First Backup Taking 48hrs +

I received my Time Capsule in the mail on Tuesday and immediately started backing up. Its Thursday afternoon and it is only 50% complete. I feel like it shouldn't be taking this long to complete the initial backup. Any suggestions?

That first backup is a doozy. I strongly recommend that you connect a CAT6 ethernet cable to your machine and use that connection for the initial backup. Using that method, it should be able to back up faster than 10GB per hour.
It's also worth noting that if you're using wireless for the initial backup, everything else on your network connection will suffer as well. It's not that your Time Capsule hates you or that Apple designed a crappy product, it's the limitation of 802.11n. Even though 802.11n is cutting edge wireless technology, it's significantly slower than gigabit ethernet with a wired connection.
Normally you would never be affected, because 802.11n is faster than most people's internet connections. If your machine (or other machines) are suffering while your initial backup is running, it's because your Time Capsule is overwhelmed. If you plug in the ethernet cable, you not only take advantage of the much faster connection, but the other machines in your house/office can still use the wireless connection.
Hope that helps!

  • First backup is taking forever (more than two days) in my MacBook Air

First backup is taking forever , painfully slow, I am using MacBook Air, what can I do to speed things up. is there a particular way to set TC up ?? I set it up to join an existing wireless network, is this right or wrong? I just need a few tips to make the backup faster.

Answer: yes, the Time Capsule is junk - in my opinion. I was excited about an all-in-one router plus 1TB of backup wirelessly available, but if you check the many posts about this thing, you'll hear about numerous problems:
    - unbelievably slow backups, overnight or longer for the first, very long for even small backups after minor activity - and not necessarily due to network speeds.
    - heat issues - this thing runs very hot, even with fans running, and people have had to put little rubber feet under it to improve airflow, etc. - not something I think is reasonable for a $500+ item - some get an "overheating" message from the utility app.
    - problems with hanging - it hangs on "Preparing Backup" (as it did for me for days) and doesn't backup - thereby making the unit useless as it was designed.
    - mounting and recognition issues - not so much with me but for quite a few others.
SEND IT BACK... I am sending mine back and going back to manual backups where I can see exactly what is being backed up to my external HDD and where it is. The opaque nature of the entire Time Machine backup is irritating to me - TC was "backing up" say, "75MB of 125.3MB" but I had no idea what it was backing up, and why only 125.3MB? Was that all my activity changed during the session? Or all sorts of system files, etc. being backed up? I'm not techie enough to get into the guts of it, so I am going back to my usual external HDD to do it by hand. It's a good habit to get into (if inconvenient compared to the TC) but at least I am secure with it.
I am also not sure if TC can be used as a plug-and-play USB storage drive if I were to, say, just connect it to a Windows machine and try to access files in folders. I suppose not?

  • Backup taking a long time

My time machine backup has been taking a really long time. According to Time Machine Buddy the latest back up started yesterday at 1:02 am and it is now 1:49 pm. So over 36 hours and it is only 9.6 Megs into 1GB, at least according to the TM drop down menu in the menu bar.
The log shows the following. So I'm wondering what the problems are with spotlight and I'm wondering why the number of items has changed. Also why does it show different GB sizes than reported in the drop down?

It's clearly stuck. Cancel the backup (if it won't cancel, see #D6 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum).
Is this your first backup to this destination? If so, make sure your drive is set up properly, per #C1 in the Troubleshooting Tip.
Otherwise, this looks like a problem with your TM drive, or communicating with it. Try the things in #D2 of the Troubleshooting Tip. If that doesn't help, try a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on your internal HD, per #A5 there. As it says, if that shows errors, you'll have to use the procedure in the yellow box there to repair them.
If none of those help, post back with all the messages from the latest attempt (but don't let it run anywhere near that long with no progress), and details of the destination for your backups.

  • Time Machine "backup failed" Backing up to Time Capsule (first backup)

I just received my iMac (24", 3.04 ghz, 4 gig ram) a few days ago...my firs Mac, after over 20 years with pc's. All working fairly well, as I try to learn the new format. Attempted my first backup last night using Time Machine, backing to Time Capsule. As I went to bed, it stated it was "preparing". This morning it stated "backup failed". "Time Capsule error". The networking aspects of Time Capsule are working without a problem. Unfortunately, the error message is vague and I'm definitely illiterate when it comes to much of the properties of a Mac. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed in investigating the problem? Thanks!!

