First FCEHD Project question

Hello
I am just finishing all of the tuturials from Tom Wolsky's book on FCE. I am getting ready to begin my first project. I am creating a sports highlight video. My question to you experienced users is what would be your recomendations for working in the timeline with music. Should I get all of my video in the timeline and then ad music tracks, or would it work better to insert my music tracks and then add the video? I am going to have 1 music track per game of highlights. I need to have the music match the portions of video.
I hope I have provvided enough information to allow for recomendations from you guys.
Thanks in advance.
power mac G5 Dual 2   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2.5 gigs Ram

My way is cumbersome but it works for me. I create a folder for each game. I capture separate clips for each play that I feel are highlight worthy into the appropriate folder. I include a number in each clips title so I know the order they occurred in the game. Once everything is captured I review each clip and set the in/out points and drag them to the timeline, usually in their numerical order. I may change them around a little if it fits better with music.
It is a time consuming workflow. A 2-hour game tape usually yields about 25-20 minutes of tape and from that tape I generally average about 3 minutes of highlights. My capture process generally takes about an hour to 1 1/2 hours. And then about 2-3 hours of editing (includes editing music) per game.
But I enjoy it.
Good luck.

  • First Motion Project

    I'm about to start on my first motion project, which is going to be a three minute segment set to music with some video and images, which I'm going to add as a chapter to a DVD.
    My question is, can I create the whole three minute as one motion project or will the file size me huge?
    Apologies for what must seem like a really dumb question!
    Peter

    hi,
    Peter is right, 3 mins is a very long time for a motion project. depending on the complexity of the project i doubt whether you would be able to view the whole project back in real time. I even have trouble sometimes on much shorter projects to playback in real time even when it is rendered. In this case you have to export as a movie and watch it. very tedious.
    It would be better to plan out what you want to achive and to break it into segments. Cut the video and images to the track in FCP. If you need to treat specific shots you could export them to motion, play around and then bring it back in to FCP. or if you need generalised imagery to be created in motion, try to create shorter bits and comp then in fcp.
    Every job can have a different workflow, so try it first and see what happens.
    good luck

  • First Flex Project - Skinning Component?

    I am working on my first flex project for the college that I work for.  We are making a large touch screen into a display for all of the awards that we have given out over the years and taking the old plaques off the walls.
    I want to iterate over a list of names and years that the awards were given so that each instance of the award looks like it is on it's own little plate.  I'm just imitating the plaques that were on the wall that had a big discription and name of the plaque on one plate and all the winners of the award on their own little plates beneath it.
    Is this what I would a component skin for?  I'm sorry if this is to much of a newbie question.

    Very cool indeed.
    I added it to my ChikaraDev directory of rich internet
    applications:
    ChikaraDev
    Directory of Rich Internet Applications
    It could use a progress bar though. The screen where it will
    appear is blank till it loads. But very nice use of Flex!

  • First Java Project - Document Management and Workflow

    We are about to embark on our first java project around document management and workflow.
    I would be interested to know how others have approached similar projects – Open Source applications or other tools/APIs.
    It would also be good to know of any issues encountered along the way.
    Thanks,

  • First J2ME Project

    Hi,
    I am quite new to J2ME.
    I am about to do my first J2ME project and need all possible help from you'll.
    The project is about Property Management - Conditional Survey.
    The Managing Agent would visit the property site and do a survey of the property.
    The Agent would be having a mobile device using which he should be able to connect to the database located at his Head Office(HO).
    Using the User Interface displayed on his/her mobile device he should be able to retrieve information, Add/Update/Delete information about his property survey which would update the database located at the HO.
    This is all the information that I have regarding the functional requirements.
    Regarding the tools as off now this is the info I have :
    1) The database would be Oracle
    2) Eclipse IDE.
    3) What is a suitable Mobile Device / Emulator for such a project ?
    4) What other tools would I need ?
    If anyone has worked on a similar requirement before please point me to suitable links for more information and similar sample projects.
    Please share your experience and difficulties that you might have faced while doing the project.
    Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Do you have a background of core java / j2se / j2ee?
    If not, start with something much simpler and work up.

