First Aid Failed while trying to re-start mac, help??

My Mac has been forzen to the loading page and I have put in the grey disk to try and re-boot it and I was told to repair the disk once the CD was in. After having gone through part of the repair process I get a message of First Aid Failed because "The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" Any help on how to get my mac fixed?? And wil it involve losing all of my files on my Mac? Thanks!!

The error you are getting means that Disk Utility cannot repair your hard drive. Apple has a note on this at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302411 . Net, most people buy Disk Warrior to repair the drive, although TechTool Pro can also be bought to do that, and in most cases, Disk Warrior is able to fix the drive. There are situations, however, when they can't repair the drive. At that point, you can try and erase and install, and if that fails, you need to buy a new hard drive.
If you can hook another mac up in target mode you may be able to back up your data, if you haven't done that recently.

    Was verifying and then repairing disk permissions then got this message:

    Should I be concerned?

    Start up in Safe mode - Hold Shift key at startup until halfway through the rotating gear. You will have to login. Then reboot the Mac to see if that fixed it.
    Safe boot will take 2-3 times as long as normal, so be patient.

    You should be able to install Mac OS X 10.7 or later on your 2011 MacBook Pro without issue, if it came with 10.6.3 as your signature suggests.  Mind you, any 2011 MacBook Pro must use the original 10.6 installer disc labelled MacBook Pro if it desires to have 10.6 installed on it.   The retail installer disc will not work on that model, nor will one from another age MacBook Pro, or other model labelled installer.  Also
    10.7 came both on USB Flash drive and Mac App Store installer versions.   Both required either 10.6.6 minimum be pre-installed, or no Mac OS X operating system on the drive or partition it was to be installed on.
    10.7.1 through 10.7.5 combo could be installed only once 10.7 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.7.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
    10.8 came only on Mac App Store installer.  It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
    10.8.1 to 10.8.5 combo could be installed only once 10.8 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.8.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
    10.9 came only on Mac App Store installer. It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
    Both 10.9 and 10.9.1 had a serious security vulnerability, which only 10.9.2 addressed.
    10.9.2 combo could be installed only once 10.9 had been installed.
    For all three Mac App Store releases, the partition to be installed on had to be GUID partition formatted according to Apple Disk Utility.

    Hi Chennie,
    Thank you for the post.
    Does the issue persists after you use the "Write a query to specify the data to transfer" option instead of “Copy data from one or more tables or views” option? If so, the issue may occur due to incorrect data type matching between the FastObjects database
    data types and SSIS data types. In this condition, I don’t think it is necessary to upgrade the SQL Server version. Since you can open the Column Mappings dialog box, please try to modify the data type mapping manually.
    In addition, the issue seems to be the same as the issue described in the following blog:

  • Help First Aid Fails From Install Disk

    My I-Mac G-5 crashed and on restart is displaying the grey screen with the question mark instead of finding the os / hard drive. I rebooted again from the install disk holding down C and when I went to verify and repair the disk... the repair option wasn't selectable and when I select verify i get this message
    "First Aid failed
    "Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on '(volume name)' because the following error was encountered: No valid packages"
    The Apple support on this topic here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25704
    only covers when the application disk utility fails from your OS... But its failing for me from my INSTALL Disk.
    Thanks in advance!

    That error occurs because either the /Library/Receipts/ folder has been deleted or its contents were deleted. Without that DU will not function. This is because when you repair permissions Disk Utility uses the Receipts folder on the OS X volume being repaired.
    However, it cannot fix your problem. Your problem results from damaged or corrupted system files required during startup. The only solution is to reinstall OS X. You may be able to do this without erasing the drive by doing an Archive and Install:
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Freeze-ups, problems, and "First Aid Failed"

    I've been experiencing some freeze-ups lately on my Macbook Pro. I verified and repaired disk permissions on Disk Utility, but when I went to verify the disk itself, it said "First Aid Failed". It did say "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair" and "Invalid volume free block count (It should be 815187 instead of 814946)" and "The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired."
    "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
    "1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
    What should I do to fix this problem? Thanks.

    Jaworski
    If you can't find anyone with the right install disks but (depending on the size of your startup volume) you can get your hands on an external drive of some kind you might want to try using CarbonCopyCloner to clone your basic system to it, selecting it as your boot volume in system preferences, booting from it, and then repairing your internal drive using Disk Utility from the cloned install.
    It's definitely not the most elegant solution, especially since you would essentially be attempting to fix a corrupted volume with a corrupted volume, but it might be worth a shot in your case due to the limited availability of your install disk.
    Just a thought.

