First Generation Mac Mini

I just dug up an old first generation Mac Mini running 10.4.11 and it does not have a built in wireless card. My current setup has me running my macbook off a wireless connection/router.
Is there a way to hook up the mac mini directly to an additional netgear wireless router so that it can detect my wireless (that wireless router came from the provider) DSL connection? I am lost - any help is appreciated.
Thank you!
Angie

Angie,
Before you start investing money in this project, it would be good to know what your plans for this Mini are.
Since it is a PPC G4 Mini, it is fast losing OS support from Apple. And if it shipped without a wireless card, it probably also has a small hard drive and very little RAM memory.
Being first generation, it also has only 2 usb ports, so you likely would need to add a powered usb hub -- and even that may not work with all peripherals.
So ... what ARE your plans for this Mini, if we may inquire?

what type of hard drive replacement should I use to replace the hard drive on my first generation mac mini model a 1103?   G4 1.25 mhz 40 gb hd 1 gb. mem.

You'll need a 2.5" parallel ATA interface hard drive. Most are 5400RPM, forget 7200RPM drives and slower 4200rpm drives.  You don't want a serial ATA (SATA) drive, as that has a different connector and won't work.
One source I've used for drives is Newegg, and their parallel ATA hard drives are at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060000344 2&IsNodeId=1&name=IDE%20Ultra%20ATA100%20%2f%20ATA-6 .  Newegg also has many user comments about the drives. Other sources are OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on ATA on the left) . Look for at least a 3 year warranty.

  • First Generation Mac Mini Wont Go Past Start Up Screen

Last night I was doing some cleaning up on my Mac Mini (pre intel) just deleteing some pictures, some songs, stuff like that... after I was done that, I did a Verify Permissions, and a Repair Permissions.. it went very smooth.. fixed a couple of errors... then I shut down my computer.. so far nothing out of the ordinary... then later on, I went to use it again, so I turned it on... heard the chime, grey screen, grey apple logo spinny circle, all normal... except it has now stayed on the screen for HOURS..... I tried to start in safe mode, wouldnt do it, I put in my OS Disk, to try and boot from that by holding down C, wouldnt do it... I tried to reset PRAM (appleoptoion+pr) nothing... so then I tried to reset PMU (unplug everything plug in the power while holding the power button.. nothing...
can someone tell me what is going on with my mini????

I would concentrate on trying to get this thing booted from your original install disc. From there you can run DiskUtility from the Utilities menu at the top of the screen.
You'll need a usb keyboard, preferably directly connected to the Mini's usb port. The Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work for this, but just about any PC usb keyboard or other Mac usb keyboard will work. Hold down either the C key or the Option (or Alt) key as soon as you hear the startup chime (or beep).
Be sure you are using the install disc that shipped with your Mini.

  • First Generation Mac Pro (in the shop please help)

My first generation Mac Pro is in the shop and I am hoping one of the experts on the list can give me a good reason to have them go beyond what they would normally do. Effectively it is six months out of AppleCare Warranty but I was told that if there was a problem related to an earlier fix they would take care of it.
    The story:
I bought this machine with two 500 GB hard drives with one to run XP on BootCamp. I only intended to run XP software on this machine and only went back to mac due to the "do everything on your Mac that you could do on you PC" campaign. The other drive was for /eventual/ use of OSX.
About a year and a half in I bought two extra gigs of RAM to boost XP 3D software performance. I ran this for about a couple of weeks did not see much change and tried to verify that it was seeing the 4 GB. It was seeing two. I spend a couple of weeks sorting this out with Crucial (who said it was a "special issue") and then I got through to Apple and eventually sent the 2GB back.
Later I found out from a technical forum that I could "flip a switch" and get XP to recognize an extra gig of RAM via some technical settings. I bought the two GB of RAM again, installed it, and tried to run the software switch. After /endless/ go rounds with MAC I was told that the MacPro will do "anything that a PC will do" (which I tried to indicate was not the case) and that I basically had to consult the Forums. At that point I got in touch with Cupertino was told that this was a Firmware issue that could not be fixed.
I was told by the tech that I should just wait until Windows 7 comes out.
So I waited. About eight months ago I set down to upgrade the Office with a new MacBookPro with Windows 7 and I went to upgrade the MacPro with Windows 7. No go. I looked this up on a technical bulletin that described "Late 2006" Mac Pros as not running WIndows 7 (mine is 2007) and spent more time troubleshooting this.
Again after getting through to Cupertino, and having them consult the serial number I am told that this machine will not run Windows 7. Huh? I am stuck with a computer that I bought for apparent durability and endless RAM expansion and I am stuck with only 2GB or RAM which came out of the gate from the factory?
It is now in the shop for an apparent dead power source. It was previously in the shop for a weird, hairy and extremely difficult to troubleshoot (again more time) issue with the display. First it was thought to be the display, then the mother board, then something was loose, then it was the display, then we replaced the Video Card, and eventually we settled on a bad mini DVI converted they had to give me because they busted my Display when it was in for fix and had to give me another one (not complaining). After this was fixed the computer had to go in for a bad CD/DVD drive.
The question is - can I argue in any way that there is something defective with this machine and base the new problem on an old one?
Longer term, I am thinking about trying to sell it for one that will run Windows 7.
Do these things last as long as they /look/ like they should last over the long haul?
    Thanks for any help,
    Jonathan

