First impressions (mixed bag)

My first impressions after having BT Infinity installed on Friday are a mixed bag. Speed tests extremely good, 76Mb down/ 18Mb up, pretty maxed out on a short line (cab < 300 metres). However, my gripes.....
P2P is heavily shaped. No problem, afterall I was on BT ADSL and used to traffic shaping being lifted in early hours of the morning to do download. However, uploads are permently 24/7 throttled to 1Mb, which I do not think it acceptable.
I run an FTP server and regularly upload to it. FTP port is permentaly throtlled to 8Mb upload. I know this is still fast but I think to artificially slow FTP upload down 24/7 is again unacceptable.
Home hub 3 is rubbish and a security risk. It permently keeps port 161 open (as tested by test my shields) and port forwarding seems broken. I thought I had a faulty one but after doing some research it seems that these are common issues!
Needless to say initially impressed, but now I'm more annoyed with the service. Like car with a top speed of 150MPH but can never do more than 60MPH, even on a empty road!

Thanks for your advice guys. I already subscribe to SwissVPN as I have always done on ADSL to bypass traffic shaping, and it used to max out my 4Mb connection but that seems capped too at 8Mb down and about 1Mb up. I pay about £6 a month.
Can you recommened another VPN provider that can provide higher speeds than this? I wouldn't mind a US VPN as I guess this would allow to access media content in the US (hulu etc) but would really prefer highest speed VPN possible for under £10 a month? What VPN speeds to you get using StrongVPN?
A basic feature such as port forwarding I would expect on the cheapest of routers. What the point in a router if it can't route? This must be causing BT support calls that aren't really needed if router worked as intended.

  • First 'impression' of Safari 3.0 Beta in the first 5 minuites of use.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium and just downloaded Safari 3.0 for Windows Public Beta (Not included Quicktime)
    The installation is processed smoothly.
I used it 5 minuites and my first impression is nothing but BUGs BUGs BUGs.
    Alway Crash:
    1. When click anything concerning Bookmarks, Safari crashes. (In other word, cannot use Bookmarks.)
    2. When fill in any form, Safari crashes.
    3. When access any pages with Javascript, Safari crashes.
    Sometime Crash:
    1. When access some pages, Safari randomly crashes. Ordinary pages such as this website itself. The symtom is both CPU core work reach 100% and needed to restart computer.
    2. Randomly show message like "file not found, need reinstall." in any page, of course, even this page.
    Bugs:
    1. Cannot click on the button on the taskbar to minimize.
    2. When minimize and restore, the Safari window going in restore down state.
    3. Memory leak as I monitering RAM usage: increases more than 100MB when open Safari.
    4. Font smoothing shows almost illegible.
    Let down function:
    1. Safari 3.0 for Windows Public Beta is the slowest web browser among all of browsers in my notebook. (IE7, Firefox, Opera, Cameleon Browser.)
STOP! saying "This is just a BETA!".
I love to test beta software and report bugs. I'm not a techical geeks so my testing method is to use them just as I always use in everyday life. No tweak or special use I squeesh to the program. I understand the BETA is not FINAL and of course, have more bugs than FINAL.
But this is not what I call bugs. I call "cannot be used."
How can you guy call this "PUBLIC" Beta? Have your programmer even see it in action in Windows before release to public?
This application is the second Apple application I experienced. (The first is iTunes.) It totally let me down because when compare with Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1 I tested last year, Safari 3.0 Public Beta is not in my sight.
How can you apply guy convince me that Apple is better than Microsoft since I compare just an essential small program and found no pros, even both are in beta state?
Hope to see Beta 2 with no major crash in the first 5 minuites usage.

