Firmware upgrade killed my superdrive

I just installed the new superdrive firmware upgrade using software update, and it killed my superdrive. It does not make any sound (normally it would make a disengaging and engaging sound when rebooting) and I cannot insert a disc (it doesn't pull it in when I try).
My MacBook is 13 months old.
System Profiler says:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857:
Firmware Revision: 0009
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

I did not try to use my superdrive yet (I am scared after reading all the other messages...), but since I got the new download of firmware last week, every time I turn on the computer, I get the following message: "No Update Devices Found. No devices were found that require this firmware update" and then the option to press "quit" is given...
What is that? I am sure there is something wrong with it. It looks like some of those obscure popups that show up on PCs and nobody knows how to get rid of them.... I hope my Mac does not start behaving like a PC...

Hello edspyhill09. Did you reset and reconfigure the E2500 after the firmware update? Also, try to access the router's user interface and check if the 5.0 GHz network's SSID broadcast has been disabled. To access the interface, click on this link:

  • Nokia Suite firmware upgrade killed my 6233 RANT!

I had a perfectly good 6233 which I have had for a couple of years (originally on 02 but now virgin).  After downloading Nokia PC suite (XP) so I could back up all of my info (which I did OK) it told me to upgrade the firmware.  I followed the instructions to the letter but after 10 minutes or so it said that the software update had failed.  I left the phone connected and followed Pschomania's recovery guide but all to no avail.  The phone is totally dead.  I contacted Nokia support centre and was told that the phone wasn't worth repairing as it would be at leat £45 to look at it, so I have gone from having a perfectly good (and fairly expensive) phone to having to buy another phone.  That looks like a pretty good buisness to me.  Break a customers product for them then tell them thay have to but another one.  Well it certainly won't be another Nokia (I have always had Nokia in the past, this is my 6th)...so it's no wonder their profits are plummeting really is it!

Unfortunately the most common cause of failed updates is the computer or combinations of the software running on it.
Firmware updating is a delicate process for any device, not just nokia phones. Sometimes though it is the phone that causes the failure for no apparent reason.
No one can predict when a phone will fail during an update and the updater can't take into account every possible combination of software on your computer.
It's no help to you but modern nokia's are far more robust and the failure rate has dropped sharply over the last couple of years.
If you want your rant to be seen by nokia you will need to use the contact us link near the top of the page.

  • Will the Software Update to 10.4.7 install firmware upgrade for SuperDrive?

Will the Software Update to 10.4.7 install firmware upgrade for a SuperDrive?
I have a Mac mini and I've just let the Software Update run as needed, but I am confused by the number of Apple update downloads listed.
I don't believe I need them, when I just use Software Update?
Seems like a simple question, but I was on Windows for the last 10 years.

  • Superdrive Update 2.1 killed my superdrive, Apple refuses to fix it

Those of you familiar with the issue probably know that there used to be a superdrive firmware update for MacBook Pros. My computer recieved this firmware upgrade 1 month after my warranty expired. At the time, I was in China for school. I recently came back to California and took my MBP to the local apple store. The "geniuses" told me they were unaware of the problem and since my laptop is out of warranty, it is my responsibility to pay for the repair - $310. Spoke to the manager, who explained that he has been working there for a LONG time and has never heard of anyone with this problem. Called Apple Care, told me they can't help me. Got transfered to customer relations, told me very politely that there is no way the firmware update could have killed the superdrive. That it must have been something else that caused the superdrive to stop working. When I mentioned the users on the forum, they said that forum posters sometimes don't know what they are talking about.
Very disappointed with Apple's attitude when an issue like this arises. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. My main concern is not being able to re-install OS X or Windows XP through bootcamp since I do not have an external DVD-drive.