  • 10gRel2 Infra Install Fails While Trying to Spawn 'opmnctl start'

    Installing Application Server 10gRel2 Infrastructure on RHEL 4 (64-bit)
    Installation fails 66% through.
    The error occurred while trying to determine the running process: spawning 'oracle_home/bin/opmnctl start'
    I tried manually: 'opmnctl stop' Nothing.
    I then tried: 'opmnctl status' Nothing.
    How can I resolve this so that I can finish the installation.
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    My problem is "creating domain is failed". I guess that the issue with windows 7 32 bits on laptop doesn't configure and run nodemanager. I tried to start nodemanager but don't work (with weblogic scriptinf tools WST). However, Weblogic run ok but nodemanager is inactive. Also it doesn't create nodemanager.propierties. If I create a file nodemanager.properties (or I copied on directory obiee_home\ws_server_10.3\common\nodemanager) obiee installer configures its parameters pre-configured (if I modify a parameter, the installer modify it a default value and I don't know where is these parameters and its definition).
    I have installed obiee simple and enterprise and it don't work. I have installed on oracle 11g R2 (desktop and enterprise with datawarehouse) and obiee installer doesn't work. Further this installation obiee delay an hour and then generates error in my case "creating domain is failed".
    I'm going try to run install obiee 11.1.1.5 on windows 7 xp mode.
    Important: We need help of oracle experts or Oracle communicates if obiee installs or not on windows 7 32 bits laptop because We have wasted
    Thanks if anyone help us!!

  • Disk First aid failing

    I had a printer app die on me and take the dock and the top right part of the menu bar with it (they were still visible, just wouldn't respond to any mouse clicks). I shut down every app I could (some were minimized, and alt-tab wasn't working either), then shut down the machine by holding the power button for 10 seconds (it couldn't shutdown because of the hung app).
    On reboot, it seemed to take extra long to get past the initial apple-logo spinner. Once it finally got to the login screen (the login screen shows available accounts, but requires a password), I clicked on my account, and got a beachball for an indeterminate amount of time (I walked away after 5 minutes, and came back a few hours later and the beach ball had stopped).
    Once I logged in, it slowly started, but the dock seemed to freeze again before I could get any apps started. The icons in the upper right part of the menu bar also took forever to come in (~10 minutes).
    I held the power to shut it down again, and this time booted off the osx cd. I started disk utility, and ran verify, which failed and told me to run repair, which I did. I got a ton of inode errors, and eventually, the repair failed. I tried to run the repair again, because I wasn't sure what else to do. This time, I got a ton of 'Missing thread record (id = ??????)' where ??? is a six digit number, followed by a large number of 'invalid directory item count' errors, a few other errors (incorrect number or extended attribs, incorrect number of ACLs), and another fail.
    I decided to try to mount the disk and rsync whatever I could to a usb drive, but after switching to terminal from the osx boot cd, I found the drive wasn't mounted. I went back to Disk Utility and tried to mount it, but it gave an error about the drive needing 'repair'.
    So, my question at this point is, is there any way to mount the drive so I can try to recover something?
    Also, what else should I have tried after the first 'repair disk' failed?
    Thanks

    Before I posted this, I did run through 'repair disk' three times, at which point DU gave me the amusing error message 'repair failed three times' (or something similar, don't remember the exact wording).
    That was 24 hours ago. I booted up with the osx install cd again, and this time DU doesn't even see a partition on that drive. The hard disk is listed in the left nav, followed by the optical drive, then the 'osx install dvd' partition on the optical drive, but the partition on the hard disk isn't listed. When highlighting the hard disk, all four first aid buttons (verify/repair disk/disk permissions) are grey'd out.
    Thanks
    The SMART status does say 'verified' for that disk, so I assumed it wasn't a physical failure, and I should be ok to reinstall.
    I'd love to know what happened, but I'm sensing at this point I'm severely screwed and need to reinstall. I'll wait another 24 hours before I do so, in the event anyone has another suggestion as to what I could do to find out what happened, or attempt to recover some files.

  • First Aid failed - now what?

    While running First Aid in Disk Utility, I get a an Error message, "Disk Utility stopped verifying because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit". Before this, disk utility clearly says that various volumes need to be repaired (including my hard-drive) but because of this error I never get that far. Any ideas of what I can do to remedy this problem?

