First backup never completed

I am having a lot of trouble with the time machine backing up to the time capsule.
It has never completed the first backup. It always gets about midway and then informs me there is an error.
I have appox 90GB to backup. It typically gets to around 70GB before the error occurs.
I've restarted this many time - with nothing else running on the machine (no Mozy or dropbox).
Any clues?

For those who are interested.
Apple's recommendation is to reformat the hard disk and try again.
This is a very common issue - if the first backup was interrupted.
Many are discussion on this,

Mid 2009 MacBook Pro fails to complete the first back up to a new Time Capsule.  Time Machine progress sticks at various stages, but after 3 attempts, I've yet to find success.  Should I remove the old data drive from my previous first gen Time Capsule?  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the answer Linc, but how do I check to make sure the back-up process is working if I don't think I need to restore?
Create a test file with Text Edit (or any other program) and save it to your desktop.
Run Time Machine from the menu bar.
When the Time Machine icon in the menu bar stops spinning, drag your test file to the trash.
Open Time Machine and go back 1 page. You should see your test file on the desktop.

  • Iphone 3gs backup never completes

backup never completes; v v v v slowwww; even after 10 hours overnight. now on attempting to install os 3.1.2, backup starts, after 10 hours still backing up, black bar hardly 20%, have to end the process.

I had that problem with my iphone when I got back from a recent trip where I used MotionX GPS quite a bit. I didn't think of clearing the cache on it. I ended up taking most of my 185 apps off the iPhone, only leaving a few that I had data I didn't feel like putting in from scratch. I then ran backup and it successfully backed up, Then I added 80 off those apps again. One of them was MotionX GPS and now the phone backs up and syncs in 3 minutes.

  • I am trying to update my iPad to ios5 but backup never completes even after 24 hours attached to iTunes? Frustrated. Any ideas?

Trying to back up ipad in order to upgrade to ios5. I have connected for over 24 hours and shows it is working but never completes. Don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Temporarily disable your firewall and security software and see if that helps.

  • How to reset logs on Exchange 2010 after Event 518 stops backups from completing?

I'm only able to find references to resetting logs Exchange 2000 and 2003.  I'm looking for info for Exchange 2010.
There appears to be some kind of corrupt logs issue with one of our mailbox databases.  The corrupt logs cause the full backup to fail and because the full backup fails, the logs just get worse and keep growing.
The server has event ID 518 that says a log is  "is missing (error -528) and cannot be used. If this log file is required for recovery, a good copy of the log file will be needed for recovery to complete successfully. "
How do e get past this and stop the backup job from trying to look for this log file and start over?  I know that a full backup is supposed to clear the logs, but it will not happen because the backup never completes due to this log error.

    its still same for 2010
Stop all the databases in the storage group.
Verify the state of each database file in the particular storage group. For information about how to verify the state of each database file, see the "Database states" section.
Perform one of the following actions:
If one or more of the databases are in a Dirty Shutdown or Inconsistent state, determine which transaction log files can be removed without affecting database consistency.
For more information, see the "Log files" section.
If all the databases are in a Clean Shutdown or Consistent state, you may remove all the transaction log files except for the current transaction log file. Removing the
current log file when all databases are in a Clean Shutdown state will cause a reset of the log file sequence. This does not prevent databases from starting. However, a reset of the log file sequence affects the ability to roll a
database forward from a previous backup if the situation occurs.
Copy all the transaction log files that you want to remove to a different location before you permanently remove them from the transaction log hard disk. Do not permanently delete the transaction log files until you have
successfully completed a full online backup of all the databases in the storage group.

  • First Backup: Issues...

Hello trusty forum! I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I've just purchased my new Time Capsule.  My first back-up is just under 900GB.
I have arranged my TIme Capsule so that it is recognised on a pre-existing wireless network and I can do a wireless back-up without issue.
However, due to the size of the first complete back-up I know you can do it via ethernet but can someone clarify what it is I'm supposed to be connecting and which ports I should be using?
I've tried Mac Pro to Time Capsule (didn't work), and then connected my router to my Time Capsule and that didn't work.  I've tried different wires.
I think I'm putting it in the wrong port, but if someone could clarify for me that would absolutely incredible!
    Thanks very much in advance!
    Andy

Have you configured that Time Capsule to "join" the existing wireless network?
Try connecting the Ethernet port on your Mac Pro to an Ethernet port on the Time Capsule.  If necessary, add an Ethernet connection item to the Network panel of System Preferences.  To assure that your Mac Pro is using the Ethernet connection until the first backup is complete, you might consider turning off Wi-Fi on the Mac Pro.
Your system details are a little confusing.  A "Mac Pro" is an Intel device, not a "G5".

  • HT3275 never ends to complete the first backup

After the initial setup time capsule never finished making the first backup. 40 Mb be wanting to complete the copy and hence does not pass.

No it is not normal.. it is completely wrong.
Stop the TM and start over.
Use the TC via ethernet.. that is required but turn off wireless to ensure the TC is the only network connected item.
Is your MacPro actually running Snow Leopard?
If so the firmware update may be the worst thing.
Do a factory reset of the TC and start over.
Has TM been used before with an external drive or something else.
I would recommend you do a full reset of TM if that is the case.
    See A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Do a verify of the local disk. A5
Load the widget A1 to see what TM is actually on about.

  • TS3992 Trying to commence first ever Storage & Backup but it fail and messages "The last backup could not be completed." "Last Backup-Never". Any clues?

Trying to commence first ever Storage & Backup but it fails and massages "the Last backup could not be completed" "Last Backup - Never".

