First-gen MacBook Pro and dual-layer DVD+R?
I have a first-generation MacBook Pro (2 GHz Core Duo) running Leopard 10.5.2. I have been given a dual-layer DVD+R, which has a 5 GB AVI file on it that I need to work with. The issue I'm having is, while the MacBook Pro can read the DVD and see the AVI file, when I attempt to copy the AVI to my Desktop, the file gets roughly halfway copied and then I get an error saying that some or all of the file cannot be read. Could this be an issue with my particular model of MacBook Pro and DVD+R DVDs? Is there any way I can get to this file? Any help would be most appreciated.

As I understand it, there's a difference between stamped dual layer DVDs (which most movie DVDs are) and burned dual layer DVDs (which is the DVD I have). I actually have 2 other Macs in the house - a dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 (June 2004 model) and a 1.66 GHz Core Duo Mac Mini. Both Macs simply spit out the DVD about 5 or 10 seconds after I insert it. I'm suspecting it's an issue with the DVD type, but if anyone could shed some light I'm appreciate it. Many thanks!

First Gen MacBook Pro and no firewire 800. Suggestions for capturing video?
My first gen MacBook Pro only has one Firewire 400 port and nothing else (I got in a argument with a mac store clerk regarding the truth of this statement). My external hard drive has one Firewire 400 port, two Firewire 800 ports, and 1 USB. So far as I know the standard for most video cameras are still Firewire 400, in which case daisy chaining is out of the question (considering I will be using that port to connect to my computer). Any suggestions on how to capture video straight from a deck to my external hard drive?
Thanks!
MacBookPro1,1 Mac OS X (10.4.9)I think you can use a FW800/400 adapter and daisy chain your camera to the drive.

Maximizing HD Video with iDVD/DVD Studio Pro and dual layer DVD
I have 30 minutes of edited home video from iMovie HD and I am trying to use iDVD to burn the project. I have a dual layer DVD+ disk and would like to maximize the quality of the project to 8 gigs. Each time I change the project info, etc. the project still is just 1 gig. Any suggestions, please....
iDVD produces NTSC/PAL videoDVDs within the specs given by the socalled Red Book Standards...- max bitrate is 8 - 9kB/sec... which is, in your case 30min=1GB
(but: iDVD "wastes" a lot of bandwidth for PCM audio....)
DVDSP/Compressor allows a manual setting of bitrates, so you can devide the max. rate wiser between audio and video... but some dvdplayers (esp. software ones in the PC world) don't handle such high bitrates...
as said above, no homebrewn HiDef DVD so far, lets see, what 10.5 and the new ProMacs will bring to us.... -
New Airport Extreme to First Gen MacBook Pro Losing Connectivity
I just purchased the latest Airport Extreme and am having severe issues between my MacBook Pro and the Airport Extreme. My wireless connection will appear to "hang" as according to the menu bar icon it will appear connected but if I click the drop down it does not show any status information (whether is it connected via PPPoE or not) on the wireless network the Airport Extreme is providing. During the time that no status information is provided the Macbook Pro is unable to access anything across the wireless. Other computers (non-macs) that are using the wireless continue to work fine as if there are no issues so it appears that it has to do with how my Macbook Pro is receiving connectivity information. Sometimes it seems that I can get it to start working again if I click wireless network icon and it rescans for wireless networks. I am currently unsure whether its using wireless A or G (this is a first gen MacBook Pro) but will try to determine that.