    Hi. Look.
I do have an IT guy but I have to first be able to explain the problem to him and to do this I have to understand it myself. [BTW let's also not go down the road where I get insulted about my perceived lack of technical skills. This gets very old very quick and if you knew what I did for a living you would feel a little silly talking to me about "a couple of latches" etc. etc.)
I /also/ have to figure out what questions to ask and attempt to get some minimum amount of support from Apple. Even the Tech Supervisor at the Apple store told me two weeks ago he remembered how hard it was to get good information on this issue. The guy /works/ for Apple and he's probably /does/ have some degree in computer science.
The point is I don't have the TIME to address this issue and this will be the sixth or seventh time I have looked into it. I think this machine is not doing what it was advertised to do and I think in the past Apple would have done something for the consumer about it. It doesn't make sense for me to not say so - and it doesn't make sense for us to argue about this. The only reason something is not being done is because there is a very small class of people who are having this problem. If there were a larger class there would be a ton of comical takes on the PC Guy Ads on YouTube and they'd /have/ to do something just for the sake of the bad PR.
Perhaps I can ask you to post the links to the procedure for doing this if I get the time and decide it is worth it? Can you also clarify if this applies to both Win 64 and Win 32?
    Thanks.

  • First Generation iPod Mini Pauses Between Songs

    Hello, all!
I have a first generation iPod Mini. I also have several albums that were designed to flow naturally from one song into the next with little to no break in between the songs. This does not come through in the iPod mini. There seems to be a 1 second pause in between each song. I remember reading somewhere that it is possible. I just don't know where to go in order to find that setting. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. And, yes, I checked the 5 R's.
    Kuraitsuki

The iPod Mini doesn't support gapless playback unfortunately. Gapless playback is only available on the 5th Generation iPod and the second generation Nano. You can read more here: What is Gapless Playback?

  • What itunes version will work with a first generation ipod mini

My wife has a first generation iPod mini and wants to use it but the version of iTunes that she has on her computer will not recognize it.
Anyone know what she can do to be able to use this perfectly good device?
What was the last iTunes version to sync with this device?

The third generation iPod classic does not support BT.
If you meant the 3G iPod touch thenyou need a pair that supports:
    Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
    Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
    iOS: Supported Bluetooth profiles

I have a first edition mac mini and internal speaker are not enabled yet.. what can I do?

If you are using an HDMI connection, go to Apple / System Preferences / Sound and see if you can select the Built-In Speakers?
If you have headphones, buds or something plugged into the Audio Output jack, unplug it.
If not then perhaps the micro switch inside the Audio Output jack is stuck? In that case, try plugging and unplugging some headphones, buds or something in and out a few times to see if it will un-stick.
If it will not un-stick, then you will need to make an appointment for service.

  • First generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery, any idea why?

    Hi,
My first generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery when I restared after installing Autodesk sketchbook pro. This isnt the first time this has happened but last time I was not trying to install any software. Fortunatly, I have time machine backups and therefore have managed to recover the HD to a recent date and I intend to do a complete system check when it has finished. The first time this happened I didnt think much of it but now it has happened a second time i'm becoming a little concerned, any idea why this has happened?

I did this the first time it happened so I know that its not that i have the wrong startup disk selected. However, after the recovery had completed I tried the installation again and this time everything went smootly. so as of right now I dont have a problem. Thank you very much for your time and help.

  • Nvidia 8800GT video card in the First Generation Mac Pro

This message is a bit of advice if you install the new Nvidia 8800GT video card in the first generation Mac Pro. The advice is keep your old video card. The old video card will be needed if you ever need to reinstall the OS X operating system. This new card needs the video drivers (kernel extensions) that are in OS X leopard 10.5.2 or later. With this video card installed, both the OS X original installation disk that came with this computer and the OS X leopard upgrade disks will cause a kernel panic when booted up. This is because they do not contain the kernel extensions needed for this video card. There is a question. Does anyone know how to create and burn a reinstallation DVD with OS X leopard version 10.5.2 on it? This would help solve this reinstallation problem

this is a advisory to whom it may concern
here my latest reply from a apple product specialist how was very good and helpful but only
give me this to my upgrade answer !
i want to upgrade my graphic card to 8800 and run tiger on my 1st gen macpro
    here it goes:
"This article indicates what cards are supported in what machines: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305346
Your Mac Pro is the first generation, and did not have PCI-Express 2.0 slot like the current generation does have.
Unfortunately, we don't foresee the release of any drivers for the 10.4 OS on this machine.
In regards to the second issue, we also don't support two video cards in two slots, using a different one for eash OS, there is no supported way to do this."
"Unfortunately, the latest version of the Mac Pro will not run Tiger, as it was manufactured after the release of Leopard, therefore the drivers for the machines hardware will not be available on Tiger."
hope thats cleared some ones Q.
    kindly

  • Stop sign on first boot (mac mini 2013)

Hello, I've just turned on for the first time my Mac mini, and it seems something is wrong... apple sign appears for 30 secongs, and then stop sign shows and this is the end of boot...
    help people....

