First G5 Quad says AppleSMU System Shutdown cause =3, now Mac Pro says -128 as a shutdown cause.

A weird error I can't seem to troubleshoot easily through research has happened to my 2010 Mac Pro. Its called AppleSMU -- Shutdown cause = -128 = Does anyone have an idea what -128 it? I know what -1, -2, -3, -110(Power supply) all mean, but -128?
To further troubleshoot the problem I rebooted in safe mode and everything seems to be working normally. My Mac Pro's temps are within operating range as well as the PSU. Can someone shed some light on what -128 means? Does anyone have a list of Apple shutdown codes with their meanings? I am going to attempt to run ASD and AHT tonight to see what the problem could be though.
Thanks.
Its like my G5 is running without problems, where as my Mac Pro(just by not using it for almost a week) is now giving me a shutdown cause of -128.

Wow...  I found the problem, totally unexpected.
It was a misbehaving UPS unit.  Not anything with the computer at all !!
It had never happened while I was around to see it before.  With the computer plugged directly into the wall, no more recurring rebooting.
I think it's a worn out battery in my UPS.  Now, if I could only get all those computer diognostic hours of my life back.

  • How do I overcome error 150:30 with a replacement system hard drive on a Mac Pro?

I have replaced my system hard disk drive on a Mac Pro and used Mac 'Restore' to restore the complete system from a Time Machine backup. Everything else works correctly, except my current Adobe products (InDesign CS4 and Photoshop CS4) both give a licensing error code 150:30 and each suggest contacting Adobe technical support.
    Can you help?

Thanks for your reply. Is it necessary to uninstal the existing CS4
    products before re-installing?

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • Unable to install 10.9.5, iTunes 11.4, other system updates on my 2013 Mac Pro

Hi everyone - I'm hoping someone can help me out. My 2013 Mac Pro is currently running 10.9.3. For a few weeks now, I've been trying to get 10.9.4 to install but every time I do, the computer reboots but doesn't actually update. The same is true with 10.9.5 and iTunes 11.4. No matter what I do, including manually downloading the installers (10.9.4 Combo, 10.9.5, and iTunes 11.4), they fail. I suspect that it is a really corrupted permissions issue and I've run the Fix Permissions action in Disk Utility several times but it never changes things.
What's even more confusing is the Updates tab of the App Store app. It shows that I have updates ready and they keep repeating as installed.
Any help is greatly appreciated. As it stands, I'm going to do a totally clean install of Mavericks when it ships but right now, I can't even connect my iPhone 6 Plus to iTunes because it isn't 11.4.
    Cheers,
    Brian

    I would suggest:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If this does not work, then try reinstalling OS X instead which will automatically install the current version:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:

OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

  • Mac Pro 5,1 hangs on shutdown

I use a 2012 3.33 GHz 6-core Mac Pro 5,1 in my recording studio, running OS 10.9.2 with 16 GB RAM. I use all of the PCIe slots:  slot #1 is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, #2 is a Universal Audio UAD-2 Quad card for my powered-plugin library, #3 is the Avid Pro Tools HD-Native card and #4 is an OWC Accelsior 120GB 6G SSD which I use as my primary Pro Tools production drive.
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks and added the Accelsior SSD (this January) the computer hangs on shutdown and occasionally on startup. With shutdown it's the same every time - when I shut it down I get a blank gray screen with only the cursor arrow showing, and I can still move the arrow around. After a few minutes I hit the power button to force it to shut off.
The machine also runs very sluggishly and takes forever to boot up.  It almost as if there are a ton of hidden processes bogging it down.
I've checked and re-checked for viruses, I've reset the SMC and PRAM, I use Disk Utility to verify all my drives and repair all the disk permissions about 3 times per week, and I do daily diagnostics with Tech Tool Pro 7.  I'm about to pull all the PCIe cards except the graphics card and disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse and then reconnect everything in steps but before I do all that I was wondering if any forum participants have dealt with a similar problem ?
    - Lang Doogie

You could try a different SSD than the Mercury model from OWC.
Also, any and even the ones from OWC should have TRIM enabled and you do not.
I have a number of Samsung SSD and just noticed one $110 250GB

  • Mac Pro takes few minutes to shutdown

since a long time,my mac pro takes a few minutes to shutdown after using the shutdown-menu.
is there anyone, who has the same problem and knows a solution?
    bst rgds from germany!