  • First imovie project suddenly erased. How do i get it back??

    I just made my first imovie project and when I was done I made sure to finalize it. A day later, I tried to reopen it through Finder-->Movies-->iMovie Projects-->My First Project. I dragged the "my first project" onto my desktop so itd be easier to get to and then i opened it with iMovie. I double clicked the project and all of a sudden it wasn't there. It was erased. How do i get it back?? I literally pressed nothing else and now cannot find it anywhere on my computer. Help please!!

    That's not optional.
    Projects can only be handled INSIDE the app.
    You should find your Project listed in your iMovies Project Library…

  • Why do the photos in my first InDesign project  look really bad?

    Why do the photos in my first InDesign project look really bad? Noticed as I "placed" them, some PDFs or JPEGs (not photos, but PDFs converted to JPEG) looked pretty distorted. Went ahead with the 60+ page project, converted to PDF, sent to client. He converted to a flipbook to proof and really didn't like the photos. Here's the irony. Upgraded to InDesign for this client. Was using Publisher as a standby until I could afford InDesign. Signed up with the Creative Cloud because job was overwhelming Publisher.
    I started the job without a whole lot of knowledge (or patience for the tutorials) and figured I just wing it (and get InDesign for Dummies). Am thinking somethingw as screwed up in the initial setting up of the job. So how do I figure out if this is the issue and can I fix it without redoing all 60+ pages. If anybody has an answer, please let me know.

    Ok, first image on your indesign page or any other program for that matter are still images, they are no longer pdf's, jpg's, psd's, etc. Once they load into a program, the file format is no longer relevant until you save again. Onl;y on your drive is the format relavent.
    Second, if you can help it, never use jpg's until you are completely done and will be sharing a jpg. Jpg's are a lossy format are are not the best for preserving quality on your drive. Each time you open a jpg, and save a jpg more data is lost, as that is how that format compresses the data, by throwing it way for ever.
    Third, the problem may not even be with you, it could happen when that person created a flipbook. That is an unknown varible, one which could make you look bad when it had nothing to do with you.
    Fourth, Pay attention to the pixel dimentions of your images, the higher those values are the better the quality. Scaling can and probably will reduce that quality. If you can, it is better to hide parts of the image by cropping with a frame than it is to scale the image. you can scale, but pay attention to it.
    I will stop there for now, as some of what I wrote is based on assumtions. That normally does not work out too well.

  • My first flash project

    Hello, a few weeks ago I have launched my first flash project: logotypemaker.com
    Please let me know what I need to improve in second version.
    Thanks.

    Rob, thanks for your input.
    You're right, I hadn't checked it in various browsers, and that seems to reveal some issues...
    After checking the file in different browsers, just as you say, it works just fine for me in Chrome, but in Safari, (my default browser), that's where I see the heart patient inconsistency, and in Firefox, the flashes seem stable, but I hear no audio.
    Sigh.  This confirms what I suspected when it comes to entering the world of HTML5 development...  it looks like we're all facing a new gigantic set of headaches in trying to get our work to perform as expected across the myriad browsers.
    I guess we've been pretty spoiled with Flash up to now, exporting once and feeling confident that it will work consistently in most browsers.  I would have thought HTML5 would be a little further down the road by now to being more consistent from browser to browser, but it looks like it's got a long way to go if an animation this simple has this much trouble performing.  : /
    Is there an approach to this I may be overlooking?  If anyone has more experience in this Flash to HTML5 conversion, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

  • My first LVOOP project: advice appreciated

    Hi all,
    I just
    started using LVOOP and I would like somebody to check my first achievement and
    give me some advice what I should improve regarding:
    Project organization
    – Auto populating vs virtual folder. I prefer the auto populating folders but
    with classes it seems to be better to use the virtual folders
    Disk organization
    – Do you use plain structure of the classes or nested (children folders).
    Special folders for private/public methods?
    PrivatexPublic… –
    Are there some methods that I use and should make them private? I left
    everything public for now.
    But mainly
    if the design, the methods and the way I handle the problem is “as it should be”,
    or if there is space for some significant improvement.
    The program
    should list all in system connected and supported Daqmx devices and then select
    only those for DAQ and those for Output. The class hierarchy is attached.

