First iPhone- dummy question

OK, how does on *remove an item from the Dock and replace it with another one?*
I tried dragging it off, clicking on it, double-clicking, poofing, and "settings".
I'd like to take Safari (won't be doing a lot of surfing from the phone) off the Dock and replace it with SMS. Every other feature seems intuitive and easy but this one is fighting me tooth & claw, hoof-in-mouth... the phone is laughing at me I tell you, I can hear it!!

I wondered why the apps jiggled every now and then. I thought I did something wrong, like when the password screen in OS X shakes its head no with an incorrect login. Good to know what that's about

Got an iPhone 5s from Sprint. It has iOS 7. I made the mistake of having it plugged in while it was on WiFi and it downloaded 8 but we didn't install it. Don't remember if it was 8 or the 8.0.1. Anyway the d/l took up 4gb out of the 12 that was available. I just noticed that I have 12gb back and available and 8 is no longer showing anywhere. I read that Apple recalled the update? Is that what happened to me since I hadn't installed it? Did they actually delete it from my iPhone? Now there's a message saying to get 8.0.2 but it says Download and Install not just install. If I never do it will the flag eventually go away?

Yes. It is possible. Just sign in to your Apple ID on both of your iPhones in the App Store.

Two questions: getting first iPhone & deleting old iPhone backups?

Here's the deal.
My neighbor has 'paid' for his old iPhone 4 through AT&T and is getting a new one. He's going to give me his old one. It will be my first smartphone (and, naturally, my first iPhone). I've backed it up for him using my computer before and there are a bunch of his apps in iTunes which I would like to remove. So my first question is, "how do I get rid of that backup"?
I've downloaded the iPhone 4 manual with iOS 4.x (which he has running) and I think I know how to go about updating and resetting the phone. After I get it updated to iOS 6.x, I'll be going to the AT&T store and finding a good (cheap!) plan that fits my lifestyle.
Any help or suggestions?

Then set things up using YOUR Apple ID. Any old backups, delete: iTunes>Preferences>Devices. Also delete any & all content, in your library, obtained with his ID.

i need the the iPhone to do a few things and other than that its just a paper weight to me.
How loud is the iPhones's alarm clock?
Can iPhone's calendar be synced with iCal? How? (there is alarms right?)
also, i need it to make phone calls, blah blah blah,,,, and play music and some games.
but most importantly it must tether with iCal on my vintage PowerBook. will I have problems?

Once again why would i want to? all mt SMS's are private conversations if i wanted to let someone else know the details of a message i would want to re-word it and re-send it anyway so it was coming from me
Not saying that people don't want these things obviously they do otherwise they wouldn't be contained in the 3.0 update, but i bought the iPhone knowing full well what it could and couldn't (like tethering and turn by turn i really wanted those but still wasn't enough of a deal breaker and there's a provision for them now in 3.0 anyway) doesn't mean it's a bad phone and everyone's cicumstances are different anyway.

I have my first iPhone (5c) and I have an iPod classic 160GB. Can I sync poth with iTunes on my PC?

I have lost some podcasts. I have a new (my first) iPhone and I want to sync it and my classic iPod with iTunes on my PC. Can this be done and if not, how can I recover my lost podcasts? They are no longer available for free as I first got them through subscriptions.

Second question: why are podcasts only available for so short a time now on iTunes Store and on sites like NPR?

I lost maybe a dozen podcasts from multiple podcast collections on iTunes. They now have little i's on them indicating they cannot be found. I have only 1 Apple ID. I use it on iTunes and on my iPhone. Since I sync'd my iPhone with iTunes for podcasts, a bunch of them have the little i's. And some seem to be missing from my iPod too, but I can't vouch for them being thre before the sync between iTunes and the iPhone.
These podcasts were not purchased, they were subscribed to and they were free. Now that they are missing, it will cost me .99 each to replace them and that isn't going to happen, but I'd like to get them back.

I'm trying to create my first iPhone App, do I start with Interface Builder or Xcode first? And how do I link the two together?

It's not really that simple -- you'll be working with both. Interface Builder is used to design the GUI (graphical user interface, which consists of the windows and buttons and text fields and so forth, the parts of the application that your user interacts with). Xcode, on the other hand, is used to write the code that tells that GUI what it's supposed to do, and how to do it. So, to answer your question as best I can -- generally, I would imagine you would want to start by creating the basic form of your GUI in Interface Builder and then start coding where appropriate in Xcode, then you'll move back and forth between the two (Xcode and Interface Builder) as needed.
If you're new to programming and want to start with iPhone apps, I recommend picking up a book on the topic (Apress publishing has a book called "Beginning iPhone 3 Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK" that is a good one, and don't forget to take advantage of Apple's iOS Dev Center, which has lots of good documentation on most any topic that will be helpful in supplementing the information in the book you buy -- click [here|http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action] to go there).
Keep in mind, however, that trying to learn to program iPhone apps will be difficult (to say the least) if you don't already know Objective-C, and the Apress book I recommended above will not be easy to follow without understanding Objective-C first. Objective-C an object-oriented extension of C, and it is the programming language that is used to develop iOS apps (apps for the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad). I would definitely recommend learning Objective-C on the Mac before jumping in to iPhone development in specific. Apress has another book called "Learn Objective-C on the Mac" that I would recommend for this.
Furthermore, since Objective-C is an extension of C, you won't have an easy time learning it without a prior understanding of the C programming language. Again, Apress has a book for this, called "Learn C on the Mac."
Put simply, learning to program for the iPhone is not something that comes overnight -- it's a step-by-step process that takes patience, and you have to be willing to go through these steps if you want to learn to program properly for the iPhone.
Step 1 -- learn the C programming language
Step 2 -- learn the Objective-C programming language
Step 3 -- apply your knowledge to developing for iOS (iPhone's operating system) with the Cocoa Touch framework
Anyways, that's just my advice -- I definitely recommend taking the time to do it right and not jumping straight into the deep end, but in the end only you know what works best for you. Also, like I said, I definitely think investing in a book on the subject is worth the time and money, so let me know if you want any other recommendations for books beyond the ones listed above.

