Firmware Upgrade Installs Random Application

I've got an iPhone 3GS and am in the process of upgrading it to 5.0.1 from 4.2. As it did the application restore I have found an 'adult' application which has appeared, which I know I didn't buy or even go anywhere near!
Has anyone else has this?

Try to copy the app to your computer by using "transfer purchases" in iTunes. After that check who bought the app. Check if your iTunes account is set up in the Store menu in iTunes before you start, and that autosync is deactivated in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices.
I never heard of apps being installed on an iDevice without being downloaded after you put in your Apple-ID passcode.

• Driver help with adapter firmware upgrade

I'm trying to upgarde the firmware for my Netgear WG511T adapter. After
uninstalling the current firmware, the Netgear firmware upgrade
installation requests the infamous 'Novell Netware DOS driver disk' -
first thing it wants is "lsl.com" (not sure if I will need others).
I've pointed the installer to the likely folders and searched the hard
drive for the file, but no success.
I have found a couple of Novell drivers files at:
1) http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/13555.html
reportedly useful for my situation
and
2) http://download.novell.com/SummaryFr...d=SUeAaKqKpQA~
the latest (& last?) Novell Client v3.4 for Windows* 95/98
My question is - Am I on the right track ? - thing is, probably
obviously, that I (think?) I know just enough to be dangerous.
I thought it would be a good idea to ask how I should proceed here, in
this forum, after searching for help with this situation and only
finding clues, as opposed to a clear solution.
Thank you,
MB

Alright - just in case this comes-up in someone's search for advice on
the same problem.
Turns-out I did not really need any drivers - I saw a comment to that
effect on another site in my search for tips.
Anyway - anyone with the same problem should just 'cancel' the search
for drivers and continue the installation of the firmware - mine
installed after I cancelled the search for 'lsl.com'
I now have my first wireless network running - and with WPA encryption
- and it is working !
Thanks,

• Has anyone else had random application open on their own after upgrading to Lion?

After upgrading to Lion, I have had application startup without my opening them . Random application  just start running.

Are you referring to startup? That would be the new feature called Resume. You can deal (disable) with it several ways:

• Attempted to Install 2.3 upgrade, installer folder installed into harddrive but application will not open or replace 2.0 as it says it "should" . I have tried too many times now. Always same response.

I installed 2.3 upgrade,
installer folder is in  harddrive but application will not open or replace 2.0 as it says it "should". When I attempt to it just reinstalls the installer, never the functioning application.  I have tried too many times now. Always same response. WOuld love to upgrade ( and purge all the alias 2.3 off hardrive!

when I went to the library folder there was no receipts only
com.adobe.Reader whihc included install.log
so I guess that means something is missing?
If above still doesn't resolve problem - go to the folder named
"Receipts" in the Mac OS X Library folder (i.e. the main Library
not you Users Library) and delete the file named Adobe Photoshop
Lightroom 2.pkg

• HDMI output not working since firmware upgrade

I would appreciate troubleshooting tips for getting the HDMI output to work. I just tried it recently for the first time in a long while, approximately 4 weeks after doing the firmware update to 2.2. When I did it before, plugging in the HDMI cable would automatically start output to my HD TV. Now that is no longer the case. Changing the HDMI output from "Auto" to "720p" does not make a difference either.
Otherwise, everything works well and I've been satisfied with my Creative 7 to date. I have installed several apps so it could be that there is a conflict and nothing related to the firmware upgrade.
Any troubleshooting suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I've received my refurbished device for about a week now. The HDMI still doesn't work either with Zii Video or a 3rd party app MoboPlayer. ?I am tempted to reinstall the firmware upgrade again. Is it ok to try this or is it only a one time attempt?
Perhaps this should be a separate thread but are any of the "Phone 2 SD" apps compatible with the Ziio 7? Whenever I use the "Move to SD card" option, there is still no program moved to the external SD card. ?I have a Ziio 7 with 6 GB of memory as well as a 6GB micro SD card. ?My memory settings are:
- SD Card: total space - 5.43GB; Available space - 5.43GB
- Device media storage: Total space - 2.48GB; Available Space - 2.3 GB
- System storage: Total Space - .97 GB; Available space - .59GB
In Settings>Applications>Manage Applications, the "On SD Card" tab lists several programs lists several apps but none of them are actually on the external SD card.

