Firmware update progress bar appears and computer won't start up

Hi,
I am on OS X 10.6 (the latest developer build, whose build number I can't remember and can't look up because my computer won't start up) and this morning when I tried to start up my computer, it chimed, the apple appeared but then a grey progress bar (like the one that appears during a firmware update) appeared at the bottom of the screen along with the customary spinner. This progress bar didn't update and after 10-ish seconds, it disappeared and left just the spinner. I left the computer in this state for 4 hours and nothing happened. It still starts up in single user mode (but I can't seem to get Open Firmware mode to load) and it starts Windows XP on another partition of my main HD.
When I start it in verbose mode, it says that my catalog B-tree has keys out of order and it is unable to repair them. Also, I get an error message from launchctl: "Bug: launchctl.c:2033 (23930):17: auditquickstart() == 0". Then later on it tells me to convert a few system plist files to launchd (all in the /etc/mach_init.d/ folder). The very last line says "launch_msg(): Socket is not connected".
I would rather not re-install the system, but if I have to, I guess I will. I appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this problem.
Thanks,
Kyle

Yes, they (the third-party utilities) both come on bootable DVD's. As I mentioned, since Snow Leopard was just released in its final version, the developers may be in the process of releasing updates.
Your situation is likely to be a case where the data corruption issue already existed before installing Snow Leopard, and the installation process made the problem more apparent (because something critical was installed where it was affected by the data issue).
It is a good idea to run +Repair Disk+ in Disk Utility on the startup volume before installing a major system update. Actually, I do it before any system-level update.
You should also have a backup (at least of your personal data if not the entire volume), in case something bad happens during a major system upgrade. If you were using Time Machine, the easiest recovery would be to reformat the internal drive and use the Time Machine complete volume restore utility to restore the volume back to the date/time state just before you installed Snow Leopard. Then, after restarting from that restored volume to make sure everything is working, start up from the Snow Leopard installation disc, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk+ (just to be sure), and run the upgrade to Snow Leopard again.
If you have a backup of at least your personal data, you may want to reformat the internal drive, install Snow Leopard and bundled apps, install your third-party apps from their original sources, update everything that needs updating, and restore your personal data.
If you don't have a backup, the best bet is to try either DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro. DiskWarrior is very specialized into repairing this type of data problem. TechTool Pro has similar capability, but it is a more general tool with other features.

  • Charger light blinking orange and computer won't start up

My charger on my computer broke a couple days ago so I ordered a new one. While waiting for the battery to come in the mail, the battery on my computer went dead. Now I have the new charger and when I plug it into the computer it blinks orange but never gets a solid orange. Also, the computer will not fire up. Years ago I drained my battery dead and it took a little while charging before it fired back up. I'm hoping its the same problem but it has been over a hour now and still nothing. Anyone have any advise? Thanks

I just came back from the Apple Store.  They think that the Logic Board is the issue and possibly other issues (They didn't say what).
Below is a chart of what they will charge me to fix it.  This includes any defective parts, a 90 day warranty and re-imaging the machine I am told.  This is far less expensive than I can do it myself for.  I can't even find a logic board that is in stock for less than $449.
I will update you if this changes.  I strongly encourage you to goto your local Apple Store and work with them and most of all be polite.

  • Updated to current version and it won't start up. sqlite3.dll not found. Try to reinstall. I have tried many times unsuccessfully. What is the fix?

A pop-up told me to update to the current version. I did. Installation completes successfully. When I try to run the program, open a browser window after installation, I get an error that says sqlite3.dll not found, try to reinstall the program. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling about a dozen times over the last few days, and I always get the same error.

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Progress bar appearing at startup

Every time I startup my MacBook pro a grey progress bar appears and sometimes after that when it loads up my desktop folders don't appear and I can't access finder.

  • Mountain Lion update, and now computer won't start up?

Writing this for a friend, as his computer is inop at the moment.  Hence this message.
He has a new 27" iMac.  He upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago, and then had intermittent problems with apps unexpectantly shutting down.
Now he did a ML update this morning, and his computer won't start up.  It gets to the point of the Apple logo coming up, a progress bar, and then the spinning wheel, but then shuts itself down right afterwards.
A safe boot yields the exact same result.
Any thoughts out there on what he could try to get it up and running again?
Thanks much for any and all help.

Thank you for the fast response.
He was able to get into Disk Utility with the Command and R keys, but when he tried verifying the disk, in red it said 'Invalid Node Structure, volume could not be verified completely'.
He went ahead and verified it anyway, then proceeded to repair it.  Howver, it stopped repairing, said it cannot repair, and that he should back up files and reformat the disk.
How can he back up his files?  He cannot see a way to do it.  Is there anything else he can do besides having to reformat the disk?
This is his first Mac (after much prompting from me to go Mac), and he's afraid he's now lost everything on there.