Name of the first iPhone

I've gotten two answers and I'm really tired of searching for the true answer so, I came here and I would hope to think the one I get here is right: now, what is the official name of the first iPhone that came out of apple in 2007? Was it just the iPhone? was is called the iPhone 2G? I've never heard it called the iPhone 2G until like a week ago and I've gotten half and half answers from a biased and non-biased question. Never mind that though, just answer the question. PLeAsE

Technically it should be called the iPhone 2.5G in this regard for those concerned since the EDGE network is a 2.5G network.

Buying First iPhone Tomorrow Curious if I should get 16gb or 32gb

Getting my first iPhone tomorrow and curious which would be the best choice.I've had a 30gb 5th Generation iPod for some time which is full... so should I go for the 32gb iPhone..?

I should have posted this question some time ago. I just got my 32G 3Gs this morning and I'm very happy with it.
I originally had reserved the 16 but when I actually got in line at the Apple store this morning I had second thoughts and forked over the extra $100 for the privilege to own the 32.
This is the way I see it. Ultimately, I opted for the 32G because I didn't want to regret. The reason I was originally thinking 16 was because unless like your situation where people actually have a gazillion tunes, an extra 16 might be an overkill. So, looks like in your case, logic dictates that you should opt for the 32 because you've stated that you've filled up 30G on the ipod and that's just in music.
Remember, the iphone 3Gs has video capability as well so you'll need space for that. I think the 32 was meant for people like yourself. You've actually managed to fill 30Gs. Unless you can tidy up and be efficient, meaning you offload pics/videos/movies etc. on a regular basis, you'll probably need the larger space. It's a crap shoot. But for you, unless you're going to trim your music collection, how are you going to get anything else on a 16? Bear in mind, also, if you want to have movies ripped on it, it's probably best to get the bigger drive. Hope this helps. $100 is a lot of money, but regretting if worse. Which way do you want to err?

does a person have to have an iTunes account before they can set up their first iPhone? I've had and apple ID for so long I don't remember the answer to this question. A friend asked me and I felt silly because I couldn't answer.

Like all devices, it has its little glitches from time to time, but overall its seems to work great...and I have the original iPhone...never had a real problem that couldnt be fixed by simply turning it off and on...
As for payment questions, you may want to contact Optus, Telstra or Vodafone...looks like they are the carriers in Australia.

Looking to purchase first iphone

my husband and i are looking to get our first iphones, so i have a few questions.
what size is good to get? I already have a 16gb touch. i think i might turn it back into the store for a discount on a ipod nano to keep all my songs on, then transfere all my apps to the new phone. good/bad idea? i only have about 20 apps on my touch. but over 1500 songs. i also have a few cartoon episodes of my son, to keep him occupid.
also, i bought my touch only a few months before the next gen came out. i felt screwed. i know there is a rumor the new iphone is coming out june 18th. i really like the chat option on it. we are miltiary and just moved to hawaii. it would be great to chat with family when ever and where ever we are due to the time difference. do they have to have a iphone to do chat or can it be any camera? also i "thought" i remember hearing that if you purchased your touch with in so many days of the new gen coming out you could return it for a new gen. could this be true for the new iphone?

Personally I would go with the 32GB model leaving you room for more apps, cartoons, childrens games, etc.
I sold my Touch after I bought my iPhone, you might want to consider doing the same and then buy whatever you want to replace it. Keep in mind Apple has released new iPods each September for the last 5 years and they release a new one each year. If you bought yours " a few months" before you really didn't get "screwed".
You have 14 days to return a product, less a 10% restocking fee. I would wait until Monday after the keynote speech at the WWDC to find out when the new iPhone will be available, unless you are concerned about getting an unlimited data plan, in which case you need to by before Monday.

HT201371 More Apple id's with the same Touch ID possible? I have two Apple ID's, one for buying apps since the first iPhone and later, one for iCloud. Now with my new iPhone 5s, after installation Touch ID is connected to the iCloud one.

I have 2 Apple ID"s, one for buying app's (since the first iPhone) in the store and another one for operating with iCloud things. Now, after installation/activation of my new iPhone 5s, the Touch ID is connected to the iCloud world. Conclusion, if I like to buy a new app. I still have to fill in the password for the other Apple ID. In the past I asked Apple to may join both, but that seems to be impossible.
Anyone a solution?

I am logged into the same things on both my iPhone and my MacBook Pro, except for mail. I use a gmail IMAP account and everything there already works on both machines. The iCloud account on my iPhone uses one Apple ID and the one on the Mac uses the second Apple ID.

I would also like this issue addressed.
I am using a Plantronics Voyager Pro+ and when it is connected to my iPhone 4, email and text sounds are not audible through the phone. The phone just vibrates when a new text or email is received.
I don't really care if it plays through the headset, but it should at least play through the phone. I tested the headset from a BlackBerry and the alerts play fine.
