Firmware update on MacPro (running Server 10.5.2)

Hi all,
Has anyone tried this update (daring as you may be...) and can you tell us if everything seems fine after that?
I have just setup a new Intel MacPro box and Leopard server (10.5.2) and have everything running very smoothly and am a bit loathe to run this Firmware updater in case it is not really needed and just screwing things up.
Thanks in advance!
Chris

Hi
I've done a few of these just lately, installed with no problems. I'm guessing you are referring to the Graphics Card Firmware Update? Least-ways this is the only firmware update I've seen for either Client or Server. However I am referring to the latest models.

  • Firmware update made fans run at 100%, can I downgrade firmware?

I bought a 2nd hand PowerBook G4 dvi 12" 1GHZ. It used to run Panther fine. Installed Leopard, ran software update and ever since the fans are on 100% (temps are all about 40 degrees C., that looks fine).
A reinstall and all pramvrampmu resets didn't help.
    G4fancontrol didn't help.
After 10.3.7 added 5 kext files that did something with fancontrol. Some folks removed these and then it worked, not with me.
Even disconnecting superdrive, hdd and modem still makes the fans go 100%.
Hardware test from original cd crashes, so I can't use that.
Problems started after the firmware update (now at boot rom version 4.7.5f1). So I guess if I could downgrade to an older firmware version my luck would change.
    - Could I downgrade the firmware?
    - Where would I get an old version of the firmware?
All thoughts and ideas welcome of course

Hi drrdave and Welcome to the Apple Forums...
You might want to update to 10.5.4 and see if that takes care of it.

  • Firmware Update without Mac OS 9

I have an old Powerbook G4 15" Ti 500MHZ which I've been trying to fix since purchasing on eBay just over a year ago. The machine arrived with a major problem in that it would not recognise it's own HD after restart. So loading Tiger and any new software involved complete shut downs. After describing the problem to an assistant in an Apple shop I deduced the HD itself was the problem and decided to replace it myself with a Western Digital 120 GB Scorpio which went smoothly for a while, however the same problem of not finding an HD after restart soon came back.
Am I right in suspecting I need to update the Firmware on this model? If so, I am stimmied by the fact that I do not have Mac OS 9/Classic installed and this Firmware update will only run in that environment. I have tried loading the old CD of Mac OS 9 I still have from a previous Powerbook G3 model but of course, this won't load unless I have the Classic environment so I feel I am going round in circles: how can I load OS 9 if I don't have Classic and how can I upgrade the Firmware if I don't have OS 9/Classic!
So my question is, how can I strip down all the loaded software and start from scratch with the Mac OS 9 disc? or is it possible to go back to square one and load the Mac OS X Panther discs with Classic on them? Obviously the machine came to me with NONE of the original manuals or restore discs, so it could be this is a hopeless task, so far I have been using the original G4 software install and restore discs from my every day Ti G4 15" 1GHz.
I would appreciate a straight answer to decide whether or not to just ditch this Powerbook. The most recent problem has been trying to load the PCMCIA USB 2.0 card drive, which just doesn't register after installation, I don't know if this is because of the low processor speed of the machine or the installation requires 'restart' instead of the obligatory shut down and re boot I am reduced to right now. The same USB 2.0 card is working fine on the faster machine.
The old Powerbook serves well as a DVD player and for playing games online for my 7 year old. I recently bought eyeTV from Elgato to watch digital Tv and this works well on the faster model, using the USB 2.0 card reader, but I want to use the 500 Mhz as the second TV and I can't get it to load the USB 2.0 software. So that's why I'm trying to fix the thing!
Thanks to all who may be scratching their head with me over this!

Once you sort out why you can't install OS X reviewing Mr. Gordon's links, note that you cannot update OS 9 to OS X. All you can do is install OS X as another operating system. That allows you to either run OS 9 or OS X, with the additional ability to run Classic (most but not all of OS 9) when booted into OS X. Further, to run Classic, OS 9 should be updated to 9.2.2. Search http://search.info.apple.com/ for classic for details.

  • Intel iMac 17"s slow - even after SU and firmware update

Just got 3 Intel iMacs (w/512MB RAM) to upgrade 3 users at my company, and have found basic startup (and later, opening apps) to be cripplingly slow. I have already:
    Run Software Update;
    Run the EFI Firmware update;
    Repaired permissions;
Run Repair Disk vis "fsck -fy" from the console...
The only things I have not messed with are the USB peripherals.
    Any ideas?

