First backup went wrong... seems to be fixed now

I purchased a 500GB TC today. I installed the software, then proceeded to do a backup. It got to about a gigabyte then connection error. Then it couldn't seem to find the TC on my network. So I shut off my cable modem, turned off the TC and shut down my computer.
After powering on my cable modem, then TC, then my computer, I noticed that I could now see Time Capsule in my finder under shared devices, something I couldn't see just after installing. Only thing I can think of is that I needed to restart to get this to work properly, although it didn't make me restart.
Now that I could see it, I setup Time Machine to work with my TC. I had to enter the TC password. I started a backup 2 hours ago, and I've completed 12.72 GB out of 31.57. I seem to be averaging over 1.5 MB/second in transfer. I've heard stories of people waiting days to do 50gigs, but I haven't noticed any slowdown thus far. I have it set as .11g only, which may help in speed.
Aside from that minor hiccup the first try, I've not had any problems. All seems to be working as normal. I'm been spoiled by my FireWire 800 external drive speed, and I know wireless is going to be much slower, but I'm happy with my speed. I'm not going to be backing up 30 gigs everyday. The first one is gonna be the longest. I'm just happy I can sell my LaCie 300gb drive and my AirPort Extreme to recoup some of the money lost buying the TC.

Thanks for the comment. I don't sleep my Mac, I just turn off the display after x period of time. I kept my lid open as well. I ended up finishing in about 5 or so hours for 30 gigs. From what I've been reading about it taking a week for other's, I think that's pretty good. I then added 9 gigs to my iTunes library, and it backed that up it seems in no time. I don't know for sure, but maybe the initial backup is throttled by Apple as to not kill your bandwidth for browsing the internet, etc, but the incremental stuff daily, weekly, they let go faster? That seems to be the case with me, but I don't know the tech behind it.
So far I'm having no problems. Aside from my Time Machine backup, I'm using SuperDuper to make a sparse disk image saved to Time Capsule, so I can quickly get the files I need in the standard finder format, rather than going into Time Machine and then searching. I'll use that if I delete something, but I still like to have an image with only the current files backed up, I'll let Time Machine take care of backing up everything until my Time Capsule is full.
It's a great feeling when you buy a new piece of Apple hardware/software and it does exactly what you want it to do:)

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open CS2.

I just tried to update Itunes. Something went wrong with the update and now itunes won't open

I was notified of an update to itunes when I opened it on my PC this morning. I agreed to the update. The update did not finish and now I can't open itunes on the PC. I tried "repair" in the control panel to no avail. HELP!!

Very slow first backup...

A friend has a MacBook (C2D) and has just bought an iomega USB 2.0 external hard drive. Everything is plugged in and working its formatted (Journaled Case Sensitive(done automatically)), we have set Spotlight not to index the backup drive so we wouldn't encounter any problems.
Yet the first backup was started at 11pm last night (now 8:45 am) and it has only done 4GB of the 68GB it has to back up.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can speed this up???

Apple says that a Time Machine disk requires Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID formatting for Intel Macs and Apple Partition Map for PPC Macs. As complicated as the file structure is for Time Machine I would be inclined to take Apple at their word. Directions for properly formatting a Time Machine disk are here but people with PPC Macs should use Apple Partition Map instead of GUID.
Anti-virus software can slow Time Machine down so it should be disabled during at least the initial backup. It's also possible that Time Machine could be hanging on a corrupt file. Another possible source of slowdown is having a really large number of tiny files bunched up all together.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

I tried connecting to iTunes and neither the PC nor iTunes recognizes the device. I went through all the troubleshooting on the Apple website for this issue and nothing worked. I've reinstalled iTunes, the driver, everything and still can't get either the PC or iTunes to recognize the phone. I don't know what else to do :-( any help or suggestions are highly appreciated!
I would hate to have lost all my info, especially contacts and calendar items since I have no idea what was backed up prior to the phone getting locked on this screen. I've been told that my only option is to go to the phone carrier and they will reset it for me, but that means it will wipe out all the info.
I hope someone has a fix other than that one.

I tried this and still have the same problems. If I open Address book or the Mac App Store I get the library rebuild popup and a hang. I created a fresh user and then things are better apart from the printing issue. Its clearly some 3rd party software issue but the crash logs are meningless to me. I used the excellent Etre check app from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck so I have a list of what is being loaded and can compare clean and crashed user info but as I cant work out which of the startup items, launch agents, launch daemons etc that are causing the problem.
I have eliminated Dropbox, Mac Keeper and Witness, and it isnt related to my exterrnal LED cinema dispay or my external thunderbolt drives, or any USB devices if thats any help to anyone else. Info from Etrecheck follows -

To turn on/off retail mode, go to settings, general, legal.
Do not open legal, just put the cursor there.
Then, on the remote, type this sequence : right - right - left - center.
The AppleTV should reboot.

if you have no back up in icloud or itunes the best you can do is sync with your computer and get back what you can from there

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Press Option key on boot and select the OS X partition. If it isn't here, press Command and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility, erase the drive and install Lion or Mountain Lion