    I had no intention of giving you that impression and nor do I think that. If my wording made you think that I apologize.
    The hard disk inside your Mac is your start-up disk, the one you start your Mac from. It cannot repair itself, so you need instead to start up from the install disk that came with your Mac - this why it is so important to have it.
    Place that DVD in your superdrive and go to the Apple menu and click on Restart. Hold down the c key on your keyboard until your Mac has started up. This will take a bit longer than when you start from your hard disk.
    You are NOT going to install anything, but just select English as your language (assuming that it is!), and ignore the next (install) window that appears. Go to Utilities in the menu at the top of the screen, and go to Disk Utility. Select your Hard Disk and click on repair.
    This will take a little while and you will see all kinds of messages in the window, all of which you can ignore. Finally it will say Disk Repaired, and you then restart again without holding down the c key, in order to start up again from your built-in hard disk.

  • Keychain First Aid Fails

    Not remembering a web site login, I opened Keychain Access to look it up and noted that it wasn't storing ANY web site passwords. I ran Keychain First aid which found a problem, but failed to repair my Keychain with the message:
    "User differs on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist, should be 501, owner is 0
    Owner not corrected on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist, reason: No such file or directory"
    Yet, I can see the "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist" file, and have opened it in Omnioutliner. I've already repaired permissions and run Disk Warrior 3.0.3 to no avail; same erroneous error message. Help?

    A couple of things to try. Move the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist to the trash, but don't delete it. Restart and try Keychain First Aid. If it works, quit the app, and empty the trash. If you have a backup of your system, move the ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain to the desktop, copy over the backup, restart, and try it again. Report back.

  • First Aid failed! Error Was encountered.

    I ran the First Aid disk utility on my Mac today and got the above message. In the discussion forum I posted this question and found a reply to "click the disclosure triangle on the left of the hard disk drive icon to display...select your language first. Do not click Continue in the first screen..."
    Problem: I can't find a disclosure triangle at the left of the hard disk icon. Please help! My computer runs A+. I don't want to lose it/

    Yes,
    If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair.
    First check your drives health with S.M.A.R.T. in Disk Utility. Because if your drive is physically defective, utilities won't help.
    I also recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
    I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
    If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Good Luck! DALE
    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

  • Runtime error while trying to execute custom F4 help in OOP ALV grid.

    Dear All,
    I am trying to add custom search help for one of my column in ALV grid. I'm using OOP ALV, when i click for search help for that column, the system shows runtime error like below.
    I am new to OOP concept and tried to follow program BCALV_EDIT_03. But not getting this error occur. Please help me.
    With regards.

