First Generation iPod being temperamental

My first generation iPod (with the firewire and actual spinning wheel) has recently started acting up. While playing, it'll stop on its own and freeze. When I reboot it (holding play and menu), it'll do one of the following:
1) it shows a file folder with an exclamation point (so I reboot again)
2) it'll start up, but freeze while I'm scrolling through the menus
3) it'll start up fine and play music normally.
It's never acted up like this before. However, it being 6 years old, I knew it was going to start acting up soon, but I thought the battery was going to be the first to go. Anyone have any thoughts before I take it to the Apple Store to have them tell me that they don't support it anymore and to get a new one?

It may in fact be the battery that is causing your problem, with the hard drive being the next likely suspect. You can order a battery kit from several places and install it yourself, but after 6 years isn't it time for a new one?
There are also 3rd party sites you can send it to for repair, if they can get parts for one that old. Two examples are http://www.iresq.com and http://www.ipodmods.com. You can also go to http://www.ifixit.com and they have videos showing you how to disasseble and reassemble your iPod..

  • First generation iPod not recognized by iTunes

I recently acquired a first generation iPod, (2001), which appears to be in excellent condition. It has a few dozen songs on it and it played them for over 4 hours before I stopped it with the battery icon still showing 3 bars. My problem is I can't get it to be recognized by iTunes. I tried it first with my current intel iMac and the finder wouldn't even show it although disk utility did. I then tried it on a 10 year old iMac G5 running OS 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6.3. itunes still won't recognize it but it shows up in the finder as an iPod icon with a firewire icon and the ipod also shows the same when connected to the computer. I think this means that it is in disk mode but I can't get out of it. I've tried every step in the Apple suggestions to no avail. I really want to put my own music on this iPod but obviously can't do anything until I can get iTunes to recognize it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • I have the first generation ipod shuffle. I was wandering if apple can still fix them.

I have the first generation ipod shuffle. I was wandering if apple can still fix this ipod. please let me know.

Considering the cost for a new current gen shuffle, I don't think it will be an economical repair.  That USB connector is connected to a very thin ribbon cable that runs up the shuffle inside the case.  If its USB connector came off and is lost, that means the ribbon cable got torn off.  So the shuffle will need to be disassembled and a new part (USB connector with its ribbon cable) installed.  And that's significant labor.
However, if you are good at fixing small things
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPod-Shuffle-1st-Generation-USB-Port/426/ 1#.T9J_ZI7wzpA
I've done it before.  You'll need to acquire a broken iPod shuffle 1st gen, but one that has a working USB connector.  That's the most common failure for these iPods, so make sure it is described as being recognized by the computer/iTunes or something like, "It works but the battery is dead."

  • Do all first generation ipod nano's prebuffer the next track?

do all first generation ipod nano's prebuffer the next track?
have they always? the first gen that is.
what i mean by prebuffer is does the firmware load the next track in memory as the current track is being played ?

As far as I know, the flash memory used in the nano is one big buffer.
It doesn't work like hd based iPods where the songs are pre-loaded into a 32mb (or 64mb) buffer and played from there.

  • HT4623 PLEASE HELP! I have the first generation ipod touch and cannot update the software.

I have the first generation ipod touch with the ios 3.01. I cannot find a way to update the software because I can no longer download apps or really do anything with it. Please help.

The 1G iPod can only go as high as 3.1.3

  • I cant download apps on my first generation ipod

i cant download apps on my first generation ipod touch. it keeps saying update required iOS 4.0

Your 1G iPod Touch cannot be upgraded past iOS 3.1.3.   Many apps that are available in the App Store not require a higher version of iOS (such as iOS 4) in order to be compatible with your device. So if an app requires a higher version of iOS than what is supported by your iPod Touch, you will not be able to sync or download that app to your device.  Sorry.

  • New Calendar and first generation iPod Touch

Since the "old" calendar will be de-activated next month, I will no longer be able to sync my first generation iPod Touch to the new calendar. I use the old calendar now on my intel iMacs, MacBook Pro, iPad 2 and my old iPod Touch. Everything works well, but there is no software download available to upgrade the older iPod Touch to sync with my newer stuff after May 5. Basically my iPod Touch becomes a music player; I need the calendar function and do not feel the justification of buying a new iPod Touch when I already have one that works well and cost a lot of money when I bought it three years ago. Why can't Apple just leave things as they are? We have the choice of which calendar we want to use, and they are taking that option away with utter disregard for those of us who have already spent our $$$$ for an iPod Touch and still need to be able to use it. I urge Apple to either offer a software upgrade or to just leave the old calendar turned on. Have a little respect for your customers.

  • First Generation IPod touch

I have a first generation IPod Touch.  Recently I lost the charge/sync cord it originally came with.  Bought a new one and the IPod has not been the same since.  First the shuffle option did not work, then the wrong album cover appeared for the song playing, now it plays the same song over and over.  Is it the new cord or is something wrong with the IPod itself?

The new cable should have nothing to do with it.
    Have you tried:
    - Resetting your iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next would be to restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Then restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod via iTunes.

  • First Generation iPod Touch stuck on updating to iOS 3.1.3

I just recenetly finally updated to iOS 3.13 for 4.95 with my first generation iPod Touch. Problem is, that it's stuck on this one screen for what seems to be a few hours. I'm new to this whole iOS thing but can someone explain to me what it is.
Here is a picture of the screen http://i.imgur.com/haeOY.jpg Also when it's connected to the computer it says it's 3.13 for the os.

Based on the responses from Niel and Diavonex, I deleted my response as it did not seem relevant. Did you follow the link that Niel provided?
I will ask my original question, just to make sure - are you certain that you have an iPod 4g and not an iPod 2g. The 2g cannot be updated past 4.2.1, so wanted to make sure about that. But if you are certain, then the best thing you can do is follow the link provided by Niel.

  • First Generation iPod Mini Pauses Between Songs

    Hello, all!
I have a first generation iPod Mini. I also have several albums that were designed to flow naturally from one song into the next with little to no break in between the songs. This does not come through in the iPod mini. There seems to be a 1 second pause in between each song. I remember reading somewhere that it is possible. I just don't know where to go in order to find that setting. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. And, yes, I checked the 5 R's.

The iPod Mini doesn't support gapless playback unfortunately. Gapless playback is only available on the 5th Generation iPod and the second generation Nano. You can read more here: What is Gapless Playback?

  • First Generation iPod Syncing Problem

    Hello,
My first generation iPod battery died a while ago, but I use it in a sound dock. I recently decided to change the music on there but when I try to sync it with iTunes, sometimes it says it can't update because the playlists no longer exist and sometimes I just get an error message from Windows saying I have a USB device which is not working properly.
    Any thoughts ?
    Message was edited by: Steve-Dave

yeah this just started happening to me too for some reason. I figured out how to fix it by reading other posts, you have to right click on the playlist, edit playlist, click + to add another rule, select "playlist" "is" "music". then re-sync. sounds more complicated than it is, but it fixed mine.

  • ITunes does not recognize my first generation iPod Shuffle

iTunes does not recognize my first generation iPod Shuffle (512MB).  Windows 7 sees the iPod as an empty external drive although the iPod has music on it.  The iPod plays the music fine.  iTunes does recognize a similar first generation iPod Shuffle.
What can be wrong with the iPod Shuffle?   How can I fix?
