First Backup with TC: REALLY slow...

Hello everybody.
I'm performing a 300 Gb backup with Time Capsule via wi-fi. It is REALLY slow. I started yesterday at 6.00 pm and now (10.20 am) I'm at 100 Gb which means that it will be done by tomorrow afternoon. Somebody is advising me to switch from wi-fi to an ethernet cable.
Is it possible to do that while it's backing up? I mean, is it enough if I connect my mac to TC with an ethernet cable without doing any other operation or do I have to click somewhere?

To be honest Matteo, you are averaging roughly about 6Gb per hour on wi-fi, that's reasonably good for time machine backing up to time capsule. Mine had averaged about 3GB per hour.

  • First Backup with Ethernet but Second.....?????

    As advised, I did my first backup via ethernet connection.
    So I went to airport utility and configured everything for the ethernet cable.
    However, when I want my subsequent backups to be done wirelessly.
    How do I do this?
    I tried just removing the ethernet cable but of course the time capsule couldn't be read. So I plugged it back in and I went back to airport utility and tried to change the setting so that it would join my current wireless connection. I got a green light on both the airport utility window and on my tc, however airport utility was unable to read the new configuration. I got the error "error occurred while reading the configuration" and can't get past that.
    Can someone please tell me how they switched from ethernet to wireless? Am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you.

    I found a tip from the boards. Never mind, thank you all.

  • My computer loads any folders with videos really slow.

    When I open folders that have videos in them it loads them really slowly, but only the first time. Once it's loaded them once it's fine. I recently installed Perian, so I thought that might be the problem, but it's still there and I've uninstalled Perian. I've booted into safe mode several times to try to fix the problem, if there is one, but still nothing. Any ideas??

    How large are the files and folders?
    Building video thumbnails can take awhile, so its normal for it to be slow the first time you view them. After that the data is cached which is why its OK after the first time.
    I rarely see much slowdown on my 2007 4-core Mac Pro, but I do have double your memory, which makes my filesystem and general performance better than yours in some cases.
    Unless you are seeing grossly long times, I'd not worry about it.

  • I cant get past the first backup with time machine!

    I have been using my iMac Os X 10.5 happily since 2008, but over the last months I have been getting the SBBoD more and more often. Since I have never used time machine before, i.e never done a backup (at this mac, I know its smart and how its done, I'm was just lazy and out of HDs) I feel my time is running out! I configured a brand new WD Elements external HD (2 terrabit, USB 2.0) in time machine, and everything goes smooth untill time machine aborts the backup due to some error. Please help, I am in desperate need of a backup!

    heres my crash log from last time. It changes a bit from time to time though.

  • First time Backup with Joined-to-network Time Capsule

    Apologies if this has been already posted, but I haven't found a workable answer.
    I already have a wireless network configured with a Belkin N1 router and I have set up Time Capsule to wirelessly join this network. I know the first backup will be extremely slow wirelessly and would like to use ethernet for the first backup, then change to wireless backups after that.
    I have tried connecting an Cat5 ethernet cable from my laptop to a LAN port on the TC and setting an "Ethernet Only" location in Network Preferences, but I then get a failed backup as TC cannot be mounted, presumeably as TC is configured to join wireless network
    How can I configure my settings so that I can do this or am I stuck with waiting out a first backup wirelessly? Last time I did this before I needed to rest TC to default settings and reconfigured, it took 4 days for 125 GB.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Time Capsule: First backup over ethernet is very slow

    My understanding is that a direct ethernet connection between my Imac and Time Capsule would make the initial backup process faster, but I did not notice any improvement whatsoever and the first backup is proceeding veeeeeeery slow. I was wondering if there was something I was missing when I connected by cable.
    Thank you for your help!

    Felix,
    The first backup I did was wirelessly and it was slow.
    So, I erased the TC Hard Disk and hooked it up via ethernet.
    It went much faster.
    I was doing about 1.1 GB every 5 minutes using ethernet.