    Hi,
    In order to be able to provide a search help for a field in an ALV you must do the following things.
    1) The field where F4 help need to be attached needs to be made editable.
    2) Create an event handler class to handle the ONF4 event. You can refer the following code:
        CLASS lcl_alv1_handler DEFINITION.
        PUBLIC SECTION.
           "Tohandle F4 helps
           METHODS handle_f4 FOR EVENT onf4 OF cl_gui_alv_grid
                   IMPORTING e_fieldname e_fieldvalue es_row_no er_event_data
                             et_bad_cells e_display.
        ENDCLASS.
       CLASS lcl_alv1_handler IMPLEMENTATION.
          METHOD handle_f4.
    CASE e_fieldname.
         WHEN 'LIFNR'.               "Set F4 for courier vendor
             SELECT lifnr name1 FROM lfa1 INTO TABLE lt_lifnr.
           IF lt_lifnr IS NOT INITIAL.
             CALL FUNCTION 'F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST'
               EXPORTING
                 retfield           = 'LIFNR'
                 window_title   = 'Vendors'
                 value_org       = 'S'
               TABLES
                 value_tab       = lt_lifnr
                 return_tab      = lt_return
               EXCEPTIONS
                 parameter_error = 1
                 no_values_found = 2
                 OTHERS          = 3.
             IF sy-subrc = 0.
               READ TABLE gt_final INTO wa_final_t INDEX es_row_no-row_id.
               IF sy-subrc = 0.
                 READ TABLE lt_return INTO wa_return INDEX 1.
                 IF sy-subrc = 0.
                   CALL FUNCTION 'CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_INPUT'
                     EXPORTING
                       input  = wa_return-fieldval
                     IMPORTING
                       output = lv_lifnr.
                   wa_final_t-lifnr  = lv_lifnr.
                   MODIFY gt_final FROM wa_final_t INDEX es_row_no-row_id.
                 ENDIF.
               ENDIF.
             ENDIF.
           ENDIF.
          ENDCASE.
             CALL METHOD o_alv->refresh_table_display.
          ENDMETHOD.
       ENDCLASS.
        In the above method, GT_FINAL-LIFNR is being overwritten by the LIFNR you had selected       from F4 help. So we will call the refresh_table_display after it to see the result in the ALV.
    3) After creating the ALV object, add the fields to which the F4 has to be added. For this you
        need to declare an internal table based on  lvc_t_f4. Use the following code. Here O_ALV is    my ALV object.:
       CREATE OBJECT o_container
           EXPORTING
             container_name              = 'CUSTCON'
           EXCEPTIONS
             cntl_error                  = 1
             cntl_system_error           = 2
             create_error                = 3
             lifetime_error              = 4
             lifetime_dynpro_dynpro_link = 5
             OTHERS                      = 6.
         IF sy-subrc <> 0.
    *     MESSAGE ID SY-MSGID TYPE SY-MSGTY NUMBER SY-MSGNO
    *                WITH SY-MSGV1 SY-MSGV2 SY-MSGV3 SY-MSGV4.
         ENDIF.
         CREATE OBJECT o_alv
           EXPORTING
             i_parent          = o_container
           EXCEPTIONS
             error_cntl_create = 1
             error_cntl_init   = 2
             error_cntl_link   = 3
             error_dp_create   = 4
             OTHERS            = 5.
         IF sy-subrc <> 0.
    *     MESSAGE ID SY-MSGID TYPE SY-MSGTY NUMBER SY-MSGNO
    *                WITH SY-MSGV1 SY-MSGV2 SY-MSGV3 SY-MSGV4.
         ENDIF.
       CLEAR : gt_f4, wa_f4.
       wa_f4-fieldname   = 'LIFNR'.
       wa_f4-register    = 'X'.
       wa_f4-getbefore   = space.
       wa_f4-chngeafter  = space.
       APPEND wa_f4 TO gt_f4.
       Here I am assigning F4 to LIFNR field in the final internal table that is displayed using ALV.
       After this register this field for F4.
        CALL METHOD o_alv->register_f4_for_fields
           EXPORTING
              it_f4 = gt_f4.
       CREATE OBJECT o_alv_handler.
       SET HANDLER : o_alv_handler->handle_f4 FOR o_alv1.
       The object o_alv_handler is created based on the event handler class.
    I hope that this will solve your issue. Revert if this is solved.
    Rgards,
    Abijith

  • IMac refuses to boot up - grey screen, first aid failed

    Hope someone can help me...
    Recently downloaded the latest intel mac securiy update - ver. 11 - since then my iMac began to take a long time to boot up. It started fine this monring but upon shutdown and subsequent restart this evening my machine reaches the grey screen stage and then seems to 'loop' continuously - no log-in screen is ever reached.
    I tried power off, unplug all cables - no results
    I tried safe boot - no joy either
    Booted from back up cds - ran disk utilities
    verify disk - it aborted at the catalog check with invalid node structure, 1 HFS volume could not be repaired messages
    verify disk permissions - it froze
    tried install and archive - message was installation failed
    Is there anything else I can try apart from erasing my hard drive and installing from scratch?
    This seems to have started since I downloaded the ver 11 intel security update...
    any advice greatly appreciated
    Hazel

    Hi Hazel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Don't try to Repair Permissions or anything else until the Disk Structure is fixed.
    You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    But sometimes fsck will work if you do it a few times, not likely, but possible.
    Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
    (Space between fsck AND -fy important).
    Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
    To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    (SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

    The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

  • Creating Domain step fails while trying to install OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5)

    Hi Everyone,
    I am really stuck at a point from where I do not know which route to take. I am trying to install OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5) on my Windows 7 (32-bit) laptop. I have tried all the options:
    1. Simple Install
    2. Enterprise Install
    3. Software only install (after installing Weblogic 10.3.4.0 separately)
    Everything goes well till the step Bi Configuration->Creating Domain.
    In this process whenever it reaches the stage when it tries to start Node Manager, it starts getting java exceptions and fails. It typically occurs when it does not find the nodemanager.properties file and tries to save the configurations there. It then encounters a Fatal Error.

    After this it hangs for a long time before finally coming up with Node Manager Server Timed Out error and finally the Creating Domain step fails.
    One thing that I have noticed is that whenever it tries to create the nodemanager.properties or write to it it encounters this error and hence the nodemanager.properties file is also not getting generated.
    I have ensured that there are no spaces in the TEMP and TMP paths. I even tried creating and putting the nodemanager.properties file in the location but that too does not work.
    Strange part is that when I install Weblogic separately and have nodemanager as a windows service, then with the nodemanager.properties that I created the windows service runs, but the OBIEE installation still fails.
    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and regards,
    Subho
