First bluray - share, compressor or DVD SP4?

Want to create my first bluray - have an internal bluray burner in my early 2008 Mac Pro...have a pro res timeline in FCP 7. Not yet rendered. So if I go to share, bluray, do I have to first render the timeline? Or does it just do it for me? How can I make custom menu and add custom menu buttons to this via that share/bluray dialogue box? If I want to use DVD SP 4, do I have to first make a QT mov, bring that into Coompressor, then that mpeg 2 into DVD SP4? Then burn a bluray out of DVD SP 4?
What's best workflow for making a custom 3 button menu, burning to bluray?
Thanks much!
K

It's either Share or Export self contained and use Compressor.
There is no support for authoring blu ray in DVD SP.
You might want to consider Toast 9/10 or Encore CS3/4 if you want to do more than a basic blu ray disc.

  • Help with Workflow FCP to Compressor then DVD Pro and Shaky footage

Hi, I am new to using a MAC and also to Final Cut Studio so if this question has been asked before or seems obvious then I offer my apologies.
I have a clip on the timeline which is a little shaky but I need to use it. I have added a SmoothCam filter and when I playback in FCP all seems OK however after sending to Compressor then eventually to DVD Pro the clip shows as being shaky again, almost as if the filter had been deleted in the Compressor. Could someone perhaps talk me through the correct workflow I should be using and maybe suggest where I am going wrong please. As I said this is my first attempt to author a DVD with FCP on my MAC.
The footage was captured on my Panasonic Home camcorder. The settings in my camera were set at 1920 x 1080 HG mode for High Definition.
In my camera user guide it refers to the images being based upon the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec so should I have set something similar when capturing into FCP.
    Any advice would be welcomed.

    Fred

Hi Mike I tried everything to try and resolve this one, I tried all combinations of field dominance. I also followed the recommendations from the Apple help to use the intermediate codec (search under AVCHD in the Help files) If I get anywhere I will mail you

PS I had some advice from another forum group who said to try and export a Quicktime movie into DVD Pro and not to send to Compressor, I will try that later and see if that helps.

  • Muxing problem in DVD SP4

I'm having a problem when I "build" the project in DVD SP4.1. There are periodic digital defects in the video that are in the video TS folder when it is played with DVD Player 4.6.5 and when the burned disc is played on a home DVD player. The defects are in the exact same spots on both. They are not, however, on the mpeg 2 when played in DVD SP4.1 either from the timeline or using the simulator, the playback is flawless. The mpeg 2 was created with compressor 2.1 at 7.2 mgps average with a max of 9, VBR and two pass best. No error message appeared. The OS 10.4.3 was installed from disc and then updated to 10.4.6. During the mpeg 2 compression and during the build, ethernet and log in's were turned off. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Henrik

    Hi David,
Thank you for the reply. For the last six months I've been having multiple problems with my computer, including not being able to open DVD SP4 after installing Final Cut Studio, Compressor not working, the spinning beach ball of death and other issues. I've traced the problem to two 1GB memory boards I bought at Comp-USA. They are their own brand and apparently not Mac compatible. I pulled the boards, leaving me with 3.5Gig, formatted the drive, re-installed OS10.4.3, updated to 10.4.6, installed Studio and everything works perfectly! Thank you so much for all your help, it is greatly appreciated.

  • Is it necessary to use Compressor for DVD Studio Pro*

I am making a FCP X movie and when it's finished I want to put it on a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. I have done this before but now I'm wondering if I should first export it to Compressor 4 and then to DVD Studio Pro. I understand that if I was puting it on YouTube or an iPod device I would need to Compress it however why would I need to go to Compresss 4 first if ultimately going to DVD Studio Pro? Would I get a better Codec quality then what I get from exporting in FCP X using their default Compression format i.e. Quicktime? Should I use an Apple ProRes Compression from Compressor 4? I guess I really don't understand the encoding quality options very well however I do want the best quality on my finished DVD. The DVD or Sequence is somewhere around 20 - 25 minutes if that makes any difference in your response.

The following applies equally to both C4 and C3.5 (which you have, if you have DVDSP). There is really very little that C4 can do compared to C3.5.
Bring your movie into Compressor as the source file. Drag the MPEG2 and Dolby Digitlal presets into the Batch window. Set the destination where you want your output file to be saved to.
If you are using HD material, open the Inspector>>Frame Controls and activate Frame Controls. Set Resize filter to Best. (If your source file is SD skip Frame Controls.) In the Encoding section, click on Quality and in mode change to CBR. Set your bit rate to 7.0.
Test a short representative section of your movie by marking a range in the Preview window. Submit.
Take your test file and drag it into the DVDSP asset pane. Do your build. Open it in DVD Player and see what you think. If you like the results, proceed with your project. If you're not satisfied, tweak your settings and test again.
    Good luck.

