First build.. so excited, yet so nervous. advise on Windows 7 or 8 please?

I am starting from scratch and have never attempted this before. since I will be starting from scratch I was wondering if anyone would recommed Windows 8, or just get 7 for now. Any other advise would be welcomed.
for budget reasons and really only seasonal use I will not be going overboard on this rig. (plus it is my first time I wanted it to be gentle, ha)

>Just drag 'em around. They're simple tiles.
Wife now has her new computer... she is calling HER "Godzilla" because she is so big & powerful
I figured out how to work with her new Start screen... as you say, just drag them around... and new installs (so far) are automatically put on the Start screen
I found that clicking an icon tile goes to an AP screen for the small programs, and to the Desktop screen for large programs
She "loves" the new Start screen, and has already moved the icon tiles around to suit her needs... and has gone to the MS "store" for a couple free AP's
She is still figuring out to do some things (she also switched to Google Chrome instead of IE) but she has mentioned, several times, that she is impressed by the SPEED of what she has now (as she should be, with an i7 3770 and 32Gig of ram!)
I have no problems with Win7 so will stay with what I have... but if (more likely, when) I build a new computer, I will have to decide if I want to stay with Win7 or switch to Win8... by then, she will have more than one day's experience with Win8, so she will be able to help me decide

  • Camera guy needs help with his first build

    Hello all-
I work in a video rental house, and I'm sick of renting out $13,000 cameras and $16,000 lens packages all the time and not having the capability to get the gear for free and make my own projects on my own time!  To that end, I'll happily trade any video camera / production knowledge for advice on this build I'm working on.
I’ve put together this modest $3,000 build list for a Premiere CS5 / After Effects CS5 machine.  This will be my first build, so I’m somewhat new to this, and I’d like to solicit the board’s input on the following questions:
    1)      What do you think of my MOBO / CPU / RAM pairings?  I’m not really married to any of these components, and if I should swap any one of these out for overall performance increases, I’d be happy to.
    2)      How does my drive setup look?  Have I picked any clunkers?
    3)      I’d love to hear any alternate suggestions for 20inch or so monitors in the $150 range, or quality desktop speakers in the $100 range.
    DISK SETUP- $640

    Leo,
Nice system specification! Like Harm, I don't have much to suggest - only a comment on the keyboard!
I personally went with the Logitech K800, which is also wireless, after comparing it with the K340 in a store that had both on display. I preferred the feel of this more expensive model and am still very happy with the purchase 6 months later. The K800 also adds backlighting which I love for editing in a dimly lit room.

  • Seeking advice on my first build, $3000 budget, please critique. Thanks!

    Hey all,
Been lurking around here for some time now and I must say it's been interesting. A bit of background before we get to the good part: I'm a freelance website designer (one that does a lot of graphic design), so my workhorses are Ps and Ai, but lately I've been getting more and more freelance film work. I've reached a crossroads as my current system struggles to handle the load in Pr, especially in AE. I've decided to build a kickass system that will hopefully improve my workflow enough to take me more down the film path (in addition to dominating my Ps and Ai needs). This will be my first build, so all advice is welcome and much appreciated. I've tried pretty hard to do some research before posting, and here's what I've come up with:
    The Build:
    Category
    My Choice
    Price($USD)
    Comments
    CPU
    Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor
    569.99
Is it worth waiting until the Ivy Bridge 4930K comes out? Looks like that won't be till the fall..
    GPU
    EVGA 04G-P4-3687-KR GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ w/Backplate 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
    589.99
Would you choose the 680 over the 580?
    mobo
ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
    324.99
I honestly know nothing about mobos.. should I be concerned that this is from 2011? Is this overkill?
    RAM
    Kingston 64GB (4 x 16GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ECC Registered Server Memory DR x4 Model
    519.99
Is Kingston a good brand? This seems like quite a deal.
    disks
    1x Samsung Pro 840 series 128GB SSD, 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB 7200 RPM RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
    420.97
SSD for OS&programs, 1HDD for media, 1HDD for cache and exports. This is the area I'm thinking I might improve on as I'm a bit under budget. What additional disks/purposes do you recommend? Seems like I shouldn't bother with RAID unless I get more disks.
    PSU
CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC
    129.99
Seems like a good PSU/cooling unit. Don't know much here though.
    Case
Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-BL Black Pearl Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
    149.99
I like that this has 2 audio jacks. Has 8 internal 3.5'' drive bays, 4 external 5.25'' drive bays, and 9 "expansion slots", whatever those are. It does not mention 2.5'' bays, so I assume it has none. Does that mean I won't be able to mount my SSD? Should I go with a different case for that reason?
    Total:
    2689.91
So I'm a bit under budget. What do you think would be the best components to upgrade?
I'm thinking I might get 3 more Barracuda 3TBs (or maybe smaller to cut the cost a bit), put 4 of them in RAID3 for media, keep the leftover drive for exports and scratch. Does that sound like a good idea? If I did this, I think I would also get this controller: Areca ARC-1213-4X PCI-Express 2.0 x8 Low Profile SATA / SAS 4-Port PCIe 2.0 External SAS/SATA RAID Controller. Coming in at 389.99, it's not cheap, but I am willing to go a bit over budget if it will make a big enough difference. With this RAID setup, I'd be looking at around $3300, which is pretty much my max. Thanks in advance for your help!!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I will be running CS5.5, probably going to go for the cloud upon release of CS???

