First Gen 5GB: Static during playback

Help! During playback (using original driver) the sound output suddenly became very noisy/fuzzy/staticky. I erased the drive, reset it and loaded updated drivers but no change. Is this now a paperweight?
Thanks!

Hi Clayton,
A couple of ideas: the simplest (but least likely to work) is to look down into the headphone jack to see if you can see the two copper colored contacts. If one appears to be bent in, you could try to very gently ease it out.
The second is to fix the solder on the earphone jack. This is more complicated (but do-able) and seems to be not too uncommon a problem (is yours a second generation iPod, 20Gb?). You can read my other thread about it here;
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68bbf90d
Let me know if either of these things work for you.
Good luck,
Paul

  • Static during playback with soundfonts

I'm trying to bring a MIDI file into GarageBand and play it back using various soundfonts. However, when I choose "DLS Music Device" as my tone generator and assign a soundfont, I hear a loud hissing and crackling sound during playback. I only hear this when I'm using a soundfont, not with any of GarageBand's internal sounds.
I've tried several soundfonts, most of which I've used successfully in other applications, but none of them will play consistently in GarageBand without the hissing.
    Any ideas?

I've tried the same switching the mic for a guitar with no problem. The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.
It might also help if you posted a screen shot of logic's Audio preferences.

  • Static during playback of voice recorded through external mic and mixer

I have an external mixer plugged into my USB and sound quality is great playing through mixer (listening through headphones plugged into the mixer) but when I record and playback of through GarageBand I hear lots of static and clicking sounds. I hear the static whether I play through my external speakers or headphones hooked up to my iMac.
I set up a new Real Instrument > Vocals > No Effects
    Input: Channel 1
    Format: Mono
    Monitor: Off
When I use the Cubase software that shipped with the mixer, to record and playback, the sound quality is fine playing through the computer

    Hi Woody,
i want you to follow few steps
    1) fully charge the ipod and then see if the symptoms reoccur
2)if it does, no point in resetting the ipod... instead update the computer with the latest ipod softwarre updater and restore the ipod with it..the contents of the ipod will be deleted you have to redownload them from your computer...now see if the problem reoccurs
3)if yes then you have to walk in to a nearest apple store maybe your ipod needs a service...no need to jump to conclusion that the ipod isnt working first follow the steps...

  • Popping and static during playback

When I am playing music through iTunes there is a static popping sound in the background. This occurs through speakers and headphones (brand new Bose) but does not happen when listening to the same songs on my iPod. As far as I can tell it is happening on my entire library. Any help or suggestions?

I found a nearly complete solution here:
    http://www.geekzone.co.nz/juha/1308
It says to reduce the Quicktime Audio Tab setting from 24 bit to 16 bit.
It was easy and made a big difference (90% of prpoblem seems solved)

  • Cracking during playback in 3.0

Hi, first let me say that I have done a lot of research trying to fix this, to no avail.
    Here's the issue:
When playing back a multitrack, there is random crackling in the audio.  It's not recorded into the audio files themselves (you can see in the waveform), but when I export, some of the cracks and pops are actually there.
    Also...
I have 4 gigs of ram, 2.66 ghz duo core processor, and a 500 gb 7200 rpm hard drive.  When watching the task manager while audio is playing (after closing all memory hogs, Itunes, internet, etc) I can see audition jump around from 0-12 CPU usage (while every other program is 0-2), and all of the crackling coincides with these spikes.
    What I'm using:
    Windows Vista
    Presonus Firepod
    Audition 3.0
Sound Card - SoundBlaster X-FI Fatality
The crackling playback occurs no matter what drivers I use - AA 3.0 sound, ASIO4ALL, and even the firepod ones will crackle when I listen to playback through the headphone slot.
I also never had this problem when I ran Audition 1.5 on Windows XP, but I really don't want to downgrade.  I have tried recording to my external hard drive, and it seems to do the same thing.
I attached a JPEG showing what my CPU usage looks like during playback.
I will kiss you if you can solve this problem, Audition 3.0 is soooooooo much nicer than 1.5!
Also interesting to note - I just installed 1.5 on this computer and ran it in compatability mode.  I cannot record in 1.5 (due to some thing being out of date) but the playback it flawless.  I can do all sorts of things with the processes and no static or popping during playback.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the help.  Buttttt I really wanted to record something that day and ended up reformatting and going back to XP.  Ever since then, absolutely no problems at all.
    To answer your responses though:
I tried looking for buffer size in the hardware options, but did not even see it.  I did increase the cache size (if that's the same thing, not sure) considerably, but the problem persisted.
Yes, even during edit view I would get some crackling, though not as much.
The interesting thing is I didn't even have any effects applied!  I had 2 dry tracks that both would crackle upon playback.  During recording, I would also get the skips in the audio.  It was awful.
Anyways, thanks a lot, some really good advice here so I will stick around.  I'd rather downgrade the OS and get the benefits of the real time effects editing that's available in 3.0.  It must have just been a problem with audio drivers and the OS?