If you have the 17" iMacs with the 1.83 GHz chip you don't really even have 512MB of RAM. That model shares RAM with the video chip, which uses a minimum of 80 MB. Leaving only 432 MB, at most, for the Mac OS and any software you are running.
If you are seeing the spinning beachball of death you don't have enough physical RAM and the Mac is using virtual memory and constantly accessing the hard drive. You won't be happy until you have a minimum of 1 GB.
    Get more RAM.

  • Unable to connect to wireless printer or download firmware update

Got an HP C4580 all-in-one wireless. Can see the device wirelessly using the HP Utility, but cannot print to it "Printer is not connected" or see it using System Preferences. Have downloaded the firmware update, but when running this it hangs at the device discovery stage (even when connected through USB) and therefore I cannot update the firmware on the printer.
The printer will print when connected throught USB.
    Driving me nuts!
    Jim

Thanks for the information. Network is not complex. Cable Broadband connected by ethernet to AirPort with an additional AirPort (Time Capsule) to extend the range of the network through the house.
I did all as you suggested, and this worked fine (once) for twoMacBook Pros, and two iMacs, and now won't work on any of these again (one day later).
Am reluctant to reset the printers again, as my print list includes five printers from work, which requires the IT Dept to reconfigure again if I clear them once more.
HP Utility can apparently connect to the printer and give me device information, I just cannot print to, or scan from the printer.
As advised before, I cannot install the firmware update (it may alreadybe installed - how would I know)? It just hangs when trying to seek the printer type.
The lack of wireless printing is driving me nuts. Before the problem arose with complete loss of service, I went through a period of a few weeks where the printer would not connect after it had printed a job, and had to be switched off, then back on again before working wirelessly. Now nothing.
    Kind regards,
    Jim

  • How to install Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 in Lion?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a 27" iMac with a NVidia 7600GT graphics card.  Knowledgebase article HT3986 says that Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 must be installed first. I downloaded the firmware update  but on running it says the Mac OS X 10.6 is required  but I've already upgraded to Lion.
I was able to install Windows 7 but I have to disable the graphics card for it to boot and use it in VGA mode.
How can I install the firmware update?

I used BC 4.0. I don't remember installing the firmware update and thought it likely that I would skip it as I didn't intend to install Windows.

  • OS X without a firmware update?

this is my story and I'm sticking to it....
I should start by explaining that I'm an aging hippie who started on a macintosh in '91 or so, but moved rapidly into the PC world of Windows by '92. I have a bit of understanding of the Windows differing systems from DOS thru XP. However I do lack ANY understanding of macintosh since then.
My primary reason for moving back is one of my sons has a new G5 and he loves it and doesn't have to run all the security I do and it is fast. NO, I'm not interested in an intel mac, all I really wanted was garage band, so he and I could create music. Now we can cut to the chase....
I recently purchased a G4 AGP 400 with OS X 10.4?? installed on it. It still had files on it from the previous owner, so I puchased a new OS X disc package. Went about installing it and I feel it was successful. Sinc then I have had random issues and have been lucky so far in that I have been able to find answers on these forums which is great...however...while browsing thru here last nite I became aware that one needs to do a firmware update to successfully run OS X and it appears that this was not done on the original install on this computer and as of this morning I find that the Boot ROM on my machine is 3.2.6f1.
Now to my question, how do I get the updated boot rom to install if i do not now or ever have had a 'native' system? Can any of you experts guide me?

    boox:
The most critical bit of info with most issues is the model of your Mac. (It would be a good idea to put that in your user profile instead of just "G4," which applies to more than 1/2 a dozen models, for future reference.)
If there is any uncertainty at all about the model, you can use the "Find by Serial Number" search on the Support Specifications page to identify it. You should compare the results of that to "Power Mac G4: How to Differentiate Between Models", & to what the System Profiler app (/Applications/Utilities) says about it, looking carefully for anything that doesn't match up among the various descriptions, particularly for things like hard drive size or kind, PCI cards, etc.
This is important because with a used Mac of unknown history, you can't assume too much about its current configuration from the nominal OEM one.
For instance, this might explain how Tiger got on your Mac without a firmware update: the drive may have been in another Mac when Tiger was installed. It would also help resolve any problems/issues you might have with Tiger on this Mac.
For your #3 question, I think your best bet is to post a pointed inquiry in the Apple Discussions forum devoted to Power Mac G4 issues, with a title that makes it clear you want the updated firmware revision string for your model. That should get you the info you need quickly.
    Good luck!

