Firmware update error - disk can not be read or written to

Just wanted to post a solution for anyone who has this error in the future as I spent quite a few hours figuring this out and couldn't find any threads on it except this link...http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267
What solved this problem for me is formating the ipod from My Computer. Go to My Computer. Right click the drive Ipod appears in (E in my case). Go to format. After done go to Restore Ipod from the Ipod menu item and it should work this time without further error messages. Cheers.

i just got a 30gig and was trying to load it with
music and getting the same message. what finally
worked was unhooking a usb hub and just hooking only
the ipod and keyboard to the back of the pc. now i
have to figure out how to get the rest of my usb
equipment hooked back up so it won't interfer with
the ipod.
Try a powered USB hub...

  • The disk can not be read or written to!

    So this is the setup:
Latest version of iTunes running on the wifes PowerBook under 10.4.X
I’m using a new 4th Gen iPod Nano and I’m trying to sync the iPod to the library. Its gets about 400meg in and then comes up with error ‘The disk can not be read or written to etc etc...’ It stops at the same time every time.
The library is split between 70% CDs and the other 30% is are tunes copied over from my iTunes library.
I’ve authorised her Mac to play them so there should be no issue there (I think) as purchased tracks do play in her iTunes.
    I’ve tried repairing permissions
Restoring the iPod and making sure the FW is up to date
    Changing USB ports
    What else can I try?
    Thanks in advance.

  • ERROR - disk could not be read or written to

I have reinstall software, updated IPOD to 2006 software, restored Ipod shuffle and when I try and Autofill using my own list of songs I get this message: The Ipod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.

I've gone right of iShuffles. Mine refused to play ball a couple of months ago so my wife kindly got me a new Video iPod - which I recommend) and my son's shuffle decided to shuffle off this mortal coild too. I used the online Apple service to get both replaced - really excelent service, replacements to my door and return service too. Full marks Apple.
My replacement Shuffle worked just fine. My son's - zero marks Apple. disk could not be read or written.
No kidding, I've been removing, re-installing, plugging, unplugging... for six hours straight now! I've definitely read all that Apple have to say, which isn't much.
I've definitely stripped out all iPod and iTunes mentions and gone from the original install CD to latest versions - same result. Then just straight to latest versions after removing everything, same result.
When I plug this same shuffle into my HP Laptop - it just works fine, no problem at all. This is what's kept me going all these hours - it MUST be a software issue on our shared home computer. I virus and shareware checked and cleaned, but no issues there. Some mentions on other forums showed users who's startup drive letter was not C: cured the problem by changing to C: but mine already is.
So I'm completely at a loss now. What I am curious about is that the posts on this subject are all in the past few days - could it be an issue with the latest iTunes or Shuffle updater? My laptop on which it runs is has iTunes 6.0.2.23, but that was on the problem machine before I updated in the first attempt to cure the problem. So it isn't the iTunes version. And my HP has the latest iPod updater on it too, so can't be that simple either. And the Shuffle fails on one machine while working on the other with the same firmware in the Shuffle, so it can't be just that either.
There's a story about Thomas Edison being positive in his search inventing a working lightbulb - along the lines that it took him 10,000 failures before he found a solution. At each point he celebrated having identified another way that did NOT work, bringing him one step closer to the answer. So in that vein... I can celebrate about 20 ways I have identified to NOT solve this problem. If it were left to me, we wouldn't have electric light - I'd have given up;-)

  • Ipod cannot be updated, the disk could not be read or written to

I get the above mssg when I try to sync a photo folder with 5th gen ipod. the music syncs just fine and the ipod is "seen" by the computer. i have enabled the disk.

I get the above mssg when I try to sync a photo folder with 5th gen ipod. the music syncs just fine and the ipod is "seen" by the computer. i have enabled the disk.
    let's start with this document:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
given that you're getting this when you try to sync photos, perhaps start by checking on the suggestion in the "Corrupt iPod photo Cache" section of the document.

One fine day, all contents on the Nano disappeared. Capacity 1.8 G, available 172 MB. Cannot update. Reloaded all software. Running 1.1. Haven't a clue what to do next. Had to dig out my CD player. Disk problem? If so, how did it update the OS? Any suggestions?

    Hello EM6
I have the same problem, plus, ipod will not play on docking station, tried two different types. I suspect the bottom slot, but Apple shop said I just need to update iTunes! So how does that sort the docking station probelm? If you have had any answers to your problem, I would be grateful for a reply

  • "Disk Can Not Be Read or Written To"

Alright, here's my problem. Couple days ago ALL of my music dissipeared off my iPod for no apparent reason overnight. I plugged my iPod back in and all the music showed up, but there's no CD art work and I can't transfer songs between the two.
I get this error when I try to make changes in the iPod settings:
    http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b120/MeltedPixel/ipod.gif
I tried to reset everything through the iPod updater, but it says that it can't mount or something. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and the updater to no avail. HELP!