  • Strange first backup conclusion

    Yesterday, around 10pm o'clock, I eventually end up my first backup with Time Machine / Time Capsule. The Mac says "Finishing backup..." on the TM pref panel. I wait. The writing "Finishing backup..." is still there. I wait. Time passes... Always that writing: "Finishing backup...". I wait for an hour (60 min...). I don't know what to do. I don't want to jeopardize more than 24 hours of backup process...
    But that writing is still there... So I decide to do something. I click on the TM icon on the menu bar, then I click on "Enter Time Machine...". I enter the Time Machine (congratulation for the scenography...). What I see makes sense: I have two moments freezed in time. The first one is set as Now, the second one is set to "9.52pm" (the time when the writing "Finishing backup..." appeared for the first time).
    I leave the Time Machine. Back to my desktop. I found the backup now finished for real. So, what's happened? What if I didn't choose to enter the Time Machine? Would I have waited forever? Or maybe just for coincidence the backup really finished while I was inside the TM?

    Now everything's fine. I don't know why, but now my TC works correctly.

  • Backup with time machine. external disk is now full and can't reopened!

    Last weekend I tried to do my first backup with the time machine software. For this purpose, I used a external disk containing different kind of documents, pictures and songs. This external disk was used before on a HP (software: windows vista). Unfortunately, during the backup process, I disrupeted the connection and the backup couln't finished. Now, my macbook pro can't recognise the external disk and also on my old HP the external disk is not recognised and no docment can't be opend!! When I look at the properties of this disk, then I see that the external disk is almost full. Does this cause all the problem?
    How do I proceed in order to get back all my documents on this disk?

    You and your wife share one drive for backup?  Do you backup over wifi or move it around?
    Time machine is generally a rock solid tool but you can use it in ways that make it unstable.  I have dedicated drives on 3 macs which run very solid.  I also have one drive on a airport extreme base station (older model which is not supported but does work) that I use with a macbook air.  The macbook air wifi based backup runs into problems a few times a year.  One of my iMacs with a dedicated drive also runs into problems but only when the drive is nearly full.
    It sounds like your drive is nearly full and your using multiple notebooks and possibily wifi......If this is the case, you may be way less frustrated by buying dedicated drives sufficiently big for each computer.  That is the experience I can share with you.
    Good luck.

  • First Ajax request really slow with Generator

    Doing simple Html panel <-> Generator plugin communication and noticed a strange issue with first Ajax call being much slower than the rest. I.e. in panel javascript the first Ajax call duration is 2000ms+ the first time and then consistently ~5ms every time. On the generator plugin side durations are <2ms every time.
    I guess this could be just Chrome initializing some code, but still seems really high. Not the end of the world, but annoying anyhow. Anyone hit similar issues or any other ideas?
    Generator code
    _server = require("http").createServer(onServerRequest)
    _server.listen(8080)
    function onServerRequest (request, response) {
    var start = new Date().getTime()
    console.log("duration=" + (new Date().getTime()-start))
    Panel javascript:
    window._ajax_start = new Date().getTime()
    $.ajax({ url: "http://127.0.0.1:8080/service", async: true })
      .fail(function (jqXHR, msg) { alert("service failed! message=" + msg) })
      .done(function (data) { updateData(data) })
    function updateData(data)
    alert("duration =" + (new Date().getTime()-window._ajax_start))

    Might be Chrome/panel init delay. If you keep Photoshop&panel open and kill & restart Generator, there is no delay. But if Generator is running, closing & opening panel gives the delay every time. In any case panel side seems to be "guilty".

  • Very slow first backup...

    A friend has a MacBook (C2D) and has just bought an iomega USB 2.0 external hard drive. Everything is plugged in and working its formatted (Journaled Case Sensitive(done automatically)), we have set Spotlight not to index the backup drive so we wouldn't encounter any problems.
    Yet the first backup was started at 11pm last night (now 8:45 am) and it has only done 4GB of the 68GB it has to back up.
    Does anyone have any ideas how I can speed this up???