Inherited first gen Macbook Pro
Hey everyone, I have a somewhat vague question. I recently swapped computers with my wife, inheriting her first generation Macbook Pro, which has surprisingly withstood the test of time. Right now I'm trying to maximize the performance so that I can make it through to the next product cycle. It can handle basic tasks. Ideally, I would like to be able to run multiple programs (Powerpoint/Keynote, large PDFs, Chrome, Word), but the computer tends to lag down. The specs are in my signature; the hard drive is about 90% full (93 gb capacity), not sure the RPM. Activity monitor typically shows >1 gb of RAM free.
Would you recommend running any diagnostics, new software or hardware? Is there a cost effective way of installing SSD, or am I better off waiting for prices to go down? My goal is to become more Mac savvy and autonomous, so if you can point me towards any good (ideally free) resources, I'd be very appreciative!
Thanks, and happy New Year.Welcome from me too!
Definitely replace the hard drive with a bigger one--100 GB is just not big enough, and besides, it's likely getting to the end of its useful life as it must be 5 years old now. You can likely look up the specs on the manufacturer's web site using the serial number.
You could try running SMART Utility:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may pick up impending hard drive failure sooner.
You can use any SATA drive that is no more than 9.5 mm tall, which means you cannot use any of the 1 TB drives that are 12.5 mm tall. There are many 500 GB drives around, including a hybrid from Seagate which is supposed to be very fast. There are even some 750 GB drives around that are 9.5 mm tall.
If the old drive has your wife's stuff on it, you can just put it in an enclosure and give it back to her. Then you can set up the new drive with your stuff. You might check on OWC's web site--they have drive kits, which includes an enclosure for the old drive. Also check with Newegg and Tiger Direct, as they often have specials on drives.
There's even one on theSeagate hybrid:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591
Western Digital's Scorpio Black is also an excellent drive, and not nearly as expensive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136692
It seems to be sold out, but I'm sure they will get more in.
Do you want to install the drive yourself? Check out ifixit for step by step directions. If you don't, your local AASP can do it for you.
There is a ton of free resources on the Apple site, including many video tutorials for new Mac users. ifixit and powerbook medic are also free resources if you want to work on your Mac yourself, with lots of step-by-step instructions.
Good luck, and happy New Year to you too! -
First gen Macbook pro will not turn back on after grey screen of death
Hi, i have a first generation Macbook Pro. As i was browsing the web, my computer all the sudden froze and the "grey screen of death" appeared and shut of my computer. After, it tried to restart, but it wont get past the CD rom or hard drive noise it makes once you press the power button. I hear the noise fully cycle once, then it restarts the noise and keeps skipping. Once its done, the computer IS on, but the screen is black and I cannot do anything. Please help! Ive never dealt with thins kind of problem and Im sort of a noob with computers. Is the computer fried? It is after all 7 years old, and I use it daily.
After the startup sound (be precise) after the sound press the shift Key until the apple appear.
If that wont work. Try an SMC reset
Then try a PRAM reset
This procedures are on apple webpage -
Major heat issues with first gen Macbook Pro
It sure seems like I should be able to find an easy answer for this, but I can't.
I have (I believe) a first generation Macbook Pro. 2ghz processor, 2gb of RAM (maxed), running 10.5.8.
When running streaming videos on it, the temperature gets absolutely out of control. 194-200 degrees (F) for the CPU, and over 120 degrees on the bottom case. This is WITH the fans going at almost 6,000 RPM, and the computer is elevated at the corners in order to allow for airflow underneath.
There's a lot of separation between the top and bottom pieces near the bottom left of the computer (the corner near the Z key), if that means anything. What the heck is happening here, and can I do anything to fix this without spending hundreds of dollars at a repair shop?can I do anything to fix this without spending hundreds of dollars at a repair shop?

I've been perusing the forum and see a lot of questions about this but not a lot of good answers.
We have a G5 Mac, with a SuperDrive, OS X 4.11 and iDVD 5.0.1. My wife does a lot of photo/video work and has done several dual layer DVDs with no problems; there's a radio button that lets her select dual layer media.
Last summer the SuperDrive went south and the local Apple dealer replaced it with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-875S. The specs for this drive say it supports writing dual layer media. System Profiler agrees: it supports writing dual layer DVDs.
iDVD doesn't agree: the radio button has disappeared and there is no way to select dual layer media. This is a problem as she has a project sitting here that will not fit on single layer media.
We've tried Patchburn: nothing.
We've tried a forced update for iDVD 5.0.1: nothing.
Don't really want to go to Toast: another set of software for her to learn and me to support.
At this point, it looks like either having the dealer pull this drive and put in a for-real Apple-branded SuperDrive or find a copy of iLife 06 (to get iDVD 6; it looks like '6 is the latest we can go without updating the OS as well). Cost is about the same either way but I'd rather not pay it if I can avoid it.
I'm looking for other suggestions or ideas.I cannot remember the options for iDVD 5 or 6. I am now using iDVD 08, and it has a dropdown bar in Preferences where one can choose single or dual layer. I would go with iLife 6. See if you can find a disk for sale somewhere ....maybe ebay? If the price is higher than the original cost of $79, or if you cannot locate an iLife 06 disk, email me. I may be able to put you in touch with a place that has a few of them left.