  • Skips & Scratch Noises during playback ...

I am all of a sudden getting skips & scratch noises during playback on certain albums during playback on Itunes and it transferred over to my ipod ... What could be causing this and how can I get rid of it.  ( No it is not the CD it was burned from cause it sounds perfect playing on other devices)
thanks for any ideas or tips :-)

I have observed this with my 4th gen Nano. The sound is pristine through the headphone jack, but when connected via some (older) dock devices there are little bursts of static every few moments.
I have tried this with a Bose Sounddock and a Tivoli iSongbook. Same thing. The little static bursts are NOT repeatable (random), and do NOT appear in headphones. Most people would probably never notice this noise, especially if they play only rock music. Music with less percussive sound reveals the problem more easily.
The very same files played through the dock devices on my old 3rd Gen iPod sound perfect.
I was getting ready to ask Apple to exchange my Nano for another to see if that has any effect. Other than this issue, I love it and it works great.

  • IPod Nano 4G Skips During Playback with Apple Lossless Songs

My iPod Nano 4th Generation has been consistently skipping a brief portion of music about every 5th Apple Lossless song during playback. I've been working unsuccessfully to resolve this issue with tech support and fixed the problem when I disabled the energy level setting in the playback menu. While this is a hit to battery life, the skipping no longer occurs. Hoping that this issue is permanently resolved in an upcoming software update.

    Hi,
I brought my ipod yesterday and had the exact same issue. it would skip certain songs frequently and was extremely frustrating. Im not sure if this is the case for all ipods (i have an ipod nano 16Gb 4th gen, with firmware 1.0.4), but i fixed my issue in a series of steps. Im not sure which exact part of my method did the job, but here it is:
    1. plugged it into iTunes and clicked "restore" under the tab "summary". WARNING: This will delete everything, and restore factory settings. im not sure if this is necessary, but youll need to delete the songs which skip anyway.
    2. pressed the eject button IN ITUNES (under "devices", and next to your ipod icon), ejecting the ipod. wait for the ipod to specify when it is ready for it to be unplugged. proceed to unplug said ipod.
    3. Choose the language of your ipod, and go into playback settings and (settings/playback or something) and turn OFF "shake" and "energy saver"
    4. Plug your ipod into your computer again and drag all the songs onto your ipod using itunes.
    5. after it has finished copying, WAIT until the ipod no longer says "synching", and until it says "connected"
    6. Press the eject button IN ITUNES (again, under devices, and next to your ipod icon)
    7. Eject when the ipod says it is ok to do so.
As i said, im not sure which part of the method did it for me, but i think it might be the way in which i was ejecting it. Before i was ejecting the ipod on my desktop. I think it is important to eject it using itunes. Anyway this fixed my ipod. Im not sure if it will do the same to yours, but if its making you very angry (to say the least) like it made me, its worth a try i guess. I would appreciate it if people let me know if this works.

  • External monitor frozen during playback

I am having trouble with my monitor not PLAYING during playback. I get an image when I scroll through the timeline but when I play - the image is frozen.. As soon as playback stops, the monitor refreshes to the correct frame - but it doesn't show during playback.
We have tried all these steps already:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
7 ) If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
What is really mindboggling is that the monitor is working in terms of giving us the correct image - just not during playback.
    PLease help - thanks.

I think you may be onto something with the graphics card concept. The problem I am having only exists when I am working on an HD project. When I switched back to DV-NTSC then the monitor is fine during playback.
Yes, I am routing my external monitor through my DV deck, which is not an HD deck - so again, that could be another weak link in the chain.
This is the first HD project that I am editing, so obviously a few kinks still need to be worked out. My internal hard drive has 1.5 gigs of ram but I am not sure what the specs are on the graphics card.

  • Audio levels on an external monitor vary during playback when using HDMI audio

I've been having issues with movie playback using a large 1080p HDMI TV.   During playback the audio level will come in strong, go faint, then go strong again, but not on any sort of pattern I could discern.   It did this on three seperate movies legally purchased via iTunes.  I get audio and video without trouble, its just the audio goes soft when it shouldn't.
If you remember the VHS days and "MACROVISION" encoding, then you have an idea what it was doing, although it was the audio levels, not the video playback.
Is this a fault of the system, a DRM gremlin, or something else?