Have you run disk repair utilities? especially Disk Warrior 4.1.1 or TechTool Pro 4.6.2?
Cloned your system and tried with that?

  • Mac Pro firmware update (AUG.'07) causes fan spinning@ loud volume-

Just ran the Mac Pro firmware updater from software update and now the fan is on extremeley loudly as soon as I boot-up and *does not quiet down at all* during operation. Also, there is no power light on the front of the Mac Pro tower. I read somewhere that this was supposed to improve fan performance but is has worsened it dramatically.
I read that this firmware update is the first of its kind to not require the removal of RAID disks… but I have a RAID disk so it gets me wondering that maybe it's related…?
    Mac Pro 2 X 3GHz Dual-Core running 10.9.10
Any ideas? I have tried resetting the PRAM, but nothing changed. Also, I cannot shutdown consisstenly, I have to power-down with a hard reset.
    Thanks,
    -Phil

    A. You should apply it from a non-RAID.
    B. You might want to reset the SMC.
*Note: This update requires a Macintosh-formatted disk or*
*partition. If you are starting up using a RAID (Redundant Array of*
*Independent Disks) subsystem, you must connect a Macintosh-formatted*
*storage device to apply this update.*
Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from
installing correctly. If you are having trouble installing an update
try disconnecting non-essential devices and use only an Apple keyboard,
    mouse, and display.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macprosmcfirmwareupdate11.html
... and you read that it doesn't matter if the BOOT volume is a RAID?
There was/are some mis-statements out there. Booting from a RAID is not supported. Removing a RAID array was never an issue (non-boot volumes).
And me, I always avoid installing using Software Update and go to Apple Downloads.

  • OS X tiger unexpected failures causing brand new mac pro to shut down.

I wanted to know what to do about or what is causing the error that i have been randomly getting on my new mac pro, purchased about a week and a half ago. My computer will randomly shut down and when i get it to come back up it says something along the lines that OS tiger shut down uexpectadly. I know it cant be to out of date software beacuse i updated it all.

    This does sound odd.
I've seen bad power supplies and overheating CPU's do this.
I recommend you place a service call as this issue may be hardware related.
If it turns out not to be hardware related, no harm done.

  • Using G5 system disk in an Intel Mac Pro

I have just bought a 2.66 ghz Mac Pro. All my work, applications, plug-ins etc. are currently on a 500GB disk in my G5. Is there any way of actually using the physical disk in the G5 in the Mac Pro or do I have to copy it all over using Migration Assistant (which in the past has not been 100% accurate and will have to run over night).
Can I remove the disk, install it into the Mac Pro and upgrade the OS after starting up with the CD? Or is this wishful thinking?
    Thanks

    Malcolm,
I have to issue a caveat about that. Many have failed to do as you propose. That's why Kappy and I wrote this user tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=10
It is true not all have failed, but when the failure is bad, you can get internet connection settings go bad, kernel panics, and corrupt files causing more frequent unexpected quits. The scenarios where they work and why they work when others do not have not yet been made clear.

  • UPS Causing Disturbance to Mac Pro Power Supply

I have been doing a lot of work on upgrading two Mac Pro's over the last few days. I have one attached to an APC UPS 1300VA 780W rated. Normally this Mac Pro is under my desk, so I do not here it. During the process of one of the upgrades I had the Mac Pro sitting right in front of me on my desk. As soon as I powered it up, I could hear this disturbing "hum" or "buzz" coming from the power supply of the Mac Pro. However the Mac Pro seemed to operate fine.
I decided to unplug the Mac Pro from the APC UPS and into a regular Tripp-Lite wall surege protector with no UPS. The noise was significantly reduced. Therefore my question to you is:
    1. Do you think the fact that the APC is creating the problem or introducing a different signal (maybe not true Sine Wave) than what is required by the Mac Pro?
    2. For those that have a newer Nehalem Mac Pro and they have access to the back, how would you rate the "hum"? Is it what you would expect? Now that I have it off the APC UPS, it seems more normal (it is audible, but only with my ear close to it).
    3. How well are the power supply units in the Mac Pro designed? Enough to handle immediate loss of power? What about cleaning the power coming in? Sometime the voltage drop across my AC outlet is 110V to 120 V.
    Mike

