Firmware update/reatore failes

Hi,
I'm stuck with a friend's Intel Mini (4 USB ports) that most likely performed a firmware upgrade which has been interupted. When switching it on, the Mini does a tiny buzzing sound every few seconds but nothing else. There's no video, and the computer doesn't start. Before finding out about that possible firmware upgrade, I tried resetting pram/nvram. I admit that I initially performed the resetting procedure for other version minis (holding down the power button while plugging the power chord back in), which only resulted in high fan rotation. Resetting the pram/nvram with the correct procedure howevever didn't change the no-video problem and the mini still doesn't start up. Following Apple's instructions I burnt the firmware restoration disc, switched on the mini holding the power button till it comes to the sequence of 3 quick and slow flashes, and then inserted the disc. The disc spins up, rotates at high speed for maybe 30 seconds or so, and nothing happens. No long sound to indicate the restoration, no messages on screen. I let it like this for 2 hours, but it didn't restart or anything else. So, still no startup, no video, and now a disc stuck in the drive. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this issue (I'm in Berlin: No genius bar over here). Many thanks!

  • Macbook air is stuck in a reboot loop after running Software Update.  It looks like a firmware update is failing.

I have a first generation Macbook Air running Lion, and just ran software update to get the latest version of iTunes.  It appears I may have gotten a firmware update mixed in the bunch, and now it keeps trying to run the update at boot, failing, and shutting down.
I can start the restore partition, and the system appears to function, but I cannot figure out how to abort this failing update so I can use my system, and determine which update is breaking it and why. I've tried resetting the firmware, but that didn't change anything.
There's nothing, not even a the CD drive plugged into the Air, so it's not a peripheral problem.
I could restore from backups, but that seems like a very brute force way to get rid of a firmware update loader.
Does anyone know how to disable these little beasts?

Restart the Air while holding down the shift key, this is safe mode. Once in to the login screen, login then hold the shift key again. It will disable login items, which can be the cause of startup problems. Remove all your login items from your user accout and try a restart (Note the login items if you need to re-add essential ones later). If it all works well, then keep an eye on third party startup items, they will cause you grief!

  • X3-02 Firmware update, restoring fail

Hi, I just did the last firmware update on my X3-02, it seemed to have gone fine but I'm unable the restore the parameters I previously saved. It starts alright, but stops in the middle of the process claiming it has connection problems, and advising that I restart my device and try again (which I did of course). Is it a known problem? Is there a way to restore my content? Thanks already, JD

  • Computer died and interrupted the Firmware update, now I'm stuck

Not sure what to do, the computer won't start up, but the light is on... no keyboard functions will work, and the screen is black...

If a firmware update has failed during installation and the firmware becomes damaged as a result then there is a way to restore the computer's original firmware.
It's necessary to download certain software from Apple and burn it to CD. Of course this means another Mac (in working order) is required.
Details here: Firmware Restoration CD 1.2
Note there is a small error in instructions 7 & 8. A correct version can be found here: artnum 303469

  • Attempted Iphone 4 update to latest firmware update "failed"

Ive attempted to update the Iphone to the latest firmware update  and it has failed 3 times, the final time it looked as though
it worked but stopped and went into new mode to go-back to Restore to old  setting. Now it is locked up and asking me for the  admin backup password
and everything I've tried is not working..  Not sure what to do at this point.
The laptop I'm using is a Panasonic CF29 and running Windows XP with SP3 installed.
I'm  open to any ideas at this point.
                Thanks Artman

Then it's pretty hopeless. Normally the error message remains displayed until you click "OK", so it's surprising that you didn't see it. You can try the shotgun approach; just try a bunch of stuff in the hopes that it will work. But first I suggest trying to update it again, and this time watch it. The following list covers the most common causes of update failures:
Open a Command window and type the command "netsh   winsock   reset"
    Reboot your computer
    Disable your antivirus and firewall
    Launch iTunes
Connect the phone using a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub
When the phone is recognized in iTunes click on it, then click Restore
If the phone is NOT recognized in iTunes, disconnect it, the hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons for exactly 10 seconds until the screen goes black, then release SLEEP but continue holding HOME while you connect the cable and continue holding HOME until iTunes recognizes a phone in recovery mode
If the update completes you are in business
You mentioned being prompted for a backup password. If your backup is encrypted you will need to know the password to complete the restore; if you don't know it you will have to restore as New and manually add your content back. If it is encrypted you really did enter a password for it once, whether you remember doing so or not.

  • Zen Xtra fails PlaysForSure Firmware update - Now it won't install a firmw

Zen Xtra 40 - Was upgrading from .30 firmware to 2.0.03 to support WMP and VistaFirmware Upgrade to Failed to Complete
Downloaded and ran PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03
It identified my Zen Xtra and started the upgrade, Zen Xtra rebooted and just sat there. 2 hours later I disconnected Zen Xtra and its in Recovery Menu. Reboot says Firmware Problem and goes to the recovery menu again.
If I plug it back into my system it says it found a 20mb 'Portable Device' MTP and lets me open the device but nothing is on the 20mb partition.
If I run PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 again it says I must plug in the device, even though its definitely plugged in and recognized as an MTP device.
Seems like the PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 isn't designed to identify the device after a partial upgrade? Tried older .30 Firmware install program, it can't identify the device either. Device shows up in Device Manager as Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra using a Microsoft Driver.
I've installed the latest JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US_2_0_00.exe drivers and it does not help. Device still detects as a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. If I uninstall Windows Media Player it won't install any drivers and won't accept the PCW Driver either.
Where can I get a firmware updater that will function when my Zen Xtra wants to be an MTP device?I tried another computer with WM9, just PCWDRV 2.0 drivers, and it will not detect and install the drivers when I plug the device in. Says it can't find suiteable drivers for this device.
    Tried Cleanup, Reload OS, Reboot.
Boot v.4 and HW v0.0. Any ideas?