Mkudisch, it looks like a great PC you're going to build, it looks pretty much like the one i've built a couple months ago, I'm not a master pc builder but I would like to give you a little advice about the componenets:
CPU: Great choice, I have the same cpu.
GPU: it looks like a great gpu, just one thing if you plan to overclock it you should buy one with better airflow (at least 2 fans), I have an asus gtx 670 4 gb.
MOBO: great choice, probably you already now it, it is a 2011 model but if your saying it because the name says LGA 2011 it means that it is socket 2011 the one for sandy bridge-e cpus, (I have a P9X79 WS mobo)
RAM: probably I'm wrong but as far as I know all Asus X79 mobos will only take 8gbs sticks per slot and not 16 gbs ones, you should probably look for 8x8gbs quad channel, I have G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 8X8gbs and they're great, if you want search for any other brand model but first check if you mobo will take 16gbs sticks per slot.
Disks: great SSD, I've heard a lot of great things about samsung 840 PRO.
PSU: I think you should consider at least a 1000W PSU, in case you want to add another gpu or more hdds in the future you will be already covered, Corsair it's a great brand also stay away from any Rosewill PSUs I bought a 1300w lightning series and that piece of crap exploded 30 seconds after turning it on.
Case: don't know about that case but it looks like a great choice I have a HAF X 942.
Also you forgot about a CPU cooler, there's a lot of great cpu coolers, I would recommend you Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 that's the one I have (and it's great if you plan to overclock you i7-3930K) just make sure the cpu cooler you buy is compatible with you cpu, if you buy Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 make sure it will fit in you case because that cooler is HUGE!.
Well that's my advice like I told you before I'm not an expert or anything just another guy like you who built a PC similar to the one you want to build.

  • MSI RS480M2-IL (my first build)

    Hi all:
This is my first post here.  I need your help.  I don't know much about pc, but I'm going to try to build one anyway.  All my components should arrive by next Tuesday(7-12).  I will build it on Wednesday(7-13).  I want to build a reliable pc.  I don't want to tweak the Bios to make it faster.  For now I have two questions: 1) Do I need to use the CD-IN connector or the Aux Line-IN connector(I don't have a sound card)?  2) In the Bios, under South Onchip IDE Device, there is IDE Prefetch Mode.  What do I do with this?  Enabled? or Disabled?  If anyone here have any tips, please let me know.  Your reply is greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.

I have never had any problems with leaving the plug and play in bios enabled.  I have however seen that some people disable it.  I would leave it enabled.  I wouldn't worry about "tweaking" your bios too much right now.  But there are a couple tweaks you should look into before your big day.
I would check out what agp apeture setting you should use for your ati card.  Most people would have you set it on the amount of memory you have availble on the card it's self (256mb).  Do a little research now and find out.  Make sure you set your cas settings (for your memory) to what corsair recommends for your particular memory.  You can find these at http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=128 .  Also check out what the voltage should be too, it's probably 2.5v but check it out to be certain.
It's good to ask questions if this is your first build.  I have built over 30 pc's and I still have questions.  And the people over here at the msi forums are great.

