First ever smartphone.  Dropped calls, bad internet connection is this a bad phone or?

This is my first smartphone ever.  It is an Apple iPhone 4.  I bought it with the understanding that I have 90 days to return it.  I have had it about a week now and am barely able to talk to anyone due to failed calls.  One of the reasons I bought it was to upload receipts and receive reimbursement for couponing and such.  I am unable to receive any rebates from Shopmium because my internet connection is so poor.  I am completely smartphone illiterate.  I'm sorry, but I just am.  I need help to get this to work or I'm returning it by Monday.  I have had enough.  Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is going on with this phone?  I do live in a rural country setting, but my old Samsung flip phone worked just fine and it was through Verizon (prepaid).  So I don't understand.  Do different phones ping off of different towers?  Thanks!!

First off the return policy is a 14 day worry free guarantee where you can return it and just pay a restocking fee of $35
Don't believe the store sales people. If you don't return it within 14 days inclusive of the day of purchase you will owe an early termination fee of $350
Return it now.
Additionally an iPhone 4 is a 3G device and not the faster 4G so that may slow you down.
And yes depending on where you are the speeds and call quality can be worse or better. There are dead spots so you must research where the best reception is located.
Good Luck

  • IPhone 4: Blank text messages, dropped calls, slow Internet connection

I thought I was going to be so happy with the iPhone 4 but I am very dissatisfied... Every time I am on the phone the call drops, called AT&T and they can't help and transfer me to apple, still no answer from both parties. I could not believe that they said to use DUCKTAPE.... Are they being serious??????
Also, when I send a text message, most of the time the person receiving the text says it is blank. Has anyone else experiencing this problem?

I just bought a couple of iphone 4's last week (one for my wife and one for me). After two days of using it, my wife commented that her sister (who lives in Los Angeles, we live in Seattle) was receiving "some" messages blank. Originally I thought it was related to my sister in law being on a T-mobile network or just because she was using a different phone.
However, last night, a friend mentioned exactly the same thing. Out of three text messages I've sent, two came in blank, no text.
My theory: We both text in English and Spanish, therefore we have two keyboards loaded on the iphone, so we can switch easily. I have a feeling the special characters in the spanish language is what deters people with other phones/different network to receive them properly. I will switch my keyboard back to English only and post my results.

  • Your call cannot be connected. Please check your phone settings.

Though my load balance is still sufficient enough to make outgoing phone calls, a recording which says "Your call cannot be connected. Please check your phone settings." keeps on playing.
Any idea on how to resolve this?

Did you verify with T-Mobile before you left that you had international dialing enabled?

  • New FIOS customer with dropped VOIP calls and Internet connection

I am a new FIOS customer. Got my 50/25 connection a week ago, switching from a TWC 6/1 connection. Ever since the new connection, I've had numerous issues.
My VOIP (Ooma) connection constantly drops and re-connects during conversations
I've had random Internet connection losses, which picks up again after a few minutes
My home alarm starts chirping every once in a while
I've contacted Verizon several times due to these problems and have received varying answers with no resolution of the problem.
The first time I spoke with support, the tech logged into my router and changed the WiFi channel saying that would fix the problem. It didn’t.
The second time I contacted them, the tech ran a bunch of diagnostics and said everything looked fine so it must be an IP address conflict with my devices, because I had a couple devices using static IP addresses. He said everythinf should be DHCP and the last two digits could not be higher than 99 (192.168.1.99). He said FIOS does not support 3-digit numbers at the end.
So I changed all my devices to DHCP and ran some online VOIP tests. It showed a packet loss of 2-5% and MOS score of 1 (which is bad). I was still getting dropped connections, so I disconnected all devices and connected just one computer to the router and tested again. I was still getting packet loss.
Then I called support a third time, this time the tech said there were no 2-digit IP restrictions and that he was detecting there was no UPS baterry backup for the ONT which was probably causing the problem, so he dispatched a field tech to my house.
Today the field tech came (same guy as before), he took one look at the box and said it was too close to my Electric meter and the RF from the meter was causing interference to the FIOS connection and resulting in dropped connection.
He moved the ONT to another location and said that should fix it.
Well, I'm still seeing packet loss and low MOS score when I run the VOIP test.
I don't know how much of what the techs are saying is true and how much is made up stuff.
Has anyone had similar issues and have thoughts on solutions or likely causes for dropped VOIP calls and connections? Could RF be causing this?
I thought going from a 6/1 Cable connection to a 50/25 FIOS connection would be awesome, but this has turned out to be a nightmare, and I may have to switch back to cable if the problem is not resolved.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