Downgrading via Archive and install is notoriously unreliable. It is much safer to simply retrieve your backup you made before you installed the update after an erase and install. Of course you make at least two backups. Selective file recovery may be in order, such as found in migrating from PowerPC to Intel Macs:

  • ITunes 11.0 First Impressions

    1. My first impression of the user interface is that it's "square" and "flat".
Esthetically I don't see it as an improvement. To the contrary, I think
       the former interface is nicer.
    2. After starting iTunes 11.0 it sat there for 1/2 an hour with the message
"Sending Information to Apple", then a dialog box displayed with:
We cannot complete your iTunes Store request
       An unknown error occurred (4002)
Note that three subsequent attempts resulted in the same iTunes match error.
    3. Could not find a way to change the BRIGHT WHITE background.  I hate the white
background for various reasons.  I'm sure many other customers preferred the dark
        background as well.
    4. Tried syncing my iPhone and had to cancel.  It was copying 49 apps, I believe
some of these were from my iPad.  Had to then restart iTunes.
    5. Movies in grid view have large gaps in between the rows of movies.
It is UGLY!  Is it just me, or do others have these huge gaps?
    6. Looking at my music, I see no way to view the songs in a list view.
Where are the convenient buttons which quickly allowed changing views?
Now there is just unused space where they used to be.  And all of
the menu items under View -> Column Browser are disabled.
       Why???
    7. Hey, at least they brought back color icons, which Apple deemed that
no one liked!  (That was sarcasm).
Overall I am extremely dissapointed with this update, and it has me wondering how the
most valuable company in the world could release something that looks more at home
    on a Linux desktop.

It's terrible. There is no symmetry in the views anymore. It is so bad, that it will take a lot of testing for me to figure out what is wrong with it. The only view that allows different views is the playlist view. I can't get an "artist list" for all my music. I can only get it for the currently selected playlist. I suppose I could make a playlist with all music. Where did sort by album by artist/year go? That's the view I used the most. I found it in the songs view. But there I can't see the album covers. It's so unsymmetrical now. Where did the status bar go that told me how many songs I selected and what the total play time is? I don't know if all my songs are there. The albums view and the videos views are worthless if you have 15,000 songs and videos. They just rearranged things. There's nothing new. There are things missing. The thing that needed fixing was synchronization. All that should be removed from iTunes, but they didn't make any changes to that. Can I go back to iTunes 10?

    2.         Whenever Iturn on the computer, a new blank document window in MS Word 2011 appears.  I do not have this listed in the login items.

Help with any of these will be appreciated.

    1.         I have a security app on my computer, Flashbrief. I have it checked in the hide column but whenever I turn on the computerit appears in the top menu line.
I've never heard of this software, and cannot find any reference to it online, which is a bit concerning.  What is it supposed to do?  There really isn't much need for security software on a Mac.
    2.         Whenever Iturn on the computer, a new blank document window in MS Word 2011 appears.  I do not have this listed in the login items.
In Mac OS X 10.7, any applications left open when you shut down or restart are re-opened at startup, and any documents left open in an app when you quit are re-opened when you launch them again.  The former can be controlled by unchecking the box in the restart/shutdown alert:
You will need to do this each time you shut down or restart, it won't remember that setting.
The latter can be deactivated by unchecking the box in System Preferences -> General:
    3.         I have a current model of Apple wireless mouse. It keeps getting stuck in text or e-mails and I have to somehowotherwise move the cursor to break it free.
That does not sound normal, but I don't use a mouse with my MBP, so I can't provide a solution, other than to try replacing the batteries in the mouse.