What is causing and how do you fix a song stopping during playback? I have latest iTunes 12.0.1 and Yosemite 10.10.1.
It stops then after several seconds (like 25 secs) then it starts again ... and then several seconds later it stops again!
I have the latest software so I don't know what to do?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Why does my 16gb 6th generation ipod nano skip and stutter during playback?

Why does my 16gb 6th generation ipod nano skip and stutter during playback?

    Try a hard reset first.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button
until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds,
    and then the Home screen.
If that doesn't work, try a restore of the device in iTunes.
Otherwise, does this skipping and stuttering only happen with certain tracks?  What format are these tracks in and where they come from (outside of iTunes or from the iTunes store itself)?

  • Actions which include Set Reference Pt via Transform Panel failing consistently during playback

The title pretty much says it all. I have two different Windows XP machines, both got upgraded to CS 6 (the x.0.0 release, the Release Notes for the x.0.1 don't directly address this, but if this topic pulls up blank, I may go that route... it requires running an approval gauntlet via IT, otherwise I'd already have done it).
    Repeatable problem is this:
    0. Create and select an object. Even a basic rectangle will do.
    1. Creat a new Action.
    2. Begin recording.
    3. In the Transform Panel, specify a new Reference Point that isn't the lower right (if your machines are like mine, you will get a "double hit" of the same Action step, no matter how gently you click on the new Reference Point). I say "not the lower right" for a reason in a second.
    4. Feel free to make a couple other numeric transforms in the Transform Panel. I tried adjusting Width and Height.
    5. Stop recording.
    6. Undo back to the original state (though I suppose it isn't necessary to deomnstrate the point)
    7. Run the Action.
First thing, the Set Reference Point seems to be utterly ignored, *or* sometimes it sets to the lower right and stays stuck there. I made one Action that was just a series of moving the Reference Point around a rectangle clockwise. The Action failed after the first Set and then stayed locked on the lower right for no discernible reason.
In an attempt to revisit some old Actions that were working without fail under 5.5, I loaded those. For those imported Actions, every time playback hit a step calling for a "Transform Panel," it would return an error dialog "The object "Transform Panel" is not currently available."
What in the blue blazes is going on here? Needless to say, this is taking a wrecking ball to our dozen mission-critical Action Sets, which all rely upon setting transforms to fit particular spaces automatically, precisely and consistently, and which, I might add, worked fine under 5.5.
On the positive side, the bug where movement of objects by their X,Y coordinates via the Transform Panel during Playback seems to be fixed. So, I guess there's that.
    Help?
P.S. Addendum: if anyone on CS6 (16.0.0 and/or 16.0.1) can at least run through the test case above and either confirm or deny that I am crazy to be witnessing this, that would be helpful, too.

    I FIXED IT!!!
How? I made a simple Action that just recorded my changing the reference point around an object clockwise, saved the Action, then cracked it open in a text editor (Wordpad, in my case).
Most of the items aren't terribly useful (for instance, Adobe, why are dialog texts in machine code rather than human-readable strings? That's be darn handy), BUT at the end of each step of the Action (called Events), I noticed that there was a variable being set to "8" every time. Yes, there are 9 possible reference points, but you need to think like a programmer/computer here. Yep, the first point isn't "1," it's "0." So, counting left-to-right, top-to-bottom gives you...
    0 = Top Left
    1 = Top Middle
    7 = Bottom Middle
    8 = Bottom Right
So it isn't the playback that's at fault, it's THE ACTION RECORDER getting it wrong. I changed that last "8" variable to a "1" and brought it back into Illustrator and ta-da! My reference point gets accurately set at the Top Middle and proceeds from there! YAY! HAPPY DANCE!
    PS Adobe, YOU'RE WELCOME.

  • CPU overload during playback and record

This happens here and there but is not a consistent problem, and for that reason I feel that it can be corrected. Out of the blue, during playback or record, all of the sudden my CPU meter will start spiking and the audio will start getting interrupted until it just gives up and I get a dialogue box saying overload. I always make sure all other applications are closed to avoid this. What else can I do?

    1. Have an empty Audio Track selected during playback (= no need for Logic to wait for realtime MIDI input)
    2. Increase Audio Buffer
    3. Turn off "safety" buffer. "safety" is very misunderstandig... In fact, it makes things unsafer in terms of playback stability. (BTW: Did anyone find out which "safety" is meant, anyway?)
    4. Turn off Airport, go offline, turn off antivirus and such things. Just let Logic be the only big application running.
    5. After some playbacks, the caches should provide enough information so that Logic runs more smooth than with the first playback. So - if you need Logic as live tool, let it play the project once or twice before.