Well, I greatly appreciate the earlier advice. I have learned much in my reading. Of course, now with my "tinkering", I determined that the Time Capsule was not formatted to OS extended (journaled) as was my Macintosh harddrive. (Don't really understand why it would not come that way). I attempted to format using disk utility, now it doesn't show up in that application and under FINDER (shared devices), it is detailed as "sharepoint". I read elsewhere that it was recommended to use airport utility to reformat to OS Extended (journaled). Anyway, of course, now I've gone full circle and am comfused as to the proper way to have it formatted properly and recognized by disk utility. As such, currently I cannot use it for backup.
Frequently, I'm my worsed enemy! Thanks again for the advice.

  • Time Capsule: First backup over ethernet is very slow

My understanding is that a direct ethernet connection between my Imac and Time Capsule would make the initial backup process faster, but I did not notice any improvement whatsoever and the first backup is proceeding veeeeeeery slow. I was wondering if there was something I was missing when I connected by cable.
    Thank you for your help!

    Felix,
The first backup I did was wirelessly and it was slow.
So, I erased the TC Hard Disk and hooked it up via ethernet.
    It went much faster.
I was doing about 1.1 GB every 5 minutes using ethernet.

  • Time Machine backup slow (not first backup) - Why?

Hi, I recently purchased a new 3TB backup drive to backup my iMac system (10.9.4).
I set up a Time Machine backup of my system + external HD, and began scheduled backups about a week ago. As expected the first backup took several hours (overnight) since it was backing up  nearly 1TB of data. Subsequent backups were fast and everything seemed fine.
Then, last night I ran a backup and Time Machine began to copy ALL the data again. The backup took 6-7 hours. Why would it do this if it uses a cumulative system where most of the data is already on the backup drive? Did this occur because I manually started the backup (by selecting"Back Up Now" in Time Machine on the toolbar). Or is something wrong?
    Thanks
    Tom

Open Time Machine Preferences>click "Select Disk">click on the appropriate TM disk under the bottom window titled "Available Disks." Force a backup and see if it works. If this doesn't fix it reboot your iMac and/or Time Capsule and try forcing a backup again once the iMac and/or TC have fully booted up.

  • TC First Backup Queston

From what I understand is that the very first time TC runs it needs to backup the whole machine. I have my TC mounted over a network and it starts to back up and fails after backing up between 5 and 15 gigs.
What I am thinking of doing is connecting it via USB having it run the first backup and then moving it back across the network.
    Will this work?
Will it know that it has already backed up my computer once before?
or will it think that it has to do it again cross network?
    Cheers

No, but it will if you use an Ethernet cable.

    Yes.

  • First backup interrupted

Quick question: I attempted to do the first backup to 1TB TC via wireless, and it failed the first 3 times or so after a few hours (with the connection was interrupted message). So I then did it via Ethernet and it completed successfully and now seems to be automatically backing up fine via wireless.
my question is this: can i trust the initial backup? It was not a single clean run, rather the sum of the fist 3 failed ones + the final successful wired one. Am I better of erasing the disk ,and redoing the first backup via Ethernet? Or is the TM software good at determining how far it got when deteriming where to resume?
Since all backups after the first one are effectively deltas, that first one is clearly pivotal.
    Thanks

    crazy a,
It wouldn't hurt to do another backup, but you should be OK without doing so. If the initial Time Machine backup was ungracefully interrupted, it would have started a new set of backups and ignored the first set. If you only have one disk image on the Time Capsule, then you're OK.
    Cheers!

  • Can't load disk image when doing first backup

    Hi
I've had to erase my Time Capsule's Time Machine sparesebundle as it had a corruption. And now I am trying to do a first backup again.
Unfortunately, I keep getting an error message telling me the machine can't create a disk image; I have no idea why. I have tried changing my computer name in case that makes a difference (but I don't see why as the previous name worked fine for a year or more).
Since trying to start this new process, I have noticed that sometimes in the TM preference pane that the TC name is given a Time Capsule-1 as opposed to its normal name of Time Capsule.
Below is the log captured from the TM widget.

I tried to start the backup again, after logging out and back in again (as I had done several times before), but this time the sparsebundle loaded ok and the backup started properly.
So there's no need for anyone to spend any time on me.