    Apple says that a Time Machine disk requires Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID formatting for Intel Macs and Apple Partition Map for PPC Macs. As complicated as the file structure is for Time Machine I would be inclined to take Apple at their word. Directions for properly formatting a Time Machine disk are here but people with PPC Macs should use Apple Partition Map instead of GUID.
    Anti-virus software can slow Time Machine down so it should be disabled during at least the initial backup. It's also possible that Time Machine could be hanging on a corrupt file. Another possible source of slowdown is having a really large number of tiny files bunched up all together.

    You have nearly run out of disk space.  Either purchase a larger one or start cleaning out the one you have?

  • Finder is really slow ( 15 sec.) after mavericks update on brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive...

    When looking up files it's fine, but when trying to save or open anything through ANY program, i.e. Adobe CS6 programs, Microsoft Word, but also Apple software, finder is really slow (15 sec. or more of the same spinning beach ball) after the OSX Mavericks update on my brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive... This ***** really bad because it totally disturbs the smooth workflow I bought the iMac for in the first place...
    Any suggestions?
    Already tried 'clearing the plist file' through terminal; didn't work... Rebooting (obviously), didn't work.
    Will there be a fix soon?
    It's costing me way to much time waiting for the finder to show it's content when working.
    Any official word from Apple on this?

    I had a similar problem.  Tried repairing disk permissions, tried cleaning up with onyx and applejack with no luck.  Finally what did work was simply starting up in safe mode (hold shift key down after restart) and it sorted itself out
    Hope this works for you

  • Backups really slow after 10.5.5

    All,
    after the upgrade to 10.5.5 TM (I have a 1Gb TC) became really, really slow. It takes just a few minutes to start the backup, but then it takes ages to complete it. Now after almost 3 hours it is still at 537Kb out of 1,9Gb.
    Is that normal ? I saw in other posts that TM requires a deep analysis after the upgrade, but since it appears it has taken few minutes to prepare and now is very slow to execute, what's going on ?
    Any suggestion on how to speed it up is welcome.

    After almost 1 full day to complete the first backup after the upgrade, it is now back to normal speed.

  • 3.0 creeping slow first backup?

    I have waited two hours for my second generation Touch with the new update to do it's first backup; I "Xed" out of it. Everything is there and working. But when I try to do another backup; same thing; just creeping along very slow for a back-up. Anyone have a suggestion here?? Thanks. Paula

    i've tried resyncing the touch sooo many times. I'm just leaving it this time hoping to let it sync (although there was time I exited the backup and it continued to sync calendars... only it wanted to change my 75+ calendar entries on my outlook!)
    PS: I've reseted the ipod inbetween and it's still crawling. sometimes 1/3 others 1/2 way through right now it stuck at 80%! the closest so far (the funny thing is that this time round it sped all the way to that point then stopped).
    I wanna go for a run with my ipod touch
    (Seriously Apple, after all the hoopla of how great 3.0 was going to be everything seemed to be delivered at 80% - bluetooth with only AD2P support - no headsets, no AVRCP?) geez lets see if i can sync the darn thing

  • Firefox becomes really slow then eventually unresponsive when loading a page with many hires images. Unsual high memory usage up to 2gigs just for firefox. Was never a problem with v3.6.

    When loading a page with many hires images, Firefox becomes really slow and scrolling becomes jumpy then eventually becomes completely unresponsive. Unusual high memory usage of up to 2gigs just for firefox when loading these pages. This was never a problem with v3.6.

    I encountered the same type of problem. Firefox running terribly slowly and slowing down my entire machine (Core i5 with 256GB SSD). Searching the forums, I found a couple of things about troubleshooting performance issues, one of which was to use '''hardware acceleration''', that is on by default. It was turned on on my PC, '''so I tried deactivating it, and it worked!'''
    So doing the exact opposite as Mozilla support said solved the problem. It is really a pain now to work with Firefox. I'm using it because I have no choice, but I'd recommend IE and Chrome over Firefox... Whatever, the market will decide once Firefox has become to crappy...