• "Error encountered: ERROR: Final installdb run unsuccessful" during firmware cop installation

Hi all,
Just a heads up to anyone else who encounters this error when installing device firmware cop files onto CUCM.
We were upgrading the firmware on our CUCM cluster (small - consists of 1 x Publisher and 1 x Subscriber) - running 8.0.2.40000-1
I was installing:
cmterm-7936-sccp.3-3-21.cop.sgn
cmterm-7937-1-4-4-SCCP.cop.sgn
cmterm-7941_7961-sccp.9-3-1SR2-1.cop.sgn
cmterm-7945_7965-sccp.9-3-1SR2-1.cop.sgn
When doing so on the publisher server - it was throwing the following error output (note that the files actually ended up on the TFTP server but devices were not picking up the new firmware):

enablenotify  rc[0]
installdb Failure [-x] 1
loadxml function complete
Failure essentially.
Note that the installation went ahead without issues on the Subscriber servers after we tried on the publisher. I believe this is due to it only copying the files to the TFTP server and not updating the database.
I also noted that the following features vanished from the CUCM Administration GUI (the menus were there but the pages came up blank):
"Enterprise Paramaters"
"Enterprise Phone Configuration"
"Service Parameters" (after selecting "server" & "service" drop down options, nothing was displayed)
Within individual "Phone Configuration" - the entire "Product Specific Configuration Layout" was missing from all devices.
I was also unable to export the 'Cisco Database Installation Service' logs from RTMT - it threw an error to the status bar at the bottom stating "Collection cancelled for node <publisher> due to the error" (and there was no error info output...joy!).
I called in TAC and Roman Kramarski assisted me via WebEx to full resolution of the issue - thanks Roman
After running "run loadxml"
We ran the following command which showed us (after much wizzing by of entries) the list of log files, the 5th or so last file in the list being the log output from the "run loadxml" output -
The command: "file list activelog /cm/trace/dbl/sdi detail date"
Our file in question happened to be called "installdb20140306-230735.log" (like I said, was about 5th from the bottom of the list)
Next we viewed the file:
"file view activelog /cm/trace/dbl/sdi/installdb20140306-230735.log"
In the file, fairly close to the top, it showed the following error message:
"23:07:35.047 |   DOMErrorReporter::fatalError *ERROR* Fatal Error at file /usr/local/cm/db/xml/xml/366X_display_instance-fxo_port_gs.xml, line 56, column 22"
This, along with the output of the run loadxml command, indicated that "/usr/local/cm/db/xml/xml/366X_display_instance-fxo_port_gs.xml" file was corrupted or incomplete.
Roman (TAC) then used the Cisco access to root in order to look at the actual file.
It was incomplete - it ended mid closure of a tag:
"<name>OutputAttenuation</n#"
(Instead of "<name>OutputAttenuation</name>" plus a whole bucketload more output.
Luckily I had a fresh install of the exact same version of CUCM just installed on in a dev environment - so Roman was able to get into that one, TFTP the file out, and then TFTP the new file in.
We moved the old corrupt file into another folder (as we renamed it initially and then ran "run loadxml" which produced the error again) - copied the new complete file into the folder - then "run loadxml" ran successfully.
admin:run loadxml
This command is processor intensive, and may take a few minutes to run.
It should only be run on the publisher.
Some services may require a restart afterwards.
This is a CPU intensive command and will take a considerable amount of time to complete. Do you want to continue (y/n)?
Starting loadxml
disablenotify  dsn[DSN=ccm_super]
disablenotify  rc[0]
xml DSN=ccm_super /usr/local/cm/db/xml/xml
installXml  rc[0]
enablenotify  dsn[DSN=ccm_super]
enablenotify  rc[0]
installdb Success[-x]
loadxml function complete
NOTE that the running of run loadxml did not take that long and didn't cause any outages to my system.
After we did this - the installations went ahead successfully.
After a restart of the TFTP service on each server - firmware upgrades went ahead successfully.
Basically - you can do the initial troubleshooting of checking logs of run loadxml and then pass that detail to Cisco TAC to get them to use root access to copy a fresh version of the file across.
Hope this helps.