    Hi Ceties,
    it's difficult to answer general questions about architecture because every person can do it differently, and still all of those ways can be right.
    Your device class hierarchy seems well designed and I wouldn't change anything there.
    The most comfortable way for me to organize my project is to use auto-populating folders.
    I also wouldn't use nested file organization, rather separate folder for every class. This way you don't need to remember the inheritance pattern while going through the files outside of the project.

  • Setting up a cluster for the first time: newbie questions

    Any help appreciated with this situation:
              I'm trying to set up a cluster for the first time and running into
              issues (no big surprise). I'll outline my situation and pose questions
              as they arise. If/when I get things to work I'll post a step-by-step
              summary of what it took to get a simple cluster going.
              Here's what I have:
              machines:
              1 Windows 2000 machines with WL 6.1
              2 RedHat Linux machines with WL 6.1
              All machines are on the same Home LAN, can see each other, etc.
              IP addresses are:
              Windows box: 192.168.1.100
              Linux box 1: 192.168.1.102
              Linux box 2: 192.168.1.103
              servers:
              I've set up the Windows machine as my admin server, and set up
              a managed server on each Linux machine. I created a cluster that consists
              of the 2 Linux machines and deployed the web app and EJB to the cluster.
              The Windows machine is acting as a Proxy using ClusterServlet.
              The web application has been set as the Default Web Application on the
              two Linux machines. All 3 machines are listening on ports 80/443. I also
              set up session memory replication through the console.
              Application:
              I have an application that I package as an EAR file. I'm using it as a
              "reference" application designed to mimic a real world app as much as possible.
              The EAR file contains a web application that uses Struts. It also consists
              of a single Stateless Session Bean. The WAR file and EJB Jar are all
              packaged up into the EAR file. I've been able to run this application just
              fine on a single managed server on all 3 machines.
              The web application works fine, and it can invoke the EJB. I can also
              invoke the EJB from Java stand-alone clients. Struts works great. All is
              well with the world. Now I'm trying to "cluster-ize" this app using
              the environment described above and encountering issues.
              I've read the docs and followed the instructions according to the
              "Weblogic Bible" book. I can bring up all 3 servers and the Linux
              managed servers connect to the cluster just fine. I can also
              see the Struts messages in their logs which normally happens and tells me
              the webapp is initialized properly. The console tells me that the managed
              servers are running. I get no error messages starting up any of the serves.
              Here are the problems I am encountering.
              When I try to access the Web Application (through a browser on the
              Windows machine using http://localhost) I get the following error message:
              <Nov 19, 2002 6:44:33 AM EST> <Error> <HTTP> <HttpServer(1754841,null default ct
              x,admin) found no context for "/". This request does not match the context path
              for any installed web applications and there is no default web application confi
              gured.>
              Also, when I try to invoke the EJB through a stand-alone Java client,
              I get a JNDI lookup error on the EJB's home interface.
              Questions:
              Question1: I noticed when setting up the machines that console lets you
              define a "Machine" or a "Unix Machine". What's the difference? Should I
              define the Linux machines as Unix machines or machines, and what are the
              consequences of either choice?
              Question2:
              I'm not totally clear on how my web.xml should look to set up Struts,
              the ClusterServlet, and a servlet filter I'm using to test Servlet filters.
              Here is what I had before I tried to cluster and which works fine:
              <filter>
              <filter-name>MainFilter</filter-name>
              <filter-class>com.refapp.servlets.MainFilter</filter-class>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>myAttribute</param-name>
              <param-value>Foo</param-value>
              </init-param>
              </filter>
              <filter-mapping>
              <filter-name>MainFilter</filter-name>
              <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
              </filter-mapping
              <!-- Struts ActionServlet Configuration -->
              <servlet>
              <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet</servlet-class>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>application</param-name>
              <param-value>refappstruts</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>config</param-name>
              <param-value>/WEB-INF/struts-config.xml</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>

