First home sharing, now network problems

I can't seem to get Apple TV to work for me. I've followed the setup instructions and troubleshooting guide, but so far it has been a nightmare. I am connected via wireless router. When I first setup the Atv, the network worked fine, but I couldn't get home sharing to work. Home sharing was turned on both on my computer and on the Atv, but it did not appear in my devices in Itunes and would not register on the Atv. I checked my firewall and even temporarily disabled it to be sure, but no luck. After several reboots and a complete reinstall of Itunes 10.1, now the Atv will not even attempt to connect to the network. Even if I try to manually configure the ipaddress, it does not take on the apple TV. Tomorrow I will get another ethernet cable and try the wired approach, but seriously this thing should not be that hard to setup. I've tried everything in the user guide/troubleshooting tips and a few things that seemed to work for others in this forum (mostly pulling cables and restarting hardware/software), but I am out of ideas. Any suggestions??

Finally solved this issue for me! Turns out it was my Intego VirusBarrier X6. After my initial use of ATV2 and accessing the iTunes library on my iMac, VirusBarrier began blocking the IP address of the ATV on my iMac to prevent a perceived data flood. All I had to do was open the Anti-Vandal tab within VirusBarrier and identify the ATV's IP address as trusted. (The ATV IP address is found under Settings-->General-->Network.)

  • Screen sharing and home sharing makes network drop

Hi. I've upgraded to OS X Mavericks and I am having a weird network issue now. I use home sharing all the time to stream to my Apple TV and I use screensharing so I can connect from downstairs using my ipad or another computer. Every since the upgrade, If I am watching something on the Apple TV and then connect to my Macbook Pro, after a few seconds the Macbook Pro's network connection drops for a few seconds. The Apple TV loses connection to the Macbook Pro completely and my VNC app freezes for about 5-10 seconds. It eventually comes back, but this just happens over and over in a vicious cycle. Any ideas? I've tried running the Mavericks install again and fiddling with screensharing settings and VNC settings on the app, but it just seems like the two don't play well together on Mavericks. I never had any of these issues on Mountain Lion. My Macbook Pro is the late 2011 17 inch model with 16GB RAM. I also have a Belkin thunderbolt dock connected and a monitor connected to that via hdmi to mini display port. The disconnections happen whether I use the ethernet port on the Macbook or on the dock.

I've been having a similar issue since upgrading to Mavericks. I use screen sharing all the time to access my home computer from the road, but now it's hit or miss whether I can log in at all, and when I do, screen sharing eventually drops out after less than an hour.

  • Home sharing now not working with Apple TV 6.0.1/ iTunes 11.1.3.8

It was stupid of me to accept my Apple TV's notice of a new upgrade, which I accepted, and it is now version 6.0.1.  I upgraded my iTunes to 11.1.3.8.  Now my Apple TV doesn't recognize my Home Sharing with my computer.  I've reset the Apple TV to download the latest software again, and still nothing.  Before the update everything was fine.  This is not some Windows 8/firewall/network issue.  This is an Apple TV/iTunes/Home Share issue.  I have restarted Home Sharing multiple times in iTunes with my account without any success.  Please help.  Thanks.

Hi guys! I have just found a solution in a different thread - huge thanks to Toploader21120:
    1) open control panel.
    2)Choose Network and internet
3)Select the VIEW NETWORK STATUS TASKS under NETWORK and SHARING CENTER section
    4) Choose the active network connection. It is usually name " wireless Network Connection 1" or something similiar.
    5) Click the properties button
    6) If the Internet PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6) is checked, uncheck it, then click OK.
    7) Click CLOSE
    8) Restart iTunes and try to use the Home Sharing feature again.

  • Home Sharing on Windows problem

I'm using iTunes for Windows version 10.6.1 on 2 different PCs, I enabled Home Sharing both from the Advanced option panel and from the Preference>Sharing Panel with the same Apple ID and one PC (the laptop) can see the desktop sharing but not vice versa, moreover my iPhone can see both libraries and play from both, as well as the Remote App. My Lan is handled by an Airport Extreme + Airport Express and attached to the Express there are Airplay speakers who once again can't be seen from the desktop but work just fine from the laptop. The desktop is a clean Win7 Pro 64-bit install, while the laptop has the same OS but is about 2 years old. I tried turning Home Sharing on and off again, reinstalling iTunes and resetting my network but nothing worked. Anyone has a suggestion?