Hi Thanks for the information, this help me a lot, I have the same issue but with some differences, because when I search the error on the log file, I saw
08/25/2014 06:14:49.911 installdb|   DOMErrorReporter::fatalError *ERROR* Fatal Error at file , line 0, column 0
message: An exception occurred! Type:RuntimeException, Message:The primary document entity could not be opened. Id=/usr/local/cm/db/xml/xml/ICS77XX_MRP2XX_display_instance-bri.xml|
08/25/2014 06:14:49.911 installdb|<--DOMErrorReporter::fatalError |
When I search the file I couldn´t find it, so I think this could be because I made a booteable ISO from an upgrade from the Cisco Page, so I go to the production server version 6.1.2 and copied the file missing into my lab and run the command "run loadxml" sucessfully, after that everything works great!
Thanks in advance for your time to post this.
Regards!

• Firmware upgrade, then lost

Hi,
Quickly following automatic firmware upgrade on 1 week old Time capsule, network is now lost. Airport set up utility can't find Time Machine .. others experience the same problem? TM feels hot .. perhaps overheated due to firmware upgrade. Solutions welcome.

Your computer came with OS 9.0.4 installed. OS9.1 is required for Classic so is handy to have, and apparently your firmware installer requires 9.2.1 You can use free updaters to update to any later OS9 version from any earlier one.
I don't see any option but to obtain a used copy of OS9. Make sure you get the gold full retail version rather than a machine specific version since the latter will only work in those computers for which they were designed. You can get away with a machine specific version as long as it exactly corresponds to the model and build of yours, but that is often hard to confirm until too late in the purchase.
Note that any drive you want to use with OS9 either for purposes of installing OS9 or for running software will have to have OS9 drivers present on it. These are installed when you format a drive and cannot be installed later without reformatting the drive (and losing everything on it). If your computer still has its original drive then those will likely still be on there unless you reformatted the drive with OSX and did not select the keep OS9 drivers option (there's no harm in doing so and it saves a lot of trouble for doing exactly what you are trying to do). You can can have a drive present that doesn't have the drivers but it simply won't be seen by OS9.
Disconnect all third party hardware (including PCI cards) when updating the firmware.

• Firmware Upgrade and Battery Life?

Since the firmware upgrade on my Macbook in early February the fan appears to be running at full speed all the time and battery life is crap! Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix/workaround available please?

Sounds more like an app stuck processing that shouldn't be....does happen from time to time. Behing hot means it is constantly processing.
To fix:
Try a reboot (described below).
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
A reset/reboot is:
Go to Home Screen
Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.
You may also wish to read this tread about reboots and odd application behavior.

For me, 2.1 works great.

• Firmware Upgrade causes severe slowness and Hangs

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I did do the firmware upgrade, and that caused slowness in responsiveness (followed immediately by that spinning wheel). In some cases, it completely hangs. At this time, I also tried to VNC into it, and it wasn't listening. It looks like GUI and network connectivity got hosed. This happens at least 10 times today.
Any suggestions?

spingineer,
I haven't seen the firmware update (done 2x) alone cause the problems that you're mentioning. In fact, I didn't notice a thing after running it. I DID notice issues when I ran all the updates (machine fresh out of the box and then everything at once). You machine shouldn't be any slower. Make sure you have enough free space on your drive.
The obvious, and often underused, diagnostic tool is to create a new user account and see if the issues persist there. If not, then look to what's running in your login items and your applications. You may just need to repair permissions, but sometimes it helps to verify or repair the disk.
As to the network connectivity. I'd say it's basically a given that a lot of minis aren't good citizens.
What I see is contention. It's like the machine thinks 'oh, someone else is using the connection so I'll back off a bit then try again', even if nothing else is on at all. It could be partially hardware, there are changes in the machines; but it might be something that can be solved w/ modifications to the stack. It's almost like a feedback loop. The more you use the connection the more it thinks it is competing w/ other machines for access and the slower it becomes. Try the usual, zap the pram, repair permissions, etc. There's a good link if you use search to a tutorial that may help you w/ some network connectivity issues on the mini. (moving out system configuration, promoting your primary connection to the top, using the assistant, rebooting and zapping the pram).
As easy as it seems to look at the firmware as the source of the problems, I haven't seen that as the foundation issue for either of the difficulties you are experiencing with your machine.
Hopefully a few simple resets and permission repairs etc will remedy the issue.
Good Luck,
-j

• E71 Firmware Upgrade Step-by-Step (Undocumented Ti...

