First Character Typed Often Not Received

Ever since upgrading, I've been noticing that many usernames and passwords that I type into character fields in Safari and elsewhere have been missing the first letter I type. I then have to add that first character or retype the string.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong or not noticing, but it's definitely different. Maybe the field has been selected, but the cursor isn't there and ready for entry?

So glad to hear many others are having this problem. I wasn't sure if I had a dirty laptop keyboard from leaving the lid up all the time. It might also be that I use TypeIt4Me which requires I have 'Enable Access for Assistive Devices' checked in the Universal Access system preferences. I think I tried disabling TypeIt4Me quite a while ago when I first noticed this issue but it didn't fix the problem. I've also rarely noticed that the first TWO characters get missed, but that's not anywhere near as common as missing the first one.
This is a REALLY annoying problem...

  • First character typed not recognized

    Hi,
I'm using a macBookpro with Tiger 10.4.11 from five months and I suddenly realized that the first
character typed in different fields like 'Search' or other in general is often not recognized.
Anyone can help in that ?
    bye
    Roberto

There have been many, I mean a real lot, of posts on this subject. I used to have the issue myself. In your case it may be a MBP issue as stated here.
    Some more posts.
The older threads I was involved in are archived now.
    My solution was this;
First, try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
I unplugged all firewire and USB so there were no conflicts with their buses.
    Then I Repaired Permissions.
Then I downloaded the 10.4.11 Intel combo update from this site, not Software Update. You can apply it right over what you have now with no issues.
Repaired Permissions again (this procedure should be used with all updates).
Then I ran the free Yasu to run scripts.
I also did a repair with DiskWarrior, but you may not own that.
This solved the issue for me.
I would also register a complaint in Apples feed back area.
    Good Luck!

  • First character typed in a field disappears

After having navigated into a field (alpha, date or number) either by a mouse click or by tabbing, the first character typed into the field disappears. No trigger is fired (checked with Tools->Preferences->Runtime tab->Debug messages chacked).
If there is already some data in the field, I can reposition the caret, but the first character typed forces the caret to go to the beginning of the field and the character typed disappears.
Behaves similarly in forms 6 and forms 9.
    Any ideas about the reason?

    Hi,
I get this a lot too. It is, as you say when it has been left for a short while and you go to type and it misses the first letter. There was an update for a keyboard issue recently from Apple but it did not seem to cure this problem for me. It is completely intermittent though. Sometimes it's ok, like now, and others it is bad. Cheers.

  • First character typed in a safari 7.1 form not being recognised

Since I have updated safari to 7.1 on OS X 10.9.5 the first character in a form (such as a password) is not being recognised.  Up to now this has been working fine.  Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone know a fix?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Why is the first character typed delayed and showing up as the 3rd or 4th character?

For about 2-3 weeks now, I've been running across this problem. It shows up all over the OS. I can be typing something into Spotlight or Safari and a lot of other apps and the first initial character typed doesn't show itself until the 3rd or 4th letter typed. It is really getting annoying.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

In the meantime, plug your USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it will charge, but slowly.
     Cheers, Tom

  • First character missing sometimes when i type

it doesn't happen all the time but when i type something the first letter is missing iv'e noticed it mainly happening in safari
    any suggestions? thanks

hmm, mine seems to be fixed
history: ever since 10.4.3 the first character typed after an idle period doesn't register, tried combo updater, 10.4.4, blah blah, problem got more/less frequent but still hit several times a day
three days ago by chance i ran disk utility and selected "verify disk", it said i had an "illegal name" and bailed, booting the tiger dvd and running disk utility could not fix it, nor could booting single user und using fsck
some surfing turned up an issue linked to vietnamese characters in filenames that are installed as part of adobe creative suite 2 (and also in some standalone cs2 apps)
this causes problems that once present can eventually result in serious damage to the disk structure, disk warrior was cited as being able to detect/fix the damage (apparently several other similar apps will not do it)
two days ago i got dw, it showed several of the adobe-linked issues as well as a few other (imho minor) things, it fixed the disk
since then the missing keystroke problem seems to be fixed too
maybe this is just chance, maybe the zillion reboots did it, maybe starting single user did it, could be anything really
so i decided to carry out the ultimate test and tempt fate by posting that mine seems ok now
i'm not suggesting dw fixes the missing keystroke, but if you have any adobe cs2 apps it might be worth seeing if disk utility shows any issues when you choose the "verify disk" option

  • I have been successfully sending out e-mails to all people listed in a Group Address but yesterday only some of the people received their mail. Today I split the list, 25 in each Group Address, again, the same people did not receive their e-mail. Why?

I have been successfully sending out e-mails each month to about 50 people whose addresses are listed under a Group Name. Yesterday about half of the e-mails were received, the other half weren't. So I tried splitting the group into 2 separate Groups, again the list who didn't receive the first mailing again did not receive the second mailing. There does not seem to be anything that connects the recipients or non-recipients. They have a mix of providers, it was not just the first half of list that was affected, it appears to be totally random.  Any suggestions?

Neither of these error message look like they're from Exchange.

Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)

Are those from NDRs someone in your organization received, or are they from NDRs received by a sender outside your organization?
Is 68.232.130.28 your IP address? The IP address resolves to the name esa2.firstam.iphmx.com. Is that a MX for the recipient's domain?