    Anyone?

  • Home sharing across networks

Is there any way to enable Home Sharing with a computer on an external network? I have a mac at work that I'd love to be able to synchronize with my home computer. It's already authorized. Do I need to setup port forwarding on my router? Will it even work?

  • Home Sharing PC/Mac Problem!

I want to copy my sister's music to my new computer. Both iTunes are up to date. I have a PC desktop (Windows 7, 64 bit) and a laptop of the same operating system. I'm copying music from my old Laptop and I type this, and it works fine. From my sister's Mac however, I can't. The option to import doesn't pop up. I can see her library just fine, and even play music from it. Since it's a Mac I can't go into normal library sharing and take what I need, and nor can I import it via Home Sharing. As for her, she can't even SEE my desktop, nor my laptop for that matter.
So far, I've ruled out the following problems.
-Home Sharing turned off (Everyone has their home sharing turned on.)
-Computer not authorized (My PC ISN'T authorized, but I can't even take stuff that have nothing to do with her iTunes account, such as stuff she got from a CD or online.)
-Already transfering music from somewhere else, my laptop (There isn't even a button, NOTHING to let me import it. Also, I can normally drag individual music files from my laptop to desktop regardless of if I'm importing from elsewhere or not. For my sister's Mac I can't even drag.)
Please help me out guys. I can't USB all the music; she needs all the available RAM she can get for her studies.

  • Home Sharing 4.3 problem

Hi, here is a strange issue after upgrading.
I'm not a mac newbie. 2 home sharing library, same music.
2 Mac an old MB intel core 2 anda a brand new MPB 17 (5 days of life).
Home sharing work perfectly on MB but not on MBP. I can see it, on my iPad, he also try to play something, but randomly jump from a song to another, without playing anything.
I try to create another library on MBP, and so another issue.
Till 5 or 10 song, ipad plays correctly in home sharing MBP library, but over same problem before.
After that he said: impossible to connect to multimedia library. And so I must restart all to try other solution.
Permission, firewall and other settings was controlled.
    Any other solution?

ok problem solved. Force itunes to rebuild database.
Move "iTunes Music Library.xml" to desktop and "itunes library" to trash.
Launch itunes and than import library.xml from desktop. All work perfectly.
Glad to be a "consumer betatester" for apple! ;p

  • Home Sharing- alleged firewall problem (-3259)

    Hi,
I've had this problem since I first tried to share any content between libraries with iTunes 9. In fact, I noticed the same problem when I was trying to stream content to my Apple TV a couple of weeks ago.
So I have an iMac, MacBook Pro and Airport Extreme (802.11n) Base Station. Both Macs have Snow Leopard installed with iTunes 9. None have any third-party firewall software installed nor do they have the firewall turned on in System Preferences.
Here's the problem: when I try to share content from library to library, it doesn't happen. Specifically, I can initialise a connection between both computers so the other computer's library shows up in the sidebar in iTunes, but that's as far as it gets. When I click on said library, there's a 2 minute wait before the following message is displayed.
"The shared library "Liam's Music" is not responding. (-3259) Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
I've tried absolutely everything (including a direct Ethernet connection between both Macs- same error message). Most recently, I even verified port 3689 is open using the Network Activity app. If anybody could help me here, I would really appreciate it. I have so much content I want to share to my family's iPods, etc.
    Liam.

I am having the same problem. Except I am sharing the library from a D-Link NAS. It worked perfectly before upgrading to iTunes 9. It's not a network or firewall problem. Nothing has changed there. The only change is iTunes 9. Any help is appreciated.
    T.

  • Sharing a network: problems with the settings

I'd tried to set up a small (home)network. But unfortunally something went wrong.
When I trie to put the setting right in preferences -> sharing, it's impossible to get the option ' filesharing' on and to put the option 'printersharing' off. They are blocked or something.
Is there anyone who knows what went wrong and how I can unblock the two options I'd descripe above?