Hi, tbk568. Firstly, you've posted in a forum devoted to the "unibody" MBP that was released in October 2008, and that isn't the model you have. Secondly, there is no trace on Apple's Downloads site of any such thing as SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1. There's a 2.0, but that isn't applicable to any MBP. You seem firmly convinced that everyone knows the apparently nonexistent firmware update "kills" MBP SuperDrives, and anyone who doesn't admit it is less than responsible. But we don't have any idea why you believe that, and you haven't mentioned any supporting evidence or provided links to anything that might shed any additional light on your complaint. So we're pretty much at a loss.
I suggest reposting your question in whichever forum on the page linked below contains previous posts that seem related to your problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=250
I suspect the chances that you'll convince Apple to replace your drive for free are negligible under the circumstances. If you can't make any further progress with Apple or are disinclined to try, then I recommend that you buy an external SuperDrive or replace your internal one yourself. Either option will cost less than a third of what you were quoted for the replacement by Apple, and will enable you to move on.

  • Problem with superdrive firmware upgrade???

    Hello
When I booted my Macbook today a screen came that offered 3 upgrades. One to iTunes, one a firmware upgrade for the superdrice and one more???
I ran the upgrade and re-booted. The problem is now I get a message with every re-boot saying that there no such drive to be upograded?? And I have to cancel.
    Help?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Just go to System Preferences, Accounts, Login Items and select the SuperDrive update and then click the minus in the lower left side of the panel. That will turn it off and keep it from starting each time you start your computer.
Or, you can go into Utilities and drag the SuperDrive Updater icon into the trash. It won't hurt anything, once the update is finished, you don't really need the application anymore, AFAIK.

  • SPA112 firmware upgrade from 1.0.1 to 1.2.1 kills the SPA

I took a brand-new, unconfigured SPA112 out of the box, plugged it into DHCP-enabled network, noted it was running v1.0.1 firmware and attempted a firmware upgrade to 1.2.1 via the web management utility.
After reporting a successful upgrade there was no further response from the SPA112 to HTTP requests, neither was there any response to pings. ARP requests are responded to successfully. The IVR works (as well as the IVR ever works) until I selected to perform a factory reboot at which point the IVR stopped responding as well. Holding the reset button for 20sec does nothing useful. It's dead, Jim.
I've had this experience on another SPA112 as well under similar circumstances although there is nothing in the Release Notes for v1.2.1 to say that such an upgrade does not work.
    My questions:
1)Is there any way of recovering these devices or do I need to send them back to Cisco?
    2) How am I supposed to perform such a firmware upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
I tried upgrading the firmware upgrade from v1.0.1 to v 1.2.1 and I had the same problem. The device just stopped responding. I tried that in a lab and I figured out what exactly to do when you get in to a problem like that. So lets start off once again.
Snce SPA112 must get an IP first through a DHCP on WAN port. Connect the SPA 112 device according to the instructins told in this article till the step 3.
    http://www6.nohold.net/CiscoSB/Loginr.aspx?login=1&pid=4&app=search&vw=1&articleid=2775
Once you access the web GUI of SPA112 follow the contents of the following article and upgrade the firmware
    http://www6.nohold.net/CiscoSB/Loginr.aspx?login=1&pid=4&app=search&vw=1&articleid=2676
In your case I believe the window got stucked at the point when it says "The upgrade is successful" and then there was no further response to HTTP requests.
Restart the device and see if it works or not. If it does not then log in to the router web GUI and navigate to the ARP table and see what are the VLAN assigned to the IP address.
NOTE: Both the router and SPA should be in the same VLAN. This way only the device will respond to the HTTP requests. If they are in a different VLAN's, navigate to the VLAN and disable the LAN memberships. For example there are two VLAN ID 1 and 100. Disable the LAN ports for the ID 100 and only enable it for 1.
Navigate to the ARP table again and refresh it. Both the IP addresses should be in the same VLAN. If yes. Access the SPA112 with an IP address assigned to it again and navigate to Administration > Firmware Upgrade. You will see the firmware of the device has been upgraded.
(optional) Upgrade the firmware again. This time, it will go through and the device will restart.
Let me know if you still need any help.

  • Can 10.5 Upgrade Kill a Powerbook G4?