Okay, I'm going to detail my problem here:
    What works:
    Ipod updater
    Software is up to date
Don't want to restore (see below)
Windows reads Ipod, Itunes reads Ipod
First time song transfer was very fast (USB 2.0)
    What doesn't work:
Yesterday, Ipod song transfer was very slow.
Now, song transfer is nearly non-existant. It seems to be
    trying.
Ipod resets itself sporadically while connected.
    Error message from Windows:
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file W: (the name of my ipod drive). The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
I'm tempted to restore, but with the transfer speed as slow as it was yesterday...I'm not sure if I want to risk it. Advice?
Because I'm seriously considering returning this product after the frustrations I've gone through. It took me 3 days to get it hooked up to Windows, and now it's being a drama queen again.

  • Getting firmware update error. disk write error message

i installed the lastest ipod shuffle update and when I try to restore ipod shuffle I get the error message "firmware update error. disk write error" have no idea what to do. ipod does not show up in itunes

ok, someone else with similiar problem, I just opened the box 5 days ago, installed iTunes (the June 2005 version) that came on CD with it, ran iTunes, downloaded some music, plugged in Shuffle, goto download, fails, no device found, can see it under XP ok, goto apple.com to find support FAQ, I then ran up Ipod Updater, thinking that since it was new, firmware must be recent (little did I know ) so I thought do the Restore straight off, it started, then failed with the "disk write error" and havent been able to talk with iPod Updater since, then tried installing iPodUpdater to another PC, no luck, then downloaded later versions of iTunes and uPdater, installed on a 3rd PC, same deal, unable to communicate to Shuffle, rang phone support, spoken to two different support people, finally they agree its faulty (something I figured out 4 days ago) and suggest I return it to Apple for replacement, and fill out a Service Request form, which opened a can of new worms, like there is no "Warranty Replacement" option, lots of questions like Credit Card details and nowhere to actually define that I have a "faulty" or "dead" or Shuffle to return and they obviously did not read the comments, that were requested, as they simply sent docking station in the mail, so now back to square one, trying to lodge a Service Request to "replace" a brand new, dead shuffle. Not having a nice iPod experience here !!, but Itunes is good, although expecting it will take a couple weeks all up before I get a working Shuffle to actually download to. Tried again phone support, to sort out this mess, waited in queue, then line goes dead. Oh Well ... I blame my daughter for this heartache, she insisted on having an iPod.

  • The disk can not be read from or written to?

  • The ipod "IPOD" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to

"The iPod "IPOD" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to"
"The iPod "IPOD" cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred. (-50)"
I have been dealing with this ever since I installed iTunes 7. I had been getting this message with my previous version, but at least the files would load onto the iPod once I deleted the files in the library and reloaded them. Now, nothing works.
I attempted to restore the iPod, but guess what? I got this message every time:
"The iPod "IPOD" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418)"
When I checked drive E on the Device Manager on My Computer, it said the device was working fine.
Desperate to fix the problem, I began searching online for other solutions when I stumbled upon someone mentioning the option to format the iPod with fat32, suggesting that as a way to solve the problem, so I did so. After that, nothing has worked. The device manager now says that there are no drivers for drive E and iTunes won't let me restore the iPod.
I'm plumb out of ideas. What's left to do? I'm not rich enough to just say, "Oh well! La dee da! Let me go buy another iPod shuffle." Is there any way to fix this?

I finally reinstalled iTunes and my 2G Shuffle on my another station (PC portable + Windows XP) and that functions without trouble.
As I followed exactly the same procedure of installation, it's difficult to me to explain differences.
    For each pc :
    - No iPod or iTunes previously installed before this one
    - All the rights (administrator)
    Differences :
    - The OS (Windows XP and Windows XP Pro)
    - A lot of USB peripherics declared on my first PC.
I tend to think that the problem comes from the detection or the declaration of the port usb, but I'm not at all an expert.
So my trouble is solved, but not with a satisfactory solution.

  • Disk can not be read from or written to

This iPod nano second gen is brand new. Bought it today and I put like 10 songs and 10 photos on for my sister and now it's saying "disk can not be read from or written to" and now it's not showing up in iTunes or "My Computer". Help, please?

Is there an error number listed in the message? This would be helpful. You may also want to check for other threads that may have already answered your questions before posting. Another good option even before using the forums is to go to the iPod nano support section and then search through the articles for possible solutions. The links I have provided to some of your threads have come from aquick search of the problem you listed starting on the main support page Support.

    A few things to try:
    • Restore Permissions, using Disk Utility (in ~Applications/Utilities)
    • Set the correct Ownership & Permissions for the iTunes folder:
Select the iTunes folder in ~/Users/YourUsername/Music.
    Get Info (command-I).
Expand 'Ownership & Permissions' and 'Details:'
You must read: 'You can Read & Write': if not, change it.
Click on the 'Apply to enclosed items...' button.
    Hope this helps.

In general, chkdsk errors should be fixed by either running chkdsk, or by Restoring the iPod using the latest iPod Updater. We have been discussing chkdsk issues (as related to buggy firmware) for a while now.
Unfortunately, it seems to be manifesting on the Nano these days as well: Mick Pierce, "Ipod Nano connecting problems", 06:21pm Oct 25, 2005 CDT
Try doing a Restore on your iPod - if you can, it's what is recommended to wipe the slate clean and fix any other corruption issues on the Pod.