    Hi Mariette
The first thing you should do is repair your system permissions. Open Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder), click on your hard drive and click Repair Permissions. This may correct some permissions errors on system files.
Let me know if that still doesn't work.

  • Sharing over network problems

hey everyone, trying to share all my music, movies, photos over a network from my imacC2D (running tiger) with my new mpb. I can only see the mbp's hard drive over the network and NOT the imac's which is where all the goods are at. here's what i did:
personal file sharing is enabled on both computers.
i click on Go > Connect to server > Browse, and from here is where it gets grey... I only see the mbp's harddrive (server) and not the imacs. What do i need to do on the imac in order to get its contents off it? I guess i could always use migration assistant but i dont have a firewire cable and im too lazy to go get one : P

  • Ipad home sharing problem

My Iphone connects to "home sharing without a problem - My Ipad will not connect - It keeps stating "Unable to connect to Home sharing" I've checked my password and user name - all correct - Can someone help?

    Hello James,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Home Sharing on your iPad.  I found an article that has steps for troubleshooting Home Sharing.  You can skip any of the steps that you have already done and the ones that do not relate to the iPad (like checking Firewall Settings).

If you are still getting the same error, "Unable to connect to Home Sharing," you can try restarting your iPad and then continue with resetting your iPad if the error persists:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:

  • ITunes 11 and no ability to drag and drop via home sharing...

I can find NO way to drag and drop playlists via home sharing now with Itunes 11...any help appreciated.

    PROBLEM SOLVED -
I found this on someone else's post on another website...
You have to sign into your home sharing with the SAME apple ID and password on each computer. It's common for people to want to put their individual/own ID and password on "their" computer, but that is not correct to fully authorize home share. Even on someone else's machine on your network, you still use the same apple ID and password for all computers you want to home share with. The other computer isn't getting access to your account or anything like that. You just have to use the same ID and password on each machine and that will enable home share among all home share computers that logged in with that ID and password. Otherwise you will just be able to see and stream the other computer's content, but you will not be able to copy it over or drag and drop.

  • Switched Cable Modem, Home Sharing Kaput (WiFi Sync Too)

I'm on Time Warner Cable in New York City. We had a Motorola Surfboard combined modem/router.
I was able to play movies from my MacBook Pro on my AppleTV through Home Sharing without a problem (and play music, view photos too). I also had no problem with WIFI sync for my iPhone and iPad.
Unfortunately that modem had a meltdown and they replaced it with an Arris combined modem/router/phone modem.
Now Home Sharing works extremely sporadically. I can't watch a movie for more than a few minutes before I lose the connection.
Turning the WIFI off on my MBP and then back on sometimes fixes the problems, sometimes not. But even when it fixes it, a few minutes later the connection is lost again.
My iPhone and iPad are on the same network of course and sometimes iTunes on my MBP notices them and I can sync over WIFI, and sometimes not. I'll shut the WIFI off and on, reboot, turn the iPad/iPhone off and on and nothing helps. It just picks up that the devices are sometimes and sometimes it just doesn't see them at all.
Each device (AppleTV, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone) works fine with our network, I'm able to do anything I want withough any issue (including on the AppleTV watching Netflix or movies through iTunes or listening to music through iTunes Match which I purchased recently).
But no matter what I do, including changing channels on the modem, turning it on then off, doing a total reset, erasing the network info from all devices and renaming the network and reconnecting, etc. Home Sharing is a total fail at this point.
Is there some setting in the modem configuration I need to change to fix this? Could it just be the modem itself?
I'm thinking I may have a TWC tech come with a new Motorola modem and see if it works again but any other ideas are appreciated.

  • Voice Memos will not play through Home Sharing on other devices.

I have synced my voice memos to my Apple library on my Mac Mini and can listen to them on that device with no problem. However, when I use my iPad or MacBook or Air to play the memos using my Home Sharing the voice memos will not play on the device. Sometimes a random song will start instead of the voice memo. I can play videos and music through Home Sharing with no problems, it seems to be only the voice memos that won't stream to the connected devices. Any help would be great (using Yosemite on devices).

