First backup to TC failed halfway through after 24 hours plus of transfer

Dear all
To say that I'm frustrated right now with TM/TC would be an understatement. Here's my situation:
1 I have 270G of data on my iMac
2 my transfer speed to TC is only 130 Gbit/s, less than half speed
3 the TC is about 4m from my iMac, no walls between, same room
4 I have a AXg connected via bridge (for AirTunes) - I did this in an attempt to keep the network at n speeds, but this seems not to be the case
5 the transfer was slow but steady (see #2 above) - after 26 or 27 hours it had reached the halfway point - it will take two and a half days to make the first backup
6 then it failed, and started the backup from scratch again!
What do I do now? If I start the whole process again, it could easily fail again after another day of transfer...
Well, this can't be normal: only half-speed transfer rates, facing a 60-hour transfer that fails halfway through? What do people do with even more data than I have?
I erased the partial backup via Airport Utility, and seek help in avoiding a repeat of this mess.
Questions:
1 do other processes cause a backup to fail? (eg if my computer is being used, or is synching, or whatever) - it is totally impossible for me to suspend use of my iMac for 60 hours while the initial backup takes place.
2 can I make the initial backup via Ethernet cable?
3 does the fact that I have VM Fusion installed affect the backup?
4 how can I get a better transfer speed (somewhere nearer the max of 300 Mbit/sec?)
I would be very grateful indeed for advice and help - watching the backup creep along for more than a day only for it fail and then be back at square one is mind-numbing.

I searched my system logs and found a file that caused my connection to the TC to fail. I erased that file (after checking what it was - a temporary file connected to my Epson scanner) and tried again to back up for the first time.
This time it worked, and in under 10 hours (I had been expecting about 20-24 hours, based on the data transfer speed).
I'm very relieved - let's hope that TC and TM will now function.

  • Harddrive might be failing, computer freezes after 1 hour uptime

This happens pretty consistently, and I'm not sure whats happening because when it crashes, I can't find anything in the logs or dmesg output once I restart.  When a crash occurs, I always still move my mouse, and anything running on the screen will still be running, I just can't interact with any programs, and shell commands error out with messages like "can't find foo: readonly filesystem" or something to that effect.
Here is some information about my harddrives:
    http://pastie.org/7391010
I know that from the above it appears my /dev/sdb drive is having some issues, but the crashing happens even when I unmount all the partitions on that drive.  When the crash last occurred, I had a terminal open so I could get some dmesg output:

Which seems to think that the problem is with /dev/sda?
I did do some package upgrading this last weekend, so here is april's pacman.log file:

I'm not sure where else to look for a relevant log entry because once the computer locks up I can't really do anything meaningful. Any ideas?

OK, I feel silly.  Updated the firmware and now at least my smartctl output isn't displaying any warnings or errors.  Thanks

  • My Time Machine stalls during initial backup on external hard drive even after several hours.

We have been using Time Machine and an external hard drive to back up our MacBook for almost a year now.  Recently, the hard drive (using a USB) was removed without ejecting it properly.  After that, the auto backups began stalling.  We tried setting up Time Machine all over again but the initial back up stalls at different places (like 6MB of 87GB) even if it's left for several hours overnight.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?  If not, can anyone suggest another inexpensive way of backing up our files from our MacBook?
    Thanks!
    Shane

It might have created a new user and loaded under that.. new user being the old user. But if you have issues do it again, only this time pick where the backup will go.

The other questions might also be relevant as a new hard disk will make the Mac appear to the TM backup as a new computer.

    No.
    Is the backup ok?
Were there any messages? What's shown for *Latest Backup* on the +Time Machine Preferences+ window?
If a reasonable date & time is shown, it's ok.
If it shows Failed, see #C2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • TM fails a few seconds after starting first backup

So I buy the 1TB GForce Phantom drive and hook it up via my FireWire 800 on my Dual G5 Tower running Leopard 10.5.2. Using the Disk Utility I partition it into two HFS Extended volumes, naming the second one TimeMachine.

I finally had an opportunity to repair permissions and test TM again.
It still aborts with the error 11.
I think it has to do with a file or files in the directory /.TechToolProItems
So I'm going to delete all the files in this directory so that Tech tool will rebuild them. I'll let you know the results.