If you've more money then you can go with 7900GTX rather than 7600GT
i agree with kakarocht. you are better off with a 7900GTX which will beat 2 x 7600GT and will also leave room for another one if you plan to add it later. and since the prices are going down for the 7900 series, i would say it is also a better deal.

  • Trying to sign in to itunes store via windows xp...get to id and pwd and then it says "This Apple ID has not yet been used with the itunes store...please review acct. info"  Well how can I use it if you don't let me log in!?

Tyring to sign in to iTunes store viz windows XP...I get to entering my ID and PWD and then the message pops up "This Apple ID has not yet been used with the iTunes store...please review acct. info."  HELP!  I have cleared DNS, checked proper date & time and deleted SC folder from programs like support suggested--all to no avail.

The first part of the error is true - I haven't used the AppleID with the iTunes store.
Try here >  Using an existing Apple ID with the iTunes Store and Mac App Store
received the upgrade code using this same AppleID, so I don't think I can use a different AppleID.
    Correct.
It's clearly not a cookie issue..
As for cookies. Quit the App Store. Now open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder.
Type this exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Cookies
Click Go the move the   com.apple.appstore.plist   file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch the App Store.

  • Getting Error 08 when attempting to build exe using LabVIEW 2009 (32 bit) and Windows 7

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

For any who may be having this problem here is a little more information and what I did to get around the issue. (so far)
First I tried a simple vi with a while loop in a project and made an executable build. This worked. I double checked on an XP machine the project that I was having problems with. The executable was built successfully. I changed back to the Windows 7 machine.  On the program compatibility trouble shooter I started the LabVIEW 2009 (32 bit) in the XP service pack 2 mode and selected run as administrator. The build was successful.
Note: was logged in as administrator and program would build a simple executable in Windows 7. The executable that would not build had more complex code that included serial communication and calls to lvanlys.dll and nilvaiu.dll.
This may not be a complete fix to the problem but at least in this one case it worked.

    Hi there,
I am planning to use Labview 2010 in a short time.
But before I'm going to use it I have some questions.
I know it is possible to run Labview 2010 in an XP environment. But is it also possible to, when running Labview 2010 on a XP system, to build a project to a version that is useful in a Windows 7 environment?
Or do I have to run Labview 2010, when I want to build a project that is useful on a Windows 7 system, on a system with Windows 7?
    Please give me some information.
I hope to hear from one of you soon.

    Hi all,
I am using NWDS 7.0, Now I want to open a pop up on click of a action link.
There are two DCs DC-A and DC-B.
I am calling action from DC-A to DC-B. DC-B contains view of pop up window.
In DC-A I am using intreface controller of DC-B by using used coponents.
Now In the DC-B used components I have created one fireplugin which is connected ith pop up view of DC-B and that firplugin is called from DC-A action to transport data from Dc-A to DC-B.
Problem : when I click first time to open pop-up window then event handler is not called but the windows opened. When I close that window and again open the transported data start displaying on pop up window.
So can you please help me that why first time data is not transported to pop up window.
    Thanks
    Kaushal

You'll need to use an OARawTextBean. Oracle doesn't support opening links in new windows using OAFormattedTextBean. Just be aware that you'll need to set the CSS class in the HTML as well if you need it formatted a certain way.

No one here can help you, nor can/will Apple. If you don't know the Apple ID/Password that was originally used to activate this phone, you won't be able to re-activate it. And, if the previous owner tells you that he/she doesn't know it, you're out of luck. You simply won't be able to use the phone for anything other than a paperweight.
    Called Activation Lock.

It sounds like it is time to restore from the backups you made just before making the disk changes.
You can re-partition and restore your backups.  If you didn't make backups first (you were warned that it might damage things and to make sure you had a good backup) then you will need to repartition everything and reinstall from scratch...