  • G5( DVD SP4) WILL NOT READ AC-3 Files

I have spent more time and read more papers on Compressor and DVD P4 than on any other Apple software.
I have encoded from FCP4.5 a 27 min project using compressor, all the settings seem fine and the visuals are good.
I import the assets into DVD 4 and they import all ok and I get green lights on the asset log etc.
In the timeline the visuals are ok but I cannot get the ac-3 Dolby to read at all.
I have imported the pcm sound directly into DVD and it works fine as do Aiff files.
I have updated all my software to check I have all the codecs etc and all is up to date.
I have re-encoded the sound again and checked all the settings and the same thing happened. DVD S is not reading the dolby sound.
The data seems to be there ok but the silence is deafening!!

How are you monitoring your audio? Analogue or SP/DIF (optical output).
Have you set your audio output preferences in the SImulator tab of your DVDSP preferences?
Check your audio output settings in your "Audio MIDI Setup" utility as well.

  • What happened to share to a DVD from iMovie?

I upgraded to the latest iMove... CAN NO LONGER SHARE TO A DVD?????? What gives?

It's been removed from the latest iMovie.  Actually with the old iMovie one should use the Share ➙ Media Browser option instead of the Share ➙ iDVD option as the latter gives poorer results.
Now one should export out of iMovie at 480p and manually add the move file to the iDVD project.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Can I avoid re-encoding of .mov files with Compressor and DVD Studio Pro?

    Hello,
I've had some projects banned at one of the tracking sites because my iMovie 6.0.1/iDVD 7.1.1 workflow involves re-encoding of the iMovie .mov file to MPEG 2 when authored in iDVD. I did some research, and was advised that I could get around the re-encoding by using Compressor and DVD Studio Pro instead of iDVD. But, when I import the iMovie file to Compressor for authoring in DVD Studio Pro, the result is another MPEG 2 file. So, am I missing something, or is there no way for me to avoid re-encoding with Apple video production tools.
    Thanks for any assistance.

The simple fact that you have to encode your files into an mpeg-2 stream means that you're going to experience a loss in quality.  Check the bitrate of your DV files.  The max bitrate for all of the elementary steams (audio, video) on a DVD is 9.8mbps.  So if your source has a higher bitrate than that... you're going to experience "lossiness."
However there are some tricks that I've read about that increase the overall quality of compression... and yes they are for windows.  Check out AVIsynth and MeGUI... there is a learning curve to learning these tools though.  I never followed through with it.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention that learning these things takes TIME.  Quality encoding takes much longer than realtime.
You can also check out some higher quality mpeg2 encoders like cinemacraft and HC encoder, although the former costs $$$.  The quality you get from these encoders are much better than what you have in iDVD and DVDSP/Compressor.

  • DVD SP4 and Toast 7

    Hello Folks,
I did it! Yes, I decided to purchase the Final Cut Studio bundle.
Thanks to everyone that help me with my questions on this forum. You are all very kind.
I have a quick question for the DVD SP4 Pros:
I noticed that some people on this forum use Toast 7 for burning DVD's.
Doesn't DVD SP4 burn the DVD's for you?
What are the advantages, if any, for purchasing Toast 7 as a companion to DVD SP4?
    Thanks again!

  • Exporting HDV with compressor to DVD Studio Pro

Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? When I export an HDV project using compressor for DVD Studio Pro and choose the 4:3 ratio, my video ends up squeezed horizontally. I would like to "chop" off the sides so that my subjects don't look unnaturally skinny. I just need a sample workflow to see what I am doing wrong. I'm rather new to DVD Studio Pro, so appologies blah, blah, blah. Thanks in advance.

    Ooops, sorry

Click on the Preset You Want In General (or make a new One)
That will open Inspector, then click on the second icon from the right (geometry) The crop is there

  • Lost Compressor and DVD Studio Pro apps

I just finished a project on FCP and when I tried to export it to Compressor, I got a message that says " application not installed properly". I checked the dock and noticed a "question mark" on the application icon of both the Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. I then search the two of them in the Applications Table but couldn't find them there either. I inserted the DVD Studio Pro software disc and attempted to re-install the application. It was using space on the hard drive but it still not showing in the apps table. What is going on ? Can somebody help me with this ?!

Thanks Tom for the reply, I did as you recommended and was able to reinstall DVD studio Pro, but the Compressor is still missing. I mean, the icon is there but when I click to open the app, it only show the a bigger picture of the application but it doesn't open.