  • Time Machine fails after first backup

iMac has a 2T HD with only a little less than 1T used.  Have 4T external G-drive partitioned in two.  One half I do SuperDuper backups on and the other half for Time Machine.  SuperDuper backups go fine.  The first TM backup went fine and continued fine for three days, then would not again - failed.  I ran disk utility on the G-drive (repair disk) and the the TM back up went fine but only once, then failed on subsequent attempts. I get hourly messages saying it could not back up.  "Unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating the back up folder".  If I repeat with disk repair with Disk Utility, I can do another TM backup, but only the first one, then I get the messages again every hour that it can't back up.  Ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks

  • Time Machine "backup failed" Backing up to Time Capsule (first backup)

I just received my iMac (24", 3.04 ghz, 4 gig ram) a few days ago...my firs Mac, after over 20 years with pc's. All working fairly well, as I try to learn the new format. Attempted my first backup last night using Time Machine, backing to Time Capsule. As I went to bed, it stated it was "preparing". This morning it stated "backup failed". "Time Capsule error". The networking aspects of Time Capsule are working without a problem. Unfortunately, the error message is vague and I'm definitely illiterate when it comes to much of the properties of a Mac. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed in investigating the problem? Thanks!!

Well, I greatly appreciate the earlier advice. I have learned much in my reading. Of course, now with my "tinkering", I determined that the Time Capsule was not formatted to OS extended (journaled) as was my Macintosh harddrive. (Don't really understand why it would not come that way). I attempted to format using disk utility, now it doesn't show up in that application and under FINDER (shared devices), it is detailed as "sharepoint". I read elsewhere that it was recommended to use airport utility to reformat to OS Extended (journaled). Anyway, of course, now I've gone full circle and am comfused as to the proper way to have it formatted properly and recognized by disk utility. As such, currently I cannot use it for backup.
Frequently, I'm my worsed enemy! Thanks again for the advice.

I am having trouble using my time capsule to back up. I tried repairing through "first aid" Disk 4s2 failed and I have been directed to erase. What is in this disk? Should I erase it??

Only you know what is on the disk.. if you have been running TM to the TC then it will have your backups.. are they important?? Otherwise it will be what you..or others in the house have copied to it.. is that important?
If the first aid has failed the disk then it could be a good idea to erase it.
Does the disk mount in finder so you can see the main directory?

  • IPod freezes, after restore stops syncing halfway through

I have a 2-year old 20gb iPod that has worked fantastically for the last 2 years. About 2 weeks ago, its started freezing up at random times. I couldn't shut it off, skip songs, etc. I just had to wait 5 minutes or so for it to come back. I restored it on iTunes the other night, but during my reload of songs, it stopped halfway through. So, my iPod only has about 9gb on it. If I try to keep syncing it up, it eventually gives me an "unknown error occured" message and deletes everything on my iPod.
    I NEED HELP!

-Try resetting the iPod and try again.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next I would try restoring from backup
It is expected that when you connect an iPod that was synced to another computer/iTunes ibray, the iPod will be erased and its contents replaced with that in the iTunes library of the new computer. An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library.

That folder represents your Time Capsule's internal HD.  Data is the default name (some folks rename it).
To see your backups (once at least one has completed -- you can't see a backup that's in progress or has failed), use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display).
You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Leopard failed to install halfway through

I got passed the language selection and all that and about halfway through the installation it crashed and said to restart. It deleted Tiger and didnt install Leopard. When I try to boot from Leopard dvd I just get the white screen with the apple and the circle. When i start up without leopard in the drive i get a blue screen for a few minutes and then it tells me to restart. Thats as far as i can get. Ive tried booting in safemode and firmware and nothing has worked so far. I'm really not sure what to do next. Might there be another Leopard disc im not finding; this one says CPU Drop-in DVD

Another hosed installation and apparently you don't have a bootable backup. All I can suggest is to use the Tiger install disks that came with your machine and restore the machine to factory specs. Once, that's done, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

Trying to commence first ever Storage & Backup but it fails and massages "the Last backup could not be completed" "Last Backup - Never".

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.
