility reports that it in unable to unmount the volume.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    -- Update --
Remember how I'm unable to unmount the drive? I force unmounted it and then used Disk Utility to repair the volume, but still no luck.
I think the key to the problem is this new HD I put in runs at 3 Gbps. I think I read somewhere that the new MacBook Pro's don't support that.
I think next I should try swapping out the new HD in my MacBook Pro with the one it originally came with. What do you think?

I, too, have a brand new MBP 15" that I put an Intel X25 in. At the 1.5 (Prior to Firmware Update) setting, it worked fine. I rant the Firmware Update, all looked fine, but the drive is no longer able to be seen.
Flash the PRAM, per other suggestions to no avail. Boot off of the DVD and disk utility nor Profiler sees the drive.
Replace the drive with the stock that came with the MBP (which I had never even used) and it works.
Put the Intel X25 into a Windows machine and it works fine. Reformatted it (in windows) and put it back into my MBP. Still not able to see it (from the Disk utility after booting off the DVD).
Intel's firmware for the drive says its up-to-date (new drive) and if I attempt to "re-run" the Mac Firmware Update, it says that the machine is already up-to-date.
Seems odd that it worked before an now it doesn't. Also seems odd that the X25 works in other machines. And that my MBP works just fine with the stock Hitachi 7200 320GB drive.
Ideas? Intel says to call Apple Support. Not sure what I can say to them.

  • Freezing Imacs: Firmware Update 1.0

    Could this be the cure?

I found out about the update from the MacUser RSS feed. In fact, I was the anonymous user the author referred to in his piece:
Yesterday, in my "Apple bombs the Mac" post, an anonymous commenter opined:
+Wonderful. Now how about them putting some of their resources towards coming up with an improved iMac video driver to stop all of the **** freezing/blue screen/black screen issues we're having?+
Apple apparently reads MacUser's anonymous comments because--brace yourselves--they today made good on their promise to remedy that issue (which apparently still plagued some users even after a initial attempt at a fix), and released a firmware update for some 20" and 24" aluminum iMacs. Apple says the patch "updates the graphics firmware on the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro to improve system stability."
Anyway, I ran Software Update and the ATI firmware update didn't show up. According to Apple, if your machine needs it, it will show up there. They also said that if you download it yourself and try to install it (and it doesn't need it), the install will come back with an error message.
Well, having nothing to lose (I've been dealing with this s--t since I bought the computer), I downloaded the firmware update anyway and installed it.
No error message. It installed fine.
I've been testing the computer, running every graphics-intensive program flat-out and it hasn't frozen yet. FrontRow. iTunes with visualizer at the same time as I made a movie in iPhoto. iTunes with visualizer at the same time as Medal of Honor on its highest settings. Basically I loaded up everything I could, including Activity Monitor, and so far it's going well.
The irony is that this morning the computer froze when I first turned it on, and that was the last straw. I spent all afternoon on the phone with AppleCare and finally got a Return Merchandise Authorization, and NOW they come out with a fix.
Even with this "fix", though, I'm probably going to return the machine. And those of you who are unsure about whether or not to do a return, let me tell you why I'm going to.
When I was on the phone with the Customer Service guy (the TOP of the AppleCare hierarchy; first, basic rep; then, Product Specialist; then, Sr. Product Specialist; THEN the Customer Service people who can actually authorize returns), he told me something interesting. I said that I wanted to make sure I didn't encounter the same problems with a new machine and asked him if people with new machines seemed to be satisfied.
He said, "Yeah, cause they're getting the ones with the new [graphics] cards in them."
"So there were a few bad cards," I said, playing dumb.
"Yeah," he said. "But you won't have any problems now. What I hear, they pulled them."
I'm not saying the above is gospel. All I'm telling you is what I heard from the Customer Service person setting up my return authorization.
The sense I'm getting from all of this is that they know there are a number of machines out there with bad cards, and the reason why the firmware update doesn't install on all machines is that it somehow tests the card first to see if it's faulty. If it is, it does the firmware update, maybe deactivating part of the card or creating a workaround. Otherwise, why wouldn't the update be mandatory for all computers with that graphics card? It's very fishy to me. I'm going to assume that the update merely put a patch on an otherwise bad card and press forward with the return.
Hope my rambling here helps somebody.

  • XAV-701HD firmware update

I am having trouble upgrading the firmware on my XAV-701HD.  I followed the instructions here:
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?upd_id=8518&os_id=99&mdl=XAV701HD
I've downloaded the zip file and extracted it. I've copied the extracted files to a USB drive, so that BIN file is located on the USB here: /update/update/SONYXAV.BIN .I've connected the USB to my XAV-701HD.
On my XAV-701HD, in the Settings Menu under Firware Version, the current Firmware Version is displayed: HR10_xav_1.12.001
When I choose the "Update" button, the "Firmware Update Available" screen appears. It says:
    New Firmware Version
    HR10_xav_1.12.001      -->     ---
    Update system firmware?
Two buttons are below, "Cancel" and "Update".   My problem is that the "Update" button is disabled and nothing happens when I tap it.  Perhaps the new version of the firmware that is on the USB should be displayed instead of the three hyphens (---) on this screen, but it is not.
I've tried placing the SONYXAV.BIN file at the root level of the USB drive and also under the first /update folder, but it hasn't helped.  I've also tried a completely different USB drive.
Any idea what. is wrong?  Thanks for your help.

    Solved!

    That worked.  Thanks Sam!