  • Setting in compressor to DVD Studio pro

    Hello
    Need some help with compressor.
The matter is that I have a QT video ( Video Format: RLE. Codec ID: rle. 35min. Bit rate 226Mbps 720 x 576 PAL. Display ratio 5:4. Frame rate mode: variable. Frame rate: 25. 55GB. Bits( Pixelframe): 22,217. Audio 16 bits, 48 khz, stream size. 385Mb) which I want to burn in a DVDSP in DVD Studio Pro.
To do so I am trying to compress in compressor first.
I have tried with these setting: video CBR one pass 8 bitrate ( he first try was with 7, but almost with the same results= lines or pixels in the parts with camara movements), format: M2V 720 x 576 PAl CCIR 601 (16:9) Open GOP. GOP structure: IBP 6. Audio AIFF 16 bits, 48 KHz
To try to avoid lines in the moving parts of the video I also selected desenlaced filter (to convert to progressive), the result is pixels in the parts of the video when the camara moves...
I have selected CBR one past because I have read in several forums that is the best option in compressor, I have tried VBR with no goog results...
I used AIFF adio because the first time I used AC3, the audio of the video had an error. In addition there are space in the dvd  as the video ony take 2,6 GB aprox.
    So, my questions are:
    1. What is the best solution to avoid this lines/ pixels in the part of the video with movements?
    2. Do do think I am doing something that could be improve ( should I change some settings?)
    3. Is it maybe to use VBR with compressor marks the best solution? Where are these marks in the compressor interface?
Thanks a lot, I will really appreciatte any suggestion
    Sincerely,
    jey

    Hi Jerry,
To respond to your info request: my "settings" indicate my Editing Timebase is 23.98.
    Moreover...
    Editing Timebase: 23.98
    1920x1080 HDTV 1080i 16:9
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    XDCAM EX 1080p24 VBR 35Mb/s
    Quality: 100%
    Audio: 48khz
    Audio Depth: 16bit
Indeed, to achieve a film look I undertook the following steps in production and post...
    shot 24p
shot with a Letus Adapter and Zeiss lenses
created an appealing depth of field where possible
avoided various "videofying" shots, like fast pans and so forth
crushed the blacks in color correction
used Nattress and adjusted the S curves in certain areas
I'm just wondering if I missed a step somewhere when it came down to designating the frame rate in Apple Compressor. When I saw the 29.97 frame rate designation in DVD Studio Pro, it surprised me. And then watching my movie on DVD (which is always a slightly difficult experience) I was really feeling like I was seeing an undesirable crisp video-ish feel that I hadn't seen before outputing to DVD.
    obliged for the help,

  • Error message when using "Share...DVD"

I'm trying to make a DVD of a project in FCP X (Trial version) and I have been able to share to Youtube etc, but when I try to make a DVD I get the following error message:
"The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1.)"
What does this mean? Any way around it?
    Thanks,

    Tom,
No, I don't seem to have Compressor software installed...is that part of FCP, or a separate application?
Is that used to burn DVD's from FCP?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

  • H.264 .mov files problem with 2-pass vbr in DVD SP4

I have converted some VHS tapes by connecting the VCR to my camcorder (as a AC/DC bridge) and the camcorder to my macbook pro via firewire, and record using FCP into .mov files.
However, these files are huge (13 GB for an hour), and so I shrinked them down by exporting them (using QT pro) into .mov file via h.264 codec.
However, when I try to convert these already shrinked .mov files into mpeg2 files via compressor 2 (so that I can made a DVD in DVD SP), the files become corrupt when I use 2-pass vbr. (Frame freezes on play back in DVD SP and QT pro). It's OK with 1 pass vbr though.
If I convert those huge .mov files via mpeg4 in QT pro rather than h.264, there is not problem with 2-pass vbr.
So my delemma is: shall I store the files using mpeg4, or h.264?
I am under the impression that h.264 gives a better quality for the same file size than mpeg4, but 2-pass vbr will give a better quality than 1-pass vbr if I want to burn it on a DVD.
    Thanks in advance.

In general recompressing from VHS to your computer to H.264 (or MPEG 4) then to m2v is going to hurt quality, so if you are able to get extra Hard Drives and store that way, or even a inexpensive camera with a firewire in/out you are probably better off (though with VHS it may be hard to tell regardless)
Also if you at least go straight the first time to m2v and check to make sure it looks okay to you, you may want to make sure to do that first
That being said, H.264 and One-Pass should in all likelihood (I have not tried recently, did it a while ago just to test things) will be better than MPEG-4 2-Pass, depends on the settings. Also if you try 1-Pass H.264 it seems to work with Compressor.