  • Lync Phone Edition and wpad.dat - using proxy for firmware updates

Our Lync Phone Edition devices seem determined to use our proxy server for firmware updates, even though the server is directly accessible.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there a workaround?
The phones are learning of the wpad.dat file via DHCP 252.  The wpad file has several rules that should be causing a bypass but none is taking effect.   The proxy is dropping the traffic because it doesn't match a rule.

I do not have those options set in DHCP because we do not use these as PIN-authenticated phones.  The phone is registering fine and is learning the correct URL:

Are you saying that the phone will bypass the proxy if it learns the server name via DHCP but it will use the proxy (and ignore the local names list in wpad.dat) if it learns the name via DNS-based discovery and SIP registration?

  • New MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.0 update

"This EFI Firmware Update fixes known start up and wake-from-sleep issues on MacBook computers. If the firmware update doesn't run automatically, open it manually in the /Applications/Utilities folder."
    Just to let you know.

just installed. i've had some serious trouble with my macbook the past couple of months. sometimes, i would shut my macbook and it wouldn't sleep, or it'd take a little while to shut down.
tested it, so far so good. took a little while to install and holding down the power button was a little scary.

  • EFI firmware update 1.5.1

I recently updated my firmware with the 1.5 update.
On the Apple firmware page, this no longer appears, but there is 1.5.1 which is slightly smaller in size and Apple says that when this update is applied, the firmware level will be:
    MBP31.0070.B07
which is where I am from 1.5.0
This is a bit confusing, at least to me.
The 1.5 firmware update came via the Apple Software Update - I did not download it.
On my earlier MBP, I have not received any notification, but this update seems to include the earlier versions, giving the updated BootRom version as:
    MBP21.00A5.B08
Should I attempt to install it or leave well-enough alone?
The link to the update page is:

The firmware update will only run on your computer if it is for your version MBP. If not it will tell you and will not install.
I just checked and my older MBP is a 1,1, not a 2,1 as I noted.
But the fact remains that the 1.5.1 update does apply to this MBP except that since applying 1.5.0, my boot rom version already is
    Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
So I repeat, what's up with the 1.5.1 update? i am reasonably sure it won't install since my version is already there from the previous firmware update on April 9.
As I noted, the 1.5.0 has mysteriously disappeared from Apple's download page.

  • WAP4410N wireless traffic locks up even when running latest firmware update

I maintain multiple buildings, and each building has anywhere between 1 and 4 Cisco/Linksys WAP4410N access points. The problem is that at random intervals, the access points just stop sending and receiving wireless traffic. Every day or two, I have to log into every single access point (either via HTTPS or SSH) and reboot them in order for them to start working again.
In short, here are the config details:
    They are all version 2 hardware (either WAP4410N-A V02 or WAP4410N-E V02).
They are running IPv4 (IPv6 is disabled) and get static IP addresses via DHCP.
When there are WAPs with overlapping signals, each WAP is on a different non-overlapping channel (1, 6, or 11).
Each WAP has two SSIDs (with spaces in their names). One is secured with WPA2. The other is unsecured.
There are two VLANs on the Ethernet interface. Each of the two SSIDs are assigned to a separate VLAN.
There is a DHCP server on the network, so the WAPs do not actually assign IP addresses to clients.
All of the WAPs are running on PoE switches. However, some are gigabit and some are 10/100 switches. Brands vary (Dell and Linksys) and models vary.
Cisco finally recognized this issue as:
CSCtx62203—In certain environments and traffic model, the WAP4410N may lockup after some undetermined time. Workaround: Reboot the device.
As such, the workaround didn’t really offer anything new. Rebooting every WAP ends up being a very time consuming process. It’s awful. And since you have no control over when this issue surfaces and can’t put any safeguards in place, I get calls about it at various points of the day almost every day.
Supposedly the most recent firmware update (2.0.6.1) claimed to fix the issue, but it only seemed to make it worse. So now instead of a WAP locking up every day or two, it locks up anywhere between every 15 minutes to 4 hours when in use.
The firmware was updated and the following issue was fixed in firmware version  2.0.6.1: CSCtx62203—In certain environments and traffic model, the WAP4410N may lockup after some undetermined time. (A protection mechanism was added to guard against sporadic problems with client association that could occur after six to 24 hours.)
As for troubleshooting, there are no error packets. On access points running firmware 2.0.6.1, these messages appear:

These log messages appear on both WAP4410N-A V02 and WAP4410N-E V02 devices.
I noticed that when the “beacon stuck” message appears, wireless traffic locked up 10-15 minutes prior to the message’s appearance in the log, and the SSID drops for 4-6 minutes after the message appears.
Is there anything that can be done to address the issue?

    1) LAN port speed doesn't appear to have any effect
    2) Forcing a connection type doesn't seem to have any effect. This is also rather impractical.
    3) I don't have that option (though there is a TKIP/AES mixed option). Either way, I'd rather not have to resort to using a weaker encryption method.
    4) No effect.
I did manage to find some information about the error message (older versions of firmware didn't even offer that clue).
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Advanced_wireless_settings#Beacon_Interval
I ended up increasing the beacon interval from 100ms to 500ms under Wireless > Advanced Settings.
The wifi analyzer app on android seems to keep dropping the SSID when the beacon interval is set that high, so I might have to adjust it to find a good balance.
However, while it was set to 500ms, none of the access points went down for two days.
[edit]: I reduced the beacon interval incrementally down to 300ms. It started locking up at 250ms.

    Hi msahed,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue with your PC establishing a secure connection to the iTunes Store and the firmware update server. Try following along with the articles below, as they should resolve the issues that you described.

  • I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?

I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?
I didn't see this update come up in "Software Update"
If I was not meant to install this update, would it cause ANY damage at all to my mac ( this is my second as I dropped the first )
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
The bottom of the page I link to says:
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: MM51.0077.10
But when I click on "About this Mac" it says:
    Boot ROM Version:          MM51.0077.B10
      SMC Version (system):          1.75f0
What does the additional "B" mean?
My mac mini is the Mid 2011 Model.
I am sorry if I am sounding super paranoid about this, but I don't want to have caused any permanent damage.

    Hello,
It's somewhere between almost impossible & impossible to install the wrong EFI Update with all the checks it does!
Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Intel graphics
    Macmini5,1
    MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Radeon graphics
    Macmini5,2
    MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
    Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)
    Macmini5,3
    MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Not sure what the B means.
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
No, Firmware is unaffected by any OS change or re-install.

  • Connection attempt to firmware update server was unsuccessful.

I have successfully installed iTunes 10.5 onto my WIndows 7 64 bit laptop. Everything I have tried works, except for one thing.
When I try to install iOS5 onto my iPad 2, I can successfully download the file but shortly after it starts installing, it bombs out and gives an error 3259 and then deletes the iOS5 file so I have to download it again!!!!
I found the Diagnostics thing in iTunes and everything seems fine except the below (normally the activation server is fine when I run the diagnostics, but this time it failed):
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was unsuccessful.
    The network connection timed out.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was unsuccessful.
    The network connection timed out.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Delete contents in hosts file
    2. Deselect the certificate revocation checkbox
    3. Checked SSL3.0 and TSL 1.0
    4. Turned off my firewall
    5. Added the whole Apple domain to the Exclude list on my anitvirus
    6. Added all the iTunes/Apple/Bonjour folders in Program Files, Program Files (x386), Local, Local Low, Roaming and iTunes in My Music to the Exclude list on the antivirus
    7. Tried to run the diagnostics on a second computer, with the same result
    8. Switched my laptop over from my Wi-Fi/ADSL network to my phone hotspot network with the same result
    9. There are one or two other things I have tried as well that I can't remember
I have spent about 4 hours searching the internet, changing settings, restarting etc etc etc and I am about to punch a hole in my iPad and go get an Android device
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can somebody tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it

I have found a solution to the iOS5 upgrade that was being stopped by the above connection problem.
    1. Unplug your iPad from your computer and plug it back in again
    2. A message box will come up that asks if you want to download and install or just download the new iPad firmware.
    3. Use the DOWNLOAD only option.
    4. Once it has downloaded, click on your Device in iTunes and it should start to install automatically