  • CS-4 First Impressions

First impressions. I know, quite out of date but with all the apparent problems...
    System is a Lenovo 3000 series AMD 64x2 3800+
    Power supply upgraded
Memory 2 gig Crucial (maximum for the MB)
Video card is Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS - Latest drivers. Not on the supported list.
    Display is 1280 x 1024.
Windows XP Home SP-3, Net Framework 3.5 SP 1, and other Forum recommended updates that aren't handled by Windows Update.
    1.05 TB in three drives. (1 K=1024)
Working with a 6144x4111 pixel 16 bit ProPhoto digital photograph:
As installed, in the trial download, GUI settings, Photoshop swap file is NOT on the system drive.
The start up time is about the same as with CS-3. Faster than CS.
Top menu bar text is rough and appears broken until I put the curser over the text. Then it clears up.
Click & drag zoom works like a charm.
"Toss" has a quarter to half second delay before the image moves.
Lag behind brush is quite noticeable even when zoomed in.
Brush border is rough & jagged. An indicator that the brush smoothness slider is set to full smooth?
I saw no delay with typing. (I have to look at the keys and when I looked up after the last letter it was there and sharp.)
A new learning curve for the palates IS going to need to be climbed. Or is there a "Look like CS, CS2, CS3" toggle somewhere? (NOTE the "First Impressions" above!)
Now for the interesting part. This test showed the same results as a test, same file but reduced to 3074 pixels width and in 8-bit color. I was doing a "see if file size makes a difference" test.
There was no difference in behavior with the system running "free" or with ZoneAlarm Pro and BitDefender running in the background. I have BitDefender set to NOT load on computer boot.
With the stock Open GL settings and a below grade video card, the brief test gave better than expected results with the main down grade being brush lag.
Just my observations with a video card that may be pushed beyond what can be reasonably expected of it and settings not tuned as per recommendations here.
One thing that I haven't seen mentioned before is the new ability to re-tune the settings in adjustment layers. There have been many times I would have wanted that ability in the past.
    Bill

let me make sure I get this; the phone, it is a phone after all, does not have good signal, and it will not pair properly with bluetooth, but you are saying 'everything else is fine'!!!!!!! Why don't you return it, and go get yourself an itouch? You will have all the apps, etc. Then get a mifi from sprint/verizon and you are all set. Then, go get yourself a proper phone with a decent carrier and you will be all set.

  • First impressions -Bad Start

Took me some time to get all the various connections sorted. Initial feeling is that the freeview picture isn't as good as my old box. Some of the channels(including BBC1)have black lines around the edge which weren't there before. When I had a quick look at the on demand content had to say I was a bit disappointed. Thought I'd try it out this evenoing only to get a message saying it was currently unavailable, please try later. I couldn't access any of the menu items - I think I got error 400 - and then to add insult to injury I couldn't even get the Freeview channels , just got a BT screen saying 'starting up' or something similar. So, only analogue to fall back on. Lucky we haven't had the switch off yet. First impressions, not good.

The black lines are displayed while a 4:3 aspect programme is showing in order to display it correctly. If you'd rather have it distorted, but fill the screen then you can use the shortcut menu to stretch. If I remember rightly you may have to keep setting that, can't remember as I never use it myself.
Make sure that the box is successfully connected to the internet through the hub as it won't be able to start without chatting to the server.

  • First impressions of the 3.0 update from a 1st gen iPhone user

MIne is a 1st gen iPhone purchased opening day 2 years ago and I had a brief period of non working stocks and weather apps that are now fine (apparently an issue that was widespread today across the diff iPhones). After that everything is business as usual. I did reset my settings after the install and restore my iphone with a current back up as a precaution and so far works great.
First impressions: The camera is a little snappier and sharper in photo taking.
    Copy and paste: RAD!!!
Voice memos: Can send instantly via e-mail MY LADY LIKES....KINDA KINKY!!!
Find my phone: Would be cooler with GPS the 1st gen won't help you find exactly where it is.
Spotlight: very functional and useful for a phone packed with stuff...like mine.
Landscape keyboard: nice but should have been there 1st time out.
Overall it's the kind of update that a moderately smart user that can RTFM will install and enjoy. If you are an idiot who tries to install it from a buddies computer or likes to unplug things in midstream you won't like it, because your phone will be useless until you do it properly and follow the simple steps.

    hi,
we were trying an export from one database to another- and ran into problems- portal created a package under the portal30 schema (dbms_lob- a copy of which originally exists under the sys schema) that was previously not there.
so we decided to uninstall the portal and the sso schemas. we carried out this step:
    1) Drop the Portal, SSO, and their respective _public DB users cascade.
but the portal30 schema will not allow us to drop the dbms_lob package that it created (which incidentally compiles with an invalid package body)
it continues to give the following error message:
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [16201], [], [], [], [], [], [], []
is there any way to complete the unistallation of portal without unistalling the entire database?
    thanks for any help.