Don't know where the packet loss is happening. I ran the VOIP test on myspeed.visualware.com and it shows a packet loss of 2-5% at different times and a MOS score of 1.
The report says MOS should be around 4 for good VOIP calls.
The Verizon tech who came to the house just blamed the electric meter box for RF interference and move the ONT farther away.
My concern is that I'm getting different answers from different techs at Verizon.
Regarding IP addresses. The Router shows a DHCP range from 192.162.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 as available for devices on the network. So, if I need to assign a static IP to a device should I use a number below 99 or above 151?
    Thanks!

  • Firefox has been causing drops in my internet connection lately. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!

OK, I recently wrote to the author of Session Manager about this problem, since I thought I'd narrowed it down to that, but, well, maybe not. I'll copy & paste that conversation here, rather than waste a lot of time writing up something from scratch, especially since I've already wasted an INCREDIBLE amount of time on this problem, and I'm about ready to go berserk...
Hello. I've been using Session Manager for a long time, but lately, it's been causing a problem that's been driving me out of my skull, and I think I've finally pinned it down to SM. lately, when I've tried to load sessions, even with a small number of tabs, it's caused my internet connection to drop, or, at least, to slow down to the point where pages try to load, but finally come back with a message that the connection timed out, or the page had took too long to respond. I have my Windows Vista Home Premium computer running Firefox 11 connected via Ethernet to a wifi router that is connected to a cable modem. I tried disabling pre-fetching, resetting my router to factory settings, I tried a different router, I tried removing the router and connecting directly to the cable modem, i tried a different modem, I tried disabling the Symantec extension, I tried clearing windows' DNS cache, I tried disabling Firefox's DNS cache, I tried disabling Symantec's Firefox extension (I have Norton anti-virus), and I tried disabling my anti-virus & firewall programs (hmmm, did I leave anything out?), but none of that solved the problem. I haven't noticed this behavior with any other program, and Firefox goes along swimmingly otherwise. The reason why I think I've finally pinpointed it as SM is that trying to load a certain 9-tab session caused this problem multiple times, but I eventually got it all loaded correctly, and then I tried restarting it, and Firefox's own built-in feature of loading the tabs and windows if it closed properly the last time worked just fine, and it loaded quite quickly.
So, why might this be happening, and what can I do about it? Do you think it might be a matter of the SM data being corrupted/ If so, how do I get rid of it? I found the Session Manager Export Tool extension and exported my sessions and then tried uninstalling and re-installing SM, but it hadn't gotten rid of the old SM data. Please help, as I consider SM to be a vital part of my Firefox and have come to rely on it, plus I'd like to be able to use my old saved sessions again. Please help ASAP, too, as I've already wasted an unbelievable amount of time on this and I am extremely frustrated and aggravated. Thank you.
    The response I received:
"Session Managwr cannot cause your Internet connection to drop, it simply doesn't have the ability to do that. All it can do is cause Firefox to restore tabs that have been saved. It can cause lots of web pages to load, which could slow down Firefox or possibly your Internet connection (if you have a really slow connection), but it can't drop your Internet connection. The only exception to that that I can think of is if your modem has a web page with a reboot button and you press that, then save the session such that restoring the session causes the reboot button to press, but that is extremely unlikely.
By default Firefox loads tabs one at a time anyway so it's unlikely to slow things down when loading sessions. If Firefox can restore sessions properly, the Session Manager should be able to do so as well, since Session Manager uses Firefox's restore capabilities.
I'd recommend disabling plugins in Firefox and/or other addons and see if that helps. If you can figure out what changed recently that would help narrow things down.
As for Session Manager data. It doesn't store anything other than the sessions. You can delete those if you wish."
    My reply:
Well, I have a cable internet connection, so I don't think speed is the problem there.
Are you sure about Firefox loading only one tab at a time? I know when I load a session, it seems to show several tabs loading at the same time, and I can't remember it ever not being that way.
Frankly, though, I need more specific, targeted help than being told to just start randomly disabling extensions. I've ALREADY wasted an INCREDIBLE amount of time on this and am ALREADY EXTREMELY frustrated and aggravated, and to just go blindly shooting around in the dark at random is only going to throw craploads more wasted time and aggravation onto the already huge pile. I'm at my wit's end here. I can't take much more of this. I need REAL help. I need more specific, targeted advice about what sorts of things I should be looking for, what sorts of things I should be trying, etc. I don't have any patience left to just start flailing around randomly and likely getting nowhere fast.