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • First time capsule backup never stops and shows insane progress numbers

We've bought a 1TB time capsule and are trying to get the first backup done.
It's backed up a lot of the first Mac (a MacBook Pro with a 200GB drive with about 170GB used).
Because we did it over the wireless LAN this took a long time, and it went away more than once, requiring a backup restart. (By "went away", the MacBook lost connectivity to the time capsule a few times, requiring a Mac reboot to fix, and our AirPort actually crashed once.)
After a few iterations it gets to apparently being nearly done. However, it now never completes. It says (after a very long indexing period) "backing up 128MB of 128MB" and both those numbers slowly count upward. Forever. We've done tens of GB in this way - there's no indication of what really remains to be backed up or what is actually being backed up, such a log window of filenames.
We are at an utter loss as to what is wrong or whether we're close to success at all.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It sounds like your main problem is a bad WIFI connection. Time Machine should be able to recover from a failed or interrupted backup, but it can take a long time, even if your WIFI is working well, as it may have to spend a lot of time figuring out where it was.
I'd suggest cancelling the backup and connecting your Mac to the TC via an Ethernet cable until you can get the first backup completed. It's much faster, even when your WIFI is working well.
Once that's done, you can try to improve the wireless connection, and address the other problem.
The ever-increasing size is likely a result of other changes being made to your Mac during the backup. After the first "pass," TM checks for this, and will do a second pass. Normally, of course, this is very small and quick, but some things can cause what you're seeing. Unfortunately, it's difficult to diagnose until you get that first backup completed -- if it continues to happen on subsequent backups, you can see just what's being backed-up. See #9 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for some common apps that can cause this, and a way to determine just what it is.

  • Time Machine back up never completes as estimate backup grows

Following a recent HD failure on my 2008 IMAC I have invested in a new 2014 Mac Mini (2.6 GHz Intel Core i5) with 8GB RAM and 1TB HD.
I have restored my IMAC data to my Mac Mini from an old WD External drive so the Mac Mini now holds 399GB data.
I have also purchased a 2TB Time Capsule.
The problem I have is when trying to perform the first full back-up of the Mac Mini to the Time Capsule using Time Machine the back-up never completes.
    Steps followed:
    - I click options within Time Machine where you have the chance to exclude back-ups, this shows estimated back-up size as 399GB agreeing with my HD view.
    - I start back-up and and as soon as it commences it reads backing up 0.00GB of 431.25GB (Not sure where the extra 31GB comes from)
    - I leave this to run and when the first figures gets to around 390GB of 431GB both figures start to increase. This never ends!
    - I have tried the Time Capsule via WIFI and cable and same issue occurs.
    - I have tried switching the Time Capsule for the old WD Hard Drive and again the same issue.
    - My sons Mac Mini back-ups fine using TM with either of these drives so it appears that there is something wrong with TM on my new iMac.
I have considered purchasing an alternative to TM but would rather use TM as it has worked fine for me over the years.

  • Time machine will online back to to a drive called "data" Time capsule back up drive is stuck in "Waiting to complete first backup". What to do?

So I can't get my time machine to do its first backup to the time capsule drive. It has been 4 days now and still says waiting to complete first back up. It did back up to a drive called "data" but it doesn't let me go back in time like it should.

  • First Backup Taking 48hrs +

I received my Time Capsule in the mail on Tuesday and immediately started backing up. Its Thursday afternoon and it is only 50% complete. I feel like it shouldn't be taking this long to complete the initial backup. Any suggestions?

That first backup is a doozy. I strongly recommend that you connect a CAT6 ethernet cable to your machine and use that connection for the initial backup. Using that method, it should be able to back up faster than 10GB per hour.
It's also worth noting that if you're using wireless for the initial backup, everything else on your network connection will suffer as well. It's not that your Time Capsule hates you or that Apple designed a crappy product, it's the limitation of 802.11n. Even though 802.11n is cutting edge wireless technology, it's significantly slower than gigabit ethernet with a wired connection.
Normally you would never be affected, because 802.11n is faster than most people's internet connections. If your machine (or other machines) are suffering while your initial backup is running, it's because your Time Capsule is overwhelmed. If you plug in the ethernet cable, you not only take advantage of the much faster connection, but the other machines in your house/office can still use the wireless connection.
    Hope that helps!

  • My FCPX boots up and then says restoring windows and stays there and never completely boots.  I've tried everything.  Any thoughts?

My FCPX boots up and then says restoring windows and stays there and never completely boots.  I've tried everything.  Any thoughts?

Please state what you have tried - there's no point in people here wasting their valuable (own) time trying to help you, only to find you've already tried what they are suggesting.
Have you tried trashing your preferences?
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs first, then if trashing makes no difference, you can restore all your settings.
If you trash them and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then if they get corrupted you can ditch the bad prefs and restore from your (Digital Rebellion) backup.
Can't guarantee it, but it's worth a try.
If that doesn't work, move your projects and events (if you have any) to new folders so that FCP X doesn't find them, then relaunch the application. If it launches OK, there's a very good chance one of your projects or events is corrupt or one of the files in an event is corrupt.
Quit the app, then move one event or project at a time back to the original folder and launch FCP X agian - keep going until you find the cause.

  • Safe boot has never completed.  Suggestions:?

Purchased new MAC Pro 2/10.  It has never completed a safe boot.  Starts ok but does not complete in 12 hours.  Archived/reinstalled.  Reset PRAM.  Tried by setting NVRAM.  Never Completes.  Any suggestions?

Just a hunch, but I think you should check out the drive using the free demo of SMART Utility. If you were able to repair the drive, then my first theory is wrong. You appear to have done just about everything else. If you did a re-install, that should have fixed it.
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
You appear to be running 10.6.3. If you have a backup to restore from, you might try the 10.6.7 Combo update.