  • Batch file gives error "is not recognized as internal command.." after first character

For every batch file I create, I receive the same error displaying after only running the first character in the file: ' d' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable command or batch file.
This occurs whether I run 'dir' cd '../..' or java.exe
I've confirmed the path environment variable has the correct paths, cmd.exe is assigned to comspec, I'm running as admin, etc. What have I not setup correctly to run batch files. I can run these same commands directly at the command line.
I'm running the latest version of 8.1, on Toshiba Satellite C855

  • Delay when typing in Safari, the first character is always missing.

Recently when I go to type in a address or text in the search window, the first first character is always gone. Resulting in me having to back space to the beginning to re-type the first character.
My father is a Mac user too and he experiences the same thing.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
The problem you described sounds reminiscent of a problem many MacBook, MacBook Pro and even PowerBook G4 users have been experiencing. If you do a Discussions-wide search for the phrase "first key" in quotation marks, you'll get an idea of how wide-spread the problem is. Apple recently released a firmware update for the MacBook and MacBook Pros, but reports of first-key-unrecognition persists.
While I hope your problem isn't of this variety, the point I'm trying to illustrate is that if it is, Apple has yet to pin down a proper fix for it. Until they do though, perhaps some workarounds you can try are banging on a modifier key before typing anything, or clicking twice to ensure focus has been given to a window element and not just the window.

  • Mac Book Keyboard Still Misses First Character When Typing....

    Hi all,
This is an old problem that was supposed to be fixed with a software and firmware update but it still seems to happen on my MB. The first character I type generally does not register. Anyone else with this problem? I already had the keyboard replaced. Cheers.

    Hi,
I don't use growl... so I can't say if it may be related to the problem. In my experience, I cannot relate the problem to anything, neither could people here. There used to be a huge thread on this problem, but it got deleted (maybe because the issue is considered solved).
Another thing that makes it hard to isolate the cause is that it seems impossible to replicate a situation in which the keystrokes are missed. Sometimes I have the problem once or twice a month, then there are days when it happens all the time. I also think it was there from the beginning, but I'm not sure about that, since it took me some time getting used to the keyboard, and I may have attributed missed keystrokes to my lack of typing skills
Support told me to install OSX again, and see if the problem is still there. I could not do it so far since I really need my MB for work right now, but I will try it and report back. I think if it doesn't vanish then, it can't be a software problem. Any opinions on this?

  • The first character I type often ends up at the end of the word.

It's been going on since at least Snow Leopard, I'm on a clean Lion install now. It happens relentleslly in Safari. When I type in a search or fill a form on a webpage - even something simple as google, the first character I type often ends up at the end of the first word I type. Sometimes it ends up in the middle. If anyone esle has even observed it, i'd like to hear just to confirm I'm not mad.

  • Keyboard problem - First character not showing up

    Hi all....
I've noticed a funny quirk on my mid 2006 iMac. Lately, when I try to type anything in either a form field or in Spotlight, the first character I type doesn't show up. Only after hitting it again will it do so.
I tried resetting the PRAM, checking preferences, and doing permissions repairs, but nothing seems to work. Not sure what to do next. Would a firmware reset from the Apple downloads page work?
    I'm on Tiger 10.4.11

which board is it - the newer style aluminum / silver ones?
there is one, but will only install if you have 10.5.2 & not sure if it covers your issue. I had this on my macbook pro which did get firmware updates after leopard too...

  • HT3529 I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off?  I can usually send the message, but often do not receive messages until I either have wifi or turn cellular on.

I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off and without wifi? I can send the message but often do not receive messages from others, iPhone or other, until  I turn on cellular or wifi.

Depends on the type of Message.
SMS messages will send and receive with data off.  and while you can guarantee you send using SMS you cannot guarantee that whoever replies to you does also. They may be replying thorugh iMessage if they are using iPhones.
However Android should be sending through SMS.
You can turn off iMessage if you want to, though people with limtied SMS text messaging in their plans may not appreciate it, and stop messaging you.

  • Can not run the calc scripts by mxl, if the first character is Number

I found that if you create the calc scrpt like 1abc.csc. You can not run it by mxl. I tried for times but do not know the reason for that. I found that you can use number in the name of the calc scripts(like abc1.csc, a1bc.csc), but not for the first character(like 1abc.csc).
    Below is my mxl scripts:
    ×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
    login admin identified by password on localhost;
    spool on to 'C:\abc.log' ;
    execute calculation sample.basic.1abc;
    spool off;
    logout;
    ×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
I write a bat file below:
    ×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
    D:\Hyperion\AnalyticServices\bin\essmsh C:\abc.mxl
    ×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
I can run the scripts if I change the name "1abc" to "abc1"or "a1bc".
Of course I can run this calc in EAS, no matter the name is "1abc" or "abc1".
Anybody find the same problem with me?

I agree, if ever there was a "best practice" to developing scripts (especially when using variables) it is to enclose in single quotes. I actually use double quote, single quote.
    execute calculation "'$4'"."'$5'"."'$6'";

  • I typed a text message from my iphone 4 to my wifes iphone 4 but she did not receive it. What to do?

I typed a text message from my iphone 4 to my wife's iphone 4 but she did not receive it. The iphone user guide does not explain text messaging. Help.

Even if he did hear the sound, there is no guarantee that the other end will receive it.  There have been times in the past when my wife has sent me text messages that I never received.  Heck,  before we were married, I sent her a letter via US Snail that she never received.  There is no guarantee of delivery for text messages or email, although email does tend to be more consistent that text messages (and cheaper too).
