First full backup crashes. Help!

I've only just installed and begun using Photoshop Elements 8. I tried to do a full catalog backup after importing some folders in the catalog, but the program crashes after I hit the 'done' button. I'm trying to backup to a dvd. This seems like a fundamental problem and I don't want to invest time in Elements if I can't reliably manage photos.
I'm running Windows Vista.

Hi Richard,
This could be some intermittent issue. I would recommend you to try this again. I have used this command several times and didn't face any issues.
1) Please try with some other DVD disk. Might be issue with this particular disk.
2) The failure could be due to some of files being corrupted in catalog. To confirm this, please create a new catalog  with very few number of files say 5-10- files and see if Backup works for you.
Please get back with your findings.
Thanks,
Sourabh

  • Will TM keep my first full backup?

    I've just made a backup of my entire MAC OS (about 30GB) and I am wondering if
    I were to exclude some folders from being backed up in the future would this cause
    them to disappear from the first full backup
    Also If I avoided excluding any folder from being backed up would
    the following backups be incremental? (i.e. only storing new data) of would they be huge even when nothing changed?

    no, they won't disappear from the very first backup. however, the very first backup will disappear eventually when TM runs out of space on the backup drive. then it will start deleting oldest backups to make room for new ones. it's supposed to warn you about it if you have that option checked in TM system preferences->options but it's known to sometimes do so without a warning.

    all TM backups except for the very first one are incremental. only new and changed files are backed up from scratched. everything else is hard linked to existing backup copies.

  • Elements 10 full backup crashes computer @ ~70%

    I am running Elements 10 on Windows 7.  I am trying to do a full backup of a catelog and it crashes my computer somewhere between 60 and 80% complete.  I left the computer overnight so it isn't just "taking a long time".
    I have successfully done backups in the past using Elements 10 backup on this computer.
    Tried it to the local drive as well as a USB Drive.  Nothing else running at the time.  Done a catalog repair (no errors found) as well as an optimization.
    Elements 10 was the first version I had so shouldn't be a catalog conversion issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Did you tried on the different locations of the hard drive, sometimes in the specific location there is a limited perssimison issue.
    Also, check if you have any videos on your catalog, if so please try to move them into a different catalog and try only with images.

  • Rman full backup, crash and full restore?

    Hi,
    I try to implement a simple backup and restore process with rman. Ok, with rman it's not simple. ;-)
    My aim is to backup a database with a full backup and restore it from this backup, for example when it crashes.
    Ok, for creating the backup I use this rman script:
    run
    allocate channel t1 type disk;
    backup incremental level 0 format 'PATHTOBAKFILE' database;
    release channel t1;
    The result is a 1GB large backupfile.
    Now I delete the whole database and create a new one to simulate a crash.
    After this is done, I want to restore the state of the database which is frozen in the backupfile.
    Therefor I use the following rman script:
    run
    allocate channel t1 type disk format 'PATHTOBACKUPFILE';
    shutdown immediate;
    startup mount;
    restore database;
    recover database;
    alter database open resetlogs;
    release channel t1;
    Now rman tells me an error:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================

    RMAN-06023: Kein Backup bzw. keine Kopie der Datendatei 1 zum Wiederherstellen gefunden
    In english: No backup or copy of datafile X where found for restore.
    I think the backup/restore possibilities with rman are very complex and I don't exactly understand which is the right backup strategie. I'm not an oracle specialist. Maybe someone can give me a hint.
    My program should backup the database full, differential and incremental and also restore only by using the given backupfiles. So I want somethink like Point-In-Time recovery, but rman should use the time-point of the given backupfile. And this backupfiles are stored outside oracle, e.g. on a server or somethink like this.
    Thanks a lot for help.
    Best regards,
    Ronny

  • Time Machine missing full backups - Need help.

    I was going to restore my Imac from Time Machine, and when I went to restore, its last full backup was from December 25, 2009 and nothing from 2010. I had checked it recently and saw backups images from January. Is there anything i can do? If i restore from the 25th, will my images from January February still be there?