    Hello,
Powerbook G4 1Ghz, 1GB memory - was running 10.4.10 with no problems. Tried to upgrade to 10.5. I could never get the upgrade to finish (kernel panics, core dumps, etc.). Tried every option, including a complete erase of the hard drive and fresh install. The upgrade would always crash mid-way through. Finally gave up and decided to go back to 10.4.
Now I can't even get the 10.4 install to work. It crashes too (kernel panic). I've erased the disk several times including a complete wipe using disk utility.
I've done the alt-option-P-R reset several times and have also reset the PMU. Nothing works.
Is it possible that the 10.5 upgrade killed my machine or is it just a coincidence? The machine is pretty old.
    Any suggestions welcomed.
btw, is this something that the Genius Bar at an Apple Store could fix for a fee?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Yes. Leopard can damage hardware. See my long-winded post here.
It ***. Out of Applecare, and new logic boards cost as much as your lappy goes for on Craigslist. I hardly think Apple will pony up to fix our hardware - or admit to it.
Before giving up, I'd try an open firmware reset.
    option-apple-O-F
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
That took care of mine. Of course, it didn't live much longer after that. You may have better luck.
I'd run the Apple Hardware Test (hold down option while booting from your original install disks that came with it) a bunch of times, and see what you come up with.

  • Time Capsule firmware upgrade interfering with VPN connection?

I regularly connect to our corporate VPN with my (corporate, non-Apple) laptop through wi-fi through our Time Capsule.  I think that the recent firmware upgrade to the Time Capsule has made it impossible for me to connect to the VPN.  My IT department suggests that the upgrade may have tightened a security setting that is preventing the VPN connection.  Is this something others have experienced?  Is there anything to do about it?  (At the moment, I am connecting to the VPN through my iPhone as a hotspot, but I'll use up my data allowance if I keep doing that.)

Yes, it is common.. Apple only bother to check their software requirements.. not everybody elses.
VPN in particular seems to suffer from being killed off on about every second firmware revision. Woopss forget about that..
Is there anything to do about it?
Absolutely.. take your TC back to the last firmware that worked.. a Gen1 I would strongly recommend 7.5.2 but 7.6.1 is not bad.. avoid the rest.
Downgrade firmware is easy in v6 utiity.
Click on the version number with the option key held down.. lo and behold.. all the old versions will appear .. pick a goodun and it will proceed to downgrade that is an upgrade in functionality.. at least as far as your VPN is concerned.. very little else is going to be affected.
V6 utility does allow you to turn off checking for updates .. I just found it.
On the top menu area open preferences for airport utility..
Uncheck the first two items.. check for updates and check for updates weekly.
Do not even dream that this will stop it complaining about updates.. because it will still manage to complain.. but less often.. and you MUST ignore it.. for your own good.
Are you sure your port forwarding is still functional and is the laptop or whatever you are using getting the right IP. If IP changes the VPN will no longer work.. but I think port forwarding has become more problematic as v6 utility has made it harder.
Sometimes as part of this process you should also factory reset.. old firmware or new firmware and redo the port forwards again.
It is also much easier to simply use a router that understands vpn.

  • IPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail

*iPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail*
Ok, I upgraded to 4.2 and deleted all previous backups, so I know I'm screwed untill the next update.
I've synced, backed up, restored from backup and still no "Visual Voicemail".
My voicemail only works if I restore the phone to original settings. But if I do that, I loose important data in my apps. As soon as I "Restore From Backup" I loose my "Visual Voicemail".
If I reset my voicemail password with AT&T, I get the screen to set up a new password and greeting in Visual Voicemail. When I go through these steps I get the spinning wheel "Saving".
It never saves, and I get an alert that says it can't connect to voicemail.
I can set up voicemail by dialing "1", but then all I see is a blank screen in my "Visual Voicemail".
I've also tried a full reset of my voicemail with AT&T.
I even got a new SIM card. That didn't work.
Can anybody figure this one out???
    -Thanks

Well, thats the first time I've been told that after a week of phone calls. Maybe it's possible.
I forgot to backup my phone before I upgraded to 4.2. Oops!
When I noticed my Visual Voicemail was gone I tried to backup but ran out of memory.
So I deleted previous backups to make more room. It backed up fine after that.
I don't think it ran out of memory during the update, but maybe it did.
    Crap!