    Hi,
You can try to verify that '''Don't load tabs until selected''' is enabled in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''General'''. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20General%20panel?as=u Options > General]
    [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window Options]
If the problem persists please also check in a [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles new profile]. If the new profile is okay, you can later [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile?s=profile&r=1&e=sph&as=s copy the needed personal data] from the old profile and start using the new profile. You can then delete or troubleshoot the old profile. Firefox stores your personal data and settings in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder another location (profile folder)] separate from its [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory folders/files]. A new profile would have the default Firefox settings in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window Options] and [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config], and usually would also be empty of '''Extensions''' and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' > '''Add-ons''', and their settings. • FileSharing Transfer Speed Drops after sharing internet connection

    Hi Folks
Sometimes, when I copy files via FileSharing,
the speed drops exactly to the max. upload speed my internet connection has.
    = instead of 12 MB/s I got 600 ~700 KB/s.
I needed a bit of work to see this connection.
But after a while, it changes back to normal.
However, I did share the ethernet-internet-connection from one machine via WiFi (to surf with an iPod Touch).
Could that initiate this problem? I believe so.
    Internet-Provider is cablecom, switzerland, zurich.
I use a Zyxel Ethernet Switch to connect  two macs with the cablecom-modem (and together).
So Idetached the cablecom-modem from the ZyXel Switch and restarted both machines.
Now, the copy-action via filesharing has the expected full speed. (Just no internet, of course).
After that I connected the Cablecom-Modem again,
    restarted (PowerOff/On) the ZyXel Switch,
    and tried the same again:
    Now the speed is slow.
It seems that I really should NOT share the Ethernet Internet Connection with WiFi
Won't do that anymore because I often copy files from one machine to the other and this slow transfer speed kills me.
Why is that affecting the connection between two local machines?
How can I reset this to "normal".
I hope there is a way to do it in OS X instead of waiting until it sets itself  to "normal" from cablecom's side.
[ -Despite the fact that I should use a wireless router- ]
Is there any chance that this is an issue that OS X could resolve?
Best would probably be: the local connection between two machines should not be affected by the provider in any circumstances.
BTW: The cablecom-modem gives - via a ZyXel Switch - both computers unique IP's and they are reachable/visible from the internet.
    Greetings from Zurich

    If my English is bad
    please forgive me

I am doing the same thing (have tried it occasionally over the past 6 months or so and cannot install Arch because of it)...sad panda.  The downloads start fast (up to 5MB/s), then when it gets to 49% it slows all the way down until it gives up and moves to the next mirror, repeating and repeating and repeating until finally it shows:
        core is up to date
error: failed to update extra (download library error)
error: failed to update community (download library error)
:: There are 51 members in group base
        :: Repository core
Enter a selection (default=all): error: failed to prepare transaction (could not find database)
I've tried commenting out the XferCommand and using wget but that fails even worse.
Thank you for posting this, I am glad I am not the only one experienceing this.  I was about to give up searching and post too.

  • I'm setting up my Time Capsule for the first time and cannot get an internet connection throughWAN connection

I'm setting up my Time Capsule for the first time and can't get an internet connection via ethernet cord

    So new AC model TC??
What modem is it? Pure cable modem .. did you power cycle the modem ( OFF for at least 30min..)??
This is essential to lose the old setup and start afresh.
How have you setup the TC?
Did you try just bridge to existing router? If it doesn't get an IP and you just bought it, possible it is faulty.
Lots more details.. really important things like did the ethernet connectivity leds go on.. both the TC port and the modem port - front ethernet indicator should light up..

  • Internet connection only when making a phone call

I own a Powerbook G4, I connect to the internet wireless via aiport. I can connect only when making a phone call, my ISP is virgin.net. I've changed the micro-filter. Can any one help me on this problem.
    Thanks

Thanks for the usefull information, I've contacted BT they are my telephone provider here in the UK, and they did a line test, not a mechanical test as by an engineer, and said the line is OK. My in-comming & out-going calls are fine, but with interference on the line. How did you get past this problem?