RS? XS? something other than those? The linked discussion OP had an XS and went to SMART unit. Before I bought CyberPower to replace one of my two 1500VAs (one XS and other RS) I decided to ditch APC this go around. And, glad I did. Quiet, green, stand-by mode.
The 2008 had bad inrush current, and ever since the G5 Quad with 1kw PSU people have been looking for the best UPS.
One article talked about PSU efficiency, and apparantly Apple's didn't match the 85+.

  • This operating system had just been installed on my Mac Pro and ever since, it had caused my desktop to take more than 40minutes to start up

The new OS X Yosemite had been causing my desktop problem, it is taking more than 40 minutes to start up the computer and after managing to start it up,it take extra more than that to shut down the computer....why now?.

This is a support forum so you are certain to see people here who have had problems upgrading RAM. However, that shouldn't stop you. You definitely need more RAM. What kind of MacBook do you have? Run Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info. What does it say under Hardware > Model Identifier.
If your machine is MacBook 3,1 or later, you can support 4 GB RAM. If not, you will be limited to 2 GB or 3 GB, depending on the exact model.

  • My mac pro says "It can't be synced because this computer is no longer authorised for purchased items that are on this iPad.

But when I de-authorise and then re-authorise it says it's already authorised and then the same window pops up saying  "It can't be synced because this computer is no longer authorised for purchased items that are on this iPad.
    Battled all day.
    Removed the SC folder,
Checked iTunes log in is correct.
Checked Itunes is the same country.
    Restarted both devices.
    Tried different usb ports
    Any ideas?

I found the solution to this problem
the apple service helped me actually
the best and the esiest way is to solve this problem  :
create a new account (as an administator recomended)
Bonjour servises must be enabled ( go to control panel > administartive tools> sevices> Bounjour services (change the category to large icons if you dont see administartive tools )
    install itunes
    sign in
    authorize
    SYNC
    it must sync normally
but if the meesage pops up that points on a particular items that could not be synced ( to ur itunes because you are not authorized for this items ) REMOVE THEM
creating a new user account shows the items wich dont let you sync your iPhone
after you REMOVE those **** items that were not authorised , you can go to your old user account and SYNC it as old kind time
was having this problem 2 weeks , and nothing helped except this was. not deleting the SC Info folder, now copying apple folder to some other mobile divce folder
REMEMBER  the problem is in your iPhone , it is about the items that are in your iPhone
    Thanks to Apple service
for anyone who needs othe heple you r welcome to ask
will hepl you with a pleassure cause i know how I felt this days:)

  • Help with Logic Pro 8, Apogee Symphony System, and Nehalem 8-core Mac Pro

So here's the problem. I went on a shopping spree recently and purchased an 8-core Nehalem 8-core Mac with 14 GB RAM, Apogee's Symphony system (With Rosetta 800 and AD-16X), and I use this gear with Logic Pro 8.
I still get system overload messages. Sometimes with only 1 virtual instrument and 8 audio tracks!
What gives? I'm running the fastest machine on the fastest system with the fastest/cleanest hardware.
I'm running Logic Pro on all of its highest settings (like it should). Of course I could drop the buffer size and unclick a few things here and there. but why? Is my machine powerful enough to handle it or not?
I've deleted the plist a bunch of times and repaired hardisks and everything. any help from a certified LOGIC pro would be excellent and much appreciated! thanks in advance,
    jayme

    ?It's highest settings?
Do you mean the sample buffer is at 32 or 1024.
Even though you have Apple's flagship system it's still possible for Logic to bring it to it's knees. High sample rates plus a couple of space designer reverbs can send a single core into an overload condition.
    Try these settings under Preferences/Audio.
    I/O Buffer Size - 256
    Process buffer - medium
Do NOT have the I/O Safety Buffer selected.
    More info.
What sample rate and bit depth are you recording at? ie: 48kHz, 24-bit?
When you open Logic's CPU meters are you seeing a single core spiking?
What effects are being used on the audio and single VI track?