The OS X copy is damaged. If I were you, I would simply return it. You have 14 days since the purchase date to return the Mac and get another one for free, so I recommend you to do this.
If you want to try to solve the problem, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start up in Internet Recovery, and reinstall OS X

  • Upgrade options for first edition mac mini

    Hello
I have rescued an old mac mini, the thing had been abandoned and mistreated, but its in very good condition.
I am looking to give it a new leash of life but need some advise on which way to go.
The first problem is the original owner has lost the reinstall disk, it has panther on the mac mini but I want to give it a fresh start to get rid off the old user info, he has also installed lots of p2p software which I hate and cannot seem to get rid of it.
So, I want to install leopard, upgrade the memory from 256 to 1gb and buy the new apple keyboard and mouse.
Can I do this, or can I reinstall without the disk also might 256 be enough memory for leopard.
The mac mini only cost me £50 would it be worth it, I feel sorry for it.
Its not the Intel version its a PowerPC G4 model.

I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, Andy, but don't let that membership date for me fool you. I had somehow misplaced the info to log on, and, since I hadn't visited these forums for a while, Apple must have booted me off. I remember your valuable input to early Mac converts from the dreaded Pee Cee who bought the original Mini very well.
The distinction here, though, is one of semantics, and by serious I am referring to a combination of disk-intensive activities, coupled with algorithms in iTunes that have it going out to the 2 sites on the net that will retrieve cover art for personally-owned CDs and DVDs from the iTunes store, and the variety of track/CD data that CDDB provides.
I've tried every possible combination of alternatives to have the Mini behave like a well-disciplined child, here — everything from setting disk access preferences in the finder, to forbidding iTunes to do anything with a newly loaded disc until I tell it to do so. Nothing worked. I've erased the hard drive several times (first as a last resort) and reinstalled Leopard *by itself* and tested the system again to see if I could correct things. I even did this again last night after I had Tiger back up and running on the internal drive: I wiped the external clean, even zeroing out all the data on it, installed another fresh, clean copy of Leopard, requested the upgrade to 10.5.2, reset my iTunes account, then launched a new library. On the second attempt to load a disc into that new library I was back to the same problem that has been plaguing me for more than a month. Meanwhile, the Tiger install is operating perfectly — even willing to accept the massive amount of work that I had already completed so laboriously in Leopard.
I am not suggesting that you are incorrect, only that your own serious applications on a 1.25 GH G4 Mac Mini are not such that they will provoke this misbehavior. It may well be, too, that the unique architecture of this specific class of Mini is such that the problem cannot be replicated on any other PPC Mac that qualifies for the Leopard install. I'll also submit to noting that the Mail and Safari problems that persist on the number of G4-based Macs I support for myself and my clients may, in fact, be due to the shoddy practices of our ISP. No matter what I tell them, we still get unbelievably slow service for a cable connection (sometimes waiting as long as 3 minutes for this forum to appear, no matter which machine we are testing), and we still get a warning (on Leopard only) that the mail certificate does not match.

  • The first generation mac pro shuts down after start up suddenly

I have had mac pro since 2006 and have used it so many times without any problems starting up/booting successfully. Recently it was not booting well and i done pram clearance and worked for a while. Once after going into the desktop the screen just froze and i could hear a repeatitive clicking sound from the computer. I was able to shut down and did not use the computer for some time. i have tried to switch it on today and it goes through the normal dong sound and apple logo appears plus a grey bar underneath which fills to a bit and then there is a change in sound in the computer as if something coming to off and then there is the same repeated sound of faint clicking and the computer shuts down. can please anyone help me how to sort the problem out?

    Raj Karia wrote:
how do i carry this operation out?
Your machine info has changed from 10.6 to 10.3. No MBP ever shipped with 10.3, so I'm including directions for 10.6:
Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen select the language and click Continue> click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.
how do i open up the disk drive?
Not sure what you mean by this.

  • Audio in in G4 1st generation mac mini

    I've got a macmini 1st generation 1.45ghz 512Ram.
As you know it got no audio in.
I'm tryingo to use skype on it.
I've also got a DVCamcorder, wich I want to use as a webcam.
Fine, the cam works ok as a webcam, i use it on aMSN. I also use it on quicktime and it recognize the video and audio.
But, here comes the problem. Skype doesn't recognize the cam as an audio in source. The system preferences of OSX also don't recognized it. The audio can go in the mac, I know that because I use quicktime and shout videos with sound.
Someone told me to connect both firewire and usb connections of my cam to the mac. I've tried that, but no results.
Quicktime works fine, but system preferences and skype won't recognized it as an audio in.
    What should I do?

I recommend searching around and asking questions at Skype's website, and doing the same at the website of the company that manufactured your camera. You could also buy a USB headset or microphone that is compatible with Skype.