  • 16x DVD-R Media and 106D Firmware Update??

I just picked up some Memorex 16x DVD-R discs and was wondering if there is a firmware update needed for the G5 Superdrive.
I checked for firmware updates here and could not find anything, but as I have found out in the past, this does not mean there isn't one.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gary

    Thanks for the reply Chris.
Just cause we're level 3 or 4 doesn't necessarily mean we know what we're talking about.
Ah, but the alter I have erected for level 3 & 4 promises all prayers are heard, if not answered....
I haven't tried the 16x media yet, but like 4x media and lower becoming extinct since the introduction of 8x, I am sure 16x media will dominate within a couple months. As such, I just wanted to make sure the new media was not going to frag my 4x Super drive.
I checked my drive through System Profiler and got the following:
    Model:     PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
    Revision:     A606
    Serial Number:     CHDL009866WL
    Detachable Drive:     No
    Protocol:     ATAPI
    Unit Number:     0
    Socket Type:     Internal
I checked out the latest update link you provided, but it does not say what the revision is, so I don't know if I have the most resent. Although I haven't had any issues the 4x Superdrive using 8x, I have had several failures with the 8x burner in a Pioneer 8x DVD Recorder set top unit.... same vender so I anticipate possible problems.
    Anyway, thanks for the response.

  • 2009 Aluminum keyboard firmware update 1.0 keeps appearing

I recently brought my 2009 Aluminum keyboard from home to work to use with my 15" MBP running 10.8.3 (MBP: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM).
In the App Center there is listed an update for the keyboard, the 2009 Aluminum keyboard firmware update 1.0. I have installed this update at least twice, if
not more, and it continues to reappear as an update. The keyboard works just fine with the MBP, no problems at all. Just curious as what may be the root cause, if known, and what to do about it, if anything other than ignoring the update.

Download this update manually and install it > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL997 Then, that upgrader will appear in /Applications/Utilities, so open it, choose the keyboard and it will be upgraded to the latest version available for that keyboard

  • Anybody heard anything about the 5D iii firmware update in April?

Has anybody heard any news about when the firmware update for the 5D3 with uncompressed HDMI out will be released? As far as I know, it was originally scheduled for release today (April 1st), but haven't heard any updates since October.
    Thanks.

The flash problem fix was announced much later and was set for late April.  The original April firmware release didn't give a date.

You're probably right that Canon will screw those of us waiting for the earlier announced enhancements and not release anything until the flash issue is resolved.  The problem with that is, if they insist on waiting for the flash fix before releasing the feature enhancement firmware, they could easily miss an April release if the problem ends up requiring more time to implement a solution...

  • My ipod nano 6th gen doesn't appear anymore in iTunes since firmware update.

My IPod nano was upgraded to the firmware update to 1.2.
I've lost all my music on it during the firmware upgrade (not sure this is normal).
I can't see it anymore in ITunes.  I got some windows blue screen when trying to solve the problem.
I've tried to uninstall-reinstall all Apple products on my windows 7 (following the apple support, with bonjour, quicktime, ...).
I've also tried to connect it on 2 other fresh windows machines, but it doesn't appear either ...
I've tried with other software but impossible to use because the first libray must be created with iTunes.
The iPod seems normal and the screen is reactive ... but I can't use it without any music on it.
I've reset my ipod with no luck. Tried in disk mode also, .... what can I do more ?
I cannot restore it because it's not visible in iTunes.
Many thanks for your help !

Have you tried a reset by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 20 seconds (maybe longer) until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.  Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

  • Automatic Update Firmware Fix didn't work?

I have some graphic pixel glitches and sometimes my iMac is freezing. So I wait until Apple released the Firmware fix. When I installed the Firmware Fix using the automatic updater I noticed that the updater didn't want to restart my iMac - which makes me wonder because I think a firmware update is something to restart your Mac - or am I wrong.
Ok, after the Update I made myself a restart and my iMac freezed withing a minute and I had some pixel glitches on my Desktop. So I moved my iMac to the Apple Store for replacement.
Yesterday I got a call from them - saying that I didn't made the Firmware Fix and they did it now and that everything is working now?? So I ask myself, did the update manager didn't install the firmware fix propper?
To all of you still having problems with your iMac - try to download the patch and install it manualy again - if the patch don't shout that it is installed already - install it and your problems should be gone.

    Thanks Steve,
but what I wonder about is that the firmware update was in my regular automatic update list. I installed the update as any other updates but the Mac didnt restart after this update. I thought this is ok but it seems not. So I think the firmware update that comes with the regular updater had a problem and didnt install propper without letting the user know. At the Apple Store they found out that the firmware update is not installed - I think this is a bit confusing to people who only run the normal updater and don't know how to install a firmware update. So if there are any more people out there who think that they did the firmware update - but the freezing or pixel problems are still happen - download the firmware manualy and install the firmware update again. If the update is already installed you get a message so there is no way to harm your mac.

  • Firmware update 1.0 window appears everytime the MBP starts up.

After a succesfull firmware update the firmware update 1.0 windows appears everytime the MBP starts up.
It says: the firmware of the computer is updated to version 1.0.0. of the Mac Book Pro updater.
Can someone help me to let it disapear?
    Thanks.

No I can't help you to make it dissapear but I would like to warn other users to perhaps wait for Apple to get their act together and create a firmware update that actually works and does not break machines...
After the upgrade of my MBP 2.16GHz the wifi interface will no longer connect to my WPA Personal protected network. Before the upgrade this would work flawlessly...