  • Time Capsule first backup

    Looking for help.
Got a new 2TB TC. Tried to backup my son's imac (1 yr old but updated to Snow Leopard OS) - was operating TC wirelessly. Froze up - I think I had setting wrong and bad idea to try a wireless backup on first. After trying a few things I disconnected it all, did a factory reset on the TC, and tried to back up my new MacPro hard wired - reset TM to right settings for no wireless operation and simple ethernet connection and all went fine.
Then went back to my son's imac.
I have connected TC by ethernet; switched airport off; switched firewall off; set TM up as not requiring wireless operation; set imac to never go to sleep or go off; deleted original bundle for the imac from TM to try and "start again" as I believe interupting the first backup as i have done can cause problems.
Back up starts ok; in Time Machine I can see TC; cannot see any "oldest" or "latest" backup so it looks like I have successfully deleted any history. Backup reaches 1.32GB and then it stops. Nothing happening. If I try and do anything on the imac the timer circle comes up and nothing works. I have then switched imac off and back on, deleted the relevant bundle on the TC again through Finder Go, switched TC off, started whole process again and again it stops at 1.32GB (of 38.6GB).
    Any ideas?
TC is showing steady green light.
    thanks

welcome to Apple discussions, BryD !
    you could try this:
go system preferences > time machine and turn TM off. click on +change disk+ and select none.
    next, delete this file HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
restart the machine, go system preferences > time machine and turn TM back on. click on +change disk+, re-select the backup volume und click +use for backups+. start a backup.
you may also want to download and install Time Machine Buddy. go to dashboard and browse through the logs for the recent backup attempts.
lastly, check the Time Machine FAQ and Time Machine - Troubleshooting user tips.
    any help ?

  • HT3275 never ends to complete the first backup

After the initial setup time capsule never finished making the first backup. 40 Mb be wanting to complete the copy and hence does not pass.

No it is not normal.. it is completely wrong.
Stop the TM and start over.
Use the TC via ethernet.. that is required but turn off wireless to ensure the TC is the only network connected item.
Is your MacPro actually running Snow Leopard?
If so the firmware update may be the worst thing.
Do a factory reset of the TC and start over.
Has TM been used before with an external drive or something else.
I would recommend you do a full reset of TM if that is the case.
    See A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Do a verify of the local disk. A5
Load the widget A1 to see what TM is actually on about.

Hello, i have followed all instructions to set up my time capsule but time machine was unable to do a automatic first backup. I am unable to see the time capsule as a source for my backup I can only see a share-folder with the name data. can somebody help me please.

That folder represents your Time Capsule's internal HD.  Data is the default name (some folks rename it).
To see your backups (once at least one has completed -- you can't see a backup that's in progress or has failed), use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display).
You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

The messages look the same. In between these two backups, I followed the steps in C3 in the Troubleshooting guide.
Prior to following the steps in C3, I tried:
    -restarting my computer
-doing a reset of Time Machine by deleted the preferences list from the library
-repairing the drive using disk utility (it said there were no problems)
-verifying my internal drive (again, no problems)
-erasing the disk and starting over (this is my first backup, so I don’t have any prior information that would have gotten deleted)
-verifying that I’m using the correct formats – I’m definitely using the GUID format and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format for my drive
-excluding folders that contained files that seemed to be associated with the errors. At first, they all seemed to be files in my husband’s backup folders, some of which were empty system folders from Windows. I thought this might be the issue, so I just excluded his backup folders to see if I could get it to work. The most recent failure seems to have involved a Pages file, though, so that theory was out the window.
    -using a different USB port
I’m using a Seagate 320GB internal SATA drive that I’ve put in an enclosure to make it external, so it connects via USB. I’ve read here that external SATA drives won’t work with Time Machine, but I don’t think this applies to my situation since it’s an internal drive that’s connecting via USB with the enclosure. I have a MacBook Pro with the latest version of OSX.
I’m thinking maybe I need to get a new hard drive, but wanted to check here before spending any more money.

Yes, I meant to say folders had been transferred back and forth. I deleted that DS_Store file, and while doing so, I noticed that it was listed as a Unix Executable file, while most of the others were just listed as documents, and that it changed to document when it re-created itself after I deleted it. So I found all the ones that were listed as unix executable files and deleted them, letting them re-create themselves as documents. Then I tried to backup again, but no dice:

So, it just keeps having errors and doesn't seem to respond to much of anything. I did the same processes I outlined above with this drive - repaired it, verified internal disk, reset Time Machine, etc. Nothing seems to work, so I'm guessing at this point I need to make a visit to the Genius Bar.