I'm running 4.3.3 on mine and just played Joe Ely's latest album on my 1st generation Zeppelin. I do get the message about it not being compatible and possible noise but I dismiss that and play the music.
You may need to reset your Zeppelin (disconnect it from power, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in), Reset you iPhone (hold down the sleep and home buttons, ignore the red Off slider, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttones) or do both.
You may also need to update the firmware on your Zeppelin if you have not done so before now.

  • Home Sharing could not be activated because an error occurred (5506).

I am really unhappy about the mess that is appleid and the rigmarole I have had to go through to try and make anything work - which it doesn't from the latest error message to be emitted by iTunes for reasons that don't seem right.
I used to have a working home network which allowed me to share iTunes. I have an AppleTV 2, 2 airport expresses, mac book pro with Mac OSX. I also had Facetime working just before  Lion came along. Then everything went to ****. I should also mention I had a me.com id, which might  factor into this whole mess as well as an appleid that was tied to a develop id.
It was about this point that my appleid had to be changed to something that looked like an email address, but wasn't - why should the appleid have to look like an email address? But not be allowed to be one? It's just an identifier - it's NOT an email address.
Things seem to keep changing in a way that has no rhyme or reason about it - all hidden from view - slowly, gradually, insideously. Things behave slightly differently, but there is no way to really understand what specific configuration should work and what should not work. Yeah sure I have updated to every latest release of software, but things still don't work, they just don't work in different ways.
So every week or so I come back to trying to recover my once working array of apple gadgets, which are no longer really integrated.
Up until this morning I could actually send music to airport express and apple tv2 - today nothing - the devices did not show up in iTunes. So what changed? I presume iTunes got an update I did not notice this last week. Oh and airports have had issues for a while with dropping connections, especially if you have more than one (as I do). So I brought up the air port utilty and lo and behold there is a software update for it - installed that and it now appears in iTunes (again).
But - the appleTV2 has gone. So back to diagnostics. It seems that home sharing now is now tied to appleid, which I have had huge issues with trying to make work. I used to simply have a convention that the id I used for everything apple was the same, and this just seemed to work. Now it seems I need a real working appelid in order to just use home sharing.
I have never been able to make appleid work. It worked up to the point it had to be changed to be something that looked like an email adrress but wasn't.
I went through several iterations with it trying to get Facetime to work - all to no avail and bascially gave up on it completely. Untill I had to go back to it today to simply try and get home sharing of itunes to work with appletv.
So - I setup a nice new AppleId, created a nice new gmail address, and verified the email address from the Appleid site - so far so good. But of course they are not the same becuase the appleid is not an email adddress - nuts. Then I went back into iTunes and connected iTunes with the nice new AppleID. Then I tried to make home sharing work and got the message in the title of this email.
I have read other posts about this subject that seem to suggest that what I have done should make it work - it doesn't.
And I have not even tried to make Facetime work (again) and iCloud was hopeless when I tried it last - more error messages that did not makes sense despite having done everything "right."
I work with software everyday. Maybe I am just a special case who has had far too many touch points with apple for them to be able to consolidate my relationships with them into a single "appleid" - if this is indeed what is going on here - is it? please tell me.
Apple, I just want to know where you are going with appleid? It seems like someone is making up the rules as they go along and the implementation is piecemeal and haphazard. Every development group is interpreting it in its own way and is not clued in to the vision - if there is one.
I just want all my apple devices and software to work together and to not have to give up my identity to you to make this happen. It's totally unfair to have to provide you with all my personal details (and my credit card) on a web site to just make a few devices work together.
As an appendix to this rant - I tried to ressurect my oringinal attempt at converting my appleid to a pseudo email address - however this ended up in a blind alley because of the need to verify email addresses and gmail's ability to associate multiple email addresses and confabulate certain special characters like "." and "_". The original appleid with some associated email address seems to still be active, however if I try to recover the password by email I never receive it. So Apple (and google) why can't you read the IETF spec for email addresses and implemnted it properly and consistently if you are going to use them for identifiers (a horrible bad idea if youask me).