First Gen MacBook Pro 15 Retina Mavericks Reboots Randomly
Please help me find the problem, my macbook has been rebooting on itself, sometimes immediately following another reboot. In fact as I was writing this thread it rebooted again, thankfully the forum let me recover it.
Below I've pasted the 2 crash reports.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
FIRST GEN MAC PRO AND THE 8800GT
I am just about to press the BUY NOW button.
will the 8800gt upgrade kit work on my mac pro?
Pretty sure is was bought in 2007
the spec is:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 5 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
SMC Version: 1.7f10
Also...
When they say upgrade kit - it is just a standalone card right?
I don't need any other card to work with this?
Thanks Dan
ps - sorry for being a total tech noviceRe the statement in Barefeats' 2600 vs 8800 test that the latter's 3D advantage should also apply when used in pro apps using OpenGL (like After Effects preview), there are those who claim frame rate is mainly a result of the amount of RAM installed and not the video card used:
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/919134 (older article though).
Then there is the finding by Barefeats - much to 8800 users' irritation/confusion - that the 8800 is not great at pro applications (that's the Harper10 link Hatter included).
I can only say I'm real happy with the 8800 and that it hasn't let me down once so far.

MacBook Pro won't read DVD+R media?
I have a first gen MacBook Pro, 15" 1.83GHz Core Duo processor with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 drive.
I have a number of data discs that I have written to DVD+R media (using another computer). When I place them in my drive, the MBP doesn't recognize the disc. I also have some DVD video I burned on DVD+R media, and the same thing: the MBP won't recognize the disc.
Anyone know why? It can read DVD-R just fine, but I haven't yet gotten it to read DVD+R at all.I use a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo and I am
experiencing the same issues where this MacBook will
not recognize Memorex DVD+R 4x discs burned on a
Lacie external 16x drive. Unfortunately for me, all
my backups over the last year are on these discs,
which seem to work in every other player or Powerbook
I have needed to load them on.
In general, Memorex uses the cheapest quality media possible to maintain their price point. Usually, this means Ritek and Prodisc media, which both vary widely in quality. Sometimes the media is great, other times crap.
Seems like the MacBook Pro drive has issues reading crap discs unfortunately. -
Ugrade first gen mac pro graphics card
I have a first Gen Mac Pro and want to upgrade the graphics card for better performance with programs like C4D and After Effects....any recomendations?
The graphics card can't be upgraded. It is soldered to the logic board. Unless you actually mean a Mac Pro desktop as opposed to a MacBook Pro, in which case I know nothing about Mac Pros.

I have recently purchased my first Mac (MacBook Pro) and I have several Word Perfect (.wpd) documents. I have not been able to open these documents and I am wondering if there is a way to do this. I have both iWorks and Office for a Mac
If you have iWorks, Pages should open them. For a free solution, try Open Office.

Dual layer DVD-R versus Dual layer DVD+R
Is there a difference between dual layer DVD-R discs and dual layer DVD+R discs? On a related note, is there a difference between dual layer DVD-RW discs and dual layer DVD+RW discs? Is one )-R vs +R, for example) better than the other?
OK, after what I've read in the link, the impression I got is that DVD+R is more reliable than the DVD-R . . . and since my alum Intel iMac is capable of reading adn burning to both, I shouldn't have any problems using a DVD+R. Am I correct?

Macbook Pro doesn't seem to read Dual Layer DVDs
I was trying to restore my laptop using the original restore/install dvds that came with it. When I slip the installation discs into the optical drive, my Mac doesn't seem to read them; it just ejects them.
But I tried inserting audio CDs, data DVDs (4GB max in size) and they seem to work and recognized by my mac. My mac doesn't recognize the installation discs only. I have even went the extra mile of purchasing another Snow Leopard installation disc and the disc, which is sealed, new and fresh from the store also got ejected by the machine. I have read somewhere that the installation discs are Dual Layer DVDs. Seems like my optical drive is not reading dual layers discs anymore.
Any advice how I can mitigate this? Are there any firmware updates that I can upgrade or downgrade to? How will I know which firmware my optical drive is running on?
Thanks! You can reset the SMC and see if that helps. If it's a unibody or Retina, follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

Why a max of 50 snapshots with Hyper-V?
I realize the more snapshots Hyper-V has the more inefficient the machine gets - by the time you get to 50 it must be crawling. I was wondering, however, why is the limit 50? Is this an arbitrary number for the sake of efficiency, or is the limit due