  • First impressions of the iPad

I played with an iPad yesterday at our local Apple Store, and my first impressions are very positive. I plan to buy one when the 3G models come out in a few weeks.
The only major disappointment for me is that the iPad OS does not support printing to local networked or shared printers. Does anyone know of a good 3rd party solution for this?
    Thanks,
    -AstraPoint

    First impressions of the iPad
I'm reasonably satisfied. iPad was purchased primarily as a nightstand entertainment device for the bedroom. I use it for reading, streaming of netflix video, playback of synched TV content, and/or playing music before going to sleep at night. (Wife likes to watch TV but I usually prefer reading a chapter or two or catching up on Lost which I never watched on TV.) And, while I don't really plan to use it for and serious productive/creative work, I did invest in the iWork apps for presentations at computer group meeting and/or the creation of PDF files when away from home and visiting relatives. (Plan to take it with me today when about 15 relatives all gather for our annual Easter Meal at a local restaurant.) In any case, I am happy with my purchase.

  • Y510, Windows 7 first impressions

Well I got bored and curious so I put Windows 7 build 7000 on my trusty 510 and figured I would share the results with everyone. I searched and I found someone posting Win7 on an S10 but nothing on Y510 or similar.
So far here is what I have found:
    1. It recognizes all 5 speakers but it sees them as separate pairs so as of now I can choose which set to use (it sees the sub as stereo, not sure I understand that one...) but I can't seem to get it to play through all of them. It does however fully support the Spdif which was a nice surprise.
    2. I don't have a program that uses the webcam so I really have not played with it, and obviously it doesn't have veriface.
    3. The display driver out of the box seems great, I have 1200x800, out of the box and it gives me full aero.
    4. The softkeys are a mixed bag. With just installing Windows: Mute works. The application launcher program is not there, the dolby button does nothing, the play control keys won't work with wmp have not tried them with any other programs yet. the volume does work, the EQ settings don't. The Novo button appears to do nothing. Another thing I did notice is the volume control is considerably more sensitive then in vista, hitting it once used to do 10% or something like that now it does like 1 or 2% at a time, holding it still works.
    5. Driver attempts: Intel video driver for vista looks for service pack, does not find. Fail...
Hi Def audio drivers: error saying driver not found. Fail...
ATK Hotkey: installs, says all is well, does absolutely nothing. Fail...
There is a download for the lenovo batt. Manager, but I am very fond of the one that came with Windows 7 so I don't care to try.
    6. So here are my thoughts on the beta so far:
Windows 7 loads quick and the install was nice. I was surprised how much worked out of the box and how few things need drivers to work, but on the otherside the things that do have had a 0 percent success rate so hopefully in the future that will improve. It is noticeably lighter and quicker then Vista which is quite a compliment considering I liked Vista a lot. It's even prettier then it was and on average it uses at least 300 megs of RAM less. The options seem more coherent then Vista I have had little to no trouble changing settings. The new start bar is amazing. It is far more intuitive then anything I have used before. Programs collapse into the quickstart link if there is one, and there are subtle visual hits as to how many of that program or folder are open. The Aero tweaks are cool, and range from neat but mostly pointless (shake) to some really useful features (When you drag a window to the top it shows an outline of it maximized and if you let go it maximizes, and if you drag to the left or right it shadows half the screen. Perfect for when you need windows side by side).
It is very polished for being beta and fun to play with but with the number of features that aren't working on the Y510 are a deal breaker. If you try on a new partition like I did feel free to leave some feedback and let me know if you had anything different happen, but I would say NOT worth overwriting Vista and trying to use as a main OS.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask and I'll see what I can find out for ya.

I've installed Windows 7 x86 on my Y510, and all the drivers from lenovo seems to be working fine (Audio, nVidia driver, hotkeys, ACPI Power, etc)
One thing that's stopped working in 7 is the music hotkey and the dolby hotkey.
    other than that, it's perfect.
and I was quite surprised with the performance rating, the gaming graphic drops to 4.5 from 5.4, the HDD drops from 5.2 to 3.0.
oh but tmy Procesor (T8300) got 5.8 (previously 5.3 on Vista)
EDIT : I just tried Veriface, and IT'S WORKING

  • Just took delivery of my 2.8GHz MacBook Pro - first impressions...