Although Nokia’s firmware upgrade claimed to be smooth using Nokia Suite, the fact it is not. There are many things which could interfere with the process. For example upgrading E71-1 firmware from 100.07.76 to 110.07.127 is not always trouble free. Based on experience, here are precautions to take:
Before you begin:
• Make sure your phone and computer/laptop are fully charged.
• Make your personal data is backed up safely.
• The BEST, FASTEST and EASIEST way of saving your personal data is making a copy of your phone memory on a memory card. Choose Tools > Memory > Options > Back up Phone Memory and wait until it will be competed.
• Make sure Nokia PC Suite is not running.
Upgrade Process Instructions:
1. Download and install latest “NokiaSoftwareUpdater” http://europe.nokia.com/A4579163 .Reboot if required.
2. Disable Antivirus or any other interrogative software on your PC.
3. Launch “NokiaSoftwareUpdater” and follow instructions
4. When prompted, connect your phone, in this case E71.
5. A 3-step process will start, identifying your phone, downloading latest firmware and upgrading to latest firmware. (a process of 15 min.)
Following those instructions will ensure a hassle-free upgrade.
Good luck.

I have a related issue on my E71-3 (New Zealand).  Since moving to Firmware 501.21.001 contacts I have in 1-touch keep dropping off - not all, just the odd one here & there.  In addition, the group ring tones for the same contacts are dropping off.  Very odd.  Most frequently it is my partners number impacted, which is why the issue stands out to me ...  On start up, I'm now getting a message saying not all applications can be loaded from the memory card - on checking app manager, they are all loaded ... Anyone else having these issues?
iPhone 4 is looking more & more tempting by the day ;-p

• Nokia 5230 - Wish List for Next Firmware Upgrade

heya guys,
I'm using Nokia 5230 with the latest firmware, V 12.0.089.
The following are my wish list for the next firmware upgrade:-
1. Messaging > Sent Items: Please include short cut icons to Forward, Create New and Delete as in Inbox.
2. Log > Recent calls: Unnecessary option for Call > Voice Call.
3. Settings > Personal > Themes > Call image > Theme image: A bug with certain 3rd party theme (e.g. JustBlack - 5th theme). During lock mode, screen is totally blank during calls & alarms.
4. Settings > Application mgr. > Installed apps.: Too much application will cause an error of "Application Manager Memory full"  and auto exit when selecting "Option". During error, phone memory is around 25MB, Memory Card is around 2.5GB/4GB.
5. Ovi Map > Drive / Walk > Set Destination: Please do an icon based UI for History, Favourite, Search & From Map. The list is to small to click on to (when driving) :-)
6. Organize > Please include multiple selections. E.g. Mark/Unmark > Mark / Mark All. Easy to move multiple applications at once to any folder.
That's all for now i guess. By the way, Nokia rocks!!
Thanks in advanced.

Please integrate swype for messaging in the next firmware of 5230. Also kinetic scrolling for messages and contacts. If possible the homescreen of symbian^3.

This is part of the message since you cannot post such a long message in posting.
This should show how lost you might be with your warranty. If you install the Firmware Upgrade .8.02 your player might be useless. There is no way to make it work again. Not really. If you understand what Creative seems not to do. So dear user - buy a new player. If you want to know what the solution is to make your player work again post here. If there are enough postings I will explain it here. Too sad that Creative does not do it. It is their job not mine... But again - I am not talking about a problem what is nice to have it solved. I am talking about a player that does not work anymore. If you do not want to wait for my solution just send your player for repair - it was not your fault that it does not work anymore...
This story with the great support was a test of Creative and will be used in a review. So be not surprised to find it somewhere else.
Here the Creative support story. The first mail is at the bottom. I had to make part and part 2 since you cannot post such a long message here.
To: Creative Labs Asia Customer Support <[email protected]][email protected]>Subject: Re: CLA (CTL) - Technical Support Request - (MuVo TX FM) (KMM7755874I6636L0KM)Dear,I know the solution long time already. I just wanted to test the support at Creative. The problem is real and forces owners of your players to buy a new one since their playes get useless after the upgrade. Not only that Creative puts a faulty upgrade on their homepage - their support is good for nothing. But this was a test of the Creative support. I hardly can believe that Creative is not in the position to solve a very simple problem caused by Creative - what has severe consequences for their customers. But this mail story confirms exactly this. So my advice to any customers - stay away from this company and their products - what is the final result of my test. If you want to know the solution for the problem please contact me again - I am glad to help such a poor company :-)))) For free? • Creative Zen Microphoto - "Firmware upgrade failed&qu