Wow after searching hundreds of documents on this forum I got my firmware updated
!!! I took my notebook, which I had recently upgraded from WMP9 to WMP after I could not get it to recognize and upgrade my Zen. I uninstalled WMPI uninstalled WMP RuntimeRebootedI went to Microsoft and get WMP0 specificallyInstalled it and closed itI ran the ZenXtraPS4Audible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03.exeOn the Zen I selected Reload OS, I click to have it reload OS, while it was doing that I plugged it into the notebook. The Firmware Tool Detected the Device again!!Current version 2.0.03Upgrade will be 2.0.03I click Upgrade!?It upgraded this time!!?The bummer is ALL MY MUSIC is wiped off my device. I didn't format it, but I guess the upgrade does it for you. Which means I just lost hundreds of dollars worth of songs since WMP doesn't have a license transfer and all my music was on the ZEN. So even though I have the files on my computer, they won't play because I don't have the license any longer.

  • T410 battery firmware update fails

    Hello,
Yesterday my ThinkVantage Toolbox offered me to update my battery firmware because of some critical issue. When I pressed on "Update now" it directed me to here. I downloaded a file for my T410 (type: 2537-22G) however, when I try to install it, it fails with a message "The tool was unable to update the battery firmware due to an internal error". It does not work even when computer is restarted and the updater loaded right after the login. I tried reruning the application a lot of times, but nothing helped.
    Additional information:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\BFU\DependencyWrapper\ReturnCode = fffffffb (So I pressume, that it is not able to get a current BIOS version, however the value of BIOS_Version in the same key is 1.28.)
My boot loader is Gnome 1.98
I use Windows 7 and among other programs there is Skype (4.2.0.169), Comodo Firewall (4.1.150439.920) and avast! Free antivirus (5.0.594, virus definition 100817-1), however I tried turning those programs of and disabling antivirus, but it did not help.
    Two screenshots:
    Before installing the update.
    Failed instalation of the update.
    Can anybody please help me?

Has anyone sorted this out? I'm having the same problem with my T410.

  • Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 fails with error 23:3 on MacBook 2,1

I attempted to install "Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0" on two laptops tonight.
    Macbook Pro 3,1:
Hadn't experienced the issue that the firmware would resolve. Installed the update anyway, successfully, and continued to have no problems since.
    Macbook 2,1:
Hadn't experienced the issue that the firmware would resolve. Tried to install the update, but it failed with error "23:3". After the failure, the keyboard was non-responsive for about 30-60 seconds, during which time I assume it restored/re"booted" itself. Keyboard function was restored automatically after this time, though there was no indication that it would return, and I had to suffer a minor sweat. Still, I didn't learn I power cycled the system and tried again, but the update never installed successfully.
    Lessons learned -
    If it ain't broken...
That said, Apple seems to have designed their hardware well enough to be able to recover from a failed firmware update. In this case, you just have to pray a little until the keyboard responds again.
Apple: be so kind, let us know what 23:3 means, and if needed, update the Firmware Updater.
    //

    Hi,
I was just wondering how you were able to get the macbook to accept the update? I had to take mine to apple store and get entire keyboard and trackpad replaced in my macbook. They then told me to ignore the update cause they did not have any other keyboards to replace if it happened again.

  • Activation and Firmware update on ATV 3G failing

    Hi all,
I just purchased an ATV 3G and it is running 5.1. I actually just swapped the unit out where I had a 2G. (Moving the 2G to a vacation home)
So, I keep trying to update the FW and it kees failing. I've tried about 5 times. In each case:
The firmware downloads, It then goes to Step 1 preparing update. The progress bar completes on that Step and then I get a message that the Firmware update was not successful and it tells me how I can restart the unit.
When I go into Settings-General-About it shows the Activation as Failed (Skipped). I am hoping that this is related to the Firmware problem.
After these problems, I put my ATV 2G back and I was able to get it to update its firmware. (From 5.1.1)
After the 2G updated, I then put the 3G back and it failed again. (I used the same power, HDMI and ethernet cable for both, so it isn't a cabling problem)
I have no idea on how to troubleshoot these issues.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

  • Thunderbolt Display firmware update 1.2 failed

Thunderbolt Display firmware update 1.2 fails to complete.  I have made four attempts to load this software update.  The odd thing is that the software list shows that the update has been installed.  But every time I check for updates, Thunderbolt Display firmware 1.2 is listed as a needed update.

Strange. The downloaded dmg file package said that the upgrade was successfully installed, but the App Store still says I need to update. I haven't tried it with my MBP cover open but I'll give that a shot.