Well, my very first impression was - WHO THE HECK OPENED MY BOX? It was shipped in its original packaging, which was put into a brown shipping box. As I was opening the brown box, it was very clear to me that someone opened it and re-taped it. The same was true for the Apple box. The original clear tape was cut opened and another clear strip was placed over it. I did not have anything custom configured/installed, so there is no reason any of the boxes should have been opened. My only other guess is that customs opened it?? Has anyone else experienced this?
The next thing I noticed was the battery cover. When closed and latched, it shifts up and down when shifted up and down. In other words, it's not seated solidly.... it's loose. Appears to be a flaw to me. Only wondering if it's just a flaw on my unit or if it's affecting others. Please chime in.
Last thing I feel like I should note is internet connectivity. I have a wireless router. Both my other desktop (PM MDD G4) and laptop (PB G4) are wifi. I configured my new MacBook Pro to connect to the wireless router and it all connected as seemless as could be, as expected. I also noted that the wireless reception was exceptional! My wireless router is in the living room and when in the back room of the house, my Powerbook G4 gets 2 bars and can be sporadic. This new MacBook Pro is great as it has all bars lit everywhere in the house and is always consistent! Improvement on wifi pickup! Fantastic.
That being said, I did run into the problem of losing connectivity even with the bars all lit. I checked the network config and for some very odd reason, my IP kept switching from 192.168.x.x to 169.x.x.x. After restarting both my cable modem and wireless router, it fixed itself. After 10 minutes though, it returned to the screwed up config! I reset both router and cable modem again and it was fine for another few minutes and then BACK TO the bogus config Weird! After wrestling with it for about an hour I determined that I should take it into the Apple Store and let them see what's going on... but it began working fine for the rest of the evening with no problem. I still think I'll take it in just to see if others have experienced it. Please, let me know if anyone here has experienced it.
Otherwise, my first evening with it was not too bad. I will report my good and bad (hopefully no bad) findings as they come!
    Thanks!

Thank you all for your responses. I have made arrangements with Apple to take it back and send me a new one. Gotta mention that Apple customer service was very polite, but wow, I was put on hold VERY frequently and for VERY, VERY long periods of time! I'm talking like 10 to 15 minutes at a time!! And one time I was put on hold and after about 10 minutes the call was dropped and when I called back, all of the arrangements that were supposedly made for me were NOT even documented by the person who was helping me and so there was no record of the fact that I even called at all, which in turn rendered all that time I was on with them and on hold, USELESS! I had to restate the entire issue and start from scratch!! And I was promptly put on hold after doing so... AGAIN! And again! And AGAIN!! ...sigh. Then finally I was told that I would receive an e-mail from Apple tonight, explaining the steps I must follow to get my replacement MacBook Pro. It is almost 6 hours later and I have not received the e-mail. This makes me think that tomorrow, I am going to have to call them AGAIN (GASP!!!) and try to figure out why the e-mail was not sent. Oh brother!! The next worse thing they could tell me is that I have to send the MacBook Pro back to them and they will not send out the new one to me until they receive it! I hope they don't do that! ...sigh. : (

  • Mixed Bag

I joined BT Broadband 5 weeks ago and it has been a mixed bag.  Some total confusion over my package, speeds mainly around 16mbps which is good, but sometimes only 3mbps which is terrible.  However today I received a Welcome to BT message saying my Broadband was ready followed by another message as a MAC reminder, telling me I have 25 days to give BT my MAC in order to complete my order?!!  It looks like they have started my order process all over again.  I wonder what would happen if I took no action, perhaps after 25 days BT tell me I can not continue my order and I will be free to move elsewhere.  Not really of course as I am already being billed for my Broadband and Calls.  Strange situation.

If you would like someone to double check for you, then
If you would like to contact one of the UK based BT Care Team who moderate this forum, they will be able to help you.
They can be contacted using this link BT Care Team
They normally respond by phone or e-mail, within three working days, however you should get an immediate confirmation, with a tracking number.

  • HT5610 How can You authorise your Windows Vista computer??? I do not get this drop down menu nowI cannot get this here, have been trying for hours, why is this so uncooperative? My first impression of I tunes is not so good after that.