              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>mapping</param-name>
              <param-value>org.apache.struts.action.RequestActionMapping</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <load-on-startup>2</load-on-startup>
              </servlet>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <welcome-file-list>
              <welcome-file>index.do</welcome-file>
              <welcome-file>index.jsp</welcome-file>
              <welcome-file>index.html</welcome-file>
              </welcome-file-list>
              (I have set up a "dummy" 0-length file called index.do that triggers
              Struts to go into its ActionServlet when first accessing the web site).
              Here is how I added ClusterServlet to web.xml:
              servlet>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>weblogic.servlet.internal.HttpClusterServlet</servlet-class>
              <load-on-startup>0</load-on-startup>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>defaultServers</param-name>
              <param-value>192.168.1.102:80:443|192.168.1.103:80:443</param-value>
              </init-param>
              <init-param>
              <param-name>DebugConfigInfo</param-name>
              <param-value>ON</param-value>
              </init-param>
              </servlet>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>InitServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/servlet/InitServlet</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.html</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>ClusterServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              Clearly there is a problem with the Default Web application not being
              seen/mapped properly. Any chances my URL mappings for the filter servlet,
              Struts, and ClusterServlet are stepping on each other?
              With respect to the EJB, here is what my weblogic-ejb-jar looks like:
              <weblogic-ejb-jar>
              <weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              <ejb-name>Hello</ejb-name>
              <stateless-session-descriptor>
              <pool>
                   <max-beans-in-free-pool>100</max-beans-in-free-pool>
              </pool>
              <stateless-clustering>
              <stateless-bean-is-clusterable>true</stateless-bean-is-clusterable>
              <stateless-bean-load-algorithm>
              round-robin
              </stateless-bean-load-algorithm>
              <stateless-bean-methods-are-idempotent>
              true
              </stateless-bean-methods-are-idempotent>
              </stateless-clustering>
              </stateless-session-descriptor>
              <jndi-name>Hello.Home</jndi-name>
              </weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              I run this through ejbc and package everything up into the EAR file.
              However, I get a JNDI lookup failure when I try to access the Bean from
              a standalone Java client running on the Windows machine.
              Here is the jndi.properties file that I am using:
              java.naming.factory.initial=weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory
              java.naming.provider.url=t3://localhost:80
              Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? I can post config.xml also if needed.
              Thanks in advance!

  • 16:9 letterboxed project questions

    This is my first 16:9 project and it's a little confusing...
    My source footage is cropped to 16:9 aspect ratio from 4:3 but it's not anamorphic, it's only letterboxed. The frame size came out to be 720X404 when cropped and compressed with Compressor. Is that right? can I use this .m2v file in DSP or I HAVE to use anamorphic for widescreen SD DVD. My source footage is in a single field MJPEG A format rendered out from Final Fut Pro with a 4:3 aspect ratio letterboxed to 16:9.
    I made a test burn, just dropping it on the first play and setting the track to 16:9 letterbox, I set everything to 16:9. It played the right way on 2 different computers, letterboxing it on 4:3 monitors and playing full screen on the 16:9 monitor, but it didn't play back the right way on a portable Panasonic player with a 16:9 screen. It letterboxed it and even with the wide screen setting on the machine kept the letterbox, so it got squeezed.
    What I would like is to play back letterboxed on 4:3 systems including the menu, and to play full screen on 16:9 systems automatically. I don't want to make different versions of the menu for the different aspect ratios.
    How would I do this? Do I make my menus in 853X480 and import it to DSP. I'm making the menus in After Effects and Photoshop.
    please help.
    David

    Yes it is the continuation of the same project, but that post was already check as resolved, so I opened a new post.
    Yes there is a reason with working Motion JPEG, the film was deinterlaced with a special plugin and processed with other effects also, as a matter of fact the whole timeline is for some reason in Motion JPEG.
    What they are giving me is a 720X480 4:3 aspect ratio master in Motion JPEG A format, single field and letterboxed. They had to letterbox it to adjust the different shots to it. The source material for this project was a mess, all different cameras, some letterboxed, some not, some progressive some not... It's a real challenge to make them look somewhat similar. That is why was processed with many plugins. The whole thing is rendered out to one big file.
    I took this material to Compressor and tried to make a .m2v file, cropped out the letterbox, set the size to 720X480 anamorphic but for some reason it didn't stretch it for me but made a file with a 720X404 size.
    I'm using FCS 2, DVDSP 4.2.0, Compressor 3.0
    I really appreciate your help

  • Making a purchase for the first time, security questions are different to what I've set up?