    Are you doing a full system restore, booting from your Leopard Install disc?
    If not, please explain just what you're doing.
    If so, there are two possibilities:
    Did you rename or replace your internal HD after 12/25? If so, those are treated as two separate disks; thus there may be two drives in the "pop-up menu" above the list of dates. See item (f) in question #14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
    Have you excluded any System files from Time Machine backups? If so, you cannot do a full system restore (since you didn't back up the entire system).
    Where are your backups, and why are you restoring? If your Mac is still functional, try looking at your backups with the Browse option, per #17 of the FAQ Tip, to see just what's there.

    Can anyone help??? Obviously, this is reinstalling over the old, so everything is wiped out. The reinstall took 16 hours. I have tried reinstalling several older versions all with the same results. I verified the hard drive and everything is fine. I am at a loss.

    This does not answer the question, and your wording is vague enough that it's hard to be sure exactly what's going on. Did you do exactly what is said here:

  • What happens after TM deletes full backup & only incrementals are left?

    If I understand this correctly, Time Machine does 1 complete backup & then incremental backups after that. If that's correct, what happens when the full backup is about to be erased because the backup drive is full? Does TM alert you to this & ask if you want to create a new full backup instead of another incremental one? Also, is there any way to get TM to create a log so you can see at a glance what's in the incremental backups without having to click through all the folders in each one?
    TIA,
    Elllen

    Answering this dives into how files are represented on a disk. Basically, a disk is a huge expanse of storage space and an index/catalogue/"table of contents". When you copy data to a disk you physically copy the data into the storage space and then make a reference in the index as to where it resides on the disk. The operating system sees the reference, and doesnt go scouring the disk for files whenever you open a folder. This makes finding files and tracking their locations in the directory tree much easier. A single index-link to a storage chunk is called a "hard link". When the operating system "deletes" a file, it doesnt erase it from storage, but instead just removes the "hard link" index entry.
    Since files are referenced through an index instead of reading the actual storage space of the disk itself, you can have multiple references in the index to the same chunk of storage space. Hence, you can have multiple hard links which are essentially the same file.
    Keeping that in mind, read on...
    Every "incremental" backup is a representation of the full backup, including the first "full" backup. Its no different than any other backup (the only difference is that it was the first one so it took longer to copy everything over). Once a file is copied over to the backup disk, it is referred to by a "hard link" in the disk's index. This is essentially how a disk points to a file on any drive. It copies the data over and then creates a hard link to the file's physical location on the disk, which is how the file is accessed by the operating system (or rather, howe the operating system knows the file exists on the disk). You can have multiple hard links to a file, where the same allocation of disk space is pointed to by two different hard links in the index. As such, you can have two representations of the same file (and therefore two links to it) represented on the same disk. If you delete one of the hard links, it will behave as if it's deleted the file, but in fact the file will still remain on disk and will be accessible through the second hard link.
    Note that this is different from an Alias (which is also called a "soft link"), which is a file in itself that points to a single hard link. An alias can be removed without the original file being touched.
    When TM does the initial backup it copies all the contents over to the backup disk, and then creates hard links to those files which it represents in the first backup folder. When the next backup occurs, any changed files are copied over with new hard links created. The unchanged files, however, are not copied again but instead are just referred to again with new hard links in the new backup folder. As such, new files have one hard link to them (until the next backup), and the old files have two (one in the current backup folder and one in the previous folder). This creates a situation where if the first backup folder is deleted, the original files that were copied are not lost, as they are still represented by hard links in the newer backup folder, and can be accessed that way.
    So, why is this different than creating aliases to the original files in the initial backup? Since aliases are just files that point to hard links, if Aliases to the original backups were used instead of hard links, when the original hard links in the initial backup folder are removed the aliases would no longer point to anything anymore and the files would be gone. This defeats the purpose of a backup.
    When a file changes from the initial backup, on the next backup the newer version will be copied over and a new hard link to it will be created. If you delete all hard links to the initial backup (by deleting the initial backup folder) the newer file will still be there in the new folder but all references to the old file will be gone and you'll be left with only the new file (along with everything else that was unchanged).
    Now to answer your question: Basically, when the old backups are deleted by Time Machine, its not the full/initial backup that's deleted, but only the old versions of files that have been changed. All the original files that were not changed are still there, represented in every backup (new and old) by hard links.