First reboot the iPad by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the phone by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....
but I would be more inclined to to the factory reset and start afresh.

Do I really have to Reset the iPad?

Yes, you will need to restore your iPad.  This link will help restore from a lost passcode:

Win 7. Download progress bar stalls and eventually cancels itself. Have tried
Tools --> Download Only, but same result. Have been using iTunes for 3+
years without difficulty; I have lots of ram, hard drive and speed.
    Thanks for your input

One step listed in the link to "helpful" info, was (when Iooked 30 seconds ago), to search for and download the newest version of iTunes. I'm running iTunes on Win 7 machine and was prompted to update today, 10.22.2014, and did so without a problem. Having said that, however, it looks as though the latest iTunes (12.0.1.26) is finally doing what the last version refused to do, which is to actually fully populate all my playlists on my 6, but there is a hitch: 12.0.1.26 will NOT allow you to show the sidebar unless you click on "playlists," that is, you cannot keep it open all the time.
And, when plugging the 6 into the computer, the phone icon shows up but clicking on it does nada. What does work, for some strange reason, is clicking on the tiny icon (just under the "Store" menu link at top screen) which looks much like a tiny barrel, someone's idea of external drives, I suppose. The phone then comes up, with the list of stuff on the phone just under it where the sidebar used to be. Sync is now restricted to the lower right of the screen.
Apparently, you will also need to update your iPhone's software as well; some friends with the 4 and 4s, however, had troubles with them after upgrading. The message from Silicon Valley (I can see Apple from my backyard, ha ha) is apparently, "keep upgrading," folks, get rid of those old phones.

  • Mac OS Mountain Lion Shuts down at Apple logo with a progress bar appearing under it.

Last Night there were two updates available which i downloaded and after that it asked for a restart, when i restarted the Mac, it gave me a progress bar for the updates at the middle of which it said, Installation of Updates can not be Completed and My mac book froze. After that i Shutdown my Macbook Pro by holding the Shutdown button for a little while.
When i restarted the Macbook Pro, it gave remained at apple logo for a while then a progress bar appeared after which it shut down itself and it is doing the same since then.
I have got windows over Boot Camp in my Macbook Pro and i can boot into Windows which is running fine and i can access all the data on my Main Partition through Windows as well but i am unable to boot into Mac os Mountain Lion.
I have tried Repairing the Partition by going into Recovey and it Fails, I have tried Resetting the PRAM and that hasn't worked either, i have tried re-installing the Mac os Mountain Lion from Recovery but that says that all my Partitions are Locked.
I haven't got any backup of my data through Time Machine so i was thinking as i can boot into Windows and access the data and as all this is because of the Installation of Updates Failure so there should be some way to manually edit the Boot Files to trick the Mac book into thinking that there weren't any updates or to simply clear the data from Updates.
Can anyone please help me if you have any better suggestions.

If it's still under warranty or with AppleCare (even if it isn't, really) take it in to an Apple store.  If you can get at your personal files from Windows, copy them to an external drive first.  That includes anything you have in Windows that you need to keep.  Sounds like the drive is going south and if it has to be replaced, you'll lose everything if you don't have it backed up.

  • Lion 10.7 gray progress bar appears under Apple logo on startup.  Slow to boot to login prompt or Finder

iMac Troubleshooting topics section shows this topic for SnowLeopard10.6 and suggests that there may be a hard disk problem.  Recommendation was to startup iMac from the 10.6 install disk and use Disk Utility to attempt to repair the hard disk.  Lion 10.7.2 was downloaded so there is no disk to attempt this repair with.  Any suggestions or experience with the gray cloth screen in Lion and a progress bar under the Apple logo on boot up?  It seems to take a lot longer to boot up now to get a login prompt or desktop than when it was fresh out of the box in July 2011 with Snow Leopard 10.6  Thanks for your help!

message appears with that update is required before proceeding

  • When I switch on, the Apple and progress icons appear but it does not start.

When I switch on, the Apple and progress icons appear but it does not start. I tried resetting PRAM, Utilities, everything. It says the system is OK. I even reinstalled Tiger, but nothing has changed.

Given that you were able to reinstall the OS, you must be able to boot from the install disc.
Have you run Apple Hardware Test?
Tried running on just one RAM module, then switch it to other slot, then repeat with other module?
    Safe Boot?
    Checked SMART status?
Run Repair Disk:Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down ckey and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at firstscreen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menuin the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on theleft side> click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at leasttwice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If thatdoesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if thedirectory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or youmay have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directorystructure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quitthe installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications >Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.