Hi,
two days ago my Zen Microphoto started in "Recovery Mode".
I had no means of getting out. I first selected "Clean Up" and rebooted, still "Recovery Mode".
Then I downloaded the latest firmware version for it:
ZENMicroPhoto_PCFW_L6__3_0.exe
Then I selected "Upgrade Firmware", acknowledged with "Yes", the firmware was deleted, but the windows firmware application said "no player connected" after connecting the player.
Okay, after googling a bit, I found out that I needed to downgrade from WMP to WMP 0.
I (painfully) did this and after installing an additional Registry Key via fixup.cmd the
ZENMicroPhoto_PCFW_L6__3_0.exe
detected the player (hurray!). It showed "Current Player Firmware Version .20.0 " and "Upgrade File Version .3.0".
When clicking on "Upgrade" at the windows application, the blue progress bar appeared and the player showed "Recovery Mode" and a blinking USB logo.
What it did NOT show afterwards was a gear symbol with "Upgrading firmware" (which I found on a screenshot in the internet).
When the blue progress bar of the windows firmware upgrade application reached about 85% it halted and after minute the windows firmware application showed "Firmware upgrade failed!" while the player only showed a black screen with "Recovery Mode" and the green battery symbol at the top.
I also tried the same procedure with
ZenMicroPhotoP4S_PCFW_LB__20_0.exe with the same result: "Firmware upgrade failed!"
Any ideas how to "repair" the player

I have this same problem except with the Zen Vision: M. Any help would be appreciated.

