First Backup with Ethernet but Second.....?????

As advised, I did my first backup via ethernet connection.
So I went to airport utility and configured everything for the ethernet cable.
However, when I want my subsequent backups to be done wirelessly.
How do I do this?
I tried just removing the ethernet cable but of course the time capsule couldn't be read. So I plugged it back in and I went back to airport utility and tried to change the setting so that it would join my current wireless connection. I got a green light on both the airport utility window and on my tc, however airport utility was unable to read the new configuration. I got the error "error occurred while reading the configuration" and can't get past that.
Can someone please tell me how they switched from ethernet to wireless? Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you.

I found a tip from the boards. Never mind, thank you all.

  • How to backup to TC for the first time with ethernet or USB

I had an existing wireless network and have added a TC to it as a password protected wireless device. I can initiate a wireless backup using Time Machine from my desktop Mac, but anticipating that this will be a very long first backup, I'm trying to set up a wired first time backup using ethernet. So, I've plugged an ethernet cable between the desktop Mac and one of the ethernet ports on the TC and then switched off my desktop Airport connection. I was hoping that I could then just backup using TM, but the TC doesn't seem to be recognised.
Can anyone tell me what to do? Presumably I'm doing something wrong because most people who have bought TCs are likely to have done their first backup through ethernet.

    amthie,
Here are the steps I have used to perform the initial TC backup.
*Using Time Capsule via Temporary Ethernet ONLY Connection*
Connect one end of a Cat-5 Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>) NOT to the WAN port (wheel icon). Connect the other end to your Macs ethernet port.
Next, go to System Prefs --> Network.
At the top of the window note what “Location” you are currently using, as you will need to return to this setting later.
Now, change “Location” to “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and create a new location named “Ethernet Only”.
    Click “Done”.
In the Services Pane on the left, eliminate all other services using the “-” button leaving “Ethernet” only. If you choose to leave other services listed then al the very least move Ethernet to the top of the list using the Action Menu (gear button) at the bottom and "Set Service Order".
Verify that “Configure” says “Using DHCP”.
Click "Apply" in the lower right.
You should be seeing an assigned IP Address and the Status should say “Connected”. The dot beside “Ethernet” should be green.
Now begin your backup or transfer of files.
You should still have internet access during this period.
Once the backup/transfer is complete, remember to change the Network Prefs “Location” back to “Automatic”, or whatever setting it had originally been, to restore Airport connectivity.
    Cheers!

  • How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?

How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?
Several times in the last year, I've gotten a message that Time Machine needs to completely redo my backup. Using the wireless connection, this takes almost two days. Is there a way to do the backup with ethernet and then switch back to wireless? Thanks.

May I know what is needed to make sure the MacBook is able to see Time Capsule on ethernet?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire gateway to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
If AirPort Utility cannot "see" the Time Capsule now, you will need to perform a "hard reset" by holding in the reset button for 7-8 seconds or so and then reconfigure the Time Capsule. You can use the same Time Capsule name and password, etc. as before.
Configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network" and select the Bridge Mode option when it appears during the setup using AirPort Utility.
Once the Time Capsule is configured, restart the entire network again. Power down everything, start the 2Wire first and then start each other device after that one at a time about a minute apart.
Now you can connect your Mac directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule for the backup using another Ethernet cable. In general, about 20-25 GB per hour will transfer.
The Time Capsule will broadcast a much faster wireless network than the 2Wire can provide, so you might want to leave the setup "as is" for awhile after the first backup is complete. If you decide to use the Time Capsule as your main wireless access point, you would want to turn the wireless off on the 2Wire since two wireless networks in close proximity can create interference problems.
Or, if you want to use the wireless on the 2Wire, you could turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule. Then backups will occur over the 2Wire wireless, or over Ethernet.
I don't really recommend the "Join a wireless network" setting on the Time Capsule for most users, but you could go back to that setup as well if you want after the first backup is complete.

  • Airport Extreme works with ethernet but i CAN'T ADD IT TO MY WIRELESS ?

I'm able to set up airport extreme with ethernet but for some reason i can not add it to my wireless network. Why is this ? I cant figure it out.. by now im connected hard wired airport extreme and 2wire modem is working fine.
Yesterday i was able to do it without the ethernet cable and it was succesfuly joined to my wireless network but it went amber color maybe cause it was disconnected by accident.
    Any suggestions? or solutions?

Same here. I have clearwwire and my airport extreme base station was working fine until 3 days ago. My computer cannot find the base station; tried everything. I can get internet if I connect clearwire via ethernet port. What gives? All I get is the blinking amber light. Is it just broken?