How can you authorise your windows vista computer to play stuff you downloaded from itunes???  I cannot get this drop down menu shown on your support pages whatever I do.    I have been trying for ages.  This is not a good first impression.

    Authorize a Mac or PC
Review the following before you authorize a computer:
You can authorize up to five computers with your Apple ID.
You must authorize your computer to download past purchases, use Home Sharing, or use the Automatic Downloads setting.
You can play unprotected music that's in the AAC file format without authorizing your computer. This includes iTunes Plus tracks and content  from sources other than the iTunes Store, like your audio CDs.
To authorize a computer, follow these steps:
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Authorize This Computer from the menu bar.
You may need to show the menu bar to see this option in Windows.     In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.
Enter your Apple ID and click Authorize.
If your Apple ID uses an expired MobileMe account, you can still authorize your computer.
In some cases, iTunes may ask you to authorize the computer again. iTunes should use the same authorization as before if the computer is in your  list of authorized computers.
Learn what to do if iTunes repeatedly asks you to authorize when you try to play your content.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1420
Note : If you are Unable to see the Store Tab on your iTunes then click anywhere on your iTunes and press
Ctrl + B key on your keyboard once and you should be able to see the Store tab in your iTunes.

  • Galaxy S6 - First impressions.

I upgraded my Sim only deal to refresh deal and got myself a non edge version of the Galaxy S6 in the process - I am still playing with it but here are my first impressions. Build quality is excellent (even the packaging is very well made!), the phone feels very solid and very well made - I was worried that the glass back would make the phone 'slippery' in the hand, but the opposite seems to be the case - the phone fits very well in the hand and feels safe. The buttons are very well placed and the seperate volume buttons seem better than the rocker type. The phone did get quite warm during the initial setup and update phase, I put this down to a lot of updates and wifi activity - no sign of this since. The phone responds very quickly and is very smooth - I don't notice any lag at all. One thing I do find myself doing on this phone is catching the capactive buttons by accident, I am putting this down to me just getting used to a larger phone. Camera - I am no photographer but the camera is excellent, taking very good pictures. I took the dog out last night and took some photos see how it worked in low light and I was very impressed. Video is equally impressive and the Ultra HD video is simply excellent quality - one issue here is while the UHD video plays ok on the phone, my laptop is having issues playing the video without it breaking up - I am assuming this is a media player issue. I will try the UHD playback on the TV later to see how this works. Call quality seems much better than my A3 - and texts seem to send a lot quicker, I am assuming this is just because of the extra grunt of the S6. It came with Lollipop 5.0.2 and asked to do an update, which I did and it updated to 5.0.2! It appears O2 have rolled back the 5.1.1 update I was expecting it to update to, no doubt this will be addressed in time. Lollipop - this is the first time I have used this on a phone, and it seems pretty good - I especially the quick camera or dialer launch from the lock screen - from the lock screen simply drap the camera icon and the camera launches pretty much instantly, same for the dialer. I also like the improved notifications and the ability to do a quick reply to a text directly from the notification. It comes with a adaptive fast charger, and indeed does charge fast - while charging there is a notification of how long left - as a bit of a test today I was on about 50% and plugged it into a normal charger, it told me three and half hours to charge, when plugged into the fast charger it the notification said 48 mins! It appears you can get a full charge in about an hour and ten mins - impressive. Screen - it has to been seen to believed - I would say this is the best screen I have ever seen on a smartphone, it will be interesting to put it side by side with my friends Note 3 for comparison. One last thing that impressed me was the bundled earphones - they sound quite impressive! I will do a fuller review once I've used it for a few days but my initial opinion - everything I expected it would be, and then some!

I really like your first impressions ! Not too technical, everybody can understand it (even me!) and addressing details that are decisive for a lot of people when choosing a new mobile.I can tell that you have put "heart" in this review/first impressions....I can imagine you having like a "little" list, in your head,of things you are curious to know about the phone and trying them one by one... well done! I find it truly useful!