• Avoiding Firmware Upgrade Grief

Assuming that you have a non-UDP (User Data Preservation) phone, like the N95, a firmware upgrade can be a major thrash. Many posts in this forum attest to these problems, but they continue to occur, in part because of inadequate instructions.
Here are some thoughts that might be helpful:
1) FIRST: Ask yourself "WHY am I doing this?" If your aren't looking for any specific fix that you KNOW the firmware upgrade will address, then at least admit that you are possibly doing it "just because it's there." For those of us who have no other Everest in sight, that might be sufficient reason. But, it is a violation of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim. I know you know.
2) SECOND: If you are still going to do this, make the appropriate backups. Plural. In spite of the rather glib advice on the firmware upgrade screen, backups to your Memory Card are NOT/NOT equivalent to those made with Nokia PC Suite. I'll explain why in a bit. Sure, go ahead and do both, but the Nokia PC Suite backup is the (only) one that will be likely to get you out of the woods. And that, only partially.
a. Backups to a Memory Card give you NO CONTROL over what is backed up OR restored. It's all or nothing, and sometimes what's included in "All" is just enough to trash your newly-updated phone.
b. Backups with Nokia PC Suite allow YOU to CHOOSE both what you want to backup and restore. So, backup everything if you like, but realize that you NOT successfully restore a highly customized system in one fell swoop after a firmware upgrade. But you CAN get back the essentials (if you have made the backups). By "essentials," I mean user-created data that you could not recreate easily or at all (contacts, messages, etc.). I do NOT mean specific applications, which you should be able to reinstall separately.
c. What about all of those Nokia Maps locations? Go to your Landmarks application, select every one you might ever want to see again, and then SEND them to another compatible Nokia phone via Infrared. Save them all on the second phone (you can reverse the process to get them back on your main phone). Wait: You are thinking about a firmware upgrade and have no comparably functional backup phone? Please reread item 1) above
d. Did you have to do any MANUAL configuration of Packet Data Access Points? I did before I could get my N95 to work as a modem for other devices. Write those details down somewhere. You'll need them. Same for WPA encryption keys and SSIDs. Consider putting this info in the fields of one of your contacts, so you can later use cut/paste to enter your encryption keys for your APs.
e. Make a list of every purchased application you have currently installed, even if you don't intend on using them again. Make sure you have product registration codes available. You'll need them.
Attempts to do an overly-comprehensive restore after firmware upgrade can cause serious problems such as loss of both 3G and WiFi data connectivity. That should be enough to get anyone's attention. It got mine after the fact! If you make careful, incremental backups of crucial information and are willing to be patient, you can eventually get your system back the way you want it.
3) BACKUPS all done? Too bad Nokia provides no verification process outside of the PC Suite log, but it usually works well-enough without it.
4) UPGRADE your firmware. Follow all of the advice and cautions but don't believe the part about a backup to your SD card being remotely adequate. It might be, but most likely only if you have very little customization and no or few third-party apps.
5) NEXT: Get your basic settings (time, date, etc) right.
6) THEN: Connect to PC Suite and RESTORE only your Contacts and Text Messages. Confirm that all restored.
7) NOW: Insert your SD card and IMMEDIATELY set your own PW for the card (if you had previously removed it). If you had applications on the SD card, some might work, others won't, and you'll probably get an "Installing" message followed by an error message to the effect that the applications could not be installed. Ignore the message to try to restore them yourself from the card. Don't (usually) bother to try to remove them, either, as that often doesn't work.
8) THEN: Recreate your WiFi connections and (if your provider-issued APs aren't right) your Packet Data APs. Make sure they work. Test by using your browser. No point trying to install products which require working data connections as part of the install process (e.g., gMail, Truphone) before confirming that such connections are available.
9) ALMOST DONE: Start reinstalling all of your prior applications. I suggest (if you have the choice) that you put them where they were before (SD Card or internal phone memory). If there are any you want to ditch, go back and remove them after first reinstalling them. That tends to get rid of the nagging "Installing" message.
10) FINALLY: Take it slowly, and set priorities. Put your essential apps on first, and remember that much of your customization probably took place over a period of days, weeks or months. Cumulatively, that might represent hours of tweaking. Re-tweaking will take no less time. Spread some of it out for your own sanity.
What have I forgotten? Probably plenty, and I'm sure someone else might be able to provide other, equally valid approaches, or suggestions which complement those offered above.

Very useful post. However I have to say that all those steps are necessary even if you have a FP2 phone with UDP. From my experience all that UDP does is to screw up your phone even more after a firmware upgrade. It's always better to start with a clean slate anyway

• E90 firmware upgrade problems

Recently, I upgraded my E90's firmware from the version 7.xx to 300.34.84. I backed up all the data on the phone prior to the firmware upgrade - as required for the retention of software certificates and data.
Some of the trouble I'm having now is with the Download! folder, specifically the Applications subfolder - it does not update it's content - actually, it's totally unaccessible. Also, the Windows Live Application no longer works - and I'm unable to download a fresh copy as a result of the problems with the Download! folder. Prior to the firmware upgrade, I had using the Windows Live Messenger application and the Windows Live email/messaging synchronising facility in the Messaging folder hitch-free for about three months.
Any ideas?  Thanks
By the way, I don't think the upgrade in this case has much merit. Other than the A-GPS, there's no real substance in 300.34.84.
Symbian connected me to the world, to my dreams.. Thank-you Nokia

I just saw a post for the exact same problem on an E71. Search 'E71 Download! folder: Service Not Available' by hazz on this site. See my problem is I'm not too interested in the third-party software available from ea.mobile.nokia.com/ea/apps/. I'm interested in the ones that become available in the Download! folder, under Applications. When I click on Applications, the chevron appears, followed by the progress bar, which fills almost completely, then shows the this message: 'Catalog update failed!' I believe my internet connection is working fine - I watch youtube on the device often.
This week, a new link appeared - U2 - Get On Your Boots - which great, 'cause U2 rocks. But, Applications remains dead - even if I remove it from the list and click - Options/Select/Refresh List.
I got around the Windows Live problem by using the awesome Nokia Messaging (email) [http://email.nokia.com], and the instant messaging application mxit. Besides those minor issues, I think the E90 is a pretty awesome device.
Thanks