  • Time Capsule: First backup over ethernet is very slow

My understanding is that a direct ethernet connection between my Imac and Time Capsule would make the initial backup process faster, but I did not notice any improvement whatsoever and the first backup is proceeding veeeeeeery slow. I was wondering if there was something I was missing when I connected by cable.
    Thank you for your help!

    Felix,
The first backup I did was wirelessly and it was slow.
So, I erased the TC Hard Disk and hooked it up via ethernet.
    It went much faster.
I was doing about 1.1 GB every 5 minutes using ethernet.

  • First Backup with TC: REALLY slow...

    Hello everybody.
I'm performing a 300 Gb backup with Time Capsule via wi-fi. It is REALLY slow. I started yesterday at 6.00 pm and now (10.20 am) I'm at 100 Gb which means that it will be done by tomorrow afternoon. Somebody is advising me to switch from wi-fi to an ethernet cable.
Is it possible to do that while it's backing up? I mean, is it enough if I connect my mac to TC with an ethernet cable without doing any other operation or do I have to click somewhere?

To be honest Matteo, you are averaging roughly about 6Gb per hour on wi-fi, that's reasonably good for time machine backing up to time capsule. Mine had averaged about 3GB per hour.

  • Can connect to DSL modem with ethernet but no go on Airport Extreme.

I've tried everything to get this working but I can't get it right. I just signed up with dslextreme.com (a AT&T reseller) after coming off AT&T. My 12" PB hooks up fine to the new D-link DSL-2320B modem via ethernet but the Airport Extreme doesn't seem to make a working connection to it.
Using Airport Utility 5.2.1 I've set this airport up multiple ways to no avail, even resetting it and trying to set it up from scratch. I can get it all apparently happy, with green lights all around but there is no tranfer activity on the DSL modem when I'm trying to access a webpage.
Been told by dslextreme's customer support that the connection type is DCHP, not PPPoE per their own support page help that only covers the older Base Station.
Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!
    cheers

I don't have the answer, but I am experiencing the EXACT same problem (just different service provider). I had a cable modem, worked without a hitch. Switched to DSL because the service is better where I live, and I can't get the AirPort router to actually give me internet. Help!

  • Connected with ethernet but can't surf

I have an 2010 2.8 GHz Intel core i7 iMac 27" OS 10.7.5 connected to AT&T Uverse broadband. Connection to the internet was fine until doing a Software security update today. After it rebooted I could not get on the internet even though it shows in the Network preferences that it's Connected to ethernet and has the IP address 192.168.1.66. I have tried 3 different up to date browsers and I use Apple Mail, but it will not get email. I try doing a software update and it can't "because of a network problem". I try Network Diagnostics and it says "Your Internet connection appears to be working correctly."
I can connect via wireless with the same connection on my MacBook Pro and iPad, but not with my iMac.
I have tried switching modem ports and ethernet cables. I was also able to connect vie ethernet on my MacBook Pro with no problem.
    What could it be???
    Bad Ethernet port??
Can I trash the browser prefs maybe?
Any settings in the modem? DNS or other settings?
    Please help!
    Jay

OK I did what you said Linc Davis. So here is the output collected from all the textedit windows in the order they appeared separated by dashed lines.
So how do we decifer this?

  • IChat works with ethernet, but not with wifi

I've been having problems signing into iChat over my wifi connection for a long time. It will say connecting but a second later it will tell me that the connection to AIM was lost. When i sign in and my computer is connected to the internet with a cable, it works fine. I can sign in using AIM for mac over the wifi no problem, it is only with iChat.
Any help will be appreciated for i do not like the AIM for mac.
    Thanks

I will assume you're talking about video iChat connections.
You may want to check the effective Internet bandwidth while hooked-up to the Wifi. I suggest you try a speed test at one of the sites at speakeasy.net. Pick the one closest to your location. If you're getting a speed test over Wifi at about 1Mbps per second down, then I think you have a Wifi connection problem. Wifi speed is sensitive to distance and walls.
Also take a look at your port connection on iChat. Look in iChat preferences and server settings. It should say port 443 not 5190.
Lastly in Systems Preferences, set your Quicktime streaming speed to 1.5 not automatic.
    Then restart iChatAV.
... just noticed you have a Netgear router. I have had problems with that router and switched to Linksys WERT54g v4 with a dd-wrt driver. Check to see you are using UPnP and do not open any ports on your router or the Mac firewall.