  • Full Backups Every Time?

    My time machine setup is doing full backups every hour! I've excluded a ton of folders I don't want, such as Fusion Virtual Machines, but it's still backing my Users folder in full every time. All 20gb...
    Anybody else seen this? I saw some other posts about checking the Console for particular errors during the backup, but I don't get any errors whatsoever.
    thanks in advance!

    Greetings,
    Time Machine will only back up what has changed, each hour, after the completion of the first full backup. If nothing has changed you'll see no change for that hour.
    I use a Firewire 400 drive and my first full backup took 1 hr and 40 minutes, or right at 42 Gig an hour - I don't use USB drives any more than I have to. I always use the GUID partition scheme and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    The subsequent backups take from a second or two to a few minutes, depending on the changes to the drives/partitions that I back up since that initial Time Machine backup.
    Check your consumed space by going to each drive icon on your desktop and do a "Get Info" and note the drive space used and what's left.
    I use TM on four different machines, each with their own Firewire drive and they all work as advertised.
    Good Luck my friend.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • After a complete restore of Mac from a Time Machine volume, I don't want a full backup the next time Time Machine backs up.

    After performing a complete restore of my Mac from a Time Machine volume, Time Machine wants to perform a full backup the next time it backs up.This is normal: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
    But I don't have enough free space on my external hard drive to do this because my external hard drive already contains one complete backup. My hard disc on my MacBook is 320 and my external drive is 500 GB, so it doesn't add up. I don't want to delete the original backup in case something goes wrong during the new full backup. What can I do?

    You don't have too many options.  The best approach would be to buy a larger external drive.  The guideline for Time Machine is that you should have 2-3 times as much capacity on the external drive as data you're backing up.  See item 1 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  In any case, you can't prevent that first full backup unless you're willing to turn off Time Machine permanently.

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    It's usually best to let TM do it's hourly backups. If they're using too much time or disk space, see item #9 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
    If they're slow or hanging, see item #D2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
    You can use the free Time Machine Editor: http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/
    But note if you ever want to resume hourly backups, use TME to set that schedule before deleting the app. Otherwise, Time Machine will keep using the last schedule set by TME.
    Also note that if the TM drive is disconnected when TM wants to do a backup, it will just wait until it's connected again -- no harm, no foul. And it's also ok to cancel a backup (but try to avoid it on the first, full backup); TM will just continue on the next time. But do be sure to eject the disk before disconnecting it.
    and if it is ok to delete previous backups
    Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't have to. Unless the +*Warn when old backups are deleted+* box is checked in TM Preferences > Options, it will automatically delete your oldest backups when it needs room for new ones.
    You can, if you want, delete old backups, or all backups of a selected item, but only via the TM Interface. See item #12 in the FAQ Tip.

    Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
    You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
    Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

    Nothing gets imported.  Simply restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the new/restored computer.
    Download and install iTunes from Apple's website.
    The first time iTunes is launched, assuming the ENTIRE iTunes folder is restored to the correct location, it will launch and be exactly as it was prior to the comptuer issues.  If for some reason this does not work, close iTunes, hold the SHIFT key while launching iTunes and a prompt will appear to choose or create a new iTunes library.  At this point simply point iTunes to the correct location for the existing iTunes library.

  • Attempt at Full Backup keeps crashing

    When I attempt a full backup through PE8, at the window where its "calculating total media size", the program always stops working,crashes and the adobe crash report window pops up. I don't have any hope adobe will read or help, so here I am. I have no missing files to reconnect. The system info shows my catalog is on my 3rd drive which is where I want it. All the actual photos are stored on my 2nd drive if that makes a diff.

    That doesn't make a difference.Please verify that the place where you are taking the backup has enough space.

    What exactly is the problem?
    You are now running Mavericks. What version of iPhoto do you now have installed? If you restored  an iPhoto 9.2.3 version, it will not work with Mavericks, you first need to update iPhoto to the current version 9.5.1.  Check, if you are seeing an update on the "updates" tab of the App Store, when you sign in with your Apple iD, or on the "Purchased" tab in the "Accept" portion of the tab.
    What kind of backup of your iPhoto library do you have?