  • Got my mac mini intel singel core yesterday!! first impressions !

hi to all, yesterday i got my mac mini singel core 1,50 GHz 512 ram 60 s-ata, here are my first impressions:
of course it looks like the same;ir-sensor for the frontrow remote control is at the right side, inside the drive slot (very nice solution). It boots up faster than my old mac mini G4 1,25 Ghz 1GB ram.first of all i did a xbench test, here are my results:old mac mini g4 1,25 1 Gb ram xbench points=36,37; new mac mini intel single core xbench points=63,37 !!!Very nice and smooth system import from the old ppc os x was no problem using firewire. virtual pc 7 does not work any more.
overall rating after 1 day, very good outstanding product
    greetings tobias

I also got the Core Solo and so far am very much satisfied with it. One of my highest Xbench scores was 65.40, twice as fast the score of the lowerend G4 Mac Mini. The feel of the system's respondsiveness is certainly on par with other Intel based Macs I tried at the local Apple stores. Boot time is under 30 seconds most of the time. One weird thing I noticed is that when open " About This Mac", the system identifies the processor as a 1.5GHz Intel Core Duo. However, System Profiler says it's a Core Solo. Well, I will only open "About This Mac" from now on
To answer your question, Tobias, 720p plays awesome but 1080p not looking good. The new graphic eventhough integrated is still an improvement over the graphic of the old model. Why? It supports Core Image and you get all the nice effects in Dashboard, also HD contents play much better obviously.
512MB of RAM is not enough. I'm glad that I didn't buy the Core Duo because with that $200 in difference, I can up the fund to buy a pair of 1GB DDR2 memory and a 7200RPM hard drive for upgrades. The hard drive on the Mac Mini has always been a weak link. SATA is supposed to be faster than the old IDE ATA, but from what I've seen so far, it's pretty much the same.

  • Merry Christmas, My "New" PB, First Impressions...

My first post and first Mac:
Not new to computers, but new to Macs. As a rule, I try to help other users as at least as much as the help I receive. That won't be the case on this forum, as I'm a total Mac noob. Perhaps, as time passes, I'll be able to field simple questions, but that may take a while.
This Christmas we replaced our son's two year old PB with an MBP. We got the hand-me-down. We wouldn't even own a Mac, except it's required by his college for digital design. This is also my first notebook, so I guess many issues are unique to that fact.
After one day of ownership, I've had the following observations:
    1. During file transfer over airport, application "locked up", or was "unresponsive". My son used the equivalent of the Windows Task Manager to close it.
    2. iTunes was unusable because, "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." Resolved by changing properties of... something, didn't get the full story yet, but it has to do with changing administrator of the computer.
    3. Bluetooth does not have A2DP protocol... bummer!
    4. Saw the DVD unable to be ejected from his MBP during OS installation. Sheesh!
Well, that's it so far. I will be back with questions, because he'll be going back to school in a couple weeks. I generally find answers via Google, but sometimes that's not enough. My first impressions are a little disappointing, but maybe that's because I've heard too much hype, such as "It Just Works", and "Switch to a Mac and You'll Never Go Back". I own it, now I'm gonna use it by hook or by crook!

One other point I forgot to mention was regarding the rubber feet on the bottom. One was lost, so my son removed a second in order for it to sit level. Online, I found the price of replacements at $20.00! I'm using a couple old mouse feet in the mean time, but is there not an aftermarket source for such items at a reasonable price?
Probably not, but who cares? If you can let go of having to have the exact size, thickness, and material, you can do what I've done for years: Go to your neighborhood hardware store or drugstore and pick up a $1 sheet of little self-adhesive rubber feet. There are many kinds, of course, mostly hovering around one dollar for more than you'll ever need. The ones I picked are clear, so no one notices they don't quite match, and thicker, so they absorb shock better and raise the back another millimeter or two for better bottom ventilation, and they "grab" better so the laptop no longer slides around with a slight nudge. These are actually better than the original equipment feet.

...I can't wait to see what iTunes does with this 4GB of MP3's.
My PowerBook G4 has 13.29GB of music in iTunes, doesn't seem to be any problem. On the Mac Pro I've got 30GB of audio and video.
