First Gen iMac g5 shuts down randomly... and won't restart

My first gen iMac shuts off randomly, sometimes when I am not even in the room... and it takes 20 attempts at restarting before it will... the other times it shuts down during startup... I know there was an extended warranty for the power supply because it was defective... I had the same problem a few years ago and supposedly had the power supply fixed... now it is happening again and the extended warranty expired in Dec. 2008... which is bull... because if they fixed it the first time I would not be having the problem again... is this an easy fix? I can't even get in touch with anyone at apple for less than $29... which is also bull

If, in fact, your iMac G5 is a first generation unit, you may be affected by an issue involving defective capacitors on the logic board. This is reasonably easy to determine simply by removing the back, and examining the clusters of electrolytic capacitors for evidence of bloating or leakage. Affected components typically show an upward expansion or slight 'mushrooming' of the otherwise flat top of a capacitor.
If there is no evidence that this is the case, then the issue can typically be addressed by the replacement of the power supply. Units intended for use in later models prior to the release of the iMac which used an intel processor are backward compatible with earlier models. For the 20 inch iMac G5, the appropriate 'universal' replacement power supply would be a 661-3625 and is available here* for a more reasonable price than that typically advertised by other suppliers. The same company offers a non-advertised service in which all potentially affected capacitors on a defective logic board are replaced for $ 189.00. A bad board may, or may not, also require the replacement of the power supply. Such a determination can be made only after a unit with a defective logic board is submitted for repair.

  • S 4 Shuts down randomly and won't restart

    Hello,
I brought and S 4 7/27 and loved it for the first few days. A few days later it started shutting down randomly and the only way to restart is to take the battery out. That works for an hour or so until it shuts down again. I've tried uninstalling all the apps I've installed but I still get the same result.
    Any sugestions?
    Thansk,
    twinsfan

twinsfan2013, the software for some 3rd party applications can affect the performance of your device. Although you've uninstalled a few application, the issue may still remain on your phone. I recommend that you back up your device at Verizon's cloud or Backup Assistance and then hard reset your phone if the power cycling issue persists. • IPod Nano shuts down randomly and doesn't restart unless connected

This happened to me two days ago. I was working on a pool listening to a podcast, with the iPod in my pocket. I was wearing black pants and it was very hot, so I'm not sure if it's simply an issue of overheating, but what happened was while I was listening to the podcast the iPod completely shut down. I took it out of my pocket and tried to reset it holding the menu and center buttons, but the iPod wouldn't respond to this. The iPod was completely charged the night before so I'm sure this isn't an issue. I took it home and hooked it up to my computer and it worked fine. But today, it did the same thing, listening to the same podcast (TalkRadar) and wouldn't respond to the menu and center buttons again, but it responded to plugging it in to the computer. Something else happened, too, the iPod would turn on and off randomly even while connected to the computer and I would have to unplug the iPod and re-plug it back in. Does anybody have an idea of what the problem is? I want to know whether or not I should send it in for repair.

If resetting or restoring the ipod does not work, take it to an Apple Store. Let the staff examine it. If you have Apple Care, call them.

  • MacBook wont wake up from sleep, shuts down randomly, and won't burn. . .

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 from Tiger (and also purchased and installed Office Mac 2008), it will not wake up from sleep. If I close it while it is still awake, (which I normally would without problems before I upgraded) it will not wake up when I open it; the screen just stays black and I have to use the power button to restart it. This also happens when it falls asleep naturally after being on screen saver. It is a really big annoyance and I know that it must be damaging my computer.
Also, now it will randomly shut down if it does not have the power adapter plugged in, which never happened before.
ALSO, my CD burn attempts will fail midway and say "medium write error".
Can my computer not handle all of the new software I put on it or something? I feel as though it's slowly deteriorating, and it's not even 2 years old. Do I need to buy more memory or disk space? I am really clueless as to how to fix these problems. I'm only 16 and really can't afford to spend money on getting it looked at, so PLEASE help

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
You need to give us more info about your computer: RAM, speed, HD size, freespace etc.
Look at the activity monitor and console logs for potential issues.
Normally a computer will run faster and better with Leopard.
You need to take inventory of any Tiger apps that are not Leopard compatible that may be problematic. Also check what items you have in your login pane.
Have you recently run the disk utility and repaired HD and permissions?

  • Eqium M40X-189 powers itself down randomly and won't restart easily

A few days ago my Equim M40X shut itself down while unattended (running from mains power with battery in place). All that was on was the green mains power light. Pressing the start button had no effect. I removed the battery and replaced it - still no joy. Took it to my local computer repair shop - they claimed at first there was nothing wrong, but when I came to collect it would not start. They "reseated power board connector and touch pad connector, and tested 15 times - switches on and off correctly" 25 the poorer I took it home. Next day- same problem. Eventually got it to start, but after 1 minute it shut down. Restarted again and ran OK several hours. Today, would not start. Took the battered out completely - started OK, but shut down after 2 hours or so. I can usually get it going by uplugging the mains and/or the battery, but have no idea how long it will go before shutting itself down.
    Please help!!

Hmmm. its really hard to say what could be wrong
Usually the notebook shuts down automatically due to the high temperature
Maybe the cooling modules are clogged by dust and debris its worth to clean the cooling fans and to renew the thermal grease which is placed between the cooling module and CPU
But this is a job for an ASP technician as mentioned by Jeka
Therefore get in contact with the local ASP and ask for help!
    Good luck

My ipad2 shut down randomly and than start. Problem is remain after reset. What is the solution.