  • How set up Capsule for first backup using ethernet

    Friends,
I thought I had this solved, but my problem is the following:
    1. For speed use ethernet in initial backup (2-3 times faster than by using airport)
    2. Connect ethernet cable from LAN port at Capsule (TC) to laptop
    3. Enable ethernet and disable airport.
    well well
I apparently go wrong by using Airport Utility (AU) for this. Everything goes fine. I see the TC as a shared device in the finder, but as soon as I close down the Airport connection for doing the ethernet backup the whole TC disappears. If I don't close down the Airport I see the backup starting and I se the TC in the finder but I suspect the backup does not use the ethernet cable.
    Where do I go wrong??
    regards,
    pyry

    Welcome to the discussions!
You don't need to use AirPort Utility. Do not turn off your wireless from there.
Simply +turn off the wireless on your computer+ by clicking on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your screen.
Connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule
    Start the backup
When the backup is complete, you can turn the wireless back on at your computer and disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer and the Time Capsule.

  • After initial backup with ethernet cable, how to switch to wireless backups

Initial full backup from MBP to TC via ethernet using TM worked (took 7hrs to do 150GB).
Now, how do I tell TM to do the incremental backups wirelessly?
My TC is connected to my DSL modem and working wirelessly for that, but when I try to click on TM in menu bar and say "back up now" it asks for my user name and password but says "invalid" when I put in my laptop's admin user and PW.
    ACK--now what?
    thanks!

    DuQuoi,,
You may have realized it later but... It was not your own Username and Password it was asking for but the name of your Time Capsule and its' password that it needed to resume backups wirelessly. I know...the dialog box says 'your username and password', but it is incorrect.
Glad it's working for you now.

  • I cant get past the first backup with time machine!

I have been using my iMac Os X 10.5 happily since 2008, but over the last months I have been getting the SBBoD more and more often. Since I have never used time machine before, i.e never done a backup (at this mac, I know its smart and how its done, I'm was just lazy and out of HDs) I feel my time is running out! I configured a brand new WD Elements external HD (2 terrabit, USB 2.0) in time machine, and everything goes smooth untill time machine aborts the backup due to some error. Please help, I am in desperate need of a backup!

heres my crash log from last time. It changes a bit from time to time though.

  • Facebook & eBay Won't Load With Ethernet, But Works With 3G... :/

    Hi Apple fans!
I'm writing in regards to a weird internet problem that I have. Right now I am using an ethernet cable to go online on my Macbook Pro, and every website works. Well, every website but Facebook and eBay.
I'm sure there are just more than those two that don't work, but in any case these are the two that I frequently use that and that need to be working.
Strangely, when I tether my Macbook Pro to my iPhone's 3G, Facebook and eBay start working. Does anyone know why? Are there any solutions that I can try to get access to these websites again?

Try to disable IPv6 in Firefox.
You can also try to reset (power off/on) the router.

  • First backup interrupted

Quick question: I attempted to do the first backup to 1TB TC via wireless, and it failed the first 3 times or so after a few hours (with the connection was interrupted message). So I then did it via Ethernet and it completed successfully and now seems to be automatically backing up fine via wireless.
my question is this: can i trust the initial backup? It was not a single clean run, rather the sum of the fist 3 failed ones + the final successful wired one. Am I better of erasing the disk ,and redoing the first backup via Ethernet? Or is the TM software good at determining how far it got when deteriming where to resume?
Since all backups after the first one are effectively deltas, that first one is clearly pivotal.
    Thanks

    crazy a,
It wouldn't hurt to do another backup, but you should be OK without doing so. If the initial Time Machine backup was ungracefully interrupted, it would have started a new set of backups and ignored the first set. If you only have one disk image on the Time Capsule, then you're OK.
    Cheers!

  • Strange first backup conclusion

Yesterday, around 10pm o'clock, I eventually end up my first backup with Time Machine / Time Capsule. The Mac says "Finishing backup..." on the TM pref panel. I wait. The writing "Finishing backup..." is still there. I wait. Time passes... Always that writing: "Finishing backup...". I wait for an hour (60 min...). I don't know what to do. I don't want to jeopardize more than 24 hours of backup process...
But that writing is still there... So I decide to do something. I click on the TM icon on the menu bar, then I click on "Enter Time Machine...". I enter the Time Machine (congratulation for the scenography...). What I see makes sense: I have two moments freezed in time. The first one is set as Now, the second one is set to "9.52pm" (the time when the writing "Finishing backup..." appeared for the first time).
I leave the Time Machine. Back to my desktop. I found the backup now finished for real. So, what's happened? What if I didn't choose to enter the Time Machine? Would I have waited forever? Or maybe just for coincidence the backup really finished while I was inside the TM?

Now everything's fine. I don't know why, but now my TC works correctly.