  • Worse Phone I ever had, drops calls on average 20 time a day

I have never experienced a phone that drops calls so many times, 9 times on the last call alone.  VERY FRUSTRATING. Does anyone else have the same experience, and can anyone offer suggestions?

What network are you on? Have you contacted them? Have you had your phone checked for a hardware fault?
For what its worth, my iPhone 3GS has never dropped a call on O2 in the two years since I've had it, so maybe yours has a fault.

  • How to share internet connection from notebook to mobile phone with micro usb cord in Debian based OS? (reverse tethering)

I want to share internet connection from notebook to my mobile phone (Keon) with micro usb cord (because I don't have wifi). I found in Firefox OS (version: Boot2Gecko 1.1.1.0-prerelease) Settings only the possibility to share internet from mobile phone to PC. I use a Debian based OS: Knoppix. I tried to accomplish this with Networking Manager and I did a new wired connection via my phone with "Shared to other computers" IPv4 Settings and with FE:...:02 (usb0) MAC address. But on my phone there is not internet although the connecton between my notebook and phone is estableshed.

    Hi Pimpo,
Thank you for posting your question. I was trying to reproduce your the Shared network, and I would love to know what kind of network you used to connect. This is not possible as of yet and I will file a bug being able to do this, but to make sure I have the right steps on the bug can you confirm the set up of the shared network please?
Also this is currently not possible because the software does not know how to send network traffic over usb, assuming you do not have the ability to turn the computer into a wifi hot spot, which I would recommend instead...

  • "Isync cannot connect to this device" Yet phone has connected to other Imac

I have a Nokia 6230i and for ages I have been trying to get my Macbook to connect via iSync, I thought the phone was at fault, I had taken them both to a genius bar and was told the phone was at fault but last week I connected the phone to an iMac via iSync and it worked a treat. Unfortunately the imac is not my workhorse and the contacts I need to use are on the macbook.
I have reinstalled iSync by extracting it from the dvd but this also did not work. I keep getting "isync cannot connect to this device" every time
Why cant it be a bit more specific? Why not an error code or something that will let you track down the problem
Has anyone else had the same problem with iSync?

    Hi,
I had the same problem with a 6230i from a friend. After setting date and time on the mobile iSync had no problems anymore.

  • E4200 dropping wired/wireless internet connections

I bought it a few years ago and it's ran fine since. I have been pretty impressed with it up until a few months ago when it started misbehaving (dropping connections every 10 minutes or so). I do have the Cisco Connect software installed and have also been using it.
I thought maybe it's the firmware so I updated after the problems began.
-checked my modem which is fine and is working well within the spec range.
    I have done the following:
-I have upgraded to the latest firmware, refreshed it multiple times using different browsers (IE, Chrome)
-changed my settings more than a dozen times (channels and 20 vs 40 mhz)
-removed wifi-protect, put it back a dozen times or so
    -did a full reset
-turned it over, on it's side, on it's back
-Did a rain dance but all that did was make it rain
    -changed cables three times
It has been in the exact same location near the exact same modem and Ooma box forever. Even my hard wired connection drops every ten minutes or so.
I am desperately looking for some kind of solution to this thing as we have weened ourselves (a family of four) of of cable and rely on it.
I would call customer support but after waiting long enough, I know I'd lose connection again.
Would anyone be willing to offer me some advice or potential ixes that I may have skipped? I really appreciate the effort and hope it can be fixed instead of buying another.
    Thank you in advance.

To safely update FW, I recommend doing the following: Download the FW file from the support site first.
    1. Save router config to file first using IE or FF with all security add-ons disabled.
    2. Factory reset the router with all other devices disconnected or turned OFF accept for 1 wired PC.
    3. Reload or Update the FW using IE or FF. Just download the FW file to your local wired LAN PC.
    4. Factory reset the router and then set up from scratch first and test with out loading the saved config from file. Check to see if any problems are fixed before loading the saved config from file. Sometimes you need to set up from scratch with out loading the saved config file. Just safer that way.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. Ensure modem is working well too. Bad modems are out there as well. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

    Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