You can try restoring your iPad as new using iTunes on your computer. This will load a new copy of the iOS software onto your iPad.
If this doesn't work you may have a hardware problem and will need to contact Apple Support.

You have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
What you can do to use it is download gfxcardstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.
You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar. Take along a printout of your panic.

My MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly and won't connect to wifi now. All other devices in my house are connecting to the wifi just fine. The laptop just refuses to connect. Any ideas on how to fix this/what it might mean?

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for "A battery you should not remove yourself"
Check the mage safe connector and port for any debris.

  • IMac 20" shutting down randomly

    Hey folks,
My iMac has been shutting down randomly a couple of times a day. It's been happening ever since I purchased the machine (April, 2008) and more often when its warmer (I live in Los Angeles). I've taken the computer in for a check up and the Genius Bar said that they couldn't replicate the problem. They had the computer over over a week.
Now that it's getting warmer these days, I'm finding my iMac shutting down more often. Does anyone else have this problem? Any luck with the Genius Bar?
I've seen my hard drive reach 65ºC and the rest of the components in the high 50's, low 60's. As a temporary solution, I'm running smc fan control to try to keep things cool.
    Thanks!

Hi, a couple of questions -> Applecare? Have you contacted Apple Customer Relations?
I would also document everything you do from when you Start Up, times etc., Apps etc.
If you have a digital camera with movie, load it up with a large memory card & set it on a table near your computer & run it until you capture the shut down..After that Apple will take action...
Recently my 2 laptops MBPro 14mths old/MB 7 months old - Both had issues, after a few tests via AppleHelp still no joy - Apple replaced both with the latest models...
If the Genius can't help - Ask for the Manager...

  • Shutting down randomly and racing motor when trying to restart

    Hello,
Having a couple of ongoing issues with my G5. The first one is that it is shutting down randomly. If I'm in the room when it happens, it will emit a couple of clicking sounds then shut off. This just happened and I lost some work on Final Cut as I had not time to save it.
The second issue is when I try to re-start it the motor just gradually builds until it is roaring a bit. I then hit the button to shut it off. Wait about 15 minutes and then turn it on.
I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to correct these issue on my own.
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    John

Hi John, have you blown the dust out lately, or if liquid cooled looked for leaks.corrosion?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    And/or iStat Pro...

If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.

  • I downloaded silverlight to watch netflix but then my mac shut down suddenly and won't turn back on. How do i get it to turn on?

It's a brand new laptop and when i downloaded silverlight to stream netflix, it worked for like half an hour and then my computer just shuts down. i turn it on again and delete silverlight but a couple minutes later it shuts down again and this time it won't turn back on.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

  • Boot Camp shut down randomly and took 170GB of space with it?

I own an iMac and I was trying to install bootcamp. I started to partition the disk and I used 170 GB of space for Windows. It was almost half way when my screen froze completely. I had to force shutdown and I turned it back and everything worked perfectly. I checked my disk and it said I only had 10GB left. I did the math and I figured out whenever Boot Camp Assistant shut down, so did my space. Any help?

This can be fixed. First, make a backup of your files.
To do it, I need that you start your iMac from the Snow Leopard disc, holding the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, choose the language and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility.
Now, you will see your OS X volume in the sidebar as Macintosh HD, so select it and repair the drive.
After doing that, select the hard drive at the top of the sidebar and go to Partition tab, so you will see a bar with Macintosh HD and grey space. The only thing you have to do is tp press Macintosh HD at the bottom right corner and drag it to the end of the sidebar. Finally, press Apply and restart the Mac

  • IMac shut down suddenly and won't boot back up

This morning my iMac shut down suddenly.  All I had open was Google Chrome and I was just on Facebook and that's it.  When I tried to boot it back up, it wouldn't load past the startup sound, wherein it would appear to shut back down,or at the very least the screen would go black (my mouse has lights that stay on when the computer is on, and the light kept going on and off while the screen remained black).  This was the case for at least a half hour until it suddenly booted itself back up all on its own.  I had it on throughout the day, just browsing the internet and watching Youtube. It shut itself down twice during the day, and both times it restarted on its own right away after showing me a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar.  Now it just shut itself down again and it won't make it past the progress bar screen - if it even makes it that far, sometimes it shuts off right after it makes the startup sound.  It keeps trying to boot up on its own over and over again, but it keeps shutting down right away.  All the fixes I've searched for so far require a computer that actually boots up all the way so I don't think I could run any reports if I tried!
I'm running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.2?).
    Model number A1311
Not entirely sure what specs are useful to know so I'm just gonna write some of what's on the box it came in:
    3.2 GHz Intel i3 processor, 4MBshared level 3 cache
    4GB of 1333MHz DDR SDRAM
    1TB serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory
Bought it around fall of 2010.  Not sure if it's worth trying to get it fixed (I live nowhere near an Apple store) or if I should just get a new computer, but I would like to know what's wrong, if possible.

Try to boot into the Recover Partition by holding down the Command + R keys on startup. If it still won't boot then the HD has probably crashed. The is likely a AASP in your area, you can locate one by clicking AASP Locator, take it to one to be professional diagnosed. If it's only the HD, assuming you have been backing up, restoring to a new HD is pretty simple.