    Hello,
    My friend has recently gifted me a $10 for my app store. After redeeming it, it says I have $10.00 Credit, which I assume is a good thing. Now, with this money he has sent me, I am trying to buy a Gem Pack in the game 'Clash Of Clans', this costs $9.99.
    I click purchase and it tells me "Insufficient Remaining Store Credit" where it also says "Tap Continue to Sign In". After typing my password in, I am led to the account billing settings where I've got the 'none' option selected as I have not put any credit card details which shouldn't be a problem as I'm trying to buy with the money my friend has given me.
    I click the 'done' button where it then tells me "confirmation required" where I then click 'buy', but then it comes up with "Verification Required".
    Putting in my password once again, it asks me for security questions. Here lies the problem. It usually asks me one question I know, and another that I haven't put in before. Usually "What's your dream job?" comes which I've put the answer to as this is a question I know. But, after it usually asks me either "What was your first pet's name?" which is a question I haven't put before.
    I've tried going to appleid.apple.com and changing and resetting my security questions multiple times, even to match the questions that are asked and it gives me the same result.
    "You've typed one or more security questions answers wrong".
    Please help, this is getting on my nerves. If this persists, I'm afraid I won't be buying from iTunes much.
    Cheers,
    Jack.

    After resetting your questions you've tried logging out (tap on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store) and back into your account on your iPad to see if they then tie up ?
    If they don't, and resetting them yourself doesn't make any difference, then you could try contacting Support and see if they can help with what's going on.
    Normally when needing to contact support to get the questions reset you need to contact Support in your country : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
    You could try the same contact method for your problem - or you could try contacting iTunes Support via this page, but as it's related to security questions they might just point you to the above : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ , click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
    For the $9.99 purchase and your $10 credit, if you are in the US then you need to add on your state's sales tax to an item's listed price

  • First time user questions (managing library, file size defaults, cropping,)

    I'm on my first Mac, which I am enjoying and am also using iPhoto '08 for the first time which is a great tool. It has really increased my efficiency in editing a lot of photos at one time. However, the ease of use makes a couple custom things I want to do difficult. I'd appreciate any feedback;
    1) I often want to get at my files for upload or transfer to another machine. When I access Photos with my Finder I can only see "Iphoto Library" (or something like that) which does not show the individual files. Very annoying. I have found that i can browse to one of the menus and select "Open Library" and then I can see all the files.
    How can I make it default to this expanded setting? When I am uploading pictures via a web application, for instance, the file open tool does not usually give me the option to Open the library. By Default, I would like the library to always be expanded so I do not have to run iPhoto or select "open" to view the files.
    Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    2) Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file? My camera will output 10MB files and after a simple straighten or crop, iPhoto will save them to 1MB files.
    Ignoring the debate on file size, is there a way to control the jpg compression so I can stay as close to what came out of the camera as possible?
    3) I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
    While I know this may be useful for some people, it is time consuming when going through hundreds of photos to constantly have to choose "5x7" from the drop down list. Is there a way to make this the default?
    I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but thus far, I've been real happy with iPhoto.
    4) The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it. I'm open to any tips on that one as well....
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    The format of the iPhoto library is this way because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
    Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    What's above is what's on offer. Remember, iPhoto is NOT a file organiser, it's a photo organiser. If you want to organise files, then use a file organiser.
    Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file
    You don't. Though losing 9MB off a 10MB files is excessive. Where are you getting these file sizes.
    I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
    Straightening also involves cropping. Best to straighten first, then crop.
    The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it.
    If you use the hack detailed above be very careful, it's easy to corrupt the iPhoto Library, and making changes to the iPhoto Package File via the Finder or another app is the most popular way to go about it.
    Regards
    TD