    What should I try next?

Since my last post I’ve retried the same troubleshooting described before, this time just from the PC.  The result is still the same.  Lights on the cp1025nw indicate “fatal error”.
Does anyone know how to put this printer into ‘bootcode’ mode?  I’ve read about this in some other posts about HP firmware updates trashing printers.

  • HDMI output not working since firmware upgrade

I would appreciate troubleshooting tips for getting the HDMI output to work. I just tried it recently for the first time in a long while, approximately 4 weeks after doing the firmware update to 2.2. When I did it before, plugging in the HDMI cable would automatically start output to my HD TV. Now that is no longer the case. Changing the HDMI output from "Auto" to "720p" does not make a difference either.
Otherwise, everything works well and I've been satisfied with my Creative 7 to date. I have installed several apps so it could be that there is a conflict and nothing related to the firmware upgrade.
Any troubleshooting suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I've received my refurbished device for about a week now. The HDMI still doesn't work either with Zii Video or a 3rd party app MoboPlayer. ?I am tempted to reinstall the firmware upgrade again. Is it ok to try this or is it only a one time attempt?
Perhaps this should be a separate thread but are any of the "Phone 2 SD" apps compatible with the Ziio 7? Whenever I use the "Move to SD card" option, there is still no program moved to the external SD card. ?I have a Ziio 7 with 6 GB of memory as well as a 6GB micro SD card. ?My memory settings are:
    - SD Card: total space - 5.43GB; Available space - 5.43GB
    - Device media storage: Total space - 2.48GB; Available Space - 2.3 GB
    - System storage: Total Space - .97 GB; Available space - .59GB
In Settings>Applications>Manage Applications, the "On SD Card" tab lists several programs lists several apps but none of them are actually on the external SD card.

  • Sky Router firmware upgraded - can no longer login with credentials

I usually have no problems accessing my sky router (white Sky Hub with ADSL) via the page 192.168.0.1 however I tried to login the other day and was greeted with an updated looking summary screen - all very nice I thought, let's go and explore! However when I put in the usual details - username: admin, password: sky I get prompted to input my details again which is very odd. Now I know that I am the only one who accesses the router in this way as my flatmate has never logged in and probably never will so I can only assume the firmware upgrade has caused the password/username to change. I logged in the other week and the password is saved in my browser so I am sure I am not making any mistake here. I have tried in chrome and IE just in case but I have the same issue in both. Has the new firmware brought a new default password? I cannot find any reference to this anywhere on this site so it seems unlikely. I would rather not reset my router to default settings as I have devices with static IP addresses and port forwarding setup that will take me some time to reconfigure. I don't think there is any feature to backup the config unless you are actually logged in to the router but would love to be worng about this. I am guessing I will have to bite the bullet and reset to factory defaults but would welcome any help or suggestions if possible?

After review the events of the morning.....
I normally keep my routers in the basement where my eth jacks all hub.  High on a shelf, I got reasonable coverage on 2.4Ghz even on the second floor.  I went to this router for the Dual mode, but found the 5Ghz didn't make it sufficiently well to the second floor.  So it was moved to the first floor, on a counter.  That morning the router started acting up a bit, not bringing an iphone online.  It was looked at - and a couple of post cards that had been placed on top, removed.  Air flow was not blocked around the sides in any way - just a few pieces of card stock on top to interfere with convection off the top.
    1.  There is no way to look at temperature - maybe the device doesn't even know its own temp.
    2.  There is no fan that I can discern.  Clearly, creating a device that is designed to sit on a flat surface in a home environment ought to take into consideration "normal impediments to air flow".   Temp controlled fans is simple, well proven tech.
    3.  This design is small, has TWO radios, sits horizonal (thus is going to have lousy convection) - seems to me an engineer ought to have given more thought to not only providing the user with easy to obtain data (temp), alternative methods (fan/vertical mounting) and/or self-protection (to hot, I'm shutting down rather than corrupt my database).
Having spent millions on Cisco gear in my career, I would have hoped that Cisco+Linksys would have a little more Cisco and a little less Linksys.
